That is basically how it works. I do see mine pause very briefly on an encrypted
talkgroup and then proceed with scanning. The squelch does not open during this
pause, the only way you would know it is if you are looking at the display.

Occasionally the scanner will pause for longer periods of time and, if I notice
this, I usually just temporarily lock out that talkgroup. Not sure why it does
that.

Is the BC396xt capable of squelching only encrypted transmissions? For instance,
I program all channels that are knowingly encrypted, but I've noticed that
frequently those channels go red, and are in the clear, and I only want the
radio to unsquelch if there is an open digital channel, instead of getting
digital barfs. The rest of the time I would want the radio to ignore stopping on
digitally encrypted traffic.

Hi,

Too bad unlike the 396T we have to amplify the output on the 396XT and I
assume the Home Patrol. I like the fact that with the 396T I don't have to
plug the speaker into a power source.

I'm trying to remember if in previous models there were two jacks. I guess,
Uniden is afraid of getting sued if someone blows their eardrums out with an
earphone.

It's another thing we have to plug in now, I wish Uniden could go back to
the way it was, where we had good volume using a non amplified speaker.

Two choices.

1) stereo to mono adaptor.
2) cut mono plug off and replace with stereo plug.

If you run the SMA to BNC adapter and then ground the outside sleeve of the
audio plug to the adapter, if will put the audio amp into full output mode...

There are wiring mods you can do to the radio to bypass headphone mode, however
this may void your warranty.

Perhaps in the future we will see a setting for this in the "settings menu".

I thought i read somewhere when u use the wire from the BNC to the external
speaker plug on a 396XT and short out the resistor it may cause a problem with
the audio amp....I did do that trick on my 396T before i sold it and its OK on
the GRE/RS products but has anyone actually used this method on a 396XT
safely???...TY

Has anyone found a source of the Uniden 4-pin connectors used on the cable? I
would like to repair one cable and make up a couple of special cables and all I
need are a few of the Uniden 4-pin connectors that plug into the scanner. I
found this site that identifies the connector as the same used among several
models of cameras but after searching on these various models I am not able to
convince myself it is the same connector.

Thanks in advance for any help in finding these ocnnectors.

I did some searching a few months ago because I want to make a cable
to connect to a GPS. I found a site that identifies it as a standard
"4 pin mini USB" I was able to pick a cable that had that connector
at one end at The Source (here in Canada) for $2 clearance price. It
fits the scanner perfectly, but I haven't had a chance to change the
other end of it to see how well it works.

The page I found is

Gday I only want to listen to a few TGID's on a busy P25 site.

Is there any way to enable only those TGID's that I want to listen to without
having to L/O each of the unwanted ones as they transmit? It takes a lot of time
and button pressing to weed out the unwanted ones.

Or, is there a way to enable only the ones I want to hear?

I think I crashed my 396XT by having so many lockouts in memory. I had to reset
it and start again.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks...

Create a group with in your system and program in only the TGs you want to
hear. Then only scan that group. Make sure your radio is in ID Scan not ID
Search.

Program only the channels you want to scan into a Channel Group and be sure the
scanner is in ID SCAN (not ID SEARCH) mode.

Also, assign a Group Quick Key (GQK) to that group. It makes it much easier
when Quick Keys are used. Both
System Quick Keys ( SQK) and Group Quick Keys.

Group QuickKeys are numbers 1-9 and 0.
System/Site QuickKeys are number 0-99.

As others have emphasized, make sure you are "Scan" and not "Search".

only 10 GQKs are available for assignment.

You can assign more than one Group to the same GQK. Or, you can use some
Groups that you always want to scan, and not assign them a GQK. Or, you
can assign TGs you know, but don't want to scan to a Group, lock out
that Group then use ID SEARCH to find new TGIDs.

That's one of the nice things about the DMA scanners. You can set them
up so many ways.

All this said, I could use at least 20 GQKs, too.

I knew of the work around, still it's just not the same as having 20 GQKs.
If there is ever another Firmware update, I hope 10 more GQKs per system
would be added...............
it only makes more sense to have the same amount of GQKs as Groups that are
available.
Say using Function/.no/xx(11 to 20) as the key press procedure. Just gives
more flexibility to an already great scanner.

The scroll control is the big knob on the top of the scanner. It looks
like a knob and is the only thing that sticks out on the top other than
the antenna connector.

The power button is the lower left button. It is recessed compared to
the others. You hold it to turn the scanner on. You tap it to control
the backlight (which would not matter to you, I guess).

You can use stereo headphones.

The scanner can beep depending on the user settings. You can set the
keybeep to auto which will vary with the volume, or fix it at a set
level, or turn it off.

Yes, there is a low battery warning by beeping. The beep is adjustable from
low to very annoying.
I think the level is the same as for key presses.

Yes, there is a low battery beep. It follows the keypad beep settings,
and can be set to AUTO, a fixed level, or disabled. I keep mine on AUTO.

Batt low will beep as long as you have keybeep turned on (same level as key
beep)

Also, on the scroll, each step in a menu will also generate a beep. Returning to
the first menu item generates a double-beep. These are also same volume level as
key beep. (Sometimes it is possible for you to pass a detent quickly and not
change menu...or to turn slowly and have the switch "stutter" through a couple
of menu items; the beeps will always be the reliable cue).

Yes, there is a low battery beep. It follows the keypad beep settings,
and can be set to AUTO, a fixed level, or disabled. I keep mine on AUTO.

It's a different (lower) frequency than the key beep. Is that what
you're asking? It beeps about once every 30 seconds or so. That's just a
really rough estimate. I never actually timed it.

yeah lol sorry for so many questions.
I apologize and thanks for the answers.
That's cool though at least i don't need to read the display all the time. I
think this scanner will work great for me.
And i like the way you can control it from the PC.
