I was at Radio Shack, and noticed they had a Enercell Car Power Adapter on
clearance for $4.97.  Part #273-368.
It's rated at 6VDC@1000ma.  I also got a right angle Adaptaplug Tip "B" series.
 It's specs are:

4.00mm O.D.
1.7mm I.D.

When you buy the Car Power adapter, you get an Adaptaplug tip included in the
price.  Part # 273-335
That's saved $6.95.  So this made the whole setup real attractive for $5.38
total.

I noticed when I seated the tip plug into the radio there is a slight bit of
play, compared to the plug that comes
furnished with the Uniden AC Adapter...

I haven't check the specs on the Uniden plug, but this made me wonder if the
plug is unique...

My scanner has been working just great untill last monday, It was scanning, and
working as normal and all of a sudden it shut off...Hmmmm I thought maybe the
batteries were down so I turned it back on, pushed the volume knob, and it
showed 3.8 volts, no problem, so I left it on, and in a few minutes poof, it
went off again...So, I took off the battery cover, and removed the batteries,
checked the contact points, (all was well) and replaced the batteries. Turned
the scanner back on and all was well ..it worked for about 10 min. and then went
Off again. Once again I turned the scanner back on, and I get this wierd static,
and very loe volume like the antenna is not working properly, and then Poof off
it goes again. Hmm so back on it goes, and now i'm getting what looks like a bar
code across the screen, it blinks and then a streight line across the middle of
the screen, and poof it's off again...It does this on batteries, or the car
charger. The Batteries are freshly charged, and th scanner has never been
dropped or dammaged.

Any one have any Ideas? or has anyone else had this problem???

I don't know what the technical cause would be, but it is almost certainly an
issue requiring repair.

I can't see how a "hosed" system would cause that. It could be a bad
cell, but I don't know if "TNTM" (he didn't post his name) tried the
charger with or without the cells.

It definitely sounds like something is wrong in the power system.

If I had to make an educated guess, I might even guess the CPU. That
brings up an interesting possibility: Do you have the latest firmware?
If not, try uploading the latest. It's remotely possible it could be
corrupted firmware.

If you go to the Uniden web site under support you can fill out a repair form to
print and include with the scanner when you return it. Their flat repair rate
is $49.50 plus an additional $10.00 for return shipping.

I recently returned a BC898T to them to have the damaged front panel/case
replaced. I shipped it to them via UPS. They return by USPS. At one time the
front panel was available thru their parts dept., but is no longer available.
However, it was available thru their repair dept. It took about 3 weeks total
time from the day I shipped the unit to them until I got it back.

Looks like the slight play in the way the plug feels once seated in the radio is
due to the  EIAJ TYPE-II jack has an O.D. of 4.4mm, while the plug (Adaptaplug
"B") from Radio Shack is spec'd at 4.0mm, so 4 tenths of a millimeter in
difference...
Anyone know where I can source the plugs Uniden uses?
Thanks,

Ok, I'm still having trouble getting reliable decodes on P25 even when I'm in
close range of the transmitter. The transmissions break up frequently no matter
the antenna.

But, here's another interesting thing I noticed. If I turn on the radio
normally, I have trouble with the P25 decoding. If I turn it on using
Hold+power (which activates the hidden P25 menu items), decoding improves a bit.
Was that supposed to be a feature of the updated firmware or is it supposed to
use the hidden menu settings at all times regardless of power up mode?

Well, I bought a DC regulator, so I could run my scanner. None of
the plugs available will fit the 396XT. :(

Also try a new set of batteries just to rule them out as well. I hope you
get it fixed and don't have to send it in for repair. Lots of good tips
given, try those tips first and see what happens. Hopefully you can narrow
it down to something simple.

Take care,

Mode as in modulation or something else?

The systems are programmed to use NFM Digital audio only (not auto). I suppose
I could try to use the wider FM mode.

If you don't mind cutting the cord and splicing a whole new connector on there
then go to Digikey or Mouser. They have the proper sized barrel connector in
both straight and right angle configurations.

I made my own 12 volt adapter and bought a cord from Digikey (Mouser has the
same ones, too) that had a molded, right angle connector on the end. Works
fine, no loose connections.

"Illegal voltage" will also be displayed if the voltage is too low (I think it
appears around 5.0 V, it happens a lot when I power from an external battery
that has run low.)

Alex,
I was thinking of doing that.  Radio Shack's connector series has a loose spec
from what I read on Wikipedia.
Do you have part numbers from mouser and digikey?  That would be helpful.
Thanks again,

I don't have the part numbers but both sites have good search engines that
filter by specification so you'll be able to find the parts pretty easily.

Both Digikey and Mouser sell this configuration which is what I purchased. It's
a molded connector with bare leads on the other end. The wire is somewhere
between 6 and 10 feet long so you have plenty of options. When you use the
catalog search features of either site you should come across them pretty
quickly.

Digikey's search is under the Product Index where you then select the product
category and subcategory -- in this case Connectors, Barrel - Power should get
you started and will eventually show you the filter list. Mouser's search
starts by selecting the large categories on their main page -- I think
"Connectors" and then "DC Power Connectors" will give you bare connectors while
"Wire and Cable" and then "Cable Assemblies" will get you the molded connectors
with wire and the filter list, too.

Details GRE Official Announcement 10/23/2012

October 23, 2012

To our valued Dealers and Customers,

Due to circumstances beyond its control, General Research of Electronics
of Japan (GRE)
is temporarily not able to manufacture the GRECOM and Radio Shack
branded radio scanners.

The Chinese Government’s plan to redevelop the area where the GRE
factory had been in
operation for over ten years finally forced its closure. Anticipating
this eventuality,
GRE was in the process of building a new factory but unfortunately the
cost of raw materials,
labor and increased taxes created a heavy financial investment burden
that could not be
effectively recovered.

GRE America continues to market, support and service the GRECOM branded
scanners and is
contractually committed to keep the Library Database updated and
current. GRE America
will continue to market, service and support Alinco’s radio
products without any interruption.

We sincerely apologize for this unfortunate turn of events. GRE is
proceeding to establish
a contract with a new factory and believes it will be able to restart
the manufacturing in
the near future.

For continued sales, service and support, please contact the GRE America
office.

Raj Gounder
Director of sales
GRE America, Inc.

My Jabra A210 Bluetooth adapter no longer works (battery , etc. ) and is no
longer available nor is the Jabra A120S.
Any suggestion for a replacement adapter with either a 2.5 or 3.5 mm plug.
I use this with Bluetooth ear piece when in a crowd.

I noticed some cheap BT adapters on eBay earlier this week. I didn't
look too hard since I am currently not in need of any, but I noticed it
had the correct size plug for the 396 (3.5mm).

Not as cheap as others, but the BTT005 looks pretty small - maybe half
the size of the A120S (about the same size, but half as thin). Looks to
be in the $25-35 shipped range on eBay.

I haven't tried these, so I can't say how well they work, but it's got
the right plug on it.

There are other units that are around $10 shipped, but they look larger.
Still, that should work. for those, search on the terms "bluetooth
adapter 3.5 -usb" (minus the quotes, of course).
