Hi John
Thank you for all your hard work on coding BPQ32 and Mail Chat.
I successfully installed BPQ32 and Mail Chat today.
Presently it is running just fine.
I had no problems configuring the software.
I was going to ask you if you would like me to write a GUI configuration
program for BPQ32 but then I noticed you already had one.

Presently the system is only one port. So it is on a user channel with no mail
forwarding. I hope to add HF to the station so that in the future the station
will
have long haul forwarding.

Right now it is not much more than a local Mail box and converse server.

Again thank you John.

Let us hope we never witness the "Silence Of The Hams"

Posting reissued because links were broken!

A new release, BPQ32_5.2.1.3_20111017, for Windows, is available for download at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BPQ32/

This release updates BPQ32.dll, BPQMailChat, BPQTerminal, BPQTermTCP while adding two new programs: BPQAuth and BPQUIUtil.

The changelog is here: http://www.cantab.net/users/john.wiseman/Documents/BPQ32%20Installation.htm#Changelog

This release introduces a new installer which provides support for Vista and Windows 7 installations and updates.  The changes needed for this were massive to say the least.  The installer is up to 2015 lines of code...all of which I expect is perfect!  But you are warned:

WARNING:  Please make a copy of your BPQ32 installation directory before running the installer to perform an update just in case!  John Wiseman G8BPQ and I, Ron Stordahl, AE5E have done considerable testing and have reached the level of confidence needed to issue this release.  But it is better to be safe than sorry.  Backup your BPQ32 installation directory before updating!

This release may make significant changes to where the BPQ32 configuration is stored. and to the location of BPQMailChat files. If you use Vista or Windows 7, the first time you run this installer, your registry configuration for all BPQ32 programs will be moved from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.  And this just scratches the surface.

If your BPQMailChat files are not in folder BPQMailChat directly under your BPQ32 Directory, BPQMailChat will copy files to that folder the first time it is run, and change the BaseDir parameter to match. This is to simplify setting up a new MailChat installation, New Users have often had problems with getting the BaseDir set up, and placing it in a known position will avoid this.

BPQ32 now allows Programs and Configuration/Data Files to be stored in separate folders. This follows Microsoft's guidelines, and on Vista and Windows 7 gives added protection against accidental or malicious changes to software. The new installer allows you to choose separate locations for Programs and Data. For a new install, these will default to the Microsoft guidelines. If you are doing an update, these will default to your current installation. You may change either or both, however you should run the installer with the defaults initially to properly set up the registry. If your BPQMailChat installation has a lot of files, it will take extra time to make the transfer.  Be patient, it will complete.

The Microsoft guidelines are that programs should be installed in %programfiles% and application data in %appdata%.  This has been the recommendation since the introduction of XP, however Microsoft did not enforce these guidelines and they were not always observed, resulting in XP programs not working well on Vista and above.  With the introduction of Vista the guidelines are to some degree being enforced, with the result that annoying 'UAC - User Account Control' popups often occur when running otherwise well behaved programs. There is more to this, but the 'UAC' popups are the most visible part of this new paradigm.

The new installer actually extends the Microsoft guidelines back to XP, and even before depending upon additional details I will not go into at this time.

Existing Vista and Windows 7 installations can be transformed into installations which satisfy the guidelines by following this procedure:

1) Run the new installer on your existing installation taking all the defaults.  You will note that an additional window now offers a location for 'application data'.  It will be identical to your current program files location.  Simply accept the defaults and complete the update.  If you are satisfied with this you do not need to perform the additional steps.  Your installation will remain a 'single folder' installation, and thus technically not compliant.

2) Uninstall BPQ32 using the start menu shortcuts:
        Start>All Programs>BPQ32>Uninstall.
The uninstall actually saves your complete installation configuration.  The uninstall could also be done from the control panel should you wish.

3) Do a 'new' install.  The installer recovers your prior configurations, including BPQMailChat files such as mail, logs, etc., and offers locations for the program files and application in accordance with Microsoft's guidelines.  You are urged to accept the defaults  offered.

This procedure can also be done by XP users should you wish.

You can see how these locations are defined: On XP do Start>Run and enter %programfiles% and perhaps more interestingly enter %appdata%  In this later case you will see where other compliant applications are storing their application data.  On Vista and Windows 7 enter the same in the box immediately above the Start icon (it is no longer labeled Start, rather it is a MS 'Windows' icon.   The results will vary depending upon if your OS is a 32-bit or 64-bit version.  As BPQ32 is a 32 bit package it will be installed in Program Files (x86).

Unless you have changed the default 'folder options' in Windows Explorer, the application data folder, %appdata%, is protected and will not be shown.  You can change the options in Explorer to 'Show hidden files, folders and drives' should you wish.  However you do not need to do so because the shortcut 'Configure BPQ32' will open Windows Explorer for you to this 'hidden' folder with BPQ32.cfg already selected, ready for you to start your editor to make configuration changes.  To open this do:

     Start>All Programs>BPQ32>Configure BPQ32

All the shortcuts related to BPQ32 including the Documents are available in this manner.

The first step is to run the installer on an existing installation taking all the defaults.  It will take a bit more courage, after that, to uninstall and reinstall.  Then you will have a compliant installation, which should be beneficial.

This is not happening here, and I ran it on my Win2003 SR2 Server just as you
did! I know that john put in additional code into BPQMailChat to deal with
'unusual' installations. Were you running a beta release after the 20110411
release...John would have had to update you with some special task images in
such a case.

Update.. Hitting Cancel allowed it to run.. But seems every restart will require a hit of the cancel button?

Running for now…

Error I got was copy error 32

If I hit yes

Cancel proceeds to let BPQMAILCHAT run one time.

So are you ready?

Are you referring to the 'cancel' button in the installer? If it did complete,
try running the installer a second time to see if you get the same error. I
just tried here starting with the single folder prior release, and ran an update
with the new installer. It didn't complain. I then did an uninstall followed
by a reinstall, it also went successfully and how my program files are in
c:\program files\bpq32 and my application data is in %appdata%\bpq32 and it is
running fine. I see I immediately picked up bpqmailchat users.

We do know that there is a 'timing' problem in the NSIS installer system, but by
inserting delays following folder deletions, the deletions appear to complete
before the install continues. It is a situation I will be taking up with the
NSIS developers, however in John's and my testing the delay we inserted resolved
the issue.

But maybe not quite...it could be dependent pon hardware possibility.

It was typically resolved by rerunning the installer, probably because the
incidence of the issue with any single run was quite low.

This is not happening here, and I ran it on my Win2003 SR2 Server just as you did! I know that john put in additional code into BPQMailChat to deal with 'unusual' installations. Were you running a beta release after the 20110411 release...John would have had to update you with some special task images in such a case.

Jerry,

Are you sure you are running the MailChat from the installer, rather than the one  I sent you? It should be in the MailChat folder. Check that mailchat is 1.0.4.45 and bpq32.dll 5.2.1.3

Are you referring to the 'cancel' button in the installer? If it did complete, try running the installer a second time to see if you get the same error. I just tried here starting with the single folder prior release, and ran an update with the new installer. It didn't complain. I then did an uninstall followed by a reinstall, it also went successfully and how my program files are in c:\program files\bpq32 and my application data is in %appdata%\bpq32 and it is running fine. I see I immediately picked up bpqmailchat users.

We do know that there is a 'timing' problem in the NSIS installer system, but by inserting delays following folder deletions, the deletions appear to complete before the install continues. It is a situation I will be taking up with the NSIS developers, however in John's and my testing the delay we inserted resolved the issue.

But maybe not quite...it could be dependent pon hardware possibility.

It was typically resolved by rerunning the installer, probably because the incidence of the issue with any single run was quite low.

This is not happening here, and I ran it on my Win2003 SR2 Server just as you did! I know that john put in additional code into BPQMailChat to deal with 'unusual' installations. Were you running a beta release after the 20110411 release...John would have had to update you with some special task images in such a case.

Hi John Just checked.. That is what they both show MailCHat 1.0.4.45 and BPQ32 is 5.2.1.3

When I did install I shutdown rebooted and started up without anything running by disabling Startup Delayer.. Installed and turned on Startup Delayer and rebooted…

I am now rebooting again.. Just curious as to what that will do.

Ah!

check the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\G8BPQ\BPQ32\BPQMailChat\BaseDir. I think you will find it contains C:\Program Files\BPQ32\BPQMailChat\. Remove the \ from the end, and it should be ok.

It's getting late here. I'll issue a fix to the software in the morning.

This is not happening here, and I ran it on my Win2003 SR2 Server just as you did! I know that john put in additional code into BPQMailChat to deal with 'unusual' installations. Were you running a beta release after the 20110411 release...John would have had to update you with some special task images in such a case.

Hi All

Got a funny one here, updated 2 computers with the latest version. One with one UDP port running in windows 7 SP 1, no problems working perfectly and the other with four RF ports and one UDP port running in Windows 98 SE. This is running OK but in the Terminal screen, BBS and Chat consuls once the screen is full the text runs below the screen and you have to manually scroll the screen down to read the output. Hope this makes sense.

Ah!

check the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\G8BPQ\BPQ32\BPQMailChat\BaseDir. I think you will find it contains C:\Program Files\BPQ32\BPQMailChat\. Remove the \ from the end, and it should be ok.

Jerry,

Are you sure you are running the MailChat from the installer, rather than the one  I sent you? It should be in the MailChat folder. Check that mailchat is 1.0.4.45 and bpq32.dll 5.2.1.3

This is not happening here, and I ran it on my Win2003 SR2 Server just as you did! I know that john put in additional code into BPQMailChat to deal with 'unusual' installations. Were you running a beta release after the 20110411 release...John would have had to update you with some special task images in such a case.

Dave,

It looks like it has loaded the sample bpq32.cfg.

Are you still using the old name bpqcfg.txt for your config file, rather than the current bpq32.cfg? If so, you need to delete the sample bpq32.cfg from the
C:\Documents and Settings\dave\Application Data\bpq32. The software looks first for bpq32.cfg, then bpqcfg.txt. It would also be wise to rename the file to bpq32.cfg to avoid any problems in the future.

I'd also be interested to know if you deliberately chose to move the config/data to C:\Documents and Settings\dave\Application Data\bpq32. By default, I'd expect the installer to leave files in the current location.

73,
John

A new release, BPQ32_5.2.1.3_20111017, for Windows, is available for
download at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BPQ32/

This release updates BPQ32.dll, BPQMailChat, BPQTerminal, BPQTermTCP
while adding two new programs: BPQAuth and BPQUIUtil.

The changelog is here:
http://www.cantab.net/users/john.wiseman/Documents/BPQ32%20Installation.
htm#Changelog

This release introduces a new installer which provides support for Vista
and Windows 7 installations and updates.  The changes needed for this
were massive to say the least.  The installer is up to 2015 lines of
code...all of which I expect is perfect!  But you are warned:

WARNING:  Please make a copy of your BPQ32 installation directory before
running the installer to perform an update just in case!  John Wiseman
G8BPQ and I, Ron Stordahl, AE5E have done considerable testing and have
reached the level of confidence needed to issue this release.  But it is
better to be safe than sorry.  Backup your BPQ32 installation directory
before updating!

This release may make significant changes to where the BPQ32
configuration is stored. and to the location of BPQMailChat files. If
you use Vista or Windows 7, the first time you run this installer, your
registry configuration for all BPQ32 programs will be moved from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER.  And this just scratches the
surface.

If your BPQMailChat files are not in folder BPQMailChat directly under
your BPQ32 Directory, BPQMailChat will copy files to that folder the
first time it is run, and change the BaseDir parameter to match. This is
to simplify setting up a new MailChat installation, New Users have often
had problems with getting the BaseDir set up, and placing it in a known
position will avoid this.

BPQ32 now allows Programs and Configuration/Data Files to be stored in
separate folders. This follows Microsoft's guidelines, and on Vista and
Windows 7 gives added protection against accidental or malicious changes
to software. The new installer allows you to choose separate locations
for Programs and Data. For a new install, these will default to the
Microsoft guidelines. If you are doing an update, these will default to
your current installation. You may change either or both, however you
should run the installer with the defaults initially to properly set up
the registry. If your BPQMailChat installation has a lot of files, it
will take extra time to make the transfer.  Be patient, it will
complete.

The Microsoft guidelines are that programs should be installed in
%programfiles% and application data in %appdata%.  This has been the
recommendation since the introduction of XP, however Microsoft did not
enforce these guidelines and they were not always observed, resulting in
XP programs not working well on Vista and above.  With the introduction
of Vista the guidelines are to some degree being enforced, with the
result that annoying 'UAC - User Account Control' popups often occur
when running otherwise well behaved programs. There is more to this, but
the 'UAC' popups are the most visible part of this new paradigm.

The new installer actually extends the Microsoft guidelines back to XP,
and even before depending upon additional details I will not go into at
this time.

Existing Vista and Windows 7 installations can be transformed into
installations which satisfy the guidelines by following this procedure:

1) Run the new installer on your existing installation taking all the
defaults.  You will note that an additional window now offers a location
for 'application data'.  It will be identical to your current program
files location.  Simply accept the defaults and complete the update.  If
you are satisfied with this you do not need to perform the additional
steps.  Your installation will remain a 'single folder' installation,
and thus technically not compliant.

2) Uninstall BPQ32 using the start menu shortcuts:
        Start>All Programs>BPQ32>Uninstall.
The uninstall actually saves your complete installation configuration.
The uninstall could also be done from the control panel should you wish.

3) Do a 'new' install.  The installer recovers your prior
configurations, including BPQMailChat files such as mail, logs, etc.,
and offers locations for the program files and application in accordance
with Microsoft's guidelines.  You are urged to accept the defaults
offered.

This procedure can also be done by XP users should you wish.

You can see how these locations are defined: On XP do Start>Run and
enter %programfiles% and perhaps more interestingly enter %appdata%  In
this later case you will see where other compliant applications are
storing their application data.  On Vista and Windows 7 enter the same
in the box immediately above the Start icon (it is no longer labeled
Start, rather it is a MS 'Windows' icon.   The results will vary
depending upon if your OS is a 32-bit or 64-bit version.  As BPQ32 is a
32 bit package it will be installed in Program Files (x86).

Unless you have changed the default 'folder options' in Windows
Explorer, the application data folder, %appdata%, is protected and will
not be shown.  You can change the options in Explorer to 'Show hidden
files, folders and drives' should you wish.  However you do not need to
do so because the shortcut 'Configure BPQ32' will open Windows Explorer
for you to this 'hidden' folder with BPQ32.cfg already selected, ready
for you to start your editor to make configuration changes.  To open
this do:

     Start>All Programs>BPQ32>Configure BPQ32

All the shortcuts related to BPQ32 including the Documents are available
in this manner.

The first step is to run the installer on an existing installation
taking all the defaults.  It will take a bit more courage, after that,
to uninstall and reinstall.  Then you will have a compliant
installation, which should be beneficial.

Hi Mike,

I saw a message yesterday talking about the NEW BPQ32 Update.
I downloaded it from the Yahoo  Groups site this morning.

What is the procedure to install it? Does it overwrite the BPQ32.CFG file?
Also does it keep any of  the other settings for the Mail/Chat and anything
else or does it just do a complete new install?

I have backup of my BPQ32.CFG. I back it up after each change. Don’t want
to have to re-create it.

As for the other setings in Mail/Chat I can take screen shots of the current
settings so Ican get them back the right way.

Good luck with your router woes. Looks like you might be back up. I see that
my system shows connection to yours.

As a quick measure I have uploaded new version of BPQ32_5.2.1.3_20111017.exe to
this forum and also to my web server.

The change was so small I took this quick approach to deal with the tiny
fraction of existing user that are still using 'bpqcfg.txt' rather than
'bpq32.cfg'.

The installer tests to see if 'bpqcfg.txt' exists AND if 'bpq32.cfg' does not
exist. In this case it renames 'bpqcfg.txt' to 'bpq32.cfg' in keeping with what
has been standard now for quite a few years.

The installer does attempt to deal with the many small changes that have
occurred over many years, but I missed this one!

Yes Jerry...however someone was still using 'bpqcfg.txt', and got tripped up.  Just look back in the postings and you will see it.  I am doing this on my cell phone and its too awkward for me to check just now.
