The parking lot is very small. At the time I proposed the hike the list
had about 7 people on it so I had envisioned a one car operation. For
this hike, at least, I'd like to keep it down to two cars so that we don't
take over the lot and things in general stay manageable and personable.
We're at 7 now, so Erin, if you invite 1 or 2 of your friends we should be
okay (assuming 5 to a car and leaving an extra space in case another list
member or invitee joins us). As I wrote in my last e-mail, let us know
how many before Sunday.
By the way, setting up bigger hikes here is fine with me. In fact, I
would encourage anyone here to propose a future hike (big or small).
Looking forward to Sunday.

Page Mill Road is south of the bridge. After crossing the bridge just
stay on 92 until you hit 280. From there the exit's probably 20 minutes
away.

For us folks coming from the east side, where is Page Mill Road? South of the
San Mateo bridge or north? I’m just trying to figure out which bridge to use &
how long it’s going to take us to get there. Thanks!

Not that I don’t get up way earlier than that every other day, so I guess it’s

I say bring 'em. I balk at saying "the more the merrier", but only when "the
more" is greater than, say, 15.

Hi everybody,
My name's Rebecca, I'm 26, live in Oakland, and really enjoy day hikes, although
I get few opportunities to go. I'm pretty much a low-level hiker, 10 miles would
be my limit, as long as they weren't too strenuous. I'm willing to work my way
up, though! My biggest problem is transportation. Anybody driving from the East
Bay and willing to carpool? Let me know, and I'll join you all on Sunday.
I've just changed my email to an account that I can check daily, and I'm not
sure it went through. Just in case, my email is rlegates@...
Thanks!
Reb
OK, with all the people confirming that they'll be there this weekend, I'm
officially excited.
8:45 does seem early when you're traveling down here from the East Bay. I
think we peninsula folks are a tad spoiled to be so close to such wonderful
hiking territory, where 8:45 means realistically being out of bed by 8:15.
Gotta love the crack-a-dawn, though.
Can hardly wait to see y'all there!

Steve - I've seen the filters but I didn't know you could

Purisima Creek. Yes, that's the one - I had forgotten the
name. We
went last summer & you're right - it was beautiful. I found
the trail
from a coastal hiking book I have by the Sierra Club & I
thought it
would be a nice cooler day than inland - maybe some fog.
Well, it was
steaming & we went through about three miles of shade in the
late
morning. We hit the clearing at about 1 pm & it was about
85 and a
steady climb & I honestly thought my friend was going to
pass out. I
was looking for shade just in case for the last 100 feet of
ascent.
When we made it, though, it was a great view! You can bet
I'll be
hiking that one backwards next time, though.

Talking about being brief...!! : )
That was quiet an introduction, Erin. My name is Lydia and I've also just
joined the club, I'll be looking forward to going hiking this weekend.
Well, welcome and hope to meet you at our hike this Sunday.
Talk to ya soon...
Lydia.
I'm in Virginia right now but by the end of June I
will be living in the south bay area. I'm finishing
school majoring in Recreation and Parks.
I've been an avid backpacker and all around outdoors

The Shannandoah will be truly missed but I'm looking
forward to exploring the West coast, as soon as I get

Ha. No one was going to call you "Fairweather". My joke was only aimed
at those who were planning to go in the first place. It would be
pretty silly to expect every person on the list to go every time
someone proposed a hike. Have fun skiiing.

OK, here are the details for this Sunday:
Meet at the Page Mill/280 Park & Ride lot at 8:45. We'll then
carpool up
to Memorial Park's Heritage Grove parking lot. We'll be hiking
through
Memorial down to Pescadero Creek and back on about a 10 mile loop.
I've
hiked about 3/4 of these trails before so I probably won't get us
lost.
If anyone's feeling energetic afterward we could go bag Windy Hill
or
something. Bring food and water. We can stop and have lunch by the
creek.
We'll be going rain or shine. I think I've convinced Rebecca R. of
the
virtues of rainy day hiking and Lydia doesn't seem to mind it
either. If
you choose not to show because of weather, that's cool. We'll
nickname
you "Fairweather" and see you next time.
The Park & Ride lot is on Page Mill just west (toward the hills) of
280.
It'll be on your left as you exit the freeway. Look for some people
hanging around a green Camry.

Actually Jennifer, I *do* know what e-mail program you use - Hotmail. I
hadn't noticed your address. Anyway, they're called filters there and are
easy to use.
Back on the topic of hiking, you mentioned going to a redwood preserve
near Half Moon Bay. Were you talking about Purisima Creek perhaps? There
are some great views down to the western foothills and the ocean from
there.

Howdy Ho!
Just been asked to provide a brief introduction of myself to this
group after subscribing.
My first thought? Define "brief". :)
Okay, this is me:
My name is Erin Thomas, born in the Land of Fruits and Nuts and
raised mostly by the nuts, but currently working with the fruits.
Or, so it seems to me.
I believe my place on the fruits-and-nuts-o-meter is about:
Fruits Fruit Salad Nuts
-----------------------------------------(*)---------------
Just about to turn 28 years old in April. I'm into most things
to at least some degree, but my primary and utmost love in life is
inline skating. Simply, I love to skate.
Other loves are hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, writing and
drawing. I simply love coffee houses, the type where you can sit
and chat up a storm with people, or work on your art for hours at
a time. Been known to go to a coffee house at 10pm, and leave at
7am just in time for work when I'm really into a drawing project.
As for my "experience with hiking and backpacking"--
The last time I backpacked was when I was around 7 years old with
the school I was in in the San Louis Obispo area. Managed a few
ticks who's scars still exist to this day. I believe this was my
first real encounter with "nature".
As for hiking, I simply love good, long day hikes. The kind of
hike you get up early for and just barely manage to get back to your
car before dusk, and then go eat dinner someplace nice looking and
smelling all scuddy.
Places I've hiked at in the area are Rancho San Antonio, Nisene
Marks, Wilder Ranch (actually I've only mountain biked here), Great
Basin, The Pinicles (both east and west sides), and a few others
whos names escape me at the moment.
Let's add to my hiking experience some time I spent in the CCC
(California Conservation Corps) where I've actually been involved in
trail blazing and repair in some of the above named places. Often
there was quite a hike to the project site.
I'm waiting for the magna-lift adjustable magnetic traction skate
to come out so I can start skating these unpaved foot highways. :)
Only had a brief amount of time for this, but I certainly hope this
brief is acceptable as a brief introduction.
Cheerfulness,
-----EAT
I thought I'll introduce myself. My name is Lydia, 29 and I live in Fremont.
I've been in the bay area for 2 years now. I moved from Arizona where I used to
hiked the bottom of the Grand Canyon and mountains around Arizona. I'm an avid
hiker and love the outdoors. Since I've been here I've only hiked Mission Peak
in Fremont, and a couple of places in the Peninsula. I'm ready to start hiking
again though... I miss it!
So any hikes you're planning, count me in!
Talk to ya soon!
Hey Jennifer, if you're using digest mode to keep your e-mail manageable
you might want to consider doing what I do. Not sure what e-mail program
you use, but the terminology is pretty consistent. Create a new mailbox
called "Bay Area Hiking" or whatever. Then set a filter (sometimes called
a rule depending on the program) that automatically moves e-mail from this
list to that mailbox as it comes in. For example, I set a filter in
Eudora that looks for "[BayAreaHiking]" in the Subject field of incoming
messages. If it finds it, that message automatically goes to my Bay Area
Hiking mailbox.
This way I get messages as they're posted, but everything stays organized
and manageable with no effort from me. You may already know this, but
others on the list may not so I thought I'd post it for everyone.

Hotmail is beginning to frustrate me. I figure this list probably won't get
too out of hand and I want to get the e-mails pretty much as their sent, so
that weird "Holy Cow" guy, aka boddhidharma@...

Hi, my name is Rebecca and I'm a hiker.
:+)
I am co-moderator of the BayArea Hiking list. I currently live in San Mateo
and moved to the Bay Area from Maryland one year ago. I have only done
short day hikes but I immensely enjoy camping and hope that multi-day hikes
are in my future. Steve and I have done some hiking in the Southern Skyline
region but I look forward to exploring the whole Bay area. On average, a 10
to 15 mile hike is sufficient for me but I'm sure I could go farther.
I look forward to meeting everyone and doing some great hiking.
Hi, everyone. If you haven’t guessed, I think I’m the only one on the digest
version of this list, which is why I have been slower with my profile. I’m 23,
although my profile says otherwise – close enough. I live in Alameda, but I am
moving to Walnut Creek in 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I have one of those demanding
desk jobs, so I haven’t had the time to take up backpacking, although I think it
sounds fun. This summer, I’m going to try my hand at an outdoor course for
women sponsored by the Dept. of Fish & Game where I’m hopefully going to learn
orienteering.
Until April 15th I can only get out on Sundays (guess what I do for a living),
but after then I can hike any time on the weekends. I typically hike about 6 to
8 miles, but I also usually wear out whoever I’m with first so I don’t have a
problem with longer hikes. I’ve mostly hiked around Pt. Reyes, but I’ve also
been to Mount Diable (but not the peak!) and the redwood preserve over by
Halfmoon Bay. Last weekend, I went from the Cliff House and along the coast in
San Francisco, but that was more like a muddy walk than a hike. I’d like to go
to the top of Mt. Tam & Mt. Diablo this summer and I wouldn’t mind getting down
to the Santa Cruz mountains. I think that’s it.
Jennifer
Hi all,
I'm Eric,a 24 year living in Los Gatos. I moved here about a year ago from
Idaho. I'm up for any kind of trip and traveling generally isn't a problem.
Generally trips I've taken in the past are around 3 days. However I'm game for
anything from a short day hike to a week. Past trips include Glacier National
Park, Mallard Larkins Wilderness, Selway River, etc. I've also done a lot of
winter camping (go figure in Idaho) anything from hiking, shoeing to backcountry
skiing. I've recently purchased some guide books but have yet to rifle through
it all. I'll keep you posted if I find anything outstanding. Hope to see you
on the trails soon.
