I'm not at all sure there is a problem with that. The way it is now, you can trap all uses of the word.

Here is an example:

fish
fished
fisher
fishing
gofish
gonefishing

If you want to trap only ONE use of the word, then use _fish_

As far as packet here we are looking for any messages.. It will help us see what we have here in Indiana and outside as well as how long it takes from time sent to time received.. We realize not all will be here on the 17th but will look at over all to see how we are connected.. J

Just a quick reminder of the Statewide RACES Test July 17th.

From: West, Don
Sent: Thursday, May 13, 2010 6:16 PM
Subject: Statewide RACES Test July 17, 2010

Indiana EMA Directors and RACES Team Members,

Please find attached the details of the Statewide RACES Test scheduled for July 17.  As promised, I am getting the information to you much earlier that I did for the January test.

I apologize for the length of the document, but I have included considerably more detail in this announcement than before in order to encourage increased participation in modes other than HF SSB voice.  I have also made some changes to the test process in order to more accurately measure our capabilities under the kinds of conditions we might reasonably expect after a major disaster, such as an earthquake.

Of particular interest to IDHS is packet radio communications due to its ability to provide communication that is:

·        Not dependant upon the Internet

·        Error checking

·        Permits unattended operation

·        Text based

·        Utilizes “store and forward” technology

·        Accessible by local Hams

Please encourage your teams to develop this capability.

In addition, while access to WebEOC is strictly a local decision, EMA Directors should know that IDHS Response welcomes participation on WebEOC by RACES Volunteers.  Of particular interest along these lines, would be reports of sever weather gleaned from local severe weather nets.  All six National Weather Service partners serving Indiana now have access to WebEOC.  While the Indy NWS Office has a robust system of reporting by Hams trained in weather spotting directly to the NWS, to my knowledge the remaining NWS Offices do not.  In the next few weeks, I will be sending more details concerning the recommended process.

I want to sincerely thank the many EMA Directors who have gone beyond the call of duty to recruit RACES Volunteers and work with the Ham community.

Best regards,

Don West

Communications Director

Emergency Response Division

Indiana Dept of Homeland Security

It does not work like that. _fish_ would only match _fish_.

Once fixed, a line from the file (it can be a phrase as well as a single word) will only match if it is preceeded and followed by a non-alphabetic character.

This is a problem with any word-based filter. Some words are only offensive in a certain context. Dick is a good example, but there are many others.

I agree that matching within a word (as the code does with the current bug) is unworkable,

I suggest a layered approach.

A keyword filter to catch on words that should never be allowed, but should not
or rarely create false hits.

Then we need the ability to filter (reject/hold) by callsign.

Thankfully problems have been pretty rare so far. Outside of the abuses of @WW
at times, this event is the first problem I recall lately. That said, a sysop
needs some tools in BPQBBS to better deal with these problems when they do
inevitably crop up.

I would suggest that any one running a BBS, to check recent

inappropriate language etc in them, suffice to say, I killed them all.

Now, BPQBBS let them all thru ................. NOT GOOD.

Please check your BBS`s.

No changes to port qualities. They come in at 195, 190, and 190 RMS, BBS, CHT. This one is just to one station.  I have the AXIP set to quality 195.

This is one of two nodes that I normally have and the other is off-line at the molment.

There's some math that goes on against the arriving quality. I'll have to dig
out my notes on it.

Those arriving quality values you see in monitor will be lowered by the "math"
and thus probably below your minqual of 168 (if you haven't changed that).

It also seems that nodes that are local apps on an AXIP link neighbor are
handled differently.

Here is a great article on calculating the node quality from node to
node....

Well, I must be missing something... the new version of BadWords is not as good as the original.
It doesn't seem to trap anything except a single word now.

Perhaps I need some instruction on how it is supposed to be used..

I see it like this:
Dick should not be in your "BadWords" unless you want to do a LOT of work. It is like "gay". In one sense it is an okay word, but in another sense it is very bad... so, you have the choice of letting them all thru, or of checking them all. I would let them thru.

Po should be entered in your BadWords as _Po_ instead of Po. Then only Po would be trapped.

However, John's new version does not seem to do as well as the "broken" version. Too bad....

I'm not at all sure there is a problem with that. The way it is now, you can trap all uses of the word.

Here is an example:

fish
fished
fisher
fishing
gofish
gonefishing

If you want to trap only ONE use of the word, then use _fish_

I am puzzled as to what doesn't work in John's new
version. In my testing it is catching exact word
matches perfectly. Seems that if you need it catch
other words or phrases, the simple solution is to add
them to the list, as matching a word within a word
would create extra work on the part of the sysop. And
it is a simple matter to add a callsign to list if
you want to filter out everything from one callsign.

gofish

If "fish" were a 4-letter bad word, then to trap:
fisherman
fishing
fishup
motherfisher
fishyou
...and a hundred other ways some people use the bad word "fish"
you would have to think of, and enter each variation of all possible
weirdo combinations they could come up with.

To trap a word-within-a-word, you would just have to enter ONE bad word.. fish.

Actually my Min value is 90.  I have tried lock routes.  I am receiving his node broadcasts but it looks like he isn't getting mine.  Just upgraded to the latest version and no change.

All kind of a puzzle it was working fine until I tried to install winmor back a week or so ago. Now its just not dealing with him.  My other guy will be back after the holiday so I will see if he's working with me.

Those arriving quality values you see in monitor will be lowered by the "math" and thus probably below your minqual of 168 (if you haven't changed that).

It also seems that nodes that are local apps on an AXIP link neighbor are handled differently.

Thanks Ken for the link. This is a direct AXIP link that is always up and no hops so no worries there.  Was working and quit.  Messed up something no doubt somewhere.

With the MINQUAL=90 setting, you may have flooded your Nodes table because
Of the low value, I would set them back to 168 then compile the bpqcfg.txt
Clear the nodes, And rerun BPQ32

BPQ32 Console, Actions, Clear Nodes, RE-Read bpqcfg.Bin and Reconfigure
Node.

Actually my Min value is 90.  I have tried lock routes.  I am receiving his
node broadcasts but it looks like he isn't getting mine.  Just upgraded to
the latest version and no change.

All kind of a puzzle it was working fine until I tried to install winmor
back a week or so ago. Now its just not dealing with him.  My other guy will
be back after the holiday so I will see if he's working with me.

Guys this is a mathematical equation, you can choose any portqual and any
minqual but the entire network has to follow suit.
For directly heard nodes and those that are known for good connectivity lock
those routes to a higher value by at least one octive.
If they do go down alternate routes can take over until their return.

Too bad....

I agree that matching within a word (as the code does with the current bug) is unworkable,

Call me stupid but what is bad about po???

If its short for pissed off I have no problem with that…

Lol

I would hate to see a large number of held messages just to be holding them…   They do take more time to go thru when you have to read each one and find a large number are there just becase they are part of a larger word.. The result would be mass usage of the kh command … I am afraid.. Lots of lost messages for no reason.

I'm not at all sure there is a problem with that. The way it is now, you can trap all uses of the word.

Here is an example:

fish
fished
fisher
fishing
gofish
gonefishing

If you want to trap only ONE use of the word, then use _fish_

In the example configurations I have chosen:

QUALITY=192
MINQUAL=168

These are admittedly arbitrary.  With these values the result is that nodes that I hear directly, and their local services (for which APPLnQUAL=255) will show in my nodes list.  For the N5IN-14 node this results in what I feel is a large enough nodes list.

If these choices do not result in as many entries in your 'N' list as you wish, then the approach I would take would be to set MINQUAL=144 or perhaps even slightly lower.  You can determine this experimentally.

Because many nodes use quite different values, especially for QUALITY, and for locked routes, the results can be unexpected.  You can compensate for such other nodes choices for these parms by setting locked routes for such neighbor nodes, for which you can enhance or degrade their ranking in your 'N' list.

I have only one locked route, and that to another node on my LAN, N5IN-13, which I lock at 255.  I have no direct users on that node, all such users come thru N5IN-14.

I suggest using QUALITY=192 and MINQUAL=168 to start and adjust from there to get the result you want.

Ron, N5IN
