More information on multicast on HF at:  http://uspacket.org/network/index.php/board,5.0.html

I would wonder how well the PACSAT protocol suite would fit in for HF operation, as it is designed for something else entirely.

SPAR has developed an AMP ( Amateur Multicast Protocol ) that will transfer the data and confirm accuracy. If you would like to participate in developing this protocol, SPAR is the place to go. Nice folks there. Talk to W5ALT, who developed AMP and the AltCast AMP software suite that utilizes PSK modes.

Backtalk is not really what I would call 'multicast', not even on a wannabee basis... At best, I would credit it as a passive monitoring system.

Not sure if AMP is the best suited multicast protocoll for forwarding purpose, I'm personaly more for implementing the pacsat protocoll suit, it is already very wel documented, it has been used for forwarding already and can broadcast on demand rather then all the time.
Might need a bit of tweaking to accept broadcasts from more then one station but clients normaly won't have to deal with that. talking of clients, there is already a client for the pacsat protocoll called whisp on windows and there are also linux versions.

Hi Charlie.  I thjink we could make a Pactor link, but I have the disadvantage of Mountains North and South of me.   When you compatriot from Texas running Clover we had a few good links as part of NET098, but when my radio went South, I did not get back on Clover.  I look forward to that one day soon.  I am missing 2 radios so far, so I am limited.  I look forward to PTC-4 whic has doubled the speed of Pactor-3, but is not yet available in the US.  The trick is in speed.  I really liked 300 baud, and at one time ran 3 hf radios at once.  Different bands.  ALso needed
a freq stub on each radio.  All that for so little speeedd.  THen we found 9k6 which I ran with FLEXNET,  a very capable link to bbs and radio. I am down to one local port now which covers the whole Eastern USA at 1200.  IT is busy.  It shoots 300 down quickly.  I do like to play there with the node system and have made many friends.  I use TS-850's had 3 in seervice with one sapre, and one niight when I didnt pull the plug and ground the ants too 3 850 from me.  Spare is on now, with one in the mail, and one on a bench.  The ALC  control is a week link  to date.  The

Howdy, Bob!

RGR, the 300 baud stuff needs work - and I have a few ideas that would make a difference - but programmers are generally busy with their own projects so it may take a while to find somebody who will put in the time.

I've got a P-38 CLOVER board laying around that was donated - but nothing with ISA slots to plug it into!

Our VHF network here was designed and operated by drooling morons who set it up like WinLink, on a STAR network model with centralized control etc. They also pioneered non-ham linking between nodes, with "non-ham" being the operative word, there... TexNet is famous as being the only large-scale network covering three states to totally fold up and go away overnight, leaving no functional network behind, not even bits and pieces of it. From over 90 nodes - to zero nodes in less than a week is the legacy of TexNet.

Amateur Radio's most outstanding fail, bar none. - Can anyone here think of a bigger, more complete and abject failure on the part of amateur radio operators?

So, we have no VHF network here to speak of in Texas. Old, pre-TexNet TheNet stuff is what we mainly depend upon.

The same moron who had the bright idea for TexNet ( WD5IVD ) went on to organize the hostile takeover of TAPR in the late 80's by anti-packet amateur tcpip diptards.

That's how and why TAPR morphed over from the main booster of Packet radio to being its primary detractor. - A fine organization that was taken over by clueless anti-ham jerks who wouldn't know ham radio if it slapped them upside the head.

This is the primary reason why there has been zero development of Packet since the early 1990's, here in the USA.

Everybody wonders about that... Now you know why.

Our job is to party on despite TAPR, and all that it now stands for.

You'd think that they would have the decency to change the name. - But no.

It's still "Tuscon Amateur Packet Radio" - Ain't that a hoot?

I had to have my MB made for me with ISA slots for my DRSI cards. It wasn't cheap but I have about 20 of various type of cards and even a box of external 300 and even a 2400 buad modem. I just can't give up DRSI. They still work great.

The
displays give me a fit, but are easily repaired, andgotten back on line. I reallymiss all the guys on
NET098, and the others on 30 & 40.  AM thinking 300bd is ailing and we need to upgrade its
capabilities.  Sorry I got windy, but we'l chat again.  ONWARD AND UPWARD...

Hi Charlie... I never got to TXNET as it never came East.  However, I think we have soomethinbg better.  FLEXNET.  I seem to think hyou wrote an article on it.  TO say the least, it is bulletproof.
YOU dont need to update anything either.  IT remembers itself.  YOU put your destination in the 1st call (c wwwkkk), and it goesw by itselfto the station.  IF station off, it just tries later.  We have
over a hundred statiions in the Eastern area.  ONe being a spot yopu must kkonw.... on top of the hanger where the Hindenberg had burned.  Is not the highest in the state , but with others supporting one another, it works well. I am at a standstill with my Clover due radios.  Radios
radios, radios. Can never keep them all working at the same time.   Jerry says I am bashing, but
it is just but trying to deep on keeping on.  Like you had said, people dropping off all the time.
I have been working on DATV to keep  mind gooing.  LOts to  it.

Just a little PS, there are none of us driving Model A's any more.  There still neato to look at,

Yes I pointed out what I too offense too in your posting.. Here is why.

Yes you were running with miss information.. You state you and KO were all that are left of 098.. That is not true. That leads me to believe your station is in distress…  At lunch time today I rebooted…

Here is my heard list as of 3:30 PM 3 and a half hours later. So that statement is utterly untrue backed by the Many sysops on 098 that have stated they are on 098 still.. No not everyone is 24/7 but that is because the band is not open 24/7

What can I say…  your station is either not working well which I have to believe  due to your lightning damage that may not be getting the proper repair, you have already stated you have concerns about the guy doing the repairs. or everyone else’s is not working well. Hard to believe..

Packet 300 Baud HF works for us just fine… If you think it is not for you then all I can say is you are not using it correctly, or you have some far out parameters or your spare radio is in need of service..  if you wish to remain on 098 at 300 baud and seek help with parameters or testing to get to the problems you are having I am sure anyone of us would be glad to help. Jus t let me know as of now I have removed you from the roster based on last night’s post. I would be more than happy to re-add you.  J

Now as far as pactor.. I have to believe it’s not on my end or KJ6IX you say you cannot work either of us.. Yet you also say you cannot work anyone on 098 with the same radio..

Packet may not be your cup of tea.. If I wanted speed that rivaled the fastest most expensive modems I would have nothing here but PIII modems.. However I want a mix..

I have 300 Baud HF I have Robust packet that by the way is neato.. Winmor and PI II III yet no mode offsets any other mode..

The Skipnets on 098 147 and 035 are all 300 baud Packet. And unless everyone on the net agrees to something else will most likely remain 300 baud.  What you and I and anyone else does to have nets at higher speeds … is to set up the appropriate protocol and go with it on a net net.. i.e. RPR WINMOR PACTOR… I was just upset that you were trashing 300 Baud Packet because it does not work for you, yet we still do not know why it does not…

That is why I run HF 300 Baud Packet, rpr winmor and pactor on other nets… So your options are out there. No need to jump us and tell us how crappy our Model A is. If you do not like our Model A go take a bus, we will keep on rolling.. lol  J

Howdy Gang,

I was given a EJ-50U 1200/9600 baud TNC and it is running in my Alinco
DR-635T on 441.800. I am just testing to make sure it works ok and so far so
good.

I would like to hook it up to the BBS at 9600 baud 441.800 but do I have to
use the KISS mode to add another port (3 in my case ) in my BPQ32 Switch ??
I ask, as I wanted to use the DR-635 to monitor local VHF repeaters.

I have my KPC-3 with Kantronics DVR 2-2 in Kiss mode on 145.010 as port 1.
TCP/IP is on port 2.

BPQ can use multiple TNCs specifying another port that points to the TNC. I have not used that type of configuration as I want TNC sharing and application switching, so I use AGW. Hopes this helps.

If you want a private chat area the advice I'd give is to look at an internet based solution. I like to avoid cloud servers (Yahoo, etc.) and one that we use is the Spark client with the Openfire server. Set up the server on a PC and everyone else uses Spark. Private, works for regular chat and chat rooms, you can set up screen shares, whiteboards, A/V, etc.

See http://www.igniterealtime.org/

Of course, if the internet goes down you are out of luck.

Chatting with Mike last night on the chat I don't think he is looking for
privacy ,I think more that he is interested in creating a chat channel for his
ARES group so not to interfere with the "General Topic" area.
I beleive it is the /T "Name" command which will create the topic channel.
It is only available if someone stays within that channel..

He states they do not want anyone entering it from the outside… This is not possible unless they setup a chat where the only servers are within their ares group The T Command does not stop anyone else from entering..

They will have to setup their own closed chat group.

Chatting with Mike last night on the chat I don't think he is looking for privacy ,I think more that he is interested in creating a chat channel for his ARES group so not to interfere with the "General Topic" area.
I beleive it is the /T "Name" command which will create the topic channel.
It is only available if someone stays within that channel..

Ok Then just creating a "local chat network" would work for what they want then.
Sorry for the misreading..

I think I read somewhere is my tnc manual that you can set it up to egg nor any station that you are not connected to. It might be that you can set it up to be connected to more than one station at a time?

Happy New Year to all. Think snow !!!!

I think it is N9LYA or N9PMO that is forwarding traffic to my BBS but cannot
remember which one. Right now I only have Amsat, ARRL, History, and
Earthquakes being forwarded.

Please change that to all traffic repeat all traffic. I was on Bilmt BPQ32
node BBS and had a lot of laughs reading several posts and I would like to
receive them. So please again forward all traffic to K7MT.

Cheers and thanks.

I would think that would want as many as could get on the packet side always can have ones set back and learn.and never know when might get a new member from the ones on side lines.I would think the fact that they have taken time to put packet station on air would be a pplus, sence never know when one of the ares members stations would be down or out of range

Hi Ken,

I just checked and ye ha !!!! You opened the flood gates. It will be
interesting to see how many messages I get in the BBS.

Question on the BBS. I see the default for last message number is 60000. Is
that standard for BPQ32 BBS ??

Thanks again.

Oh for everyone who responded - I have the Alinco DR-635 with the internal
EJ-50U TNC running at 9600 baud. Just testing/learning for now as down the
road the packet folks are looking at a 9600 baud back bone in Montana.
Since the TNC was given to me, it is serving a good role !!! I was also
given a Paccomm TNC-220 setup for 9600 baud and maybe it will work for the
backbone node on Belmont Mountain hook to the 1200 paccom Tiny II ?

It may be old news but i have the new antenna up now and it seems to work fairly well.
I am scanning the usual frequencies and also 3.595 rpr and hf packet for close in users. this is hurricane alley
and frequent tornado watches/warnings. Sigs from you are good, but multipath is an issue at times. Nothing can be done for that unless we want to install a sturba curtan :)) I could install a tower here but i do not climb above 40 feet anymore...(too old and fat)!

I could not always get 7+ in the BPQMAILCHAT Filter to seem to stop all 7+ so I added 7+ to the badwords list…

Works ok now…
