Using FreeSCAN you can also do it fairly easily using the method Dave mentioned.

Thanks Dave. I played around a bit with an exsisting system I have. I entered
the UID as a TGID and then alpha tagged it. It does work. It does alternate
between the two. A bit of work but cool. Now, as long as they don't go changing
radios on me I won't have to go back and do this some more.

So far I have figured out that my city's police department uses one id for the
car, one for the main portable radio (one man car) and anything goes for the
other portable radio (if two man car). The system is such that an officer could
use his/her portable radio the whole shift, and if it is not assigned to that
car I would be out of luck. So basically I have a one in three chance of getting
it right in the programming mode of the uid's. But I'll keep trying.

Hello,

When aliasing UIDs, I try to name the department, not the individual.
Departments have call signs so I use the call sign to confirm the department. If
aliasing by individual, that's a lot of name changing.

Just tag the 2nd radio as "spare-1", "spare-2", or whatever name you
wish for those "floating units that may ride in different cars. I tag
Pensacola, FL PD like that, even on FD, Public Works, etc... there is
always "floaters" that hop from unit to unit in all of the departments,
here at least the radios actually stay with the same person, so I can
tell who they are, in a small town like P'Cola, FL, you learn the voices
and each one's personal slang or catch phrase fairly quick. I even use
some of the nicknames of the Sanitation guys I happen to have overheard,
lol.

Hope that may help sort it out a bit more,
Walter

There shouldn't be any duplicate ID's on the system. Every single radio on
the system will have an individual ID.

What most departments do is block IDs together. Actually this is not
necessarily a Dept thing but more of a radio shop programming thing.

Also keep in mind if a radio is not assigned to an individual, it will be
rotated through out the dept. Sure it might be kept in a certain division,
but it makes marking the ID difficult.

When I worked for a 2-way shop we gave FD's a block of ID's, PD had a block
of ID's, Public Works has their own block of ID's.

This helped us find unauthorized users who would try to use a random ID. If
we saw an ID that didn't match our Blocking scheme, we had an easier time
blocking the ID when we checked the master Logs.

It also showed us if FD radios affiliated with PD talk groups and stuff like
that.

Hello all,

I have purchased recently a BCD396XT unit, hoping that I will have time to use
it. But with two babies in our home - the time I have for it is close to zero.

So I offer it here for sale first, before posting it on Ebay.

This is the complete package:

BCD396XT - with all original accessories

Hard leather case

6 adapters (connector saver, SMA to BNC etc.)

5 handheld antennas ( various frequency bands and sizes, telescopic,
stubby, rubber ducky etc. includes SRH805S stealth antenna)

4 mobile antennas (for car use): wide band, 800 Mhz etc.

All this is in pristine, unused condition.

I would like to get $600 for the complete lot + shipping if I have to ship it.
(my cost was over $900 for all the included items!)

Payment via paypal or cash.

I live in Oakville and work in Mississauga if you would like to see / pick up.

Please email me at x2000nNOSPAMyahoo.com (replace NOSPAM with @)

Thank you for reading...

Regards,

I programmed 3 counties: conventional, agencies and trunk sys. and it seems that
I'm not getting everything on scan mode. I tagged both site and talkgroup under
1 quickkey number, 92(qk's)<--same as tags? altogether and I deleted
pre-existing ones on upload. I can't figure out if I've reach max talkgroups. Am
I getting some of these groups lockedout? Also I edited out duplicates. Am I
missing something? Anyone know? I'm playing hit or miss on some of this
programming. I'm using ARC-XT>I put 3 software choices in hat and picked that
one! Also, I was thinking of upgrading antenna to an 800mhz one.

It's not clear to me what you mean by

"I tagged both site and talkgroup under 1 quickkey number, 92(qk's)<--same as
tags?"

Trunked sites and conventional systems have System/Site/Service Quick
Keys. Talkgroups individually have no quick keys at all. The groups
that they are contained in have Group Quick Keys.

It is unlikely that you've reached the maximum number of talkgroups
unless the trunked system has more than 500, which is the maximum.

You might want to take a look at the following for an explanation of the
structure of the data in your scanner.

You mention the possibility of upgrading your antenna. Obviously, an
inadequate antenna could be why you aren't getting what you expect to
hear. On the other hand, you could have the best antenna and location
and you wouldn't hear anything if your programming isn't right. From
what you've stated, I'm inclined to think that you have a programming
problem. I'd suggest that you get in the car with your radio and drive
to a location where you can't possible not be in range of the system and
see what you hear. If you aren't hearing it there, your initial problem
is programming. Once you've got that resolved, you can determine
whether you need a better antenna to hear from your normal location.

Some advice please. I'm programming in some cities and counties in several of
our counties in adjoining Illinois (we're in Missouri). They're StarCom21. I
understand and use the best method for programming trunked systems is the method
that Paul has setup for us to follow on the Wiki:
SYSTEM 4
.....SITE 1
..........FREQUENCY 1
..........FREQUENCY 2
..........FREQUENCY 3
.....SITE 2
..........FREQUENCY 4
..........FREQUENCY 5
..........FREQUENCY 6
.....GROUP 1
..........TALKGROUP ID 1
..........TALKGROUP ID 2
..........TALKGROUP ID 3
.....GROUP 2
..........TALKGROUP ID 4
..........TALKGROUP ID 5
SYSTEM 5, etc.

But I have a problem and maybe I'm just getting old and dense... For example -
St. Clair County, Illinois has many cities and agencies which reside in their
StarCom "location". Am I going to run out of room before I get all of them
entered? I know there are some maximums but right now I have too many "numbers"
spinning around in my head to remember what my maximums are. I have 4 heavily
populated counties which all have a significant number of StarCom sites,
frequencies and talkgroups. I just want to make sure, before I spend a
tremendous amount of time juggling through this, to make sure I do it right.
(None of the talkgroups are setup with the sites - one has to go through them
and figure out talkgroup what goes with what site!)

Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks ahead of time!

Shelley

P.S. When I go to Radio Reference, ask for St. Clair Co, IL trunked, I get a
whole lot more than St. Clair County - I think I get most, if not all of
Illinois.

I guess when I assigned quick keys 3-92 I thought the talkgroups were tagged as
quickkey number too;trunked on left and talkgroup to the right.I was confused as
to QK assignment for a group and Number tag for system or channel. Also, I just
realized I was restricted as to how many groups I could upload on the ARC
demo.Let me read more on the proper way to program and organize groups.

While number tags can be useful, they aren't crucial and I'd suggest
that you forget about them until you've got System/Site/Service Quick
Keys and Group Quick Keys under control.

I don't understand the "trunked on left and talkgroup to the right."
Trunked is a description of the type of system and talkgroups are the
individual channels which are contained in one or more groups in each
system.

I generally recommend that newcomers use FreeScan because I feel that
it's easier to use than the others and it's free. If you need
additional features, then you can consider the others later. My
personal choice is FreeScan and ProScan, using each for the things that
I feel it's best at. I also own ARC-XT, but find it less useful.
Others prefer it, of course.

An additional advantage of FreeScan is that its popularity makes it easy
to exchange datafiles with others either so that they can look at what
you've done and provide assistance or so that you can get files for your
area from someone who has already programmed for that area.

I live in the Chicago area, i have programmed about ten towers for Starcom that
are within 25 miles of my location for every day use...You can also go to
www.carmachicago.com and pick out those towers and match up most TG's close to
you....If you have the scanner in "Search" in the "Site" it will give you most
used TGs also in your area....In my 396XT i kept pre-programmed Starcom and
rebanded all the 800 freqys so in SQK-28 i more or less have most of the state

Radio Reference Web Service: In Radio reference when selecting State, County
from dropdown, and Trunk Systems button, then Agency dropdown menu. It gives you
two windows, on left Sites: menu and on the right side, Talkgroups. I tried to
import a screenshot but I'm not sure how in reply message here.

Also, I forgot to delete my old systems on my scanner! I tried the mobile test
you suggested and only got a few broadcasts, I think my antenna positioning has
something to do with that and programming was definitly an issue.I re-programmed
after deleting all channels and I seem to get more broadcasts! Thank you for

OK, now I know what you are referring to. On the left are the sites
that make up the system. You should choose the one or more that you
want. Once they've been downloaded to the software, you need to assign
each of them a System/Site/Service Quick Key. You can assign more than
one site to a particular SQK if you desire. In fact a trunked site and
a conventional system can share the same SQK if you want to do it that way.

On the right are the talkgroups. They are divided into groups. Within
each group the talkgroups are the numbers after the "ID:". You should
choose those that you want and then assign a Group Quick Key for each
group. That will control all of the IDs in that group.

What state, counties and systems are you trying to program? I'll try to
put together a sample file to get you started. Are you using ARC-XT or
FreeScan?

Thanks dataman! That's pretty much how I finally decided last night I was going
to have to end up doing it. I just would have preferred a more "organized"
initial setup *grin*. I'll also go by the Carma site - an amazing plethora of
information and great group of people! I've known some of them for more years
than I'd like to admit. Hahaa
Thanks again, I'll set up the 4 adjoining Illinois counties with search and
pickup the talkgroups that way. Appreciate your help!

Hello all,

A few months ago I created a blog about Uniden DMA Scanners. Since then I
have posted a few things of special interest to folks getting started. Today
I posted a blog that addresses one of the features I really like about using
Uniden scanners on a daily basis.

I hope you'll check it out and maybe let me know what you think about the
concept of a DMA scanner blog.

The blog is at dmascanning.com

Thanks,
Don, KE4JD

P.S. I am not selling anything!

I have both FreeScan and ARCXT with 180 day Radio Reference subscription.
However, I was kind of misled because I thought I was getting lifetime updates
with radio reference whereas its just lifetime updates for the ARCXT program.
i'm oldschool fan of Police Call from Radio Shack.Thank you again!

Press the menu button, then select Program System (the first item on the
list).

Create a new System, then enter the parameters of that system, then edit
the Groups and create a new Group and set those options, then create
some new channels and set those options (frequency, tone, name, etc).

I'd suggest a premium membership in RadioReference.com. You can then
use ARC-XT to directly download to ARC-XT the data for the systems that
you want to program. Assign each conventional system and each trunked
site a System/Site/Service Quick Key and each group a Group Quick Key.
Make any other changes that you desire to the data.

If your computer has a serial port, be sure to enter the number of the
port that you're using into ARC-XT. If you have no serial port, you'll
need either a serial to USB adapter or the Uniden USB-1 cable which
contains an adapter. With either the adapter or the USB-1 be sure to
install the driver before connecting the cable to your computer. Once
you've installed the driver and connect the adapter or USB-1, your
computer will assign a com port number to that device. You should be
able to find it in Windows Device Manager. Enter that number into ARC-XT.

You can now transfer the data to your scanner.

Be sure to save the data so that you can reload it or modify and reload
it as you desire in the future.

Hi Joe. Will do.

Ahhhh! Now That's More Like It

I am kind of a scanner junkie. Most days I have two radios on me with
surveillance type ear pieces going to each ear and the little plastic tubes
poking out from the back of my neck. (And yes that does get strange looks
from strangers and no I did not wear those around the Secret Service when I
saw George W. Busch at the NRB convention a few years ago.) For years now my
two radios have been a Uniden DMA scanner (first a BCD396T now a BCD396XT)
and an amateur radio handy talkie (HT). I carried a Kenwood TH-F6A for many
years (actually I wore out the charging jack on one and had to get a second
one) and recently I bought a Yaesu FT-60r. These are great radios but both
of them had the same problem. The designers never intended for you to scan
with the radios while they are hanging on your belt.

The problem exhibits itself most profoundly when you get in and out of a
vehicle which I do all day a couple of days a week. If it is winter time the
situation is even worse! For example if you wear an amateur HT on your belt
you absolutely have to disable transmit because it is just too easy to
transmit and not know it (at least until your side warms up). So why is it
that after you disable transmit, the radio has to stop the scan to tell you
that you did? Then there is Key Lockout. That would be a wonderful feature
if the PTT didn't stop the scan.

So for years I have had reach down at my side and manipulate buttons while
driving--sometimes restoring the scanning but just as often not.

Today, however was different. I have been watching the Uniden site for
months waiting for a nylon case to be available for purchase. My current
BCD396XT has one but I decided that when I could get another one I would
start carrying my BC346XT. Last week the case became available and I pounced
on it. It arrived yesterday and I took the 346XT with me today. I loaded an
exact copy of my 396XT into the 346XTvia FreeScan (sans digital of course).
I then put it in Key Safe mode and away I went.

It was such a pleasure to jump (ok maybe I should say crawl or slide) in and
out of my truck and not hear a single beep signaling that I had just knocked
the radio out of scan. I'll hang on to my Yaesu HT and will even carry it
with me from time to time but the double Uniden scanner compliment is here
to stay.

Program a conventional system with 1 or more groups, and then put the
channels into the groups as appropriate. You can set them to digital
only and then add the NAC if you have that information (or search for it
if you don't). I looked up Littleton and see that they are using a NAC
of 293 on FG3 and 296 on FG5.

Set it like you said - to Conventional. Then, you can leave the audio
set to ALL (the default) or change it to DIGITAL ONLY if P25 is the only
thing used on the frequency.

You should note that you will not hear this type of setup far - maybe
1/2 miles or so from the transmitter for mobiles and portables.

why are you selling ?

and by the way your price seems resonable at 600 if your giving all those
