Thanks for all the tips on where to find Emus for kids. I just wanted to let
you all know I found them quite by accident at Stride Rite in the Arsenal Mall.
They were a pretty good price from the research I did, and they had her size-
so I'm all set! Just wanted to pass along the info in case anyone else was
looking for these boots!
Thanks again!Jess

Thank you for this information, Sara. I hope a new bookstore can be on the
agenda for the December 17 meeting. If Belmont residents continue to reach out
to the New England Booksellers Association and the town is open to working with
the right vendor, we could have a wonderful new feature for our town.
Here is another example of how an independent bookstore can enrich the life of a
community, this one in Brooklyn, NY:
"I already got exactly what I wanted for Christmas--the Greenlight Bookstore,
which recently opened in my Brooklyn neighborhood of Fort Greene. Oh, the joy of
living in a place where an independent bookstore is opening, rather than being
closed down! The store is well appointed, smartly stocked, and welcoming. Their
events have been packed like Chelsea gallery openings--at the opening party,
which took place on a night of pouring rain, the sidewalk outside the store was
thronging with crowds who couldn't get in--and their children's corner is a
confirmed Saturday morning destination. With the Greenlight in the neighborhood
it's almost possible to believe this is an era in which publishing is
flourishing and reading has never been more popular."
I love, especially, the vision of a children's corner as a "confirmed Saturday
morning destination."
Thanks,
Gale Pryor

My 5 year old has asked for Emu boots from Santa. I guess the are similar to
uggs? Does anyone know of a good local store that carries this brand? She is
size 12.5.
Many thanks!

Another vote for Dr Pellegrini. I started taking my daughter there when she was
about 3. She was a nightmare -- wouldn't let him even look at her teeth, cried,
carried on, etc. He was so patient with her, just had her keep coming back to
"talk," and in no time she became a very cooperative patient. She has had some
fairly significant dental issues and yet she still loves going to see him. I
actually think she has a big crush on him (she is 8 years old now). :)

So my kids are tough when it comes to xrays and utensils in their mouth. We'd
been through several dentists and in an emergency two years ago I ended up with
my little one at Gentle Dental on Trapelo Road - because they were the
closest. To be honest, I never would have picked it otherwise. As it turns
out the treatment was amazing, reasonable, and we've been regulars ever
since. Their equipment is really nice and the staff is friendly and
professional. I'll never go anywhere else and when we walk by on our way to
CVS, the kids always want to run in to say hello to everyone. I've sent some
of my friend's and their children there and the results were just as
tremendous. That's my 2 cents and if you want references from some others,
email me privately.

We are very happy with Cambridge Pediatric Dental on Mass Ave. Everyone there
has been excellent. In particular, Sara Filstrup seems outstanding.

If in search of local service providers or if you want to post service needed
try new site, http://www.thumbtack.com might work for a starter. Although West
Coast centric, they already have national posts for local services wanted and
provided, and they verify service providers.

I've been educating myself a bit about environmentally preferable options for
ice melt, and from what I've read, calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) - as high a
percentage as possible - seems to be the best option, altho expensive. Does
anyone know of a local source for getting this, by any chance?
Thanks,
Alix
I believe the tax issue was with Toscanini's, which is owned by Joe's brother,
but which has nothing to do with Rancatore's (which Joe owns).

CORRECTION:Â That was Toscanini's in Cambridge, NOT Rancatores in Belmont.

You're confusing Rancatore's with Toscanini's. The owners are brothers, but
they're not the same business.
Toscanini's is owned by Gus Rancatore: his tax difficulties are described
here:
http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/02/03/where_the_ice_cream_is_good\
_its_fans_loyal/
Rancatore's is owned by Joe Rancatore - a man who makes excellent ice cream,
supports community causes, and has not, to my knowledge, ever been accused
of not paying his taxes.

This email is a shameless plug for a local
company, one that I have plugged before, as many of you might realize.)
Though I've never used Atlas Glen Mor, it sounds
to me like they were part of the "conglomeration"
of oil companies that was happening in the last few years.
Oil companies, to my mind, are one of the few
places where you can actually have a relationship
with the provider of your service. Unlike the
gas company (a utility) where you are dealing
with a nameless/faceless company, an oil company can be a person who you know.
We use Hi Energy, a Belmont Oil Company that is
family owned. When you call you talk to a family
member, when the oil is delivered it is delivered
by a family member and when service is provided
it is provided by a family member.
I like this alot.
Oh yeah, their prices are very competitive and
they have worked to make us understand the
decisions we have had to make when we have an
issue, or are trying to learn about the system so
that we can make better informed
decisions. (Terrible sentence, honorable thought though.)
So, if you are looking for a relationship with an
oil company, please give Hi Energy a try.
