hi, this is just my feeling, so feel happy to disagree, but I think its to do with England being really cold in winter and the fat supposedly giving the birds...
I believe Fat or in most cases Lard is added in the mix to provide protien to help the birds fuel their little bodies, as it is a quick acting source of energy...
