I agree that the 800 MHz antenna works well, but not "picks up a whole
lot more" except on 800 MHz.

From what I've found, it does work much better on 800 MHz, a little
better on UHF, about the same on VHF, and falls flat on Low Band
compared with the stock antenna.

That said, I often use one.

There are other antennas that will perform better, but they are two to
three times the size of the stock antenna or 800 MHz antenna.

I agree, but I don't like using the BNC adapter. I use SMA antennas from
Scannermaster and http://www.wpsantennas.com/ in the same basic range but
they're not quite as good as the Radio Shack 800 MHz. Why oh why can't someone
come out with a comparable SMA version of it!

The Antennex DEXE821sm is similar. I use it and the bnc versions for a
cleaner look.

I used to hate the SMA (well, dislike it), but then I started to look at
it differently: When my BNC connector wears out, it will be much easier
to replace it than it used to be.

As for those who may complain about insertion loss, there is less than
0.05 dB of insertion loss (IOW, nothing to would ever be able to notice).

I do with the adapter were black (and yes, I know you can get them in
black) so it weren't as 'obvious' when you have a black scanner and
black antenna. But back on the topic, the 800 MHz antenna doesn't have a
covered BNC, so I guess I would have silver there anyway.

It's much easier (read: faster) to change antennas with a BNC than an
SMA, too.

Thanks for your suggestion. I got the 806-866 thinking that I could use it for
700 MHz if I get a 396XT or its successor. I don't have the 821-902 to compare.
I like the cleaner look too.

I understand what you are saying, but when I first got my radio and tried using
the BNC connector and attaching an antenna and then taking it off and attaching
another antenna, etc., it still seemed to me like it was putting some stress on
the radio's SMA connection. I probably worry too much about stuff like that,
and perhaps I should try it again because it did work great and I didn't notice
any loss. But, on the other hand, I greatly prefer the way it looks with an SMA
antenna and I had pretty much decided to just put one on and leave it alone
(rather than changing antennas all the time). One thing's for sure, regardless
of which type antenna, the 346 is a great radio!

Hi everyone;
Read the replies, did a little digging, and ended up ordering a Watson
W-889 telescopic, 25-1900 Mhz. You can adjust the length to match
different wavelengths. I forget where I first saw it don e- maybe a ham
show - but a guy had something like this, and had little marks (nail
polish maybe?) painted different on the antenna. the "blue" mark was
best for the 800 range, red for another, and so on. Should arrive next
week. Will let you know how it works.

The only thing you need are the control channels.

866.3625
866.4125
866.6875
867.2875

Put the above frequencies in the trunked frequency SITE list and upload it
to the radio.

You can also input the talk groups you are interested in.

Hi all
I asked for some advice not long ago, and here's how it went.

I bought a new Watson w-889 expandable antenna for my 346XT, and it came in
the mail the other day. Closed it's about the same length as the stock antenna
that comes with the 346xt.

I am still experimenting with different lengths for different frequencies, but
already it does a better job than the standard "rubber duck", but it is not
quite as good as the external car antenna (Hustler) I use while driving. But
even inside a building, or outside while walking, the Watson pulls in a lot
more, from farther away too. Although on that last point, i've noticed some
days, regardless of antenna used, it's easier to pull in signals from farther
away than other days.

So far, for a noob like myself, I'm happy with it

I now want to enter all the fire id's and ambulance id's and so on,
My first question is ,
Do I have to create new sites for each of those, or just put them into their

Question 2 ,
Group quick keys. If there is 2 different systems and/or sites. Let's say system
1 is conventional stuff and system/site 2 is motorola. Can I assign the same

For each. Or has the gqk's have to be different even though it's different

Sites are just for the trunked frequencies. You can create up to 20 channel
groups within a system...they'll all use the site(s) for the system you have
programmed/enabled. You do not enter a new site for each channel group.

You can re-use channel group GQKs (even within the same system). However, when
you F+GQK to enable/disable a GQK, it only affects the channel groups in the
current system. So, if you are in System A when you press F+1, GQK 1 will be
toggled only for System A. System B's GQK 1 groups will be unaffected.

Hi, thanks for the info about moto type 2 it worked great. I created the site
which I called suffolk county. And entered a group called suffolk police.
I now want to enter all the fire id's and ambulance id's and so on,
My first question is ,
Do I have to create new sites for each of those, or just put them into their
respective groups and put them all under the site/system called suffolk county ?

Question 2 ,
Group quick keys. If there is 2 different systems and/or sites. Let's say system
1 is conventional stuff and system/site 2 is motorola. Can I assign the same
group quick key
For each. Or has the gqk's have to be different even though it's different
systems/sites
Thanks,

Keith

Hello there,

I just bought my fiance's father a new scanner. I need to know step by step
how do I make the Sacramento preprogrammed system the default system so when
he turns on the radio the scanner will already be on Sacramento? Also I
need to know how to set up the SAME weather warning as well please.

I have a BC346xt and it seems like it doesn't last long on batteries. i have
brand new Energizer NiMH batteries and the radio started beeping telling me they
were dead. i checked them on the tester and they were still in the lower green.
my portable Boomtube speakers operates down into the yellow on the same or
similar batteries. surely this scanner would do the same. My RS Pro97 will go
way longer then this scanner.

Sounds like what most should get for battery life, and always use a
charger designed for your cells. (IOW, not the scanner)

Of course, I think he was using alkalines, so the charge method would
not apply.

Fully charged NiMHs should show 4.00V or higher. Alkalines should show
4.5V or higher. (been a while since I used alkalines in the scanner, so
the 4.50V figure might be higher, as 4.50V would be the minimum spec on
new cells)

The low voltage beep should start at 3.50V (approximately) and the
auto-shutdown should occur around 3.40V.

Do you have any way to measure the voltage without the cells in the
scanner? Either the scanner is loading down the cells if you're getting
3.60V with fresh cells, or the cells are bad.

For clarity, what are you using? Alkalines or NiMH (or other), and what
brand?

If your referring to me I said I was using Energizer NiMH rechargeables that
are brand new and i charge them in a full size Rayovac charger that shuts
off when charge is complete.
It's quite disappointing that the radio itself doesn't shut off
automatically, when charge is complete, like the Yeasu VX7R ham radios.

Jumping in here out of step, I just unplugged my 346xt from
charging overnight, and I noticed too that a day (8 hours?) of operation
kills the batteries pretty quick too.   A couple of things;

      - the scanner came with a set of generic or "no-name" NiMH
batteries, and fully charged I get a reading of 4.05 V;
      - it takes a long, long time to charge those batteries in the
scanner - I have to leave them overnight to charge up. By contrast,
Energizer rechargeables that I charge directly in the battery charger
seem to not take as long to charge up;
      - I've not tried the Energizers in the scanner itself, but I use
them in my Icom scanner, and while it's apples vs oranges here, I sure
get a lot longer life out of the Engergizers;

My wild, purely speculative guess here is that the "free
batteries" that came with the 346xt are likely the cheapest rechargeable
NiMH money can buy (they are made in China, at least the ones I have)
whereas the Energizers are made in Japan. I've not tried the
Energizers (or any other higher quality rechargeable) in the 346xt yet,
but maybe the battery life problem that I too notice is directly related
to the quality of the battery supplied. For "free", well I guess you
get what you pay for. :)
