Been running BPQ for 20 years Karl. I understand the compile thing.
I will send it though. Maybe I'm missing something.

It come up and compiles with two ports. Shows two ports. I can
connect to it thru the bbs or BPQ terminal. Pick either port 1 or
2, it doesn't matter. It still uses the same port on the TNC.

Thanks for the help.

Dave,

I have been watching your messages about using two ports with BPQ. I
run an old KAM with BPQ and both ports work just as they are suppose
to. If you would send your bpqcfg.txt file to kb8dm@kb8dm.com I will
take a look at it and compare it to my configuration file.

Again as always your must complile the txt file into bin.

I may be wrong, but I think that the 1278 is a single port TNC with the the ability to select an HF or VHF modem (like the TNC220), not a dual port TNC with separate HF and VHF channels, like the KAM.

Dave,

I have been watching your messages about using two ports with BPQ. I

take a look at it and compare it to my configuration file.

Again as always your must complile the txt file into bin.

That would explain it John. Thanks. I guess I need to fire up the PK900.

I may be wrong, but I think that the 1278 is a single port TNC with the the ability to select an HF or VHF modem (like the TNC220), not a dual port TNC with separate HF and VHF channels, like the KAM.

Karl. Thanks for the offer! It was the 1278. PK900 with two "separate"
modems, did the trick.

Thanks to ALL for the help the last two days. After 20 years of
DOS FBB-BPQ and 16 bit FBB-BPQ, I'm finally in the 21st century.

I'm sure going to miss those DRSI cards and external HF modems
though.

Yes. Two BPQ/BPQ32 sessions may be connected via serial ports using a
null modem cable. The ports can be defined as KISS or as NETROM. Of
course both sides must be defined with the same protocol and baud rate.

I should probably describe the pin outs for the cable in the next
install document.

Good evening group

K.O N0KFQ and my self ran some extensive testing in the last couple
of day's, K.O running WFBB 7.00I and myself 7.00E 32bit, the
following between both of us is what we are having problems with:

After much experimenting last night, changing the Global and Port
Pacl to 80 still resulted:

In a transmitted Pacl of 238, I took the TNC out of Kiss, set Pacl
to 80 still with Global and Port at 80 and Tnc went back to 238.

Also I have a station that uses my Telpac for large files transfers,
of course the Pacl set in Telpac Of 128 and the transmitting end at
128, I first was concerned with the no delay time between
transmissions.

I played with the response, slot time, persist and Frack timing and
found no changes to better the frequency Occupation.

Also being concerned with the long transmissions I had to reduced
the Maxframe from 5 to 2 this did reduce the length Of the
transmissions considerably and prevented retries, but I was not able
to change the response time, Persistence and Slot Timing for better
frequency occupation.

At one point I was forwarding to the Telpac station Via RF and AXIP
forwarding at the same time, but the RF Forwarding gained precedence
over AXIP forwarding and AXIP forwarding Timed out.

Running ether WFBB 7.00E or I and the latest three DLL'S that John
has provided to allow monitoring Inbound and outbound running under
Windows XP or W2K only 1 BPQ port can be allocated in FBB.

Trying multiple Ports in the port.sys BPQ uses the first Port and
the rest are ignored.

There seems to be only three ways to limit the Transmission length:

1: Pacl setting in FBB but the limit is one setting only

2: Add an IF Statement in forwarding partners forwarding Block to
change the PACL.

3: Reduce the Maxframe in BPQ per Port.

These are only observations John Has done a fantastic job meeting
our needs with BPQ32U and all the DLL'S needed for all the various
programs, Ron has done a great job with explanations of BPQ.

There is still one part of BPQ I haven't been able to make work,
VCOM Config and BPQTNC2.exe.

I would like to point out that WnFbb 7.01-35 has been causing a wide
spead problem that can not be solved, after running 7.01-35 for a
couple of years, I unfortuatlly i was forced to retire 7.01-35 to
the hall of fame.

Ron and I had discussed this many times if only we had one good BBS
program, how ever after some work and file changing i was able to
get the 7.00 series WFBB working correctly with W2K and XP.

If anyone needing the edited files and System Environment Variable
Path String to make the HouseKeeping work correctly please let me
know.

Thanks John and Ron for the use of the BPQ Reflector for FBB
discussion.

I just tested connecting two windows computers together with a serial cable using BPQ32 successfully.  I configured each side as KISS and of course at the same baud rate.  I am using a cable I built long ago...Ill have to take it apart to get the pin outs.  It did not work when each side was configured as PROTOCOL=NETROM however.  My recollection is that when I did have that working long ago it required a special cable..right now I don't know how that cable differed.

I think a standard null modem cable, using PROTOCOL=KISS will work, but as I said Ill open up the one I built and see if it is 'nonstandard'.

Perhaps this afternoon.....

Both KISS and Netrom used to work, but haven't done it in a while.
Pinout is different for each. 2-3 3-2, and the other i2 2-2, 3-3, and
a gnd if you're fussy!

They have changed some things recently and the setup file(s) that are
found here no longer quite work.

The local.pm file that we were using is now the same as Spider ships
with the update(s). eg. found in spider/perl. So in local you don't
need any of the bpq32 stuff, they now have it in spider/perl and it
apparently works fine.

You will discover this as if you use the related files found in
bpq32, spiderbpq.zip and follow the instuctions it fires up two
instances of bpqlistners. You then will hang when coming from node
to DX or the node name.

Took me quite a while to figure this out as I don't do much with this
box it just runs.

I have connected two BPQ32 Windows machines together using a 'null modem' cable and the following port configuration:

PORT
 PORTNUM=1        ; Optional but sets port number if stated
 ID=BPQ CABLE    ; Displayed by PORTS command
 TYPE=ASYNC        ; Port is RS232 Com
 PROTOCOL=KISS        ; TNC is used in KISS mode
 FULLDUP=0        ; Only meaningful for KISS devices
 IOADDR=1        ; 1 = SERIAL PORT COM1 ETC.
 SPEED=9600        ; RS232 COM PORT SPEED
 CHANNEL=A        ; A for single channel TNC, A or B for multichannel
 PERSIST=64        ; PERSIST=256/(# of transmitters-1)
 SLOTTIME=100        ; CMSA interval timer in milliseconds
 TXDELAY=300        ; Transmit keyup delay in milliseconds
 TXTAIL=30        ; TX key down, in milliseconds, at packet end
 QUALITY=192        ; Quality factor applied to node broadcasts heard on
            ; this port, unless overridden by a locked route
            ; entry. Setting to 0 stops node broadcasts
 MINQUAL=168        ; Entries in the nodes table with qualities greater or
            ; equal to MINQUAL will be sent on this port. A value
            ; of 0 sends everything.
 MAXFRAME=7        ; Max outstanding frames (1 thru 7)
 FRACK=5000        ; Level 2 timout in milliseconds
 RESPTIME=1000        ; Level 2 delayed ack timer in milliseconds
 RETRIES=5        ; Level 2 maximum retry value
 PACLEN=236        ; Default max packet length for this port
 UNPROTO=BPQ32        ; BTEXT broadcast addrs format: DEST[,digi1[,digi2]]
 BCALL=N0CALL-1        ; BTEXT call. unstated defaults to APPL1CALL
 L3ONLY=0        ; 1=No user downlink connects on this port
 DIGIFLAG=1        ; Digipeat: 0=OFF, 1=ALL, 255=UI Only
 DIGIPORT=0        ; Port on which to send digi'd frames (0 = same port)
 USERS=0        ; Maximum number of L2 sessions, 0 = no limit
ENDPORT

The cable was DigiKey part number AE9879 which is wired thus:

9PinF      9PinF
1 <---------> 4
2 <---------> 3
3 <---------> 2
4 <---------> 1
5 <---------> 5
6  no wire   6
7 <---------> 8
8 <---------> 7
9 <---------> 9
shell to shell

While this cable is called a 'null modem' cable, there seems to be little agreement on how a null modem cable should really be wired.  See for example
http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/info/RS-232_null_modem.html for a number of different examples.

While this cable particular does work with PROTOCOL=KISS, it does not when PROTOCOL=NETROM.  BPQ32 seems to be prevented from transmitting by a hardware flow control issue.

I have interconnected two BPQ32 machines with PROTOCOL=NETROM in the past, and I believe the wiring above is preventing the link from working as NETROM.  I do recall that for NETROM I had to build the cable myself, and it was obviously different than the one which I am using successfully with KISS.  If I dig deep enough I might be able to lay my hands on that old working cable.

I also built a special cable which I used with BPQ32 to connect using PROTOCOL=NETROM to an actual TNC running TheNetX1J4.  I recall that on the 25 pin side that certain pins had to be jumpered to get the TNC to use NETROM protocol on that connector rather than conversational.  In fact there were a bunch of pins jumpered on each side.

Jim WU3V has suggested in another posting that when connecting two machines with PROTOCOL=KISS there could be the need for including polling and checksum.

The ideal protocol is NETROM, as then all these issues are taken care of by the NETROM protocol.

So I hope someone who can find the time can come up with a cable which works for either protocol between two machines.  I am certain it is possible.

Here is a NetROM Config that I used for many years between bpq32 and
old AK1A cluster running old bpq.

This is the bpq32 setup. The cable is and was a straight thru cable
2-2 and 3-3 and gnd.

Finally killed the old box when I moved to DXSpider.

to a TNC as well as to interconnect two PC's.

The document is written for PC's with 9 pin RS232 connectors, but with
a little effort you could readily translate this to those few
remaining PC's with 25 pin connectors!

I include examples for both KISS and NETROM protocol.

My document is limited in the case of TNC's to the TNC2 with a 25 pin
connector, with the KISS (usually JKISS ROM), the BPQKISS ROM and in
the case of NETROM protocol the TheNet/X1J4 ROM.

All the configurations I have shown have been tested, using BPQ32, and
found to work.

Good morning.

I'm trying to get BOTH ports to work with BPQ. I have one port (radio port2) on
the PK-900 which is the default port on the TNC working fine on VHF (1200 baud)

I want to add port one as 300Baud for my HF port and stop using my 1278B. I
take the PK-900 out of kiss mode, make sure that radio port one is using the
300 baud modem, radio port2 is running the 1200 baud modem. Put it in extended
kiss mode. Set up the bpqcfg.txt file, start it all up and all is well but the 300 baud
port is running 1200 baud! BPQ controls both ports as it should but the 300, isn't
300.

I did the command modem 10/4 which is the command for 300/1200. But it's like
when I put it in KISS is reverts back to 11/4 which is 1200/1200 modems.

Anyone ever have a PK-900 and played with it?

Perhaps I wasn't very clear - only the BPQ32 interface has this restriction, not the AGWPE interface in AR-Cluster.

I don't think having to run ARCluster as the first application is much of a problem, especially as BPQ32 now allows other applications to have NETROM Calls and Aliases. I'm not aware of any other applications which have to be APPL 1.

I think you meant that the BPQ-OCX interface in AR-Cluster requires that it be the first application in APPLICATIONS=.  I am successfully running both CC-Cluster (as the first application) and AR-Cluster (as the 4th application), with both using AGWtoBPQ (and thus with an applications mask of 0x9).  Momentarily I will try the same using the BPQ-OCX interface in AR-Cluster (with it still as the 4th application).  Perhaps that will not work...I never considered this possibility.  If it does not work certainly this can be fixed, but probably would require a change in AR-Cluster code?

Mike,

The BPQ32 interface in AR Cluster only allows it to be the first appliation, so you need to swap round the DX ands BBS params in APPLICATIONS= . When you add FBB, you need to tell it to use Application 2, You should probably also change the BBSCALL to mach the ARCluster callsign.

Got that. That's why it does communicate with both TNC ports. It's when I
set it to KISS (expanded) so I can use both ports it sticks port 1 back
to 1200 and won't leave it 300. I thought someone might have run across this
before. I'd like to use just the one TNC instead of tying up two.

But, everything else is working good. Thanks for the help everyone. I also
have BPQ and FBB working on the same computer as my DX Cluster nodes.
I'd like to be able to access the nodes thru BPQ but AR node wants to be the
"main" application.

John

John, G8BPQ

I am running AR Cluster and BPQ node.I want to run WIN FBB also using
the bpq.I run ar cluster and bpq starts now when I connect to the
node then type dx it says all ports in use but if I type bbs it
connects to the cluster.I want to fix this before adding FBB to the
computer.also ar cluster is registered in the call KC8FWD-7 here is
my bpq config I am using a KPC 3 plus just bought thanks Mike KC8FWD

and one
; in the PORTS section. This one is used to set the initial value for

PACLEN

With respect to the PK900, it has to be something in it's firmware that is switching, or not saving the radio baud rate.  BPQ32 would have nothing to do with that.  All BPQ32 can do in this regard is set the baud rate of the computers serial port, which it is obviously doing correctly.

Now on to your second paragraph...you say that "AR nodes want to be the 'main' application".  I think what you are referring to is the AR-Cluster application needs to be the first positional parameter in the APPLICATIONS parameter string?  This is true if you are using the BPQ-OCX interface.  AR-Cluster sets this as 0x1 and you cannot do anything about it.  That could be satisfactory if your additional applications can be set for other than the first position.  If your only other application is FBB, it can be set as position two (0x2).

As an alternative you could use the AGWtoBPQ interface to AR-Cluster, in which case you can set the applications mask as you wish, and thus AR-Cluster will not be tied down to the first position.

This is described in detail in my Installation Document which is part of the current BPQ32 installer release.

Dave

The BAUD setting in BPQCFG.TXT is the communication speed between the com port and TNC NOT the Radio speed

That should remain at 9600BAUD I am not familiar with the AEA TNC¢S but there is another setting for the Radio Speed.

Hi Ron,

Perhaps I wasn't very clear - only the BPQ32 interface has this restriction, not the AGWPE interface in AR-Cluster.

I don't think having to run ARCluster as the first application is much of a problem, especially as BPQ32 now allows other applications to have NETROM Calls and Aliases. I'm not aware of any other applications which have to be APPL 1.

John, G8BPQ

I think you meant that the BPQ-OCX interface in AR-Cluster requires that it be the first application in APPLICATIONS= .  I am successfully running both CC-Cluster (as the first application) and AR-Cluster (as the 4th application) , with both using AGWtoBPQ (and thus with an applications mask of 0x9).  Momentarily I will try the same using the BPQ-OCX interface in AR-Cluster (with it still as the 4th application) .

Thanks much. I also left out a command in the PK-900. Then someone before
me had the TX audio cranked all the way to the right.

It's all working great now. (I'm going to miss those DRSI cards).

Thanks to everyone for the help. After 20 years of the old FBB/BPQ, I'm
up to date.

Now that I have BPQ/FBB on the AR node computer I want to add RF access
the the AR node as well. That's what I was getting at.

Thanks Ron.

My only other app is FBB.

The BAUD setting in BPQCFG.TXT is the communication speed between the com port and TNC NOT the Radio speed

That should remain at 9600BAUD I am not familiar with the AEA TNC¢S but there is another setting for the Radio Speed.

Dave,
In the Forwarding of the WinFbb configuration Tool, check the Box,
Do Not Use Checksum with X-Protocol, Make sure you have a period
in front of you call sign in the V Statement
V .yourcall$Wyourpassword$W, if you are forwarding to a J or Tnos
station use V $Wyourcall$Wyourpassword$W
The period stops the Echo and start the file Tranfer, the $W for
JNOS
sends the needed CR for the handshaking between FBB and Jnos, also
if it is a J or TNos Station uncheck all the X-Protocol boxes in the
forward, J ot Tnos is not RLI Compatable (X-Option) I forward to two
JNos stations by Telnet with no problems..

what I changed to get it going. I suggest first you make sure that
your BPQ32 installation is working, say using BPQTerminal. Then
import someone's working FBB configuration. As you probably know,
all the important FBB configuration is held in the registry, in key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WinFbb]. WinFBB exports it's
configuration as a regedit-compatible text file. So all you need to
do is get someones file, rename it with a .reg extension, and double-
click it. Of course you will then have to change callsigns,
identities, etc to suit your station, but at least you will be
starting from a working system. It might be wise to remove any
existing WinFBB entry from the registry first (usual warnings about
using regedit apply!).

Setting FULLDUP=0 in the port definition should stop it, although this relies on the TNC obeying the relevant KISS command.

Dave,
In the Forwarding of the WinFbb configuration Tool, check the Box,
Do Not Use Checksum with X-Protocol, Make sure you have a period
in front of you call sign in the V Statement

It might be wise to remove any
existing WinFBB entry from the registry first (usual warnings about
using regedit apply!).

I don’t know if this is the answer you are looking for, if Full Duplex is set in BPQCFG.TXT and TNC

My BPQ ports will transmit on top of someone even if the TNC shows it having

a full good DCD. IT will just tromp on them anyway.

In the old BPQ (which is on my dead machine) I seem to remember a port

command to stop that. What was it?

I am quite interested in this issue.  I have always used the JKISS or BPQKISS ROM, with minimal wiring (RX,TX and GND) and FULLDUP=0, and have never noticed the TNC (MFJ1270C's) stomp on a signal being received (with the DCD led illuminated).

This does bring up the possibility that if the RX and TX frequencies are far removed, it may be possible to operate full duplex.  I had thought the hardware prevented this, but perhaps not?

With PROTOCOL=NETROM is is necessary that FULLDUP=1 for the interface to function.  Might it then transmit with DCD on and thus stomp on the received packet?

While I have always used the minimal cabling, might full cabling be required in some cases?

Dave,

Setting FULLDUP=0 in the port definition should stop it, although this relies on the TNC obeying the relevant KISS command.

With PROTOCOL=KISS, the FULLDUP parameter is passed to the TNC, and all the KISS implementations I know of will obey the param (ie not transmit if carrier is present and FULLDUP=0). Also all that I know will operate true full duplex (simultaneous transmit and receive) if the frequencies are far enough apart (probably crossband, but with good enough cavity filters could be in same band), No handshaking signals are used, so a 3 wire cable is fine.

With PROTCOL=NETROM, FULLDUP controls the link between the PC and TNC(s). With BPQ32 it has to be set to 1, and only supports 1 TNC, but with the old DOS BPQCODE you could set FULLDUP=0, and connect a stack of NET/ROM TNC's via a diode matrix. In this case the RTS and CTS lines control the matrix.

This question has come up before and John, G8BPQ, has said that BPQ32
does not support HDLC cards (of which the DRSI is one example).

I know they were convenient, but as ISA cards they are only compatible
with quite old machines. But obviously such old machines can still run
W9X....no offense intended to your 'old' computer! HI!

If you ever need more Ron, I have 3 or 4 with a couple external
DRSI "HF" modems also. I finally bit the bullet last month when
the computer died and went to a PK900 with BPQ32.

Your right, the DRSI's were the best. I thought about ordering
a Motherboard with 16 bit slots but it was $300.
