PLEASE READ THIS EMAIL IN FULL. IT IS MOST IMPORTANT!

Thanks for your Owner's Review. It has been added to the Owner Review Queue and
will be picked up by an Edit Moderator soon. If you are new to
BackpackGearTest.org, welcome to the community! The Editors will work with you,
within their own time constraints, to get your first two Owner Reviews approved
and upload in a timely manner. Do not worry if nothing happens with it for
several days. All our Editors are volunteers and your report will be subject to
an official edit within fourteen days. If you have not had a response from an
Edit Moderator via the Yahoo Groups list within this timeframe, please let me
know directly at jdeben(at)hotmail.com

To assist in this process, if this is your first Owner Review we ask that you
post only ONE Owner Review for edit at a time. Our experience is that it is more
efficient for both the Editors and
yourself, if you post your first review, have it edited, approved and uploaded
before you post your second and subsequent reviews.

Once your first two Owner Reviews have been approved and you have submitted your
Tester Agreement you will be eligible to start applying for Tests. If you'd like
more assistance or guidance with the process you can request a mentor by sending
an email to Jenn K., the mentor coordinator, at mentor (at)
backpackgeartest.org.

You may receive edits or comments from other members of the group. These edits
and comments, while not official, should be considered carefully, and if you
find them substantial, revise and re-post your review. Incorporating member
edits and re-submitting to the list
will usually result in a better review, as well as making things easier for the
official Editor. Please put REVISED in the subject line of your re-submitted
review if you take this route or make any
changes to your review BEFORE the review has been taken by an Edit Moderator.

Additionally, it is important for you to monitor the Yahoo Groups list to keep
track of the progress of your Owner Review. Once an Editor has taken your OR and
made the necessary edits they will post their comments to the list with EDIT in
the subject line. Once you have incorporated these edits into your review please
use REPOST in the subject line. When your OR has been approved by the Editor
they will use APPROVED in the subject line.

If you'd like to keep track of the progress of your OR while it's in the edit
queue, the entire Owner Review Queue is posted to this yahoo group list on
either Thursdays or Fridays.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask via the list or
contact me directly.

Hello new folks,

We are super glad you are here and hope you will be joining the ranks of our
established gear testers very soon. Below you will find some must do's if you
want your Owner Review (OR) added to our Edit Queue. These points will make
your life and the lives of those involved with the OR process easier. I
appreciate you taking the time to review and apply this info.

1. Please READ the How to Become a Tester information on the
www.backpackgeartest.org website more than once. I know at first glance the
documentation seems like a major uphill climb but as with all summits, the work
you put in ahead of time will definitely be rewarded when you get to the top.

2. We strongly encourage new writers to write about, A. something simple and B.
something with which you have lots of trail time. By lots we mean a season or
more involving several days/nights. Use around town, in your backyard, etc.
does not count as field time.

3. ORs will NOT be accepted into the Owner Review Edit Queue if they do not
clearly state the number of days/nights you have used the item. Given the nature
of an owner review and the possible amount of years you could have owned the
item we understand it may not be possible for you to recall the exact number of
uses so an estimate is fine.

4. ORs will also not be accepted if you do not include your real full name and
email address in the Tester Bio Section.

5. Please make sure you spell check and proofread your work before posting and
reposting. You will avoid a ton of silly errors if this is diligently done.

6. When you are ready to post your OR to the Yahoo group for editing please
create an HTML version and post it in the TEST Folder on the
www.backpackgeartest.org website. Include a link to the HTML version at the top
of your Owner Review so your editor knows where to look for it. You will not be
able to proceed through the edit process until the HTML version has been
uploaded to the Test Folder. If you need assistance with converting your report
to HTML please see our Report Writer on the BGT site.

7. When posting an OR for the first time please use this format in the subject
line…
Owner Review: Company & Product – Your Name
Here's a current example from one of our veteran testers …
OR - Injinji Tetratsok Liner - Kathy Waters

8. When REPOSTING, meaning after your OR has been taken and edited by an editor
AND you have made all the requested corrections, please use this format in the
subject line…
REPOST: OR - Company & Product – Your Name
Ex: REPOST: OR - Sea to Summit Silk Liner - Shawn Wakefield

9. If you will be off hiking, visiting your grandchildren, having a baby,
heading an expedition to each of the 7 summits or otherwise away from email
access for more than a day or two it is very much appreciated if you post a note
to the yahoo group to let us know what is going on. On BGT we call this an Out
of Pocket notice or OOP. This quick note let's us know you are still around and
interested in BGT but you are away from email contact for a predetermined length
of time. Please include your name, the date you are leaving and returning, and
what ORs are affected by your absence.

Again, welcome to BGT and I hope you find this message informative. Please
direct any questions to the yahoo group.

Cordially,
Mrs. Jamie DeBenedetto

FIELD INFORMATION

Areas including New Mexico, Kansas, South Dakota and of course Colorado were
covered, all with various terrains including city streets and parks, grasslands,
canyons, foothills, mountain passes, sub alpine forrest and prairie. The Garmin
Etrex H was used in hand while hiking on and off trail, while traveling winding
paths atop a mountain bike as well as in the hands of a passenger navigator in a
vehicle while trying to find particular coordinates for otherwise unmarked roads
or other points of interest.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

Being put to use in the hot, dry canyons of southeast Colorado the Garmin Etrex
H withstood temperatures in excess of 118 F (48 C) for prolonged periods of
time. Several severe thunderstorms, including one which produced a tornado 15
miles (24 km) southeast of my position at that time, gave the Etrex H a proper
soaking as well as a good beating with high winds and a little hail. During the
winter it was used to find my way back to my car after 8 inches of snowfall
concealed my path while the temperature dropped to -3 F (-19 C).

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Garmin Etrex H is a handheld GPS system that is made for the trail. The
manufacturer website says that it is, "perfect for outdoor enthusiasts on a
budget" costing $99.99 MSRP and it is said to be a "high-sensitivity GPS
receiver that locks onto satellite signals quickly and maintains accuracy".

CONTROLS

There are 5 buttons on this unit and they are as follows:
On the left side of the unit there are 3 buttons listed top to bottom.
<b>Page Up</b> - Select options on pages and menus, adjusts display contrast on
satellite page, zooms in and out on the map page and cycles through trip data on
the navigation page.
<b>Page Down</b> - Does the same as the page up button.
<b>Enter</b> - Confims data entry or meny selection, displays options on the
main page and pressing and holding the ENTER button will activate the Mark
Waypoint page.
On the right hand side of the unit there are 2 buttons listed top to bottom.
<b>Page</b> - Switches between pages and moves out of pages.
<b>Power</b> - Turns the GPS unit on and off and it also turns the displays
backlight on and off.

PAGES

<b>Satellite Page:</b><<IMAGE GOES HERE. ALT TEXT = "Satellite Page">>
This page shows the unit gathering the necessary satellite information it needs
in order for the unit to function correctly. There are 2 specific views to the
page which are the normal skyview that shows the satellites, their signal
strength as well as the estimated location accuracy. Then there is the advanced
skyview which displays the numbered satellites that the unit is using as well as
their proximity to the current position and their individual signal strength.

<b>Map Page:</b><<IMAGE GOES HERE. ALT TEXT = "Map Page">>
The map page will display the location of the device as an animated figure like
a stick man and if the device is moving it will provide a picture of which
direction in which it is going as the stick man walks or jogs. The stick man
will leave a "trail" otherwise known as a track log. Waypoints and symbols are
also shown on the map.

<b>Navigation Page:</b><<IMAGE GOES HERE. ALT TEXT = "Compass">>
Shows the direction in which the device is moving and at what speed. If the
device is moving towards a specific waypoint it will reflect that here by
marking it on the compass face.
By pressing the UP or DOWN buttons the unit will cycle through other trip
infomation such as a maximum speed, an average speed, moving direction, bearing,
position coordinates, elevation, time of the sunrise or sunset, a trip timer and
a trip odometer.

<b>Main Menu:</b><<IMAGE GOES HERE. ALT TEXT = "Menu">>
This is where the more advanced features such as creating waypoints, creating
routes, viewing track logs or accessing the system setup features can be
found.<<IMAGE GOES HERE. ALT TEXT = "As Seen In Manual">>

FIELD PERFORMANCE

<b>Sensitivity</b>
The H connotes that the Etrex H has the Garmin high-sensitivity receiver in the
unit. I have never experienced the loss of signal or been dropped by a satellite
even in the densely wooded areas throughout Colorado's Rocky Mountains, not even
winding up Pikes Peak in a vehicle have I lost signal or been dropped. However,
acquiring signal inside buildings did prove to take longer if an adequate
connection could be made at all without first having to move outdoors to make
the connection first before reentering the building, in which case a signal
could then be maintained while moving through the buildings area and floors.

<b>Screen Legibility</b>
The simple LCD display screen proves to be easy enough to read with a little
adjustment to its color and contrast because factory settings are a little dim.
With the backlight on it lights up orange and is easy to read both in pitch
black darkness and during the twilight hours.

<b>Battery Life</b><<IMAGE GOES HERE. ALT TEXT = "Battery Casing">>
Using regular Energizer Industrial batteries the life of the unit lasts
significantly less than when Energizer Lithium batteries are in use. I have not
done an in depth study of the approximate number of hours of use each set were
able to sustain battery life for but overall I count 9-13 uses on Energizer
Industrial and 17-19 uses with lithium batteries, each use no less than 1 hour
and no more than 6 hours.

<b>Startup Time</b>
7.98 s to "Acquiring Satellites"
17.17 s to satellite acquisition

<b>Tracking</b>
The Etrex H leaves "breadcrumbs" that log the trip and this can be used to
backtrack back to the start point using the exact same path taken to the spot
where there had to be a turnaround. It proves to be quite an accurate and useful
tool in case something was dropped along the way and it was necessary to go back
for whatever was lost or dropped, or in case a wrong turn was taken back along
the way.

<b>Routing</b>
Marking waypoints along the trail is easy enough and you can log them as
numbered points or customize the waypoints name. Using the "Go To" feature of
the Etrex H to find previously marked waypoints is quite handy and easy enough
to manage since the menu is laid out simply enough.

Entering in a route is also simple enough to accomplish and follow.

SUMMARY

Overall the Garmin Etrex H has proven to be simple enough to use and understand
for a first time handheld GPS unit user such as myself and it has stood up to
the test of durability since it has been dropped numerous times and the only
thing that broke on the unit was the small peg for the lanyard attachment, but
other than that it has come out of some pretty tough tumbles without as much as
a scratch. I found it a good choice for myself for both its low cost and ease of
use.

THINGS I LIKED

1. Low-cost
2. Waterproof
3. Receiver sensitivity
4. Fair memory capability
5. Moderate weight
6. Ease of use
7. Durability
8. Bright backlight
9. Easy to read LCD screen

THINGS I DON'T LIKE

1. Low battery life in comparison to other units on the market.
2. There is no slot for extra memory from a MicroSD card.

Hello Csilla,

Thank you for your Owner Review (I have the same model by the way), your edits
will follow. They will take the following format;

EDIT: must be changed
Edit: should be changed but will be left to your discretion
Comment: just that or something to think about

When you have made the changes please repost here with REPOST added to the
subject line.

I see you are already using the Report Writer. You can also put a HTML copy in
the Owner Review Test Folder. It is found at the end of the list of reviews on
the main page or here;

Please let me have a link to the review or at least the name once you have it
uploaded.

***FIELD USE

EDIT: since you do not take this hiking maybe change this from Field Use to Home
Use, or Observations or something like that.

You may want to add a paragraph telling how the food you have dehydrated turned
out. Does it meet your expectations? Does it justify the initial expense in your
opinion? Are you happy with it?

***Wish it would come with more solid sheets

Comment: you know they sell additional sheets and trays right? I have 12 trays
and three of the solid sheets for mine. (But I actually find myself only using
about three most the time ;-)

Hi Kathy,

Sorry your review waited so long. I was buried last week. Here are your edits.
Once made you may upload to:

Reviews > Snow Gear > Traction Aids > Kahtoola Micro Spikes

Hope you are feeling better,

Ray

***Listed Weight: 11 oz (312 g)

EDIT: I see that they list the smalls as 11.4 oz

*** Five sets of two (on small) 3/8 inch ( cm) hardened stainless steel spikes

EDIT: missing the metric conversion

EDIT: um, you never mention what the microspikes are made to be used for in your
product description.

Comment: you jump back and forth on the spelling of MICROspikes vs microspikes.
One paragraph has three one way, the next has three the other way. Maybe may
them all the same?

Backpacking Background:

I have been an outdoorsmen all of my life hunting, hiking, and
camping, however this is my first year backpacking. I backpack localy on weekend
trips,I strive to have fun when I am outdoors so I try to pack light, but stay
comfortable. I am planning a 60 mile solo trip, but I enjoy backpacking the most
when I am with my girlfreind Christa and our great dane Marley.

Model: Last Chance, Light Duty Belt-38mm

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

The Last Chance belt design was inspired from the belts used by
Wildland Firefighters and Smokejumpers. The single layer Nylon webbing is
flexible and comfortable for extended wear periods, and is available in many
colors and patterns. The V-ring buckle is made of high strength aircraft
aluminum and comes in either a black oxide or gunmetal finish.

Field Information:

I have tested the belt in a variety of locations, and weather conditions over
two years. I have wore the belt with shorts in high heat and humidity, and have
also wore the belt in freezing cold conditions.

Product Review:

I purchased the belt in April of 2009, initially for hiking and
backpacking, one of the first things I noticed about the belt was that it was
lightweight and the Nylon webbing is very flexible. The stitching on the belt
looked very tight and heavy duty, there is also a tag on the belt that says it
is made in the USA which influenced my purchase.

I first tested the belt on a survival camping trip in Brush Creek
State Park, near Salineville, Ohio. Initially I noticed how quick and simple the
V-ring buckle was to fasten, and after a few hours in the woods the buckle kept
the belt tight without a constant need for readjusting unlike an Army style
belt. When I removed the Last Chance at the end of the day I noticed that my
waist line was cool and dry, not the hot and clammy feel you get from wearing a
leather belt.

The belt soon became used for every day use, as an arborist I am very
rough on clothing and have never had one problem with the belt. The slim design
of the V-ring buckle keeps it tight to my body and the belt is hardly ever
noticed when wearing my backpack or climbing saddle. I often wear a Gerber
multi-tool on the belt, and have noticed that the belt loosens and needs to be
readjusted from the added weight. However Bison Designs also offers the Last
Chance Heavy Duty belt that has a Velcro closure, which would be more adequate
for carrying a heavy multi-tool.

After two years the stitching has never worked loose, nor does the
webbing have any frays, the gunmetal buckle has a few scratches but still works
perfectly. When I talked to Bison Designs, they informed me that all of the
products they sell are under waranty and they will replace any item that is
damaged. This belt is very durable and I have used this belt from everything from
an emergency dog leash to an anchor system around a tree.

  Likes:

Durability-This belt is super tough, it takes other high priced belts to the
woodshed!

Quickness-I love how quick the belt can be fastened, readjusted, and removed.

Made in the USA

Dislikes:

The belt doesn't wear well with a multi-tool.

I always have the urge to test the V-ring buckle on a repel, this belt is Not
intended for Climbing.

Ray,

Thanks for the edits! Added a descriptive sentence in the product description
section, fixed the conversions and tried to make the MICROspikes vs spikes
confusion less confusing! <g>

I appreciate knowing you keep me on my toes. Hoping to keep you busier next
month when I get back to CO from my family visits.

Also thanks for the best wishes - definitely feeling better now, but for a few
days last week I wasn't betting on it. The only thing that got me off the
bathroom floor was my sister pushing me out of the way! Two people with food
poisoning and one bathroom is not pretty!

OK Csilla,

This looks pretty good. Just a couple edits. One thing that needs to be
addressed is your title. The "R" is missing from the end of "Dehydrator".

***For someone in a small apartment like me, it has a very large presence when
I'm running it.

EDIT: to keep this sentence from being projection (for someone other than you)
maybe reword this to "As I live in a small apartment it has a very large
presence when I'm running it."

Once you fix it you can place the review at:

Reviews > Food Preparation Gear > Nesco Gardenmaster Pro Dehydrator

Or here: http://tinyurl.com/4udvbor

As this is your second approved review, if you have submitted a Tester
Agreement, for which see:

http://tinyurl.com/dndp

that has been acknowledged, you are now eligible to participate in the testing
process by applying for tests. If you have not sent your paperwork in, please do
so at your earliest opportunity.

You will also need to join:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/backpackgeartesters/

This is where everything related to Tests and Testing takes place.

However, please don't stop writing Owner Reviews. The more Owner Reviews you
write, the better you will get at report writing and this won't go unnoticed
when Test Moderators are choosing testers.

Congratulations!

Ray

Colt,

I haven't seen anything come through, but I haven't checked the Yahoo website (I
try to subscribe via email, but sometimes that breaks down). Have you checked
the site to see if your messages were posted? I don't know if a moderator has to
approve your membership or not (it's been a while since I registered). Send a
test message to the list and I'll see if I get it:

You've got a nice start to your first report. You need more information

EDIT: while this is a good start, you really need some additional
information about your backpacking background. Are you a lightweight packer,
or heavy hauler. What type of shelter do you use most, tarp, tent, or
shelter? What kind of terrain are you used to hiking? In short... talk about
how you hike and where you hike as the reader can then relate that
information to how they hike. Remember the 100 word limit though.

> Manufacturer: Gerber
> Year of Manufacture: Unknown (didn't look before discarding box).
EDIT: If you purchased in December 2010, then put '2010' here

> Purchased December 2010 Manufacturer's Website:
EDIT: Remove ' Purchased December 2010' as it will be referenced above.

> -Knife sheaths inside the axe.
> -Comes with small nylon carrying case with belt lope.
EDIT: More details are needed about the item. Think of the "Product
Information' section as where you talk about what you "see". Discuss the
construction of the item, the materials, the sharpness, the quality. Also
talk about the function, features, and so forth. The 'Field Use' section is
where you talk about how you "feel" about an item.

> FIELD USE
EDIT: Need more information. Try looking at this report and thinking about
what questions you could answer about your items. http://is.gd/mjpusP

> Total estimated times combo was used in controlled environment: 30
> Total estimated times combo was used in field: 100 (easily)
Edit: It would be much easier for the reader to understand what you're
talking about if you said something to the effect of " In all, I've used the
knife a total of roughly 30 times around home, and 100 times while out
hiking".

>
> Light, easy to work with, and fully functional. Great little set.
Edit: You've got fragment sentences like this throughout your report. Try
writing in complete sentences. This not only makes it easier for the reader
to read, but also has the added effect of naturally lengthening your report.

>
> Knife sheath inside axe. Brilliant.

TESTER INFORMATION

Name: Colt Pini
Age: 27
Gender: male
Height: 6'3" (191 cm)
weight: 265 lbs. (120 Kilograms)
Email address: coltpini@...
City, State, Country: Flagstaff, Arizona, USA
Date: March 12, 2011

Backpacking Background: I haven't been backpacking enough to have a "style"
though I am usually the mule in carrying the heavy gear. I have been in the
outdoors most of my life and have camped in southern Utah and Arizona. I love
fishing and try to stop by as many lakes as I can along the trail.

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Manufacturer: Carhartt
Year of Manufacture: Current
Manufacturer's Website: www.carhartt.com
MSRP: $16.00

Specs:

Visual Description: Brown beanie with ear flaps and a facial cover that tucks in
the beanie when not used.
Listed Size: One Size Fits all.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

"Our 2-in-1 fleece headwear combines a fleece hat with a pull-down face mask
that tucks up into the hat when not in use. The hat is 100% polyester fleece and
the face mask is a 90% polyester/10% spandex blend. For added comfort, the inner
mask features a moisture-wicking, anti-microbial finish. The Carhartt logo is
sewn on the front."
The hat comes in three colors: black, grey, and dark brown.

FIELD USE CONDITIONS AND RESULTS:

I haven't had this beanie for very long. I have used it two major outing and
many trips to work in sub freezing temperatures. One outing was skiing at the
local ski resort. This served as a great test for both the warmth of the beanie
and attached face mask. The day was fairly warm at about 40(f) but there was a
cold biting wind that made it feel much colder. The second was a recent campout
along beaver creek. The night temp was around 30(f).

In the three different situations the beanie preformed well. The warmth was
comfortable for all three situations and the ear flaps kept my ears from turning
red. While skiing was the only time that I used the face mask and it kept my
mouth and nose very warm. I wear glasses and the face mask comes so high on the
face that my glasses didn't fit right and my breath would fog up my glasses so
after a short time of warming up my nose I pulled the face mask down under my
nose to accomidate my glasses. While camping in beaver creek the sleeping was
very comfortable though in the morning it warmed up quickly and the beanie was
too hot at around 40(f).

I am very surprised at how well the beanie fits. I have a pretty large head and
most "one size fits all" don't fit me. When I first got the beanie it looked
rather small and I thought it would be a good one for my wife but upon trying it
on it fit very well.

SUMMARY:

After having used several different beanies this one is now my everyday, well
every cold day anyway. It fits well and keeps my head and face nice and warm. It
wisks away moisture from outside and in. The only draw back is the fogging up of
my glasses.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

(product image)

- Patented tuning fork design reduces harmful vibration that can cause wrist and
arm injuries.
- Forged, one-piece steel construction for increased strength and durability
- Rim temper reduces incidences of chipping or spalling
- Ergonomically designed handle with rubber grip for increased comfort and
performance

FIELD USE CONDITIONS AND RESULTS:

I have used this hammer / hatchet on every campout for the last three years and
for several projects around the house. This is one of the most useful tools I
have as it pulls, prys, nails, pounds, chops, sparks, splits, hangs, supports
and just about anything else. I have used it to fell small trees and strip and
cut logs (upto about 6 inch diam.).

The blade stays sharp under great abuse. The metal is a high quality and shows
little more than minor scrapes. There has been no denting or bending of any
kind. The handle is a rubber grip keeps it from sliding or slipping under use.

The head is well balanced. The whole seems a little heavy in the handle but not
so much that I notice during use. Only when handling or throwing. The AntiVibe
system work well and I don't feel the normal vibration fatigue under extended
use. The rubber grip is a little too grippy in that blisters may be quick to
form. I have learned to pack a pair of nice work gloves.

On the blade side of the head there is a small notch that is perfect for hanging
the hammer / hatchet on a tree or from a strap or (in my case) an axe holder
from your backpack.

The blade length is only 1.75 in (44.45mm) and makes for a few extra chops on
wider trees.

SUMMARY:

I have found this an essential tool. It is very sturdy and strong and will last
a long time. It keeps a blade very well and haven't had to sharpen it but twice.
I would recomend this to anyone wanting to find a good camp tool.

I just checked through the group forum and they aren't there. I guess I either
need to repost or they are in a log to be approved. I don't know which. I did
post two OR but I found that I only want one at a time. So if I need to repost
please let me know.

Thanks, Colt

Hi Colt...

As a new member you automatically start out being moderated. This is to
make sure we're not letting spammers join the group.

There are several list administrators, and usually one of them reads your
message, and if legitimate, sends it through and removes your moderation
status. Usually this happens quickly and you might not even be aware of
the fact that it is happening.

I normally do not do this task as the other Mods seem to be quicker than I
am. In this case, you seem to have falling into the cracks. This is
nothing against you personally, just the way the system works.

I have approved your messages so they should all three come through about
the same time. I have also removed the moderation status on your
membership so future messages should sail on through... well, at least as
smoothly as Yahoo! permits.

I apologize for the confusion, and delay, and would like to welcome you to
BGT!

I'm set to individual messages, and I see everyone else's posts, just
not mine.

Don't know if it's googlemail or yahoogroups that's responsible, but
it's been that way for a while.

I am an active Eagle Scout and Venture Scout in my area. I have been hiking for
seven years and have consistently enjoyed it. I usually hike with a 18 kg (40

Initial Impressions

I bought the Quad Comfort boots at Sportman's Warehouse when it were closing
down. They look good and rugged. I tried the boots on and they fit well. The fit
is snugger than what I am used to but is comfortable. The speed lacing system is
standard albeit secure and strong. The stiffness is reminiscent of forced entry
combat boots. They restrict lateral ankle movement which is their job. This
provides the ankle with good support on all dimensions. These will be good for
hiking and everyday use.

Field Description

I bought these to replace a old pair of cheap boots that went FUBAR. I am going
to NW District Chickasaw Camporee, a scout campout and competition. It will be a
good test of short hiking and durability. It rained two days before the event
starts so it will be slightly muddy. It will be in the highs of 70 and lows of
50. The terrain is developed by in the woods is very hilly and mostly deciduous
trees. It is also located in the delta so the soil is loamy and slick. The roads
are made of compacted gravel. I've used these on at least four campouts and
dozens of Scout meetings. This concludes my Field Report. The Long-Term Report
should be completed by 3/17/2011. Please check back then for further
information.

Summary

The speed lacing was very convient and easy. The boots are really comfortable,
especially compared to the ones I used to wear. I haven't gotten any blisters
and I've been running around in them all day wet. The boots don't have great
traction, but they don't slip on slick liquids (water and oil). The treads are
easy to clean. The factory waterproofing worked well but I always suggest to
seal it again yourself. The only damage is cosmetics. The leather has darkened
to a rich mahogany. The nylon inners have not developed odor which pretty
surprising to me. I washed the soles by dangling my feet off a dock and using a
stick to push out rocks. To clean the leather, I took a bandanna and washed the
mud and dust off.

THINGS I LIKE

The grip on slippery surfaces is really good.
The support of the uppers is exceptional.
The tab is a better way for me to pull on the boots.

Things You Don't Like

The lugs are too small. They don't grip the soil as well as a slightly larger
lug.
There needs to be a way to loosen the entrance instead of being like a
forced-entry.

Long Term Experience

I wore these boots on a family hike in Shiloh National Military Park. We planned
to hike 45 miles. The temperature was in the 80's and no rain forecast. On the
first day, I wore midweight hiking socks and did not get any blisters. The boots
are holding up well. I've put at least 50 miles on them, excluding this trip. By
now the leather sections are now a rich chocolate hue mottled with mahogany. The
second day, I wore a different pair of socks and still no blisters. The hikes
have been averaging 15 miles per day. Third day, I was forced to hike with cheap
cotton socks and got a small blister. I am pretty sure that the boot was not at
fault but the sock. We finished up the hikes and the blister did not worsen
after proper care and clothing. The boots have been through a lot. They hold up
well and did not have any problems except for leather darkening. The only thing
I had to get used to was the limited range of motion and less traction.

#### FIELD INFORMATION
#### EDIT: Please include in this section some statement of how many
times you might have used it hiking and backpacking. This could be as
simple as saying "I've used this GPS receiver on more than a dozen
trips" or "every other month for the past two years" or similar. If
you have detailed records of when and where you used it, those are
even better (you might actually have this if you saved the route
tracks).

#### WEATHER CONDITIONS
#### Comment: reading your weather descriptions, the reader is left
wondering how well the unit worked in extreme heat as well as in quite
cold conditions. I know that my Garmin is slow to boot and slow to
refresh the display in extreme cold. You might consider adding some
experiences here about how well it worked (or didn't) in these
extremes. I'd also be curious to know if you noticed any battery life
differences at either end of the temperature range. Maybe these
comments belong here, or they could also go in the field performance
section.

#### Battery Life
#### Comment: You might also indicate the manufacturer's claimed
battery life in this section.

#### Startup Time
7.98 s to "Acquiring Satellites"
17.17 s to satellite acquisition
#### Edit: These are pretty precise numbers. Are these your
measurements, or where did they come from? If they're from Garmin
please say so. If they're your measurements it's probably OK to round
them to 8 and 17 seconds, respectively. Is the satellite acquisition
number dependent on the signal strength, location, clear view of the
sky, etc?

#### this can be used to backtrack back to the start point
#### EDIT: this can be used to backtrack to the start point

#### Entering in a route is also simple enough to accomplish and follow.
#### Comment: You might describe the steps at a high level so the
reader gets a feel for what is involved.

#### I found it a good choice for myself for both
#### EDIT: good choice for me for both

#### Comment: Some additional things would be useful to the reader, I
think. For example, you don't mention if any base map comes included
with the unit - in other words is there a map on there or is it just
blank, with lat/lon? Can a map be added? Does it come with any PC
software? If so what can you do with that, and how does it interface
with the unit? Ultimately it's your choice if you want to add these
items or not.

Regards
Jamie DeBenedetto
Edit Administration Manager
