Thanks, Paul.

That was a lot of work, and it's been a useful option to have as I pop in and
out of southern Colorado. I've especially appreciated the talk-group ID's.

That system is meant only as "something to listen to while you program the
scanner for real." Any notes I made when making the system are long gone.

OK, I have had scanners in the past and they are so different then this new one,
I feel like I went back down to newbie status.

Anyway, to my questions, I want to scan Michigan State Police, its already
pre-programmed, but it doesn't ever pick anything up. I manually programmed a
new system for the local digital trucked system and that is working fine, but am
not getting MSP yet.

Also, it keeps showing Alaska on the main screen. I tried locking it out, but
it still shows up. Do I have to delete all the systems I wont use? Will that
help me listen to the Michigan State Police?

My manual programming shows up in the bottom bar and is called s0 (I think of it
like a bank) and the Alaska one show up as s2. Is there a way to switch what s2
looks at or something. I am a little lost here.

Once I get the MSP working, I can focus on putting some conventional systems on
it.

Alaska is the only system that is unlocked when the radio is first turned on.
You have to hit the Menu Button ->  Then select Program System -  Choose alaska

Sorry I am not familiar with the exact key presses to do all this but the above

Actually, a much faster way is to use the SQK assigned to the system(s). The
preloaded systems are assigned as documented here:
http://info.uniden.com/twiki/bin/view/UnidenMan4/UsingPreloadedSystems

(Alaska is SQK 21, Michigan MPSCS is SQK 33)

I've posted this before, but thought it might be helpful to your
understanding of the system and group quick keys.

System Quick Keys (SQKs) allow you activate and deactivate systems or
trunked sites for scanning. For conventional systems, the SQKs are
set at the system level. For trunked systems, the SQKs are set at
the site level. There can be more than one system or site assigned to a SQK.

The single digit SQKs are toggled between active and inactive by
pressing the corresponding key on the keyboard. The two digit SQKs
are toggled between active and inactive by pressing the ./NO key
followed by the two digits on the keyboard.

The display

S0:1234--7**0 indicates that SQKs 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 0 are active;
SQKs 8 and 9 are inactive; and SQKs 5 and 6 are unassigned.

S1:12---678** indicates that SQKs 11, 12, 16, 17, and 18 are active;
SQKs 19 and 10 are inactive; and SQKs13, 14, and 15 are unassigned.

Etc. to S9:12345678790

Each system can have up to 10 Group Quick Keys (GQKs). The indicator
for the GQKs is the line below the SQK line and works the same way
except that it only has ten possible values and therefore is only
single digits. There can also be more than one group assigned to a GQK.

GQKs can be toggled active and inactive by pressing FUNC and the
keyboard number while the scanner is scanning the particular system
which contains the groups that you are controlling.

If you use software to program your scanner, you can assign the SQKs
and GQKs as you set up your programming and can also set
the initial state of the SQKs and GQKs.

Hope this is helpful.

That's not true. All the Systems are unlocked. They are just *disabled*
via their respective System Quick Keys (SQKs). Just disable the Alaska
System with it's SQK, then enable the one(s) you want with their SQKs.

*In order to get MSP going you need to delete all those pre-programmed sites
and start over. Don't know why they did that. I did that here in St Louis
only able to listen oto StarCom 21 in Illinois. Only problem is that there
are 360 site towers with all there control channels and what you end up with
is not much. So you should delete all pre-programmed sites and start from
scratch. Not much fun, but when you get the scanner programmed to suit your
needs, like the conventional systems, you should have smooth sailing*

I can't think of any reason why it would be necessary to delete those
systems unless you wanted to free up the space or the system quick
keys. You can certainly program in other systems in addition to what
was there to start with without deleting the initial setup. It's
just a matter of knowing how to activate and deactivate the various
systems using the system quick keys. Until you understand the system
quick keys, you are likely to find the scanner confusing. Once you
understand them, you are likely to wonder why you were previously confused.

It depends.

If you want to enable/disable all the sites at the same time, program
the SQKs the same.

If you want to be able to enable/disable the Sites individually, assign
different SQKs to each Site.

It's all what you want to do and how you want the scanner to work that
will dictate how the scanner should be programmed.

I carry my handheld scanner in my carry-on bag on flights in/out of Oregon,
California and Alaska and it's never been questioned.?? I travel about every
other month and?the scanner has been along for the ride for the past year or
so.? I remove the antenna (so it doesn't look so much like a radio...probably
not necessary but I haven't had a problem so I'm not changing) and it's wrapped
in plastic grocery bags for cushioning.

I couldn't find anything on TSA's web site prohibits scanners.? I suspect that
as long as you leave it off, you'll be fine.?? I'd also suggest that you pack
your carry-on so that there is no reason for TSA scrutiny.

That's my experience.? Good luck!

I've traveled extensively with scanners and have never had an issue. They are in
my carry on, turned off going through security (and on the plane, too, for that
matter).

Ok, so I'm going out of town on Sunday and wanted to bring the scanner. Does
anyone know for sure whether or not I'll be able to carry the scanner on the
plane? I don't really see TSA letting it through but I just wanted to be sure
before I do it.

Thank you all for your help. I was able to activate the Michigan State polilce
because all the quick keys for the sites are the same for MI. As far as Alaska
goes, I had some trouble turning it off, so I just deleted the system.

I do think I have a much better understanding of the new scanner now.

Thanks again!!

I travel fairly frequently via airline, and I put mine in my carry-on bag -
battery in, antenna on, headphones in the side pocket. I've been doing 20
years, pre and post 9/11. Never had any problems.

Dan,

I routinely carry a scanner on aircraft without incident. You just
can't have it on during the flight

I've had a scanner in my carry-on for years, and I fly about once a month. You
should be able to get through with the scanner.

That's not true on all flights. Some will let you use it except during
take-off and landing. All electronics have to be turned off then.

I try to look for carriers that don't prohibit their use. They are out
there.

Actually, the moderator (not me that time) missed a couple errors:

-----------
I understood his message, even with the spelling mistakes. Were <We're>
not graded here<,> this is not school, <and> we don't pass or fail on
the mistakes in our messages. At least his post contributed to the
thread, y <. Y> ours is nothing more then a personal attack on another
member.
-----------

But, I agree with Mel's concept of the reply - please don't criticize
other people's grammar. English is not everyone's first language on this
list, and not everyone got straight A's in school. In some cases, typos
happen, too. If you must comment on someone else's grammar, do so via
private email and not on the list.

As longs as yuns can understandz da post, know harm know fowl.

Well I have to agree that government employee's should know how to spell and
show some pride in their education. The problem is EBONICS and a failure of
our schools to teach spelling and English properly. Pretty sad when my ex
girlfriend wants to join the Army but can't spell military! She actually
spelled it "milty". It's also sad that she has no clue what the difference
is between buy, bye, and by.......
So yeah I'm peeved to at the post by a TSA employee who can't spell.....
