Subject: Losing nodes in BPQ
g7thl
Send Email Send Email

Good morning all! New to the group here and got a question:

I've set up BPQ32 on a PC which runs my PMS and serves as an
Internet link, this is connected to a BSX2 TNC running TheNEt X1J4
which is the local radio port.
Now the problem is that I got a nice nodes list from Eric G0CGL
yesterday when we connected ofr the first time yet this morning when
I checked on the system all the nodes were gone apart from my own 2,
a local RF one and Eric's node itself.
I looked in the monitor window and even my own two nodes were still
sending out the entire list in a nodes croadcast, so I checked the
BPQNODES file and they were still listed in there.
I then rebooted the system and the nodes were back!
I'm sure I'm making a very simple and stupid mistake, but I'm hoping
someone can point it out to me!
Do I have to set routes up for every station in the BPQNODES file?
IF so, is there a way of doing it that doesn't involve typing each
on in manually?

Many Thanks 73's Dave G7THL.

Hi Dave,

First, the BPQNODES file is only updated when BPQ32 closes, so even if the nodes are lost from the running system they stay in the file. If you shut down normally, BPQNODES will be updated, and the nodes lost. if you just reboot, you get them back, This is assuming you have SAVENODES=1 in your bpqcfg.txt.

You said you got a nodes list from G0CGL - was this via an AXIP link?

As to why you are losing the nodes,  I would need more information on your setup and configuration to comment. If you send me your bpqcfg.txt and a rough diagram or description of your system (preferably off-list) , I'll see if I can help.

John G8BPQ

Subject: A new release of BPQ32 is available at the BPQ32 Yahoo Group
ron_n5in

A new beta release of BPQ32 is available in the files section of the
BPQ32 Yahoo Group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BPQ32/files/BPQ32_410aBeta19Feb2007

Alternate download URL:

http://dxspots.com/BPQ32/BPQ32_410aBeta19Feb2007.zip
http://dxspots.com/BPQ32/BPQ32_410aBeta19Feb2007.htm

  From the beta document:

7.17 19/Feb/2007:

BPQ32 has undergone an extensive rewrite. BPQ32, which was in the prior
release written in MacroAssembler and Visual Basic V4, has been
converted to MacroAssembler and C++.

VB40032.dll, mscomm32.ocx, cwswk32.ocx, bpqmon32.exe and bpqterm.exe are
no longer used and have been removed from this release. All the
functions of bpqmon32 and bpqterm are now incorporated in BPQTerminal.exe.

This release has been exhaustively tested, but as you probably
understand that is no guarantee! That’s why we do betas! However I have
been running it around the clock on two machines for nearly a month and
have confidence in it.

One of the most significant enhancements is BPQ32’s ability to support
multiple BBS’s using L4 connections, which can optionally broadcast
their existence in node broadcasts. An example of this can be found
above in section 3.06. That example is, I admit, a bit strained and thus
I await to hear of working instances of a BBS plus a DX Cluster using
this new capability. In the BPQ32 Yahoo Group files section are a number
of new archives which related to specific applications, such as FBB,
DXSpider, Ethereal, DEDHost and 16 bit. I am, on my test system. running
multiple BBS’s with different aliases/calls, specifically AR-Cluster and
CC-Cluster, without difficulty. The configuration I am using is in
..\Examples\Multiple_Apps\. Studying bpqcfg.txt from that directory
should help clarify the needed configuration.

Users have commented on the number of separate running programs which
make up a BPQ32 system, and the space this takes on the task bar. With
this release all running components of BPQ32 can condense into a single
box with the letters ‘BPQ’ in black on a yellow box in the task tray.
It’s still all running…you are just not so often reminded of this fact!

A new parameter BTEXT, i.e. beacon text, has been added to the main
section. This text is sent at rate BTINTERVAL to the UNPROTO address.
The UNPROTO address parameter has been removed from the main section and
now is stated in the ports sections. As a result you can send this UI
packet to different addresses depending upon the port number. In
addition a new ports section parameter BCALL has been added. This is the
sending call that will be used for the beacon text on a per port basis,
thus allowing different calls depending upon the port number. If BCALL
is not stated it will default to the value of the BBSCALL.

If you compile bpqcfg.txt with UNPROTO in the main section, a non-fatal
warning will be issued, reminding you to update your configuration. The
changes are such that you should be able to compile your existing
bpqcfg.txt configuration, but I believe you will want to update to take
full advantage of the enhancements. The folder \Examples\ contain
example configurations corresponding to this release.

There is a new folder: \KissRoms\ along with new documentation for JKISS
and BPQKISS.

I had hoped to release this beta as an installer, however the changes
were extensive enough to make doing so very complicated. As such this
release is a ZIP archive. If you are going to unpack this to an existing
BPQ32 directory be sure to first save copies of your configuration
files! Unpack the zip with ‘use folder names’ so that the subdirectories
will be created. After the install run, by double clicking,
SetRegistryPath.exe as well as RegBPQctrl.bat.

And I am shortly going on vacation, so wish me luck that I don’t break a
leg skiing in the Colorado Rocky Mountains! I will have my laptop with
me, but I am not sure if I will have internet access . I suggest that
you post questions on the BPQ32 Yahoo Group instead of trying to contact
me directly.

I hope I have not made some serious blunders, having double and triple
checked. I wanted to get this out before I leave.

First thanks to Ron for all the work he has done on testing this release.

Then an apology - I have rewritten bpqtnc2 and vcom config programs, but
neglected to update the documentation. I'm going to be away for a few days,
but will update the docs when I get back. In the meantime, I'll be checking
email, and will try to answer any queries. Bpqtnc2 has had a major rewrite,
with the main code converted from Visual Basic to C. if you have had
problems with the previous version, I'd appreciate you trying this and
letting me know how you get on.

I've also collected together some of the documentation, and added sections
on the BPQ API, for anyone who would like to write applications to interface
to bpq32. (This still contains the old bpqtnc2 and vcom docs, though). See
www.g8bpq.org.uk.

Thank you John.
I'll make every attempt to get this release loaded on my home
station this week and give the bpqtnc2 <-> Winlink Classic
interface a workout.

Anyone know how to setup a link between 2 computers on a WAN, one
running BPQ32 and one running AGWPE ?

My goal is to establish a link between a BPQ32 Node and a W2LK Telpac

I have the new release up and running fine (for 2 hours!). My only
comment so far is a minor one of the loss of the maximise button on the
terminal window. I don't use AGW so cannot comment on it. Status.exe I
will investigate.

Ron & John,

I installed the latest release of BPQ more then 48 hrs a go
no problems with it so far i haven't had a chance to add a
second application, the first appl is a connection to Ron's
N5IN DXC, the second Appl will take AGWPE out as the TNC'S
controller, and use the AGWtoBPQ.exe for Telpac, AGWPE
is just one more program not needed, unless one uses a
sound card, then AGWPE can still be used in front of BPQ.

The installation went fine, the installation set the Registry
Path fine, noticed you have to Move the BPQ32.dll manually to the
Windows/System32 Folder, in the case of XP and W2K.

Great job as allways.

Glad to hear it went fine. You don't have to move bpq32.dll to the
system directory. I tested this and bpq32 will first look in the
application directory, and only then if it does not find bpq32.dll
will it try the system directory.

If that isn't the case, then I will be very surprised. I tested that
very thing with W2K and XP before I released it.

Let me know if I am wrong....

I will release an installer after a while, I am studying this now,
then this question will be behind us.

If you only run programs using bpq32.dll from the BPQ32 directory, then bpq32.dll can stay there. But for most users, they will be running software that uses bpq32.dll from other places - eg FBB, UIView 32 and AR-Cluster, so must move bpq32.dll to a system directory. It will work in either system or system32.

I think Ron uses both UIVIew and AR-Cluster, but configues them to use the AGWPE interface, and runs AGWtoBPQ. So all his BPQ software is loaded from the bpq32 directroy, and he gets away with leaving bpq32.dll there.

Incidentally, the latest version will warn you if you try to run it from more than one directory.

John G8BPQ

Opps...I should have known this! I did consider this question and so I
tested it by putting an older version in the systems directory and bpq
picked the newer version in the user directory, but you have explained
why that happened. When I get back Ill create a simple installer that
takes care of this, until I can design the full installer that I am
contemplating which considers every possible install option yet is easy
to use by newcomers.

In the mean time here is where the user should place a copy of the
latest bpq32.dll:

W95/98/ME in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
WNT/2K in C:\WINNT\system32
WXP/2003Server in C:\WINDOWS\system32.

John mentioned below that you can use system instead of system32 in some
cases, I suppose the search path looks in system32 first, but just to be
sure make sure for WNT/W2K/WXP that you have it in system32 and not system.

Since you have run the zip unpack with replace, you will also have the
new version in your install directory..which can do no harm.

Ill be skiing today at Steamboat Springs Colorado. First day out this
season so I should be a wreck by the end of the day!

"Since you have run the zip unpack with replace, you will also have the

Yes it will do harm! All BPQ32 programs must run bpq32.dll from the same place, not just copies of the same version.. So you need to move the dll from the install diectory to the system directory, not copy it.

The simple way is a KISS link using a BPQ Virtual COM port. But what are you trying to achieve? It may be possible to use AGWtoBPQ, and eliminate AGWPE.

Regards,
John

Could someone take me step by step setting up a link between AGWPE and a
BPQ32 switch running on the same machine ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi John,

Ultimately, I want to run Telpac and link it, via a UDP socket, to a
switch running on another machine running elsewhere (on the Internet).

John,

I tried a kiss link, that did not work. I also tried just running
AGWtoBPQ, that also did not work.

In both cases Telpac recognized that AGW was running but I could not
connect to Telpac through the switch.

The kiss link produced the 'All ports in use' message.

AGWtoBPQ produced a loop when I tried to run BPQTerminal.

Great job on the new release John and Ron,
In addition to having applications reduced into the sys tray, having
MINQUAL at the individual port level is a great enhancement too. And
John, thank you for adding the ability to toggle supervisory frames in
the BPQTerm monitor.

I am having some difficulty with Telpac though. This problem of "No
AGWPE Host Sessions available" has been discussed here before but I
can't seem to locate the messages pertaining to it. When I first seen
this, I thought it might be able to correct it by using the
instructions provided in message #274 and edited each port ID
accordingly. That did not clear the problem.

I hate to rehash what has been already discussed but some guidance on
this would be appreciated.

Art,

The "No AGWPE Host Sessions available" is usually caused by a mismatch between the callsign registered by the application with AGWtoBPQ, and the BPQ Application Calls, This used to be relatively simple, as AGWtoBPQ always used the BBSCALL. Now that BPQ supports multiple application calls, AGWtoBPQ uses the APPLCALL corresponding to the APPLMASK set in AGWtoBPQ.

As an example, I've been testing Telpac with call GM8BPQ, BBSCALL of GM8BPQ and APPLMASK=1. But I've also used Telpac call GM8BPQ-5, APPL5CALL=GM8BPQ-5, and APPLMASK=0x10.

So if you used to use an APPLMASK of 1, then the new code should work the same as before, but if you were using another APPLMASK value you will need to set up an APPLCALL to match the APPLMASK.

The problem discussed in Msg 274 is now fixed, You no longer need the "Portn with " on the front of each description when using Telpac.

Incidentally, I've found a problem with flow control between the new AGWtoBPQ and Telpac. The attached should fix it.

Regards,
John

Quick question for anyone that knows how to configure bpqcfg for a dual
port tnc, ei kam or similar. If I read the samples correctly, you need
to have two Ports definitons with the same RS232 port. Then specify
which port on the tnc is applicable by using the Channel command.

Anyone done this? Just wondering if my thinking is correct in needed
two separate Ports statement, one for the vhf side and one for the HF
side

Thanks

Karl,

Yes you are correct. You need two port definitions, one with CHANNEL=A and one
with CHANNEL=B (assuming the KAM is in the default config). You may want to
change paclen and the timing params for the HF port.

Hello,
I have setup a BPQNODE (F6KBK-7), with AGW support for DXSpider
(Dxcluster F6KBK-3). This part is working well. Users and other
clusters from the front-end F6KBK node (Flexnet) can connect.
On second hand, I would like to link a NTNET (Flexnet network) to some
other NTNET over Internet as BPQ32 can solve DNS routing (partners
have dynamic IP), tru a AXUDP port.
From the bpqnode, KBK-7, I can connect Node F6KBK-8 (NTNET) and
distant node (F6xxx), tru the same UDP port.
I can see in monitor the connect request from both side (KBK-8->F6xxx,
or F6xxx-> F6KBK-8)
But the node F6KBK-8 could to link with the distant node tru BPQ32.
So it is possible?
Partners are with call F6KMO, F1BBI are declared "in routes"...
Enable_link = Y (in bpqcfg.txt), bpqnode.dat is OK.
NTNET (KBK-8) and BPQ32 on same machine
Can KBK-7 (bpq) digipeat frames F6KBK-8<>F6xxx?

Thanks

Wonder if any one out there has tried this. If so some general
pointers would be appreciated.

First a description of the station.

One PC is dedicated to running MSYS under DOS. Only reason I do is
because for start up and trouble shooting etc I can keep the BBS
running without bringing it down all the time. MSYS runs fine and
forwards just fine on HF and VHF as well as over a serial port to my
DXCluster

On a second PC I am running BPQ32 along with DxNet. BPQ32 has one
port set aside for Telnet purposes. By using the No-IP suggestion that
Ron has made I get around the static IP address problems associated
with trying to run a telnet session. Telnet sessions connect to BPQ32
switch just fine

So thats the background. Here is the issue.
Another station wishes to send bulletins via a telnet session from
MSYS to me. Would he have to be running BPQ32 as well or any idea on
how to write a script to use with MSYS to access the telnet. Access
to the telnet session is Username, Password, Port.

Any suggestions would be helpful

Karl

I have been very successful operating DOS BPQ like this for several
years. Using both a KAM Plus and a KPC-4. But when I tried to replace
the KPC-4 with a KAM XL it failed. BPQ seems to not be able to switch
the ports on the KAM XL.

Chat4 does work with the BPQ1632 subsystem, but FastChat, G7LSQ's development of it, is rather better. you can download it from http://skyscraper.fortunecity.com/digital/3/bpq/fastchat.zip.

If you need any help getting it going, let me know.

I am posting the following on behalf of Mike Melnik N9PMO who has
WinFbb, TELPAC, UI-View as well as a easy user connect remotely to my
AR-Cluster working. I worked with Mike on the phone and together we
got it going.

I have updated the folder WinFBB 7.01 Setup in the files section with
a revised description of the procedure.

This per Mike:

I am running WinFbb7.01Alpha, TELPAC, UI-VIEW and a DX Cluster connect
using BPQ32U_410A
I run WinFBB in the BPQ Mode
TELPAC in the AGW Mode
UI-VIEW in the BPQ mode
And the DX Cluster is just a connection to an AXIP DX Cluster, all has
been running fine
The following is the BPQCFG.TXT Application setup

Note that the L4APPL= is no longer supported!

APPLICATIONS=BBS,,*SYS,DX/C XXXXX,TELPAC;
APPL4CALL=N9PMO-3
APPL4ALIAS=DXC
APPL4QUAL=255
APPL5CALL=N9PMO-10
APPL5ALIAS=TELPAC
APPL5QUAL=255
;

The Appl Mask Value in the AGWtoBPQ.EXE/Configuration for my
application is 0x10

Comment by N5IN: It's 0x10 because the first application interface is
via a DLL rather than via AGWtoBPQ. If in this example WinFBB
interfaced to BPQ32 via AGWtoBPQ, this mask would have been 0x11, i.e.
the hex sum of 1 and 16 (because in APPLICATIONS= the first and fifth
positional parms are used (i.e. 2^(1-1) + 2^(5-1)).

Mike continues:

Just a Note about the Port MINQUAL= on previous versions of BPQ was
always available
The statement just had to be added in, I was using it the 409 Version.

Big thanks to John Wiseman and Ron Stordahl for their continuous support.

Hello!

I am wondering about the minimum files needed to operate DOS BPQ. - I
am wanting to operate BPQ from a RAM Disk.

Also: Any tricks or tips for reducing or eliminating disk activity
would be very helpful. - If I could eliminate any disk writes during
operation, then the RAM Disk would not be needed and that would
simplify things.

Alternately: Is there a way to operate DOS BPQ in one disk/directory

Hi Charles,

Apart from DOS, all you actually need is bpqcode.exe or switch.exe, bpqcfg.bin and bpqnodes. Normally if you were running bpqcode, you would want pac4.exe, so you could monitor what was happening. And you might want bpqnodes.exe to enable you to save the nodes table, or sysoph and a password file if you want to remotely manage the node.

Switch.exe and pac4 write a single line to a log file, giving the time they started. Apart from that there is no disk activity once the code is loaded.

Regards,
John
