Hey Everyone,

Anton put out a call for a marshall for this weekend for the Fox Hunt event.  Still searching for help.  Since the cat is outta the bag, I made plans several months ago to go to his favorite steak house in WI.  Joining us will be all his buddies from college that use to go to Schwartz's with him, so it is really important that we have someone help marshall for Fox Hunt.  If you can please let me know.

Thank you so much for your help

If you want to stay warm (and dry) viking style then make sure you
RSVP for a viking wool hood that you can decorate in the 10am Norse
Seam Treatment Class. Here is an example of one of the wool hoods with
decorative seam treatments-
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/K1_lzVYwP8tlz1QHFHsog9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink

They are completely sewn, so even though you won't finish the
decorative stitches, you can still wear the hood to keep you warm.

I have wool in black and variety of neutral colors-
https://picasaweb.google.com/107177881386152930272/MiscPhotos#5789898388650183010
. If you want a specific color of wool I don't have, I can see if I
can find it at vogue. If you want one of the wool hoods, please RSVP
by Thursday.

For those not wanting a hood, we will have linen Dublin hoods and
Swedish hats to decorate
Examples of the Dublin Hoods:

Some people have asked questions through email and through facebook,
so I figured I would share them here:

1. I am allergic to wool, can I have a linen hood instead?
Yes, though for a viking linen hood (as opposed to the dublin hoods)
are still $20. My linen stock is very low right now and I would need
to pick up linen at Vogue, which runs between $14-20 a yard. Please
let me know by Thursday if you would like a linen hood, and in what
color

2. I have a viking hood, can I bring that?
Yes. I will have an assortment of embroidery threads, if you have a
specific color (or fiber other than cotton), please bring it with you.
You will want 2-3 skeins of embroidery thread.

3. I have my own wool, can I make my own hood?
YES! But it must be pre-sewn before the class. Here are a few viking
hood patterns- http://www.medieval-baltic.us/skjold.html,
http://fiamettatrastevere.blogspot.com/2012/06/lyvy-hood.html

4. What if I just want a hood, but don't want to take the class?
Sure, I am fine with that. However the seams on the hoods won't be
double sewn, so you will want to do that later or bribe someone to it
for you (or decorate the seams for you)

Any other questions, feel free to email me

Greetings All,

Since I found myself unable to take on the long drive to Rose Tourney, I've offered to be MIC for Rapier at Fox Hunt.

I've got a melee scenario and a tourney planned, followed by pick-ups till you drop.  I tried to stick somewhat to their viking themed event.

As always pick-ups and auths in the morning.

Herd the Sheep Melee

Planning to use the sheep from the armour-free challenge being held that day.   Simple idea, get the sheep to the longhouse before others can stop you or steal your sheep.   If a sheep is used as a parry device, it is dead on the field and not a point anymore (so don’t kill the sheep).

“Let me see what you got there?” Tourney

A Double Elimination tourney.  Fighters will enter the field with a chosen weapon style, approach their opponent, and say “Let me see what you got there?”   Fighters will declare what style they are fighting, and in which hand in the instance they say “Offhand Single”.  Then a coin is flipped by the marshal after labeling one fighter ‘heads’ and one ‘tails’.   Winner of the coin toss then picks which of the weapon styles, of the two brought to the field, they will use.  The loser takes the remaining style.  In the case of a style you are unauthorized in, revert to single sword.  Coin toss may be changed to Rock/Paper/Scissors/Lizard/Spock upon the fighter’s and/or marshal’s whim.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock

So Bob comes out with Sword and Cloak

And Tom comes out with Sword and Buckler

Bob wins the coin toss.  Bob chooses Sword and Buckler, leaving Tom with Sword and cloak because either:

1) He knows Tom is not great with Sword and Cloak

or

2) He feels more confident with Sword and Buckler, and isn't sure of Tom's talent with sword and Cloak, but knows Tom is always using Sword and Buckler and is quite confident with it.

Pirate Skirmisher, the New Viking Berserker

Get your Skirmishing in.  Taunt, harass, and enrage your opponents.  Kill your opponent and move on to the next one.  Get in all the fighting that you could want.

In Service,

THL Justice McArtain

Hey Ayreton and Midlands,

You of the rocking and awesome barony.....

Thank you for supporting Foxhunt VIII.  There are quite a few people who went above and beyond to help out just cause it needed to be done, so we'd like to make sure that we said thanks!  So Foxvale would like to say to....

Lady Susanna the Short - Thank you so much for stepping in as marshal so Gareth could fix an Autocrat Boo Boo.

His Lordship Justice McArtain - Thank you for being our rapier marshal.  Truly hope you enjoyed yourself.

Sir Fern and Master Robbyan and Lord Mark (?), His Lordship Lukas  - Thank you for moving tables, and benches and trestles, and supports.  Multiple times.  Often in the same direction from whence they came.  Anyone else whose name I missed that moved tables, please know you have my heartfelt appreciation.

Kathryn of Illiton (Who shall now and evermore be known as Katy of Foxvale) her mom Takaia and her sister (Tia???) and her grandmom....yet AGAIN for the upteenth zillionth time worked in the kitchen all day and then cleaned the kitchen they cooked in.

Baroness Verena - Your classes ROCKED  (wish I could have stayed longer....ever thought about a private student?)   And your mead was the coolest thing ever.  Thank you for putting the Mead in Mead Hall.

And speaking of classes.....Dame Nicholaa, Lady Vittoria Governante:  Thank you for sharing your skills and talents and knowledge so others can increase their own skills, talents and  knowlege within our Society.

And speaking of TALENT....Silken Petals...  Not only do your classes share your talents and skills of the scribal arts but they also help to grace the beauty of the Middle Kingdom and go so far to show others how appreciated they are as volunteers.  Helping teach others to do this is the ultimate in Grace.  To Her Ladyship Akiko Catherine O'Brien, Lady Ambr Stormwatch and Lady Elianora Saunfayle...Thank you!

Lord Aengus O'Nolan - Thank you for Ruby Patrol, for carrying boxes and crates and for helping with lunch...and the smiles.  Thank you for the smiles.

Mistress Sarafina - for doing dishes.  Nuff said.  Thank you.  Master Ettienne for hanging with the Burrito so Sarafina could do dishes.  :-)

Dame Ellen of the Scholars and Lord Ottokar - Who brought WARMTH and LIGHT to what was a chilly start to the day.  Those you helped warm, I am sure were most appreciative.

Lady Birgitta Heringadottir - our organized and Awesome Merchant Liason.  Thank you.  Again.  Same time next year?

Merchants - Who brought atmosphere and skills to share along with their wares,  Thank you. Baron Faustino and Baroness Katheryn, Celtic Sun with Mistress Maggie, Her Ladyship Marie la Fauconniere,   and company, Ellen of the Scholars and Friends, Viking Archery Supply, Otter Necessities and the Voluptuous Viking.

Baron Henry and Baroness Nadezda - thank you so much for indulging our Norse whims.

And mostly and most heartfelt...everyone who came to be part of the day.  Thank you for spending time with us, for fighting, for arching, (yes, it's now a verb) for taking classes and hanging out, thank you for doing all of the things you did to make the day run more smoothly that I can't remember or didn't see.

We are Ayreton!  We are the Midands!  We are the Middle Kingdom!  Celebrate being you, because you all rock!

Again I ask....if in my over-exuberance I missed someone, please celebrate them publicly on this list.

See you next year!

Hillary

I know many of you enjoyed the Norse letterboxing at Foxhunt.  That would not have happened if Sir Denewulf Ivarsson wouldn't have written the Skald Riddle Poem.  If you weren't there...here it is in it's entirety.

Find ye first the
flying colors, where
earth and air are
endlessly tilled;
found by a fence
that fends off nothing,
and there in threes
these things are found.

Wary walk and
watch for danger
where next you seek
your second mark;
from carriage crossing
count the twenty
paces sinister to
sign that points to nothing.

Find next fire’s rest,
framed in eight sides,
embers cold are
only just a guide;
strides to count to
stump are measured
three and twenty –
there the marker’s found.

Five steps up and
then four steps down
will find you facing
a field of battle -
there warriors run and
walk seeking home;
watchers benches
wield the marker.

And now the needle
of Norns seek out:
treasures stitched are
trial’s ending;
Norsewoman show
your shields of passage
and claim the might
of Mjolnir as yours.

Thank you Sir....for helping bring authenticity to our game.

As the day was brought to a close and feast was placed before the members at Foxhunt there were people who added to the atmosphere at our Baronial Court and the Feast itself.  These people should not be forgotten.

Lady Hilla Hammasdoghter and Master Cerian Cantwr brought music to the feast by performing songs, while His Lordship Kuji, yet again amazed us all.  Thank you.

Feast was also a time when participants of different contests were recognized for their efforts in various activities throughout the day....

Lady Emma of Ayreton was the archery champion for the day, taking out the moving Fox with three blows.  One being a direct shot between the eyes in the center of it's forhead.

His Lordship Lukas was the first person to solve the Skald Riddle to its end with Birgitta at the Voluptuous Viking.

Lady Hilla Hammasdoghter won the populace vote by creating the best Viking Longship in a Graham Cracker and Candy Medium.  (It was amazing, as were all the other entries.)

All three of the gentles above were given prizes donated by Lady Anne d'Aix, all books appropriate to the Norse theme of the event.

And our Master of Ceremonies: Feast and Court Herald Extroidinaire : Herr Alexander Adelbrecht von Markelingen led the above activities smoothly and without fail.

Thank you and Hugs to all.

Hillary

This past pennsic I upgraded my camp bed to a duck-a-licious one made
by the incredibly talented Sven and Maive. I have been using my old
camp bed as my real bed. However I got my new to me bed and matress
all set up in my room, and no longer need the old camp bed. Before I
posted it on freecycle I wanted to see if anyone in the Barony was
interested.

It is a queen size commercial slat bed with the wooden outerframe held
together with hinges. I have all the hardware, hinges, ext. The only
thing is that after using it for my real bad for the past 6 months,
the slats finally died, so you will in fact need to make your own
slats ( mine were just fencing planks held together by you webbing)

You would need to be able to pick up from Rogers Park. Please let me
know if your interested. I would much rather have it go to a good
home, then to get tossed.

In a little over 7 ½ weeks, our Southern Cousins will be hosting their
annual Crystal Ball. This year’s theme is Germanic Winters Masquerade
http://www.shatteredcrystal.org/crystalballXXIX.htm

This is always a fun event with tons of fighting, fencing, music,
dancing, and terrific food! Here are just a few photos from last
year’s event
(https://picasaweb.google.com/107177881386152930272/CrystalBall2011?authuser=0&f\
eat=directlink)

In preparation for the event, I will be doing a traditional Italian
leather mask making workshop from October 3rd – November 21st.

There are 5 parts to the class, and participants will need to come to
5 of the 8 (7 to have your mask done by crystal ball) weds night
practices. The topics covered will include
Renaissance Mask Techniques
Historical Mask Designs
Building & Designing the Mask
Molding the leather
Finishing the Edges
Dyeing/Painting
Sealing

Not going to Crystal Ball, but still interested in making a leather
mask? Don’t worry, it looks like there will be a ball at RUM and at
the KWCS.

Thankfully “The temple of the stick” has agreed to share their Weds
night site with us, which means I can handle FAR more people then I
would be able to in my little apartment. The workshop will run weds
from 7:30-8:30 in Jefferson Park area.

The class fee for the workshop is $35 and will include all the
supplies needed (molding supplies, leather, and dyes). For those that
would like to supply their own leather, the workshop fee would be $15
for the mold and mask making supplies. Though there is no maximum
number you will need to RSVP for the class, so I can make sure I have
enough supplies. To reserve your spot, or if you have any question
please email me at verena@...

This sounds just wonderful! Alas, I won't be here for any of it, given holidays
and moving to California. Is there any chance someone on this list might be
going, who would consent to videotape the classes and post them on Youtube, so
that people living at the edge of the continent could learn from Baroness
Verena?

It seems that people are not aware (or have forgotten) about the Ayreton Cafe Press page (on a couple of recent occasions, I've been asked where I got my Ayreton shirt or my Ayreton apron), so I thought I'd throw the link out there again.

There are shirts, bags, mugs, baby stuff, a bumper sticker, a water bottle, a clock - all kinds of fun things.

Midrealm Bardic Madness update:
(please repost as appropriate)

We've posted some recommended hotels, for those coming from long distances.
See:
	 http://www.no-gorsedd.com/bmxiv/directions.html

In addition, I'd like to put out a renewed call for patrons and folks who'd
like to teach.

As always, there will be a number of fun challenges, the concert, and a
Scottish themed feast (no impromptu football matches with the haggis will be
tolerated!). Here's the blurb:

December 1, 1292, was a good day for John Balliol - his first full day as
King of Scotland. But less than four years later, after constant
humiliations at the hands of the English, he was defeated in battle and
abdicated. The arms of Scotland were stripped from his surcoat, giving him
the abiding nickname of "Toom Tabard" - "The Empty Suit".

Welcome to
Bardic Madness XIV: Toom Tabard
December 1, 2012

Bardic Madness XIV is hosted by The Barony of the Cleftlands at

West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church
20401 Hilliard Boulevard

Good evening,

Ardena and I will be leaving our Neighborhood tomorrow at 5pm to go out to Elgin for the Ayreton Curia Meeting tomorrow, Sunday, September 30th.

These meetings are always open to the general Populace.

If you would like to go but don't have the transportation means to make it yourself, I I have room for 2 more passengers, or 3 if one or two are medium to small build. I would ask that everyone chip in some money for the gas, I will be trying to avoid tolls.  If your interested, please let me know and we can carpool out.  I suspect this can be done for 20 in gas round trip, do remember this is in Elgin.  So the more we have the cheaper it gets.

Please make sure to email or call me by 4pm tomorrow (Sunday) if you want to ride share.

The Ayreton Yahoo! Group is used to post news, make announcements, and for
discussion of interest to all groups in the Chicago area. We encourage all
people of Ayreton to subscribe and receive email or digests, so although it is
not prohibited, please try to keep chatting to the local group mailing lists.

To prevent spam, we unfortunately require new members' first post be approved by
the moderators before being able to post to the mailing list. (This is better
than requiring moderators to approve every member or every post individually.)

The message archive and calendar are available to the public, not just to our
members, so please be aware of this when posting messages and calendar events.
Also, members can elect to hide their email address from being displayed
anywhere within the group. This is done so people who wish to maintain their
privacy can still get/view the announcements for the area. Members who choose
this option cannot post by sending email, and must log in to the Yahoo! Groups
page to post.

These policies are open to discussion, and any grievances should be brought up
to the group owners by sending email to ayreton-owner@yahoogroups.com

Discourse on this list is requested to be kept to Ayreton-wide issues such as
discussion on the Barony process, Ayreton Carnival and any other such area wide
issues. Discourse shall be kept civil as it is entirely possible to disagree
with out being diagreeable. Personal attacks of any kind and general rudeness
are in direct violation of this policy. The decision if a violation has
occurred is entirely at the discretion of the moderators. Violators will be
given three warnings and then banned from posting to the Ayreton Yahoo! Group.
Moderators will try to give polite reminders first before giving any official
warnings, however, this is at their discretion. Banning from posting will last
for three months and then the individual banned must draft an apology letter for
their behavior that led to them being banned. They will then be put on
moderated posting status until the moderators feel they will comply with the
posting rules of this Yahoo! Group. We encourage everyone to partipate in
Ayreton-wide discussions and express freely their opinions without worry of
reprisal from the moderators. We simply ask that you do so in a chivalrous and
courteous manner and without attacking anyone.

Greetings Ayretonians,

To kick off the A&S push toward regionals in March, Ayreton has the pleasure of one of it's shining cantons hosting the Middle Kingdom Craftspersons Faire at Vanished Wood's All Souls-Royal University of the Midrealm.

This year's Faire will be different in that participants are being asked to preregister.

As of now, there is no clear way to do so, but I have made inquiries and will pass along that information as soon as I receive it.

This is a "comment-only" Faire. I highly encourage as many of our talented artisans to show and tell their wares. You do NOT have to be at your space the entire day. It can be a display or demonstration.

Stay tuned for more information.

In service,

Lady Kara Atladottir
