With the new updater you start it plug in the scanner and if needed click on the
find scanner and it should work. What version of Windows are you using?

The new updater handles all of that..  completely new arrangement...
you have to uninstall your old updater version...

& works great...

I noticed a few users mentioning they simple plugged in their serial cable and
ran the firmware updater
without removing batteries, running the radio on AC adapter, and booting the
radio without the HOLD + 6 key depressed.
The firmware updater has a window that pops up mentioning having to do the above
sequence for flashing the firmware.

Am I missing something here? I'm asking this for the next time a firmware rev.
is released...

Thanks,

-Lance

This new updater makes this process so easy. The latest update is certainly an
improvement on P25 audio.

Hi all, is anyone in NC? I am trying to figure out how to set up my scanner for
Viper and Mecklenburg county mostly. I also want to add various parts of the
rest of the state, so as I travel I can scan the area.

Also trying to figure up the GPS setup for everything. I'm new to this, the p25
stuff and GPS setup. Interesting to try to figure out, I must say

Grab the older version of the Firmware and Updater in the files here and you

I know a lot of people have been saying how smooth the firmware update for the
BCD396XT went, but has anyone had issues with it? Mine is working fine until I
click the button to auto-find the COM port and then it can't detect a scanner. I
am using the provided Uniden serial cable with a serial-to-USB adapter. What
puzzles me most is that the same set up for connecting my scanner to my pc has
worked many times when programming my scanner with FreeScan. I have also tried
this on 2 different computers. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks!!

Suggest that you use Device Manager to find the port used by the USB cable
and then manually set the Comm Port in V-UP3.
I used the standard serial cable with no problems. USB communications with
many products seems to be a hit or miss affair involving the proper
installation of drivers and phase of the moon..

Also, make sure freescan is not running or loaded when run the updater

Yes, I have tried using the COM port that FreeScan uses and I have also manually
tried all of the other available COM ports showing up in the Uniden update

Hello all.
Just purchased the 396XT scanner and liking it very much. Comming from a Radio
Shack and GRE I am liking what I am hearing moreso then the 2 previous model's I
have owned.
My question is: when a signal either P25 or analog comes thru while scanning is
there a way I can have the backlight turn on, and stay on until the signal
disappears? I see you can set the delay time, set the backlight for on all the
time, and squelch,(P25 does not use squelch) and keyboard, etc. Not seeing
anything where I can have the backlight come on in all modes and stay on until
the signal drops. I was able to do this in my previous Radio Shack and GRE hand
helds, but through the software only...not via menu within the scanner.
Anyone have an idea if this is possible with this model?
Thank you
Mike

I don't think it is possible, but I leave my BL on all the time.

Also, with squelch, of course P25 uses squelch - just in a different way
than conventional radio. If it helps, think of 'squelch' to be 'when the
speaker makes noise' or 'when the audio amp is active' if you are
technically inclined. :-)

go to SET MODE, push the knob inward/down. Now you can scroll thru the options

Yes. Easiest way is use software like FreeScan and you can set different colors
for different channels and TGID's too

You can't make it stay on until the signal drops. It times out eventually when
you have it set to 'Squelch'

Hello,

Yes I have my backlight set to squelch, but when a P25 signal comes through the
backlight is not lit. Also when the backlight does come on it only stays on for
a short period of time, even while the station is still talking.
But there is no option that I see within the scanner to active backlight on
signal and stay lit until signal drops out. The backlight stays on for a short
period regardless if the station is still on the air.
I am not seeing in the software where you can select backlight when signal is
present, and stay lit until the scanner resumes scanning.
I was able to specify this in my previous GRE andRadio Shack Digi/Trunking
handhelds.

Any ideas? I have also downloaded Freescan and did not see anything different
setting then whats within the scanner itself.

Anyone?
Thanks
Mike

Overall I'm impressed with the improvement that the latest firmware
provides. It is a noticable improvement when the unit is used in fixed
locations and makes some improvement in mobile situations. I find on one
local system that there are still locations where the scanner will not
decode the digital bitstream, this may be unique to this particular system.

I'm hoping that Uniden will QUICKLY release this firmware for the 996XT.

(PLEASE {PLEASE} PLEASE)

Are you sure the P25 transmission is not triggering the backlight? Is it
possible that you are monitoring a trunked system and it's simply that
the replies are not triggering it?

It's possible your adapter went bad. Is there someone
else in your area you can borrow an adapter from to try?

That's what I was wondering. I can't think of anyone that would have one, so I
may just order one online for $10. We'll see. Thanks for the input.

Joe-

I was just thinking, like I said, this serial adapter has always worked when I
have been working with FreeScan. Could this somehow be different and I should
get another one? Or is that a waste of time/money?
Thanks!

Any chance that that would help?

Dan Simon wrote:

I didn't see a mention what OS your are running and a few other details that
would help
determine if this is your problem or not.

However, many people have been experiencing problems with Windows 7 and cheap
Chinese
knockoffs of the Prolific USB serial adapter that you see cheaply available for
$10 and less.

A somewhat recent update to the Prolific driver which Windows Update will try to
install attempts to detect the non-genuine chips and prevent them from working.
This causes a set the situation a cable setup that previously worked is no
longer
recognized and the com port goes away.

Here's one guide to dealing with Prolific drivers:
http://uv5r.99k.org/UV5R-Drivers.html

(for more google for "prolific error 10 windows 7)

NOTE: If you are going to go through the exercise of buying another USB to
serial cable,
I strongly suggest that you spend more than $10 and find one that is based on
the
FTDI USB serial chip. FTDI will be in the description of the cable from most
reputable places. It will cost $15-25 instead of $10 or less, but you will
spend
a lot less time doing trial an error with drivers. The better cables also tend
to have better voltage level converters which tends to make things more
reliable.

Hope this helps,
