The frequencies are in the 800Mhz trunked Motorola range. When it "hangs" it's
as if some user has an open keyed up mic. There's a soft hissing in the
background.

Squelch is set at 2, I've played with that setting to see if it has any effect..
no, it doesn't stop the "hanging".
When the antenas are disconected it does not hang up an any channels.
Reception is very poor and choppy since the hanging issue began, they're
related
I'm sure. I live in a major metro area and reception has always been strong.
I just turned on the scanner and recieved nothing for a few moments then some
brief choppy conversation at 858.2625 then it hangs on that channel, no more
scanning just hanging.

I really hope my scanner is not dead but it's looking grim.

What are some of the frequencies involved?

What is your exact squelch setting?

Does it do this without the antenna connected?

We've had a similar problem here in CT on several of the CSP sites. It's
almost as if there is a low level carrier holding the squelch open following
a transmission. Found that we needed to enable the End-code detection or
perhaps disable it, I forget,

It definitely sounds like you have a technical issue that needs
addressed. Simply hanging can be many causes but hanging combined with
lack of reception leads me to think it's an issue that needs addressed
by a service shop - perhaps related to the CPU malfunctioning.

It would have been: Enable end code detection.

But in your case there wasn't the concurrent lack of reception, was
there? (I'm assuming he was talking about lack of reception on the
normal frequencies, and not just in general)

No the low level carrier would hang the scanner on the voice channel and
lose the CC. When locked on the low level carrier, the unit would not resume
unless done manually. If it was a busy site, random TG's would come through.

Only Uniden's were affected as far as I could tell from our CT group. GRE's
didn't seem sensitive to this issue. The carrier was always on the same site
and received at about 1/2 or less signal strength than the regular signal or
when a TG would come on.

I'm having a problem with the backlight/power key. Here's the repro scenario:

*Std Mot Type 2 Trunk
*Quick key #9
*TGIDs are in SCAN mode

Scenario:

I hear audio on a TGID
I press HOLD button
(Audio is coming thru)
I press BACKLIGHT/POWER button
(Backlight comes on)
(Audio cuts out briefly, lasts about 1-2 secs)
(Audio re-establishes)

Notes:

The audio cut out does not happen when scanning normally and pressing the
BACKLIGHT/POWER button

Why would pressing the BACKLIGHT/POWER button reset the audio?

First, check to make sure you don't have Close Call, Channel Priority,
or Weather Priority enabled. The issue may not have anything to do with
the backlight.

It's been a while since I've used freescan. but if I remember correctly, there
is a print option where you can print out quite detailed reports.

I think if you click on "file" up towards the top left part of the screen you
will see the option for print.

Hope this helps.

I was wondering if this would work in place of using the disc tap option? I have
seen software to decode digital on your pc. Also, what type of plug is necessary
for the jack on the side for this option.

Thanks, Bob

Would it work in place of the tap? That all depends on what you want to
do. For some applications, it will work. For others, it will not.

The cable that comes with the scanner is what you need for the jack on
the side. It plugs right into the scanner and the PC, and you can use
any modes for which the scanner supplies data (Trunking) and of course
limited to the modes supported by the 346.

Don't comfuse equipment manufacturer with communications system types.
Motorola is talking about a Motorola trunk communications system, and
not just someone who uses Motorola radios.

What state/county/city are you in? With that info someone should be able
to tell you what system types you need to be concerned with.

OK.

EDACS is the GE version of a Motorola system (meaning that it was GE's
trunking format). GE then became Ericsson/GE, then Ericsson, then
Com*Net, then Tyco, then M/A-Com, and now Harris (I think I have the
order correct).

As I mentioned, Motorola is Motorola's trunking format (well, their main
one and the one they sold most of).

LTR is E.F.Johnson's format, although they did license it to other
companies to make equipment for (such as Motorola).

Each has specific programming requirements, but for all of them you have
to program the correct frequencies, and on all but Motorola the correct
LCN with the frequency (you don't really have to know what an LCN is,
but it stands for Logical Channel Number, or the channel number in the
trunk system). Also for all, you have to program in the talkgroups used.

Looks like your County has some VHF freqys but my guess is there on the Indiana
Analog and Digital Trunk System where your gonna have to buy a Digital
scanner....There on "Site13 in Elkhart Co that has a CC of 860.9625 and a
alternate of 866.975.....

I want to monitor digital UHF 800 on the BCT 346XT since most the police and
fire are on digital now. I noticed there is software to decode digital signals
and there is a product that decodes digital using an IF output of 10.7 mhz. This
product actually decodes so the listener can hear the audio and display it on a
screen.

The key you should take from his post is the LCNs:

LCN 02 155.1525
LCN 04 155.6175
LCN 06 154.3625

That is the same programming you should have in your 346.

My scanner will occassionaly sound the alert tone on the priority channel when
it is not set for the tone out feature.
Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks, Bob
