BUFORD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
July 15, 2001 + + + + + + + + + 8:30 & 11:00 a.m.

The Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

For Your Reflection
Firmly I believe and truly God is Three and God is One; and I next
acknowledge duly manhood taken by the Son.  And I trust and hope most fully
in that manhood crucified; and each thought and deed unruly do to death, for
He has died.  Simply to His grace and wholly light and life and strength
belong; and I love supremely, solely, Christ the holy, Christ the strong.
And I make this affirmation for the love of Christ alone:  holy Church is His
creation and His teachings are her own.  Honor, glory, power, and merit to
the god of earth and heaven, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - praise
forevermore be given!
[Cardinal John Henry Newman, 1801-1890]

WE KNOW SOMEWHERE THERE’S SOMEONE HIDING OUT IN OUR CONGREGATION!  Who?  A
pianist skilled enough to be accompanist for our soon-to-come super
children’s choirs!  We do need a volunteer accompanist to assist our new
director, Alexis Walsh, in the wonderful ministry we will soon begin.  PLEASE
don’t keep your talent hidden under a bushel (that’s Jesus’ description of
not using your gifts for His glory!); speak to David Arvold, Rachel Ficklin,
or Dr. Roark if YOU might be the person we’re seeking.

+ + + + +

We have several copies of a wonderful little book, "A Children's Guide to
Worship".  This book explains our Order of Worship in terms a young child can
understand, so the service becomes more meaningful to them.  If you have a
young child and would like to borrow one of these books, please call Jeannie
Lacy or the church office.

Coming This Fall (but in planning right now!)
This Fall we’ll have an adult study class of the book, The Christ-Haunted
Landscape, edited by Susan Ketchin, a collection of short stories and
excerpts from novels by Southern writers.  The book traces the influences of
Jesus Christ and the Christian faith on life in the South.  This class is for
mature adults who can handle controversy and will require some reading at
home prior to each class.  Books must be secured now, so please contact
Jeannie Lacy at the Church Office or Kathy Kubala (770/965-0406) if you are
interested.

July 8, 2001 + + + + + + + + + 8:30 11:00 a.m.
The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost
For Your Reflection
I need Your presence every passing hour.
What but Your grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who like Yourself my guide and strength can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me!
[Henry F. Lyte, 1793-1847]

Order of Worship

Prelude Jules Massenet

“Come, Christians, Join to Sing”

*Greeting, Prayer of Adoration, and the Lord’s Prayer (“sins”)

Welcome and Common Church Concerns

Call to Confession

Personal and Private Confession of Sin

Corporate Confession of Sin (prayed in unison)
In Your presence, O God, we confess our sins and the sins of the world. O
merciful Father, Who in Christ did look on our weakness more in pity than in
anger, and more in love than in pity, look thus on us. In our folly we have
ignored Your holy will and gone our own way and found no peace. We have been
anxious about many things and have neglected the things which truly belong
to our health and salvation. In an age taken up with technical know-how, we
have ignored the way of Jesus Christ and vastly underrated Your way of love,
the very bond of peace and all virtues. Lord, have mercy on us, for the sake
of Your own dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon
Choral Praise Response (sung by all) (Azmon)
He breaks the power of reigning sin, He sets the prisoner free.

From the pastor’s desk
by Dr. John Roark

Some things to consider during the lazy, hazy days of summer

“What to plant in your summer garden”
The best family garden includes rows and rows of squash, turnips, and
lettuce. Here’s how your family can plant that kind of garden:

Plant 3 rows of squash: 1) squash selfishness
2) squash criticism
3) squash envy

Plant 4 rows of turnips: 1) turn up for suppertime
2) turn up for fun time
3) turn up for work time
4) turn up for bedtime

Plant 5 rows of lettuce: 1) let us love one another
2) let us trust one another
3) let us praise one another
4) let us discipline one another
5) let us believe in one another

A juvenile judge in Denver recently gave some advice to the young people of
his community in response to the cry of many teenagers, “What can we do . . .
where can we go?”

“Go home,” says the judge. “hang the storm windows, paint the woodwork,
rake the leaves, mow the lawn, wash the car, learn to cook, scrub the floors,
repair the swing, build a boat, get a job, help the poor, study your
lessons-and when you are through and not too tired, read a good book.

“Your parents do not owe you entertainment. Your city or town does not owe
you any recreational facilities. The world does not owe you a living-you owe
the world something.

“You owe it your time and energy, so that no one will be at war or in poverty
or sick or lonely again.

“In plain, simple words . . . grow up! Quit being a cry baby. Get out of
your dream world and develop a backbone-not a wishbone-and start acting like
a man or a lady. You have no right to expect your parents to buy your every
whim and fancy, just because selfish ego instead of common sense dominates
your personality, thinking, and request. In heaven’s name . . . grow up . .
. and go home!”

+ + + + +

My great concern is not whether God is on our side; my great concern is to be
on God’s side, for God is always right.” [Abraham Lincoln, in reply to a
letter]

+ + + + +

“Doctrines are not God; they are only a kind of map. But that map is based
on the experience of hundreds of people who really were in touch with God.”

“Feelings come and go, and when they come a good use can be made of them;
they cannot be our regular spiritual diet.”

“You can’t get second things by putting them first; you can get second
things only by putting first things first.”
[all of the above quotes are from C. S. Lewis, noted 20th c. Christian]

+ + + + +

Evangelism is not simply a matter of bringing individuals to personal faith,
though of course that remains central to the whole enterprise. It is a
matter of confronting the world with the good, but deeply disturbing, news of
a different way of living . . .
the way of love.
{N. T. Wright, contemporary British New Testament scholar]

+ + + + +

No country can be truly happy while the walls may still be standing but the
morals are collapsing. {St. Augustine, 4th c. Christian thinker]

+ + + + +

Christian spirituality does not begin with our talking about our experience;
it begins with listening to God call us, heal us, forgive us.
(Eugene Peterson, contemporary Christian thinker and Presbyterian
minister/writer]

+ + + + +

Too many people tend to treat Jesus as something like a convenience
food-handy to have around in case of unexpected need.
(Margaret Clarkson]

+ + + + +

and, last of all, two of my favorite verses . . .

Holy Harmony
Thou shalt know Him when He comes
Not by any din of drums
Nor the manner of His airs
Nor by anything He wears
(Not His crown or His gown),
but His coming known shall be
by the holy harmony
which His presence
makes in thee. (Anonymous)

+ + + + +

Two verses from a great hymn about heaven,
as I contemplate those who have gone before us . . .

O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in
glory shine; yet all are one in thee, for all are Thine! Alleluia!
And when the first is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant
triumph song; and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong. Alleluia!
[Anglican Bishop William How, 1864]

The story of the mustard seed rebukes our cult of bigness. Our pride in huge

Jesus preferred a cult of smallness, for He stressed "a copy of cold water

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Offertory Anthem arr. Daniel Kallman
In Thee is gladness; gone is all sadness:  Jesus, Sunshine of my heart.  By
Thee are given the joys of heaven; Thou the only Savior art. To serve Thee
ever, forsake Thee never, we bow before Thee, love and adore Thee:  Alleluia!
In Him is gladness; gone is all sadness:  He Who once was dead is raised!
Jesus is giving life to the living; now and ever let Him be praised!
Wherefore the story, tell of His glory; with heart and voices all heaven
rejoices:  Alleluia!  Now is the story of Easter glory; sing with glad
voices; the world rejoices:  Alleluia!

Regarding the Trinity symbol inside: The most common representation has three
curving sides which are equal in size.  At each angle is a circle and in the
center is a larger circle.  The smaller circles represent Pater
(Father),Filius (Son) and Spiritus Sanctus (Holy Spirit).  On each side of
the curving bands are the words non est (is not)  and on the short diagonal
bands are the words est (is).  The proper reading is, "The Father is God, the
Son is God, and the Spirit is God."

The Festival of Pentecost - The Coming of the Holy Spirit

For Your Reflection
When the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, it wasn’t dynamite, it was a dynamo!
Dynamite makes a loud noise, kicks up a lot of dust, and it’s over.  A dynamo
is a continual source of power.  It builds and builds and builds, and the
power never stops flowing.

Welcome and Common Church Concerns

Call to Confession

Personal and Private Confession of Sin

Corporate Confession of Sin (prayed in unison)
Almighty God, You poured Your Spirit upon gathered disciples, creating
bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith.  We confess that we
hold back the force of Your Spirit among us.  Too often we do not listen for
Your Word of grace, speak the good news of Your love, or live as a people
made one in Christ
Have mercy on us, O God.  Transform our timid lives by the power of Your
Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be Your faithful people, doing
Your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Choral Praise Response (sung by all) (Azmon)
He breaks the power of reigning sin, He sets the prisoner free;
His blood can make the sinful clean, His blood availed for me.  Amen.

Text:  “Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every
nation under heaven.   And at this sound the multitude came together, and they
were bewildered, because each on heard them speaking in his own language.”
(Acts 2:5,6)

Offertory Anthem arr. Mark Hayes
All day, all night, angels watching over me, my Lord.  Day by day Your
mercies, Lord, attend me, bringing comfort to my anxious soul.  Day by day,
the blessings, Lord, You send me draw me nearer to my heavenly goal.  Love
divine, beyond all mortal measure, brings to naught the burdens of my quest.
Savior, lead me to the home I treasure, where at last I’ll find eternal rest.
Day by day, I know You will provide me strength to serve and wisdom to obey.
I will seek Your loving will to guide me o’er the paths I struggle day by
day. I will fear no evil of the morrow; I will trust in Your enduring grace.
Savior, help me bear life’s pain and sorrow till in glory I behold Your face.
Oh, what joy to know that You are near me when my burdens grow too great to
bear; oh, what joy to know that You will hear me when I come, O Lord, to You
in prayer.  Day by day, no matter what betide me, You will hold me ever in
Your hand.  Savior, with Your presence here to guide me, I will reach at last
the promised land.  Angels watching over me.

F.A.I.T.H. Friend Ministry
In order to welcome new members, we have a ministry called F.A.I.T.H. Friend
which means, "Friendship and Inspiration Through Hospitality".  We are most
grateful for those who have been F.A.I.T.H. FRIENDS  to the new members who
have joined this past year.  Thus, we are in real need of more F.A.I.T.H.
FRIENDS.  This is a very rewarding and enjoyable experience.  A F.A.I.T.H.
FRIEND serves for only 3-4 months and is asked to welcome the new member in
the following suggested ways:

1. Call on the phone and introduce yourself after the new member joins.
2.  Arrange to meet the new friend at church and possibly sit with them at
worship.
3. Invite the new member to a church activity, Sunday School, Choir, or
social activity.
4. If possible, share a meal together.

If you would be willing to be a F.A.I.T.H. FRIEND and participate in this
ministry, please sign up below and place in the offering plate or give to Bob
Ashworth, Parish Associate.

From the pastor’s desk
by Dr. John Roark

A Psalm for Whitsun (an old English name for Pentecost)

Born by the Holy Spirit’s breath, loosed from the law of sin and death;
now cleared in Christ from every claim
no judgment stands against our name.

In us the Spirit makes His home that we in Him may overcome;
Christ’s risen life, in all its powers, its all-prevailing strength, is ours.

Children, then, and heirs of God most high, we by His Spirit Father cry; that
Spirit with our spirit shares to frame and breathe our wordless prayers.

One is His love, His purpose one; to form the likeness of His Son
in all who, called and justified, shall reign in glory at His side.

Nor death nor life, nor powers unseen, nor height nor depth can come between;
we know through peril, pain and sword, the love of God in Christ our Lord.

[A poetic rendering of Romans 8, by Englishman Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.
1926), comprising a wonderful description of the meaning of the Holy Spirit
in our lives.]

Remember that MOST OF US ARE IN TOWN MOST OF THE TIME, so there’s no reason
for the supposed ‘summer slum’” we often speak of.  Each Sunday, same time
and same place, winter, spring, summer, and fall, we are here doing the same
things we always do, things you need to help keep your life on track.
Remember the Bible’s injunction,
‘Do not forsake the assembling of yourselves together as some do.”
(Hebrews 10:25)

Faith Friends
Dr. Ashworth and the Outreach Committee are in need of volunteers to be FAITH
friends.  This is a simple but rewarding way to be involved and serve your
church.  Each Faith friend initiates contact with an assigned new member and
makes sure to welcome them to our church and see that they are invited to be
involved in the church activities.  It does not take a lot of time but is
very valuable in making sure our new members feel welcome and included in our
church family.  Please call Rebecca Wilson, 678-482-5497, or Lydia Breer,
678-482-9358, if you can help us.

Thank you!
The Outreach Committee would like to thank those who contributed money and
donations to the Mother's Day baskets for the Battered Women's Shelter in our
area.  We were able to donate about 30 baskets filled with many personal care
items, plus some gift certificates.  And many thanks to those who helped to
put the baskets together and deliver them.  This was a fun project as well as
a service to others.  We will let you know of more things coming up.

Donnis Bowman was named Buford Presbyterian’s Woman of the Year.  Donnis was
recognized at the 11:00 service on May 20th and at the Women’s Spring
Celebration luncheon following the service.

Donnis was chosen for her longtime dedication to God, her church and family.
She has  worked tirelessly  to coordinate “We Gather Together” dinners; she
does many of the beautiful flower arrangements that we enjoy during church
services; she has served as an elder as well as coordinator for the
Presbytery meeting that was held at our church in 1999.  These are just a few
of the many reasons why Donnis Bowman is BPC’s Woman of the Year.

Congratulations to you, Donnis Bowman, and thanks for all you do for our
church!

Over 50 women of all ages attended the first annual Women’s Spring
Celebration held immediately following the 11:00 service on May 20th.  After
a delicious catered lunch, the women listened to an update about Presbyterian
Women from Amy Rogers, PW Enabler, then were entertained with a fashion show
from TL Consignments using BPC’s own fashion divas.  Mark your calendar now
for next year.  You won’t want to miss it!

+++++

All adults and senior high youth are invited to attend our summer class on
the new Presbyterian  “Study Catechism,” approved in 1997 by the church.  A
catechism is an ancient teaching method using questions and answers to help
us learn the basic facts of our faith.  Eight different teachers will lead
these interesting classes from June 3rd through the end of the summer.  Why
not make attendance something you do each week?  Everyone is welcome!

+++++

You will be interested to know that the gold-leaf rubbings now hanging in the
narthex are the gift of John Meincer, whose wife, Sara, created them in 1973
while they were living in England.  Sara, who died in March after a long
illness, took up this hobby to fill her time while John was at work.  Two
different long stays in England gave her opportunity to learn the art and
craft of rubbing bronze grave covers and bronze figures on massive church
doors. We are grateful for these beautiful items which formerly hung in their
home in Buford.

People & Places

BPC members are always on the go... traveling to the far reaches of the
globe.  As you travel this summer, please drop  a note in the box marked
“newsletter” in the church office so we can include it in our next edition
of “ChurchWise.” Thanks in advance!

Jim and Norma Carrier took a 10-day maiden voyage on Renaissance Cruise line
to the Carribean and Panama Canal.  After departing from Ft. Lauderdale, FL,
they stopped at Cancun and Cozumel Mexico, Grand Cayman, Cathanga, Colombia,
the Panama Canal and Costa Rica.  They especially enjoyed their tour of a
volcano in Costa Rica.

Sara Ann and Charles Pierson set sail on April 29th for a week aboard the
Norwegian Sky.  Their cruise took them up the inside passage beginning at
Seattle, WA, then Juneau, Skagway, Ketchican, Alaska and finally Victoria,
British Columbia.  Their most memorable day tours were the whale watching,
Sawyer and Mendenhall Glaciers.

Debbie Hall took a group of 24 people to Italy.  Traveling with Debbie from
the church were Rachel Ficklin, Betty Sue and Sabrina Taylor, Jeanette Kelly,
Katie Hall, Robert McCord, Susanne Walsh and regular visitors Vicky and
Carrie Wilson and Ann Waggoner.  The group visited Rome, Florence, Venice,
Pompeii, and Milan.  Next year Debbie is planning two trips:  Spain (April)

The Catechism is a concise but precise way to learn some of the basic facts
of the Christian faith. In former times children were required to memorize
questions and answers from the catechism, but in recent times this learning
method
has been neglected. No more! The PCUSA has a new Study Catechism, approved
in 1997, which we will study this summer in a combined class of all adults
and Senior High youth. Plan to be a part of this important learning
opportunity.

The church has a used Lanier Copier, Model #6725 for sale. If you are
interested, please stop by the church office.

We need several volunteers to sit at the PA controls in the balcony and

to cover this responsibility regularly. Please speak to Dr. Roark if you
would be interested in volunteering.

The Sixth Sunday of Easter

For Your Reflection
Like a river glorious is God's perfect peace; over all victorious, in its
bright increase;
perfect, yet still flowing fuller every day; perfect, yet still growing
deeper all the way.
Hidden in the hollow of His mighty hand, where no harm can follow, in His
strength we stand.
We may trust Him fully all for us to do; those who trust Him wholly find Him
wholly true.
Trusting in the Father, hearts are fully blessed, finding, as He promises,
perfect peace and rest.

Order of Worship

Prelude Everett Titcomb
“Meditation in E Major””
Striking of the Hour

Call to Worship

*Processional Hymn No. 17 (Kremser)
“We Praise Thee, O God, Our Redeemer”

*Greeting, Prayer of Adoration, and the Lord’s Prayer (“sins”)

Welcome and Common Church Concerns

Introduction of New Members (11:00)

Honoring This Year’s Graduates  (11:00)

Call to Confession

Personal and Private Confession of Sin

Corporate Confession of Sin (prayed in unison)
We confess to You and to one another, Lord, that we have not lived with
Your peace filling and sustaining us.  We have been anxious and troubled
about many things.  We have sought peace in the wrong places and then
wondered why we couldn’t find it.  It is Your peace we need, Lord, not some
superficial, temporary peace that never lasts.  Forgive us that we have
ignored Your Word and Your promise that You will give Your peace.
Make Your peace real to us.  Help us to be obedient to Your Word, which is
the condition for having real peace.  Keep us from following too much the
desires of our hearts and then finding that peace has eluded us.  Make us
hungry for Your  presence in and with and through us, calming our souls and
keeping us in the path of life You have prepared for all Your people.  We
pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Choral Praise Response (sung by all) (Azmon)
He breaks the power of reigning sin, He sets the prisoner free.
His blood can make the sinful clean; His blood availed for me.  Amen.

Cherub Choir “I Danced in the Morning”

Children’s Sermon

Sacrament of Holy Baptism (11:00):Trevor Robert Purser

The Preaching of the Word of God Dr. Roark
"THE CONDITIONS THAT MAKE FOR PEACE"
Text:  “If anyone loves Me, he will obey My teaching . . . He who does not
love Me
will not obey My teaching . . . Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.
I do not give to you as the world gives.”  (John 14:23a, 24a, 27a)

Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession

Offertory Anthem John Ferguson
He comes to us as One unknown, a breath unseen, unheard; as though within a
heart of stone or shriveled seed in darkness sown, a pulse of being stirred.
He comes when souls in silence lie and thoughts of day depart; half-seen upon
the inward eye, a falling star across the sky of night within the heart.  He
comes to us in sound of seas, the ocean’s fume and foam, yet small and still
upon the breeze, a wind that stirs the tops of trees, a voice to call us
home.  He comes in love as once He came by flesh and blood and birth; to bear
within our mortal frame a life, a death, a saving name, for every child of
earth.  He comes in truth when faith is grown, believed, obeyed, adored; the
Christ in all the Scriptures shown, as yet unseen, but not unknown, our
Savior and our Lord.

*The Doxology (at the presentation of gifts) Hymn No. 544
*Prayer of Dedication

*Statement of Faith:  A Biblical Affirmation
This is the good news which we received, in which we stand, and by which
we are saved: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that
He was buried, that He was raised on the third day; and that He appeared to
the women, to Peter, then to the twelve, and to many faithful witnesses.
We believe He is the Christ, the Son of the living God; He is the first
and the last, the beginning and the end; He is our Lord and our God. Amen.

*Recessional Hymn No. 417 (Webb)
“In Heavenly Love Abiding”

*The Charge and Benediction

 Choral Response (sung by all)
Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell everyone what He has done.
Let everyone who seeks the Lord rejoice and gladly bear His name.
He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joy, with shouts of
thanksgiving.  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

The Fifth Sunday of Easter

For Your Reflection
Of all the Spirit’s gifts to me, I pray that I may never cease to take and
treasure most these three: love, joy, and pace. He shows me love is at the
root of every gift sent from above, of every flower, of every fruit, that God
is love. He shows me that I possess a love no evil can destroy, however
great is my distress, that this is joy. Though all ahead is mystery, and
life itself is ours on lease, each day the Spirit says to me, “Go forth in
peace.” We got in peace, but made aware that in a needy world like this our
clearest purpose is to share love, joy, and peace.
[Fred Pratt Green, 1980]

Holy and merciful God, in Your presence we confess our sinfulness, our

Great Prayer of the Church

M: The Lord be with you.

with all Your faithful people of every time and place who forever sing this
hymn to proclaim the glory of Your name:
ALL: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might.
Heaven and earth are full of your glory: Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!
(The prayer continues)

M: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
ALL: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
(The prayer continues)

POST COMMUNION PRAYER (unison)
Gracious Lord, we give You thanks for the everlasting love with which You
have loved us, which sent You to us as a baby in the manger; which showed
itself to us as a Good Shepherd Who sought us in our lostness. You bought us
with Your own blood, and brought us back to the fold from which we had
wandered. We thank You for all the ways You assure us of Your love and care,
and especially for this holy meal which we have eaten at the Table You
prepared for us. Send us out to share this good news with other wanderers
who need Your loving, guiding hand in their lives too. We give thanks with
glad and joyful hearts. Amen.

Hi - We are experimenting with sending the Newsletter and the bulletin via
email. The bulletin from last Sunday is attached in .rtf format, which can
be opened by any wordprocessing program or in many cases, just by double
clicking it. Comments are welcome. We are starting with just 120 addresses.
Obviously, there are more out there. If you can send your email lists of BPC
acquaintences, it would speed up the process of getting everyone online. Be
sure to identify the owners of the email addresses. Anyone can unsubscribe
at anytime. You may subscribe using more than one email as well, ie, home
and work.

I will send the Newsletter BPChurchwise in a day or so. I'm hoping we can
fill out the list before then.

From the pastor's desk
by Dr. John Roark

Here's a little item I ran across that highlights the importance of
everyone's participation in the continuing task of Christian
nurture, i.e., passing on the Christian faith to others, especially
to those who come after us.

Congregational Responsibility

"Will you work with the children of the church?"

"No," he said at20. "I don't have any children in the church. The
parents should do it."

"You have to excuse me," she said at 30. "I spend all day every day
with preschoolers. They're driving me crazy. I need a vacation
from childcare on Sunday. Let someone else teach the children."

"I really can't," he said at 40. "Our children are finally away from
home. My wife and I want to enjoy travel and relaxation. We have
agreed to leave our weekends free for whatever we want to do. I'm
sure you can find somebody reliable to teach."

"It's out of the question," she said at 50. "I'm a grandmother, you
know, and small children already make me nervous. I really think
that teaching is the responsibility of those who have children in
Sunday School. Let them do it."

"What's the matter with the kids today?" they ask in bewilderment at
60. "The children today seem so wild and untaught. Why doesn't
somebody in the church do something about them?"

The Old Testament has a frightening verse: "After that there arose
another generation which did not know the Lord or what He had done
for Israel. And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight
of the Lord." (Judges 2:15) It couldn't be plainer than that,
right living depends on right teaching. The faith we hold must be
passed on from one generation to another in every way possible, both
directly (classes and books and teachers) and indirectly (by
example). To fail in either of these areas is to open the door for a
generation to grow up not knowing what they need to know most of all
in life, or to say it another way, not knowing the One Who makes life
decent and orderly and livable and what God intends it to be.

We're now seeking teachers and other workers for Vacation Bible
School (June 18-22), and soon we'll be seeking Sunday School teachers
and youth leaders for our Fall program. It's everybody's
responsibility to be involved in this critical part of the life of
our church. "Let somebody else do it" will not meet our needs or the
needs of our children and youth. When you get asked to help, say
Yes. If we overlook you and don't ask, then volunteer on your own.
Christian Education Co-coordinator Jeannie Lacy would love to hear
from you.

Most of you now have seen the drawings in the Narthex, showing what a
possible new building might look like on the outside and how it might
be laid out inside. These are only preliminary drawings, and no
decisions about anything have been made (other than that we badly
need more space for classes, a real Fellowship Hall, and additional
parking space. Soon we'll grade and gravel the area just behind the
present parking lots to gain about 30 parking spaces. (It won't be
paved until a new building is completed.) We also will complete the
risers in the balcony on which the pews already there will be
placed. We will continue discussions with the architect for a while
yet, and we solicit the input of every church member as we proceed.
If you have any ideas about such a new facility, what it must
include, what it might include, what "neat" or special items might be
included that you've seen elsewhere, please do not hesitate to pass
them on to the Planning Committee (Ron Hoover, Denver Taylor, Barbara
Espy, and the ministers). There will be information later about a
necessary Building Fund Campaign, which we'll have, probably early
next year. The excitement level seems very high; I hear no negative
comments at all; all I hear is "how much we need more space." If you
have other thoughts, don't hesitate to let someone on the committee
hear them.

It's the excitement level that seems permanent and the full
congregations on Sunday morning and the good spirit that prevails
here that keep me happy to be . . .

							 Your pastor,
John

Organization: Buford Presbyterian Church
from: The Story of the Presbytery of Atlanta (Talmadge)

For some time during 1890, Rev. J. L. King came to Buford once a
month and preached to some Presbyterians who lived there. On
Thursday, December 4, 1890, Rev. Dr. J. B. Mack, Synodical
Evangelist, came to Buford and preached at night. The result was
that a petition for organization of a Presbyterian Church at Buford
was sent up to the Presbytery of Atlanta signed... (12 names
here)..., all of whom except Mr. Pool were members of the
Presbyterian church... when the petition was presented, Dr. Mack was
instructed to organize the church on the third Sabbath in December
(the 21st).

On Friday night, December 19, Rev. J. L. King preached in Buford
Baptist church, which was kindly tendered us. After the sermon, Dr.
Mack announces the action of Presbytery, and on the next day Miss
Dovie Stewart, a baptized child of the covenant was received into the
communion of the church.

Dr. Mack preached Saturday night. On Sabbath morning, Mr. Adam Pool,
who was then 82 years old, was received into the church and baptized
at his home. Mrs. Lizzie Shelley was also received by letter. After
a sermon by Dr. Mack a Presbyterian Church of 14 members was
organized. (Sudderth, Sketch of Buford Church)

Hi - this is going to Bob + Stephanie Settle, Eleanor Thompson, Terri
Hendrix.  The attached file is in rich text format, which can be opened by
any word processor.  I will send a second mailing with the text directly in
it.  You will see that the formatting is lost using that method.  However,
not everyone is able to receive or open attachments, so it may be necessary
to send mailings both ways.

I envision that the bulletin could also be sent weekly this way, perhaps each
Sunday afternoon, along with various other reminders.

It is not possible to send to only part of a group.  However, it is easy to
set up various groups; i.e., Session, Wise+Wonderful, Parents, Parents
Morning Out, etc.

The group is set up as very restricted at the momment.  However, it could be
loosened up considerably, allowing several people or many to post messages.
Or a separate group could be set up for that sort of thing.

Anyone can unsubscribe at any time.  However, requests to join must be
approved.  Mostly, this allows some control on knowing whose address is
whose.  Any number of people can be set up as Moderators who can approve
messages, add members, etc.

The next step is to add addresses to the list!
