Paul,

Thanks you and Uniden for providing the Firmware update for both the BCD396XT
and BCD996XT scanners!

Just applied the update to three scanners, all smooth sailing!

I just upgraded my 396XT and 996XT as well and it was easy-peasy, lemon squeezy.

Thanks, UPman and Uniden.

The firmware is still at version 1. There hasn't
been a major update for the XT series yet.

You don't need a Key Jerry, just click in ok and carry on per instructions..let
it run untill finnished. you may need to have someone else let you know when it
has finished then you can unplug it. I don't remember getting any tone when it
was done(which would have been nice in your case). Good luck

I archived the update files I had in the uniden folder for the bct396t then put
the scanner in loader mode (6+lockout_no battery) and power up........then it
loaded OK.
Does this same firmware work in a bct396T as well?

It did improve reception on a cqpsk system 20 miles south.
The system is a 2 site simulcast with about a 2 hz frequency offset between the
two sites. This is most evident when listening in analog AM wide, to the
control channel. A 4.8khz tone modulated by the site to site freq difference
(about 2-3 hz). That means a receiver AGC would have to track that extra AM
modulation to keep the decoder in an optimal range. Not sure what the bandwidth
of that tracking is but 2 hz is really hard for it to track.
So the contol channel "wobulates" at 2 hz and the voices chop at about 2 hz from
the data errors. I think I will contact the county down there and tell them they
need to set the frequency between the two sites to zero beat each other - it
would probably improve the performance for them too.

The Cedar Rapids system is C4fm not cqpsk so it doesnt suffer as much from the
frequency error it has between its two site simulcast. Thats something Motorola
and Harris dont tell you about on these simulcast systems, that if the frequency
is too far apart on each site then they interfere with themselves. 20 miles out
the two sites are the same level and hetrodyne as expected. They are not using a
GPS time base which would put them within a tiny fraction of a hz from each
other.

Cool doc on P25 simulcast sites:

I'll try again, I have a bct396t which uses the same folder, will zip everything
there up and reinstall it. It asked for a key - major update it said.

You do not need a key as the instruction state in step 3, just click ok
   and the upgrade should proceed.

   http://info.uniden.com/UnidenMan4/BCD396XTFirmwareUpdate
also in the Yahoo groups files section under Firmware
   ================================================
   Installation Steps

Here is what you need to do to apply the 1.10.00 update.

   1. Download the update by clicking BCD396XT_V1_10_00.zip and download
the latest version of BC_VUP (the firmware update tool) by clicking
   BC_VUP_v2.0.0.7.zip.

   2. Unzip both of the files you downloaded in Step 1 to your desktop.
Then run BC_VUP_v2.0.0.7.exe to install the firmware updater. (If you
previously installed a version of BC_VUP, be sure you delete the old
install files before reinstalling. These files are in a "BCSS" directory.)

   3. Run the BC_VUP application you installed in Step 2. Follow all
on-screen instructions. You do not need to enter a registration key.
When prompted, select the BCD396XT_V1_10_00.scn file you unzipped in
   Step 2.

I just upgraded my 396XT and 996XT as well and it was easy-peasy, lemon
squeezy.

Thanks, UPman and Uniden.

It doesn't need the key unless you check
the Major Update box. Don't check that box.

I know it's not basic procedure for updating the 396XT firmware but I got
stuck at my office today and didn't have the power cable, I put 3 brand new
doubles A's in the radio and held down L/O and 6 while I powered it on using
the power button and the radio updated just fine so while the preferred and
recommended way to update it is to insert the power cable while holding
those keys my method seemed to work as well. Just wanted to let others know
that there appears to be another option for the updating process if you do
not have a power cable when you have to update the radio.

Have you done the following steps to put the in mode for firmware
upgrade? These step need to be repeated even if the backlight is already
on to restart the update.

- turned the scanner off
- removed the batteries
- removed the power cord
- hold down L/O and 6 then plug power cord back in

http://info.uniden.com/UnidenMan4/BCD396XTFirmwareUpdate
============================================================
Update Troubleshooting

Follow these tips to troubleshoot any update problem you encounter: *
When prompted, be sure to turn off the scanner, remove the batteries,
and hold down both the L/O and 6 buttons while plugging in the AC
adapter. The backlight should come on and remain on until the end of the
update.

If an error occurs during the update, simply repeat all steps,
including removing power, holding down L/O and 6, and plugging in AC
power. Even if the backlight is already on, you need to repeat this step
if you restart the update.
Almost all update error messages or faults that result in the
scanner powering up with a blank display the the backlight on after the
update are caused by:
Incorrect COM port selection: Be sure you have selected the COM
port that the scanner is plugged into.
COM port software conflicts: No other software can be running
that uses the COM port. Be sure to close any running scanner control
software. Also, if you have ever used a PDA with this PC, there is
probably synchronization software running all the time that takes over
the COM port. You can usually stop that software by right-clicking on
its icon in the lower right side of your PC screen, then selecting
"Quit" or "Exit."

If your PC does not have a COM port, you can use a USB-->RS232
adapter. Uniden sells such an adapter specifically for this scanner
(Model USB-1). Or, you can use many other adapters that are available at
computer retailers. Note that some adapters do not work, or require
updated drivers. Uniden only supports the USB-1.
Interruption during the update.
For all of the above conditions, you can restore normal scanner
operation only by successfully applying the update. Restart the update
from the beginning and ensure that you've followed all steps correctly.

I down-loaded and installed the 396XT software update on Friday. Used a KeySpan
(Triplite) USB/Serial adapter to connect to the 396XT, which I also used with
several amateur transceivers.

Decoding of the trunked Omaha, NE P25 system is defiantly better but the most
impressive is consistent decoding of a non-trunked VHF P25 channel whose
transmitter is located about 60 miles NE line-of-site. P25 is being decoded
with when no signal strength is indicated (no bars) on the display. Antenna is
a Diamond RH77CA w/SMA adapter mounted on the scanner.

Just a note of caution using this method. You should only attempt this
using known good cells and cells that are well charged. If the cells go
low during the update, 'bad things' can happen.

A wise man (ok, movie character engineer) once said: "The more they
overhaul the plumbing the easier it is to stop up the pipes".

Translation: The more complex Windows gets the more people who will have
issues with their particular configuration.

No problem I'm just glad everyone knows what I was trying to say now. Under
most circumstances I would never use that method but my buddy at work HAD to
have it updated Friday and all I brought was my usb cable and laptop he
forgot his power cable. While I know it is not the best way to achieve the
firmware update it ended up working for me in the end and just wanted to
share the info just in case anybody finds themselves in a situation like I
did.

Have a good day guys,

Bob

Just a note of caution using this method. You should only attempt this

using known good cells and cells that are well charged. If the cells go

low during the update, 'bad things' can happen.
