It's an earphone jack, not an external speaker jack. Use an earphone
(wired or wireless) or use an amplified speaker.

I suppose you could rewire the jack to the speaker to get full audio output.

Thanks Joe,

But, I was referred to a lapel speaker on scanner master with
an antenna jack that cancels out the attenuation. It connects the speaker ground
to the antenna ground and bypasses it.

David

Hi guys!

I have my BC346 on scan, and its only holding on one system. Any ideas how to
have it scan all of my systems in the scanner instead of one? I have to hit
function to switch it to another, but then it doesn't move again...

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Subject: No hits on TGID's in Scan, no alpha tags
mkw400_y

I tried to search this down from the historic posts but had no luck. I'm not
seeing the behavior I was expecting with my 346 on trunked systems.
Specifically...

System: Mass State Police, Moto end code checked, Decimal ID format, ID Mode
(see below), Tape out: off, No XT Options set.

Sites: 14 of them set up... only control channels entered, selected from the MSP
page on RadioReference.com. In Freescan, APCO mode set to AUTO, Threshold 8,
Moto 800 Standard Type 2, Modulation Auto, CC ONLY checked.

Groups: 8 set up. Number of channels varies per Group. Display filled in for all
cases, TGID set all cases as decimal number (All sites and groups are pasted
from RR). No L/O, No Pri, Audio type set to ALL.

Problems

1. ZERO results when I am in SCAN mode (unexpected). In SEARCH mode, I see both
the TGID's I have programmed in as well as others I had not programmed
(expected).

2. I never ever see the alpha tags that have been entered for any of the groups.
It only shows TGID's and Unit ID's. I have verified that many of the TIGD's I
see in the Free Scan search log are indeed TGID's I have programmed in (note:
these log entries are from hits that only took place in SEARCH mode… never any
hits in SCAN).

Any suggestions for either? Thanks in advance.

I believe Mass State Police is a rebanded system, so it needs to be programmed
as MOT custom with the rebanded band plan.

However, from your terminology it sounds like you are using software to program
(which software?).

If you are receiving something either the software correctly set the sites for
rebanding or at least one of the sites you entered hasn't rebanded, yet.

They symptoms sound like you've not set the TGID correctly. Maybe the TGID field
has a space or other extra character that is hosing the xfer.

Hi and thank you for your help. I'm using FreeSCAN for my software. I did check
for extra characters (great idea)... thanks. No issues there. Bad news about the
rebanding... I've tried to understand that and band plans with no luck (is that
the same as a fleet map?). Would this problem(s) be something that has been
solved somewhere on the web... some link perhaps? I really have tried to
understand the banding things though I had not associated that with this
problem. Either way, thank you.

I have a 396xt also a 346xt and having the same problem on both radios. Margate
FD dispatch which is part of Coral Springs; the radio stays open on dispatch

Coral Springs first rebanded.  The control frequencies I have are;
853.87500
853.62500
852.5500
852.3000
The group for dispatch is, 49712.

1. Make sure you have the END CODE enabled.

2. It may be a system problem. This has happened on other systems and it
affects the user radios as well as scanners. The only solution is to
wait for them to fix it.

I figured out how to put a few frequencies into a "system" under a "quick key".
Scan includes those frequencies, but spends most of its time running through
"Custom 1" through "Custom 10". I'd like to deselect those.

A Custom search doesn't work like a "system". Its Quick Key is selected under
Search with Scan (which means what?). I tried putting all Custom Searches under
Quick Key 0 and then pressing 0 during the scan to disable that Quick Key. No
effect whatsoever.

Do I need to delete any Quick Search that I don't need?

Any help would be appreciated. I have downloaded the "Easier to Read
BC346XT Scanner Manual", which is an improvement over Uniden's. But sometimes,
the device just doesn't do as he says it does.

If I had known how incredibly complicated the user interface would be, I would
have left this device on the shelf.

While it is scanning a search you want to lock out, press F+L/O, L/O to
permanently lock out the search range.

I know this is a forum for the BC346XT but I had a question about lightning
arrestors that I couldn't find the answer to on Google and I was hoping someone
here could help me.

I recently purchased a Radioshack discone antenna that receives 50 - 1300 MHz
and a Diamond SP1000 lightning arrestor. What does the frequency on the
lightning arrestor mean? Diamond listed on their website the frequency to be DC
- 1000 MHz and it is also written on the arrestor itself. What does the DC
stand for and will this prevent me from listening to VHF/UHF/800MHz Bands on
this antenna if I install the SP1000?

I also had a question about SWR. Diamond had that listed as "less than 1:1".
What does SWR stand for and how does that relate to the antenna and lightning
arrestor? Why do you need an SWR meter to tune an antenna?

I am also looking for a book about antennas on a beginner level that could help
me understand things better. Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about arrestor, but Standing Wave Ratio(SWR) only applies if you
transmit using this antenna, not receive. Therefore, it has no real
significance. Likewise, most books deal with transmitting, not receiving. You
can create a situation similar to SWR by using the wrong impedance coax cable.
but this is very very minor since Scanners are really very broad in impedance
range to begin with. I would not worry about the arrestor. Just get a good
one(not the cheapest) that matches the cable and connectors.

I've been a fan of Diamond since I purchased the SRH 320. But, correct me if I'm
wrong: 1:1 SWR is a perfect match load to impedance. Impossible to be "less than
1:1"?

DC means Direct Current, or Zero MHz. So the arrester you bought covers
anywhere
from 0 to 1000 MHz. Above 1000 MHz the losses start going up, reducing the
signal
strength of what you are trying to listen to. It will work fine for
VHF/UHF/800 MHz.

BTW, that's a nice antenna for scanning. If you are going to roof mount it,
just make
sure your coax is not too lossy, especially at 800 MHz. I would highly
recommend
using RG-59, or even better, RG-6. It will have much lower loss than your
standard
RG-58, especially in the 800MHz band. It would be sad to go through all the
hassle
of putting up a nice outdoor antenna, just to have the majority of the
improved signal
absorbed by the coax.

The are a LOT of basic antenna theory articles already on the web that I'm
sure can
help. Google is your friend. 8^)

That answers my questions and I really appreciate the help. I am still pretty
new to scanners and antennas. I did mount the antenna on the roof, and I was
able to extend my range almost 50 miles using a PRO-107 scanner. I have been
really impressed with Radioshack equipment so far. Unfortunately, the only
cable Radioshack had at the time I purchased the antenna was 50' of RG-58 (the
cheap stuff $19.99). I am looking into getting some RG-6, RG-8, or RG-59.
Thanks again :=)

Using the RG 6 will help a lot. Did you ask for the RG6  or just look where they
keep the CB/scanner coax. If you looked for it, you wouldn't find it unless you
went to the other side of the store where the TV stuff is kept. As the RG6 is
used for satellite and cable tv, it would be over there. I have the big discone
on a 20 foot mast and can hear car to car over 30 miles away. Surprised the
daylights when I heard a transmission on a freq I knew to be c/c. Surprised me
even more when I was able to ID the location.

In my many years of coax use especialy now with P25 systems the "ONLY" coax that
hears all the local towers on the ILL Starcom 700/800 system without dropouts in
decoding is "LMR400", it makes a world of difference.....

I was looking at Radioshack where they kept the CB/scanner coax. I am a little
surprised that you can use RG6, which brings me to my next question. If RG6
coax cable is 75 Ohm and RG58 is 50 Ohm will the Ohm difference in coax line
cause any problems with the 50 Ohm Diamond SP1000 lightning arrestor? Does it
really matter?

Someone mentioned using "LMR400" coax line. I will look into that as well. I
feel like it is a good idea to just buy the better coax line from the start than
to continually upgrade…
