Hank,

Thanks for your reply.

No, I hadn't put into KISS mode. I'll try that with the KPS-3+ in a
little bit. Since my earlier message I switched over to use the
internal TNC in the Kenwood TM-D710 and have gotten a little further.
Again, I haven't done anything to place the TNC into KISS mode, so all
of the rest of this message may not mean much.

After starting up BPQTerminal I can see incoming packets:

^^KB0SRJ-10>BEACON:KB0SRJ-10 PPFMA RMS Packet Gateway. DIGI=PPFMA
NODE=KB0SRJ-7 DM78ou

^^cmd:

where the ^^ represents some unprintable character displayed as a
black square on my monitor.

Attempting a connect "CONNECT 1 KB0SRJ-10" shows packets being
transmitted and received (assumed from T and R after time stamp), but
the radio does not transmit.

I'm sure I can locate the command to place the TNC into KISS mode, but
don't now where to insert that command into the configuration process.

Hi Lee.

My software doesn't change the TNC state, so you need put it onto KISS mode with an appropriate baud rate, and save the settings, before starting the node.

I suspect the Kenwood is echoing the characters it sees, so it appears that the port is looped. Again, putting it into kiss mode should fix that.

I don't see how the node is seeing the beacon, though, as it should only respond to KISS packets.

Hi Lee,

IF you have the port in bpqcfg.txt configured as a 'KISS' port you will
need to force your tnc into the KISS mode for it to communicate with
BPQ. You can do this using a terminal program (link HyperTerm in
Windows) for most tncs prior to starting BPQ.

Thanks everyone - manually enabling KISS mode has me on my way - I'm
receiving and sending packets from the terminal now. In case anyone
else needs it, to enable KISS mode on the Kenwood (TASCO) internal TNC
the commands are KISS ON followed by RESTART.

I'm off to see what else I can learn...

Thanks again.

Hello all,

Hope the cooler fall weather has everyone thinking about fall/winter
radio/packet projects.

Been working with John (G8BPQ) to resolve some odd issues with BPQ32
and RMS Packet under load testing on 9.6k rf links.

WinLink sees little daily use in my area and we mainly wanted it for
additional capability/flexibility during training or real world
emergencies. So I wanted to test it with messages of some size to them
and the simplest of terminal setups. Figuring that the need to move
messages in the 20-100k size range would be very likely in a real
world emergency situation, I test with those sizes.

I was doing some testing with a simple terminal uploading mail to RMS
Packet via a BPQ32 switch. With small (sub 10k) messages all seemed
fine. Then I noticed that after sending in a few 100K messages things
were getting slower and slower. Problem would start about 180-200k in
and get worse. I could see that the switch was sending back RNR
packets as apparently RMS Packet was suddenly choking on the incoming
data.

After lots of testing and head scratching by myself and John (G8BPQ) I
finally stumbled upon the cause. Seems the antivirus software was
watching/scanning the log files as RMS Packet writes them to disk. As
the log file sizes increased...there was just enough brief I/O
contention there to cause the problem.

Setting the AV software's real time scanning to ignore those log files
solved the problem. On slower inputs or systems that don't see much
usage, this problem may not even show up depending on the AV software
used and it's particular real time scanning configuration.

Just something to keep in mind in case you see similar issues.

I Have been running it since.. And had no problems...

I ahve sent several messages of various size out and into the system

share what you did to get RMSPacket working with BPQ32? I have a
terminal session functioning so far, but am unable to get RMSPacket to
respond to connection requests.

Hi Lee..

While always try to watch what Mike does when he is in remotely… I do not always get to see everything with stuff going on here..

I know to get RMS and BPQ working with the standard BPQ you need to edit the bpwcfg.txt file to include the application RMS

Also you need a file called AGWtoBPQ.exe

And a special ini file in the BPQ32 directory called agwpe.ini

If you wish send me your bpqcfg.txt file… I will look at it…

Hi Mike,

I'm trying to get a basic system running so that I can test RMSPacket
with the Kenwood TM-D710 radio/TNC combo. John gave me a couple of
pointers via email and I'm functional at this basic level now. At some
point I would like to learn more and will come back here with more
questions (I'm sure).

Richard

The bpq telnet is only inbound not out bound, it is very simple to setup,

Open the BPQ telnetserver.cfg  enter the TCP Port

Edit the user list, save, exit and start the BPQ Telnet Server.exe, you can minimize, any changes in the BPQ Telnet Serever.CFG

Must restart BPQ Telnet.exe

USER=callsign,password,callsign  (lower case)

If the third parameter is not used your node call sign will be used, Example:

If I didn’t have the third parameter call sign and a user sings in,, connects to my BBS, sends a message to

A third party, your Node call will be used, this makes it difficult for the person that receives the message

To understand who the message was sent by.

I will send you my bpqcfg.txt but it doesn’t really have anything to do with the BPQ Telnet Server.

The hard wiring between two BPQ’S works fine (Null MODEM Cable) but again the Telnet can only be used

For incoming connections, and trying to setup forwarding from another station is very difficult as a delay

Is needed after the connection before the call sign and pass word is sent.

I think John G8BPQ has maybe worked out a way to telnet out bound, but John would have to fill us in on this.

Far easier to use a NETROM link between bpq32 and bpq408 if you ask me.

I used this one for years. It might need a little adjustement but used
this to hook bpq32 up to old 408 with a AK1A cluster and DRSI boards.

In your BPQ32 install folder there is a subdirectory titled ..\Docs.  Open a file named BPQ32_RS232_Cabling.htm with your browser for information in interconnecting two BPQ computers.  This applies to BPQ32 as well as to BPQ408 or BPQ409, you can even have one of each.  The interconnection can be stated as either KISS or NET/ROM.

As to telnet, there is a utility called BPQTelnetServer.exe as described in section 3.07 of BPQ32_Installation.htm, also found in your ..\Docs folder.  The configuation details are in BPQTelnetServer.cfg which you can tailor to your liking.  With BPQTelnetServer you can remotely connect to your BPQ32 node from any computer on the internet with a telnet client.  A simple telnet client can be run from a windows computer thus:  Start>Run...  And enter "telnet 'the ip address or URL of the bpq32 machine' 'port number'.  BPQTelnetServer reacts to incomming connection requests, it cannot originate a connection.

Far easier to use a NETROM link between bpq32 and bpq408 if you ask me.

I used this one for years. It might need a little adjustement but used
this to hook bpq32 up to old 408 with a AK1A cluster and DRSI boards.

10048 means the same port you used for the BPQ Telnet Server or a Port in BPQCFG.txt is already

in use, Example: if you chose port 80 for the BPQ Telnet, it is in conflict with your Web Browser

Knowing the port you choose for the BPQ Tenet mite help us narrow it down for you.

You are probably using the BPQ Telnet port in
some other application that you are running.

Check your BPQTelnetServer.cfg file to see what
TCPPORT= is set to.
Change it to a new port number and restart BPQ.
If that solves the error problem, you should be
able to telnet into the node using the new port
number.

If the error message re-appears, let us know.

This is a little off the groups main interest.
But given the new support development for RMS, I
thought I would ask my question here.

Does anyone know how to setup beaconing in RMS
to digi through an attached BPQ32 Node and out
through another Node ?

I am not exactly sure how the 'path' line should
read in the RMS BPQ port configuration.

In my case, I have a FlexNet Digi attached to
the BPQ32 Node and want to send the beacons out
on that system.

Subject: simple serial terminal port config needed

I have an ancient 486 with 8 megs of memory running BPQ (408 I think)
and a BBS - AA4RE to be specific.
Three of the four serial ports are configured in BPQ for KISS mode and
talk to three TNCS which are connected to three radios on different bands.

I want to configure the 4th serial port to communicate directly to the
BBS - a simple pass-through, with no computer protocol (no KISS or
HDLC or NETROM protocol). This would allow me to use a simple
terminal (laptop with hyperterm) to talk to the BBS when I'm in the
same room with it, instead of coming in through a radio and TNC.

Can anyone suggest whether this is possible, and if so how to
accomplish it?

thanks
Al

Hi Mark K2CAN
Thanks for the help I got it going. The telnet server is idle
I then go to run and type http://localhost :8010 and the telnet server
goes
To logging in and that it just sits there. What am I doing wrong?
I have the telnet port at 8010 is this right?

Hi Richard,

Try -

telnet://localhost:8010

Note the 'telnet'..

You were trying to use HTTP to access a telnet
server.

You need to be using a telnet client to access
the server.

Hi Al,

There is no way to use a terminal program to
directly access the Node without using any type
of protocol that I am aware of. John can correct
me about this if I am wrong.

However, you could setup a KISS port on the main
Node. Then, install FlexNet32 with a KISS port
and the Paxon terminal program on the laptop and
use the Paxon terminal program to access the
Node. I have this type of setup here and it
works fine. This assumes that you are running an
OS on the laptop that will support 32 bit programs.

I know there are a couple of other terminal
emulator programs out there that have KISS
porting available but their names escape me at
the moment.

I hope someone can help explain why I occassionaly get "Busy From" when
connecting to one of my nodes through another node. I'm using BPQ32
version 4.10.1.2 for both of these nodes which has worked flawlessly
for several months. I now occassionly get "Busy From" when I connect to
the one node from the other. This annoyance corrects itself, but the
problem keeps coming back. I wondered if the probelm might be caused
by weak signal strength, but I assume that if that was the case, I
would get a "Failure With" message. Interestingly, I never have trouble
connecting the other way, even when I'm getting "Busy From" from the
other direction.

Thanks,
Harmen, VE3EMA

Hi all..

another option is via agw and tsthwin or winpack with this config it also possible to work via unproto beacons of the bbs :)

another way is with tsthost and tfpcx or any other program that works with tfpcx under dos.

i have used here several configs and all work fine you just make a (fake) kissport for your prog and a kiss port in bpq and it should work.

Lately I have been plagued by European BPQ32 node sysops initiating links to my node unilaterally.

Sysops please note: axudp links are by agreement of the sysop at both ends of the route and the link does not work if it is only one way. The problem isn’t just one of common courtesy but of a real issue of having a number of nodes inducted into the node table that are unreachable.

I am not against new BPQ nodes, the more the better in fact, but please liaise with your intended partner node sysop before making a link.
