For those looking for BMHA members nearby, I've restructured the
roster to allow you to search by state.

Within a state, the roster is sorted by city.

To maintain an "appropriate" level of privacy, the roster only
displays name, city, callsign, and email address. However, it also
provides a link to QRZ.com, since that is "publicly available" FCC
data.

Check it out! Either follow the link from BMHA's home page, or go
direct at http://www.lafetra.com/bmha/Content/membership.asp

(In doing this, I used a several-months-out-of-date roster. I'll be
putting the current roster up within the next week or so. Also, I
noticed a minor bug that prevents displaying members who don't live
in a state -- for example our European friends. This will also be
fixed.)

Comments are always welcome.

I haven't gotten into bicycle mobile yet, maybe this summer...

While in college, I commuted back and forth to campus (maybe 4 miles one
way) on my bike. I put on the venerable rack over the back tire, and got a
huge milkcrate that strapped onto that. When I a huge milkcrate, I mean the
one that holds 6 gallons, not the usual 4. I used a small piece of wood,
with appropriate holes drilled in it, inbetween the rack and the crate, to
properly support the crate (otherwise it flexed too much under, say, a full
load of laundry).

Needless to say, this wasn't a suspension bike. Nor was it a particularly
light bike with the rack and all. But, due to the rack (and the board), I
could carry heavy loads back and forth to campus (for awhile I was doing
laundry once a week on campus), and it kept hot backpacks off my back, and
carried things really easily (just throw it in the back, like it was truck
or something).

Anyhow, once with such a contraption, it should be easy to attach away
whatever antenna, battery, or whatever you want. Just cushion things really
well.

I wouldn't want to go cross country on such a thing, but it does work well
for just going across town and short trips.

Hello to those in the bmha group. I have been lurking here for

Greetings BMHAers,

Everyone is invited to the Saturday UTC QSOs with the HFpack group.
HFpack is a large egroup for portable, pedestrian, and human-powered mobiles.
It also keeps a database of distance records for DX QSOs between
Human-Powered-Mobiles "/HPM" and Pedestrian Mobiles. There are many active
stations on the air, including various bicycle mobiles.

Hi all,

You may have noticed that you're receiving your eGroups messages from
Yahoo now. Yahoo and eGroups recently merged to form YahooGroups. All of
your settings are preserved, but you'll need to merge your accounts to
continue to use them. It can be a bit of a pain, but it only needs to done
once, unless Yahoo.com continues in it's plot to rule the world and changes
something else. ;-)

The new address for posting messages is BMHA@yahoogroups.com. The new

Hi,

That's right! It's a little late, but it's outta here. Hopefully,
everyone will see their copies within a few days. To get your copy earlier,
try an electronic subscription. In the future, I will send e-copies before
the p-copy (paper) goes to the printer. E-copies are also in color. They're
available in PDF or MS Word format (PDF is default). Please do not
distribute e-copies via e-Groups. I'd like to keep it's recipients to paying
club members.

One typo has been spotted: The upcoming HamVention will be held in

I haven't been lately (was out of biking for a while and then was sinking
too much money into bikes to fix my radio when it broke....being a single
parent forces you to make choices like that). I am now back into cycling
(commuting 100+ miles/wk) and have my radio fixed. Now I just need to
re-create the system I had before as I now have all the equipment except
for a source of 12V power on the bike (radio internal batteries are
shot) and to build another antenna (I have the materials, just haven't
found the time).

The radio stuff:
HTX-202 mounted on the stem and handlebar with a piece of
leather belt and
a couple of velcro straps
12V gel-cell on rack
homemade speaker mic (butchered from RS speaker mic...moved mic element to
boom made from coathanger wire and velcroed speaker portion to side of
helmet)
J-pole antenna made from 19" of PVC with a RS mag-mount CB antenna stinger
(39" long) mounted to the end at a 90 deg angle. I made a j-pole-type
matching network from open-wire ladderline and stuffed it inside the PVC
before capping both ends and clamping it to my rack. Worked as well as the
mobile radio in the SAG wagons on the rides I covered.

The Bikes:

My "main squeeze" (at least for now)
Jamis Axis road bike with nothing special except the rack which currently
holds the gel-cell for my lights and my panniers, plus reflectors
everywhere, 2 blinkies on the back, Brooks B-17, Cinelli anatomical bar,
Suntour bar-cons

Plus I'm building a "new" touring/commuting bike that can better handle
the stresses of loaded touring and commuting. Also so that I can stop
beating my road bike up on daily 20-mile commutes, and can strip it back
down to the lean, mean road machine that it's supposed to be:

GT Tequesta MTB with Tioga City Slicker tires, mostly Deore LX components
(whatever I could find used), Brooks B-17, Cyclocross drop bars (widest I
could find with the ergo bend), bar-end shifters, 12V lighting system (
http://www.bicyclelights.com ), Dynohub with voltage-doubler/regulator for
charging the battery (system in planning), fenders, full racks etc, ham
radio equipment.

I renamed the "subject" in my response so your discussion doesn't get
inadvertently deleted by those that might think your message is just another
"test" message. Perhaps others will respond with the same subject line to
keep the this discussion organized. Most of us actually operate the ham
radios FROM our bicycles while riding. Hearing, "You're on a bicycle?" is
half the fun! :-) Sometimes I jump on the bike just to talk on the radio
since I don't have a rig at home. I wouldn't mind getting MFJ's 6m SSB QRP
rig for the "campground" stuff. Visit my website for a full write up on my
bicycle mobile station. I've also posted photos of it on the eGroups site.

Hi,

List members may now upload files to BMHA@eGroups.com. All I ask is
that you create folders by callsign and keep your files in your folders. My
folder is already setup as an example. Also, please try to keep your files
small. I'm not imposing size restrictions. But please avoid posting
full-screen images that take forever to download and hog disk space. Take a
look at mine... they're half-screen sized jpegs and, consequently, relatively
small. Also, copyrighted material (professional photos and programs) will be
deleted immediately. Thanks for your cooperation.

Enjoy the new feature,

Hi,

I was administratively successful at changing our eGroups name to
BMHA. This message will tell us if everyone is getting the messages
properly under the new name.

Since there are less than 30 of us, feel free to respond to this
message with a quick test. I'll go first. I'll return to the board
on Monday and delete all of the little test messages in order to
reduce clutter in the archive. I'm sure everyone will make the
change okay since most of us are signed up for individual e-mails.
I'm not sure how the digest-guys will fair in this change. Please be
patient if it seems you are getting bombarded with "test" messages.
There are only 29 of us and it should stop soon.

Thanks for your patience,

Scott

Hi! A friend and I put on a competitive trail ride in July at Caesar
Creek State Park in Waynesville OH. I'm looking for a ham group to
work the road crossings, which will make things safer for our riders and
much easier on management. I noticed in the membership roster that
there are a number of members from the Dayton and Cincinnati areas and
thought you might be interested. I am also co-managing a ride in
September near Bainbridge OH at Pike Lake State Forest and would love a
group for that as well if it is possible. The hills there may make
radio communications difficult.
If anyone is interested or wants more info, please email me privately
since I'll be unsubscribing once this posts. thanks!

I have two announcements that may be of interest to bicycle mobile qrp
operators:

# 1. The 2001 QRPedal-expedition to Dayton!

A small international contingent of QRPedalers are planning to cycle
from Canada to Dayton FDIM/Hamvention in May 2001. Starting on the
saturday or sunday before Dayton, we will cycle across part of Southern
Ontario, invade the US via the Sunday evening Lake Erie ferry
(Kingsville > Sandusky) and arrive in Dayton QRP-central the day before
FDIM (for steak and honey-bourbon salmon at the Lone Star wednesday
evening!)
I will post to the list with more information, as the route and other
details take shape. We will certainly hope to have the chance to work
many of you from the road, or from the evening campsite, or even from
the ferry! We could accommodate several more keen riders, if anyone is
interested.

# 2. Email reflector for Bicycle Mobile Hams!

BMHA now has an eGroups discussion list, so you should certainly
subscribe if you are interested in bicycle mobiling. Info can be found
at:

Congratulations! You can start with something as simple as an HT, an
improved antenna for the HT (1/2-wave is best), and a PTT boom mic. Then
work your way up as interest, necessity, and money allows. Visit my ham
radio page at

http://members.aol.com/ke4wmf/HamRadio.html

Go to the bottom of the page and you'll see two articles about my

Hi, I am new to this reflector and Amateur radio. I have been a ham 18 months
now. My main interest is morse code and 10 meters. I am sending in my dues to
BMHA this week to become a member. I think it would be very unique to have a QSO
on a bicycle, especially to the other station receiving, I bet it raises many
eyebrows. Can I use a vertical antenna similar to a hamstick on a bicycle for hf
(10 meters) use, will this put out good? This is all new to me, so I might have
a few questions in the future which I guess is what this reflector is all about.

Many BMHA members put an antenna on a back ("luggage") rack. I
don't -- mine is up front where I can't kick it mounting the bike.

But a long antenna is hard to keep steady. I've found what I
consider the "perfect" solution.

The bottom of my antenna is at the base of a handlebar bag (mine is
the type which has bungee-type cords down to the front axle, but this
may be overkill). Then I've taken a piece of twine and stretched it
from one brake hood to the other (right were the brake cable comes
out the top). This is out-of-the-way and doesn't impede my hand
placement at all.

I've a small loop in the twine about 4 inches in from the left brake
hood. You've guessed it -- my antenna projects through this loop.

Very secure. Very tolerant of bumps. Doesn't strain any connectors
anywhere. I've used this setup for darn near a decade with splendid
results.

I've some experience with electronic forums such as this one.

They start of slow, but with participation, can really skyrocket.

Please participate and add your thoughts. Your 'simple solution' can
be the answer which some other bicycling ham is desperately seeking.
(See my next post about stringing an antenna on your bicycle).

As always, please also go to our website at
http://www.LaFetra.com/BMHA and send me any feedback you have.

Hi,

I finally got the list up and going. I'm working on getting the
name changed to BMHA. I was close, but a judgement error and
subsequent technical difficulty are the only hold-up. I'll let
everyone know when the name has successfully changed.

The new Newsletter is at the printer as I type. It will
announce the location of this discussion list. In the meantime,
please invite as many BMHA'rs as you can. Please use the Invite
option, not the one that signs them up automatically.

      Let the fun begin!
