The Ayreton Yahoo! Group is used to post news, make announcements, and for
discussion of interest to all groups in the Chicago area. We encourage all
people of Ayreton to subscribe and receive email or digests, so although it is
not prohibited, please try to keep chatting to the local group mailing lists.

To prevent spam, we unfortunately require new members' first post be approved by
the moderators before being able to post to the mailing list. (This is better
than requiring moderators to approve every member or every post individually.)

The message archive and calendar are available to the public, not just to our
members, so please be aware of this when posting messages and calendar events.
Also, members can elect to hide their email address from being displayed
anywhere within the group. This is done so people who wish to maintain their
privacy can still get/view the announcements for the area. Members who choose
this option cannot post by sending email, and must log in to the Yahoo! Groups
page to post.

These policies are open to discussion, and any grievances should be brought up
to the group owners by sending email to ayreton-owner@yahoogroups.com

Discourse on this list is requested to be kept to Ayreton-wide issues such as
discussion on the Barony process, Ayreton Carnival and any other such area wide
issues. Discourse shall be kept civil as it is entirely possible to disagree
with out being diagreeable. Personal attacks of any kind and general rudeness
are in direct violation of this policy. The decision if a violation has
occurred is entirely at the discretion of the moderators. Violators will be
given three warnings and then banned from posting to the Ayreton Yahoo! Group.
Moderators will try to give polite reminders first before giving any official
warnings, however, this is at their discretion. Banning from posting will last
for three months and then the individual banned must draft an apology letter for
their behavior that led to them being banned. They will then be put on
moderated posting status until the moderators feel they will comply with the
posting rules of this Yahoo! Group. We encourage everyone to partipate in
Ayreton-wide discussions and express freely their opinions without worry of
reprisal from the moderators. We simply ask that you do so in a chivalrous and
courteous manner and without attacking anyone.

PLEASE FORWARD/POST WIDELY!

The Canton of Vanished Wood announces a SCRIBAL DAY OF PLAY, a mini-event devoted to the scribal arts!

We will be hosting a SCRIBAL DAY OF PLAY on Sunday March 4th from 9 am to 5 pm
at The Kathy Freeman Center at LITTLE ANGELS CENTER FOR EXCEPTIONAL CARE. The
address is 1435 Summit St. Elgin, IL 60120 and is the site we used for All
SOUL'S Elizabethan Event and Dark Ages Event. More info on the site can be
found at www.littleangels.org

Lady Mariza de la Courete (jillhughes2@...) and Mistress Katharine von Schlosserwald (knwkfw@...) and I are coordinating this event. We hope to have a "guest
celebrity" and perhaps a "goodie bag" for attendees. There will be NO SITE FEE
but we ask that DONATION be made to Little Angels. We plan to offer an
inexpensive lunch. The site is "wet" but that is probably not an issue with this
type of activity.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR SCRIBAL TEACHERS, WORKSHOP FACILITIATORS, VENDORS, and anyone else who can volunteer to make this a fun event.  Anything directly or tangentially related to scribal arts is welcome! (calligraphy, illumination, research, bookbinding, papermaking, protocol, materials, etc) Please get in touch with Mariza and Katharine if you would like to teach, facilitiate, lecture, or volunteer!

Greetings unto the Good Gentles of Ayreton,

It has almost been one year since I took on the Mantel of Baronial Pursuivant (Herald), It has been my distinct pleasure to serve the Barony in that time and I look forward to the rest of this year and my second year to come. It is wise that at this time I begin looking to the future to secure the office for the years ahead when I am gone.

To that end, I seek a Deputy.  One whom I may work with and prepare to take on this office.  During the next year, you would work closely with me to learn the Baronial Protocols that I have worked to lay out.  You will assist when possible to prepare for Courts.  You will help serve as the voice of the Baron and Baroness and will help with the submissions to the College of Heralds.

This is a fun Office and a rewarding one. You need not have any experience to become my Deputy, only the desire to learn and serve the Barony.  Even if you are only interested in the voice work or the book work, feel free to contact me.  There are ways of doing this job with a passion for just one.

If you are interested in becoming the next Deputy Pursuivant to the Barony, send me the following:
- Your Names (SCA and Mundane)
- Your full contact information
- A brief description why you would like to serve in this office
- A brief description of your SCA experience, including in heraldry, and
list offices you have held
- A brief description of your mundane job/life situation (it will be important that we can work together on non-event days)
- If you have one, an SCA Resume.  It is good to keep one listing the offices and experiences you have had, especially if you plan to move on to Higher offices in the SCA in the future.

I thank you in advance for your willingness to serve your Barony and the Dream,

Well last night the Ayreton Archers had a fantastic night shooting. We
also ran a winter challenge in order to prepare outselves for Better
War Through Archery this weekend.

So far this year, we currently have 12 people from Ayreton who have
shot the challenge. This includes 3 new people who did not shoot the
challenge last year.

Last year we had 19 people shoot the Challenge, and the average score
for Ayreton was 72. This was out of 284 archers who took part ( 50
from the Middle Kingdom) with an average score of 83.732 (including
crossbows)

This challenge we currently have 12 people, and the average score for
Ayreton is 82! This is out of 109* archers who took part (38 from the
Middle Kingdom- 8 from Sternfield) with an average score of 81.614*
(including crossbow)

However, there are 11 people who shot last year, who have not shot
yet. If you have not shot the Winter Challenge yet, please do so! Come
on out on a Weds. we promise we are a friendly bunch.

* The grand number and averages do not include the Ayreton scores from
last night, though the Ayreton Average score does.

Greetings,

I would recommend to him and anyone facing homelessness to go and get connected
with the PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) program nearest them. The NW
burbs PADS is run by Journeys. They work with those at risk of homelessness and
the homeless. There are social workers and medical care is available.

Emergency shelter is available every night of the week at different sites from
Oct until April. Guests receive a hot dinner, breakfast, and a bag lunch. The
hope center is open during the day and provides meals as well.

You do have to register at the Hope Center first to become eligible. I know this
isn't a permanent solution, but I know they can help.

Are there any fencers who would be willing to show up on Sunday?

Greetings to the Populace of the Midrealm,

Early yesterday afternoon, the Royalty of the Known World and their respective Kingdom Officers were contacted by the Board of Directors (BOD) of the SCA, Inc., to inform Us that ongoing litigation involving the SCA for many years has finally been settled. This is a good thing, as We know you can all appreciate. To many of us who have enjoyed participating in the SCA, the BOD has been nothing more than an invisible background to our daily lives. We deeply appreciate the hard work that these members have dedicated to dealing with this lawsuit.

The downside of this news is that the Society coffers are essentially empty and in need of significant financial support to help completely settle the matter. It is time for all of us to come to the aid of the Society that we love. The monies needed to allow the SCA to comply with the terms of the settlement are well over a million dollars. In order to meet this goal, the BOD is requiring that each Kingdom write a check equaling at minimum 18% of the cashable assets held in total by the Kingdom’s coffers. This total includes all assets held by all groups in each Kingdom. The BOD needs to collect and make available all funds within 10 days, so we must work quickly.

Your Royal family has been busy discussing the methods to gather these funds with Our Curia Regis, Peers of the Realm, and with many of the Groups in the Midrealm already. We are a large and bountiful kingdom, and We know that each and every one of you will back Us fully in doing everything We must do to collect these funds for the sake of our Society. We will do Our best to keep lines of communication open so that We can pass on information as We receive it.

The BOD has posted additional information and background for all the populace of the Known World to read and understand. Please go to:
http://www.sca.org/BOD/announcements/settlement.html

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding during this time.

Your Royal Family,

TRM’s EikBrandr II and Runa II

TRH’s Savaric and Julianna

In response to this current fiscal crisis and your announcement that there will be a fund raiser at the April event I would like to pledge $100  to seed this project.

In addition, I challenge each member of this Barony to pledge and give as each is financially capable.  Even if it is just $1.00, it will be a help and will show the rest of the Kingdom our mettle.

Are there plans for other methods of fund-raising as well? I honestly don't even
have a spare dollar right now (don't ask, but there are two family-mandated
plane trips this year when normally we travel about once every other year at
most), but I did think of one thing I could do.

I remember when two families' homes were fire damaged in the recent past, and
people came together to auction off goods and services as a benefit for them. It
won't help us get the funds up within the 10 days, but if anyone is up to
planning that kind of event, it could potentially help us restock our coffers
going forward. Towards that end, I have a few pottery items that I haven't sold,
from just before my elbows tendered their resignation from ceramic work. If such
an auction is done, I'd like to donate them to the cause. Just one thought, and
I'm sure that there are many other ideas floating around, but I thought I'd put
this in there.

Sarafina,

The fundraiser can count on the support of Leland and I both.  Times may be tough, but joining in this effort together, we can help to ensure that The Dream not only survives, but thrives in the future.   Just as we say at events, many hands make light work, so here many small contributions (whatever we can each muster) make a big impact.  This is a great way to remind ourselves that this is not just a noble way to make an event work, but a noble way to make life work.

Greetings All,

Your Grace, your generousity astounds and delights me. The SCA is very important to me as I have met my husband here, many dear friends, and found a way to support my fabric aquisition habit. The Middle Kingdom and SCA will need more funds beyond what they are requesting here to deal with the aftermath of the situation. We will have at least one fund raiser going on at Stone Dog to help replenish the coffers and help this game continue on.

As we pin down more details, I will make an announcement regarding what will be happening and what assistance is requires.

Thank you to everyone for stepping up.

Are there plans for other methods of fund-raising as well? I honestly don't even have a spare dollar right now (don't ask, but there are two family-mandated plane trips this year when normally we travel about once every other year at most), but I did think of one thing I could do.

I remember when two families' homes were fire damaged in the recent past, and people came together to auction off goods and services as a benefit for them. It won't help us get the funds up within the 10 days, but if anyone is up to planning that kind of event, it could potentially help us restock our coffers going forward. Towards that end, I have a few pottery items that I haven't sold, from just before my elbows tendered their resignation from ceramic work. If such an auction is done, I'd like to donate them to the cause. Just one thought, and I'm sure that there are many other ideas floating around, but I thought I'd put this in there.

I may sound very "Hallmark channel" right now, but I believe it one hundred percent.

Sarafina,
In response to this current fiscal crisis and your announcement that there will be a fund raiser at the April event I would like to pledge $100  to seed this project.
In addition, I challenge each member of this Barony to pledge and give as each is financially capable.  Even if it is just $1.00, it will be a help and will show the rest of the Kingdom our mettle.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Re: the Settlement
Several questions have been posed and here are the answers I have gleaned.

First, please read the http://www.sca.org/BOD/announcements/settlementFAQ.pdf.

And now, some additional answers for questions I've received from various groups:

1.  "What do we base our 18% upon?"
It is 18% of the cash on hand in the banks and CD’s as of the latest financial reports received by the Corporate treasurer.

Source:  Master Sean O'Shaughnessy, Pres. SCA, Inc

According to the information from Thorvald, KSen, that number was taken from the Exchequer Domesday reports.

Data was collected from the 2010 Consolidated Doomsday reports and the most recent Kingdom level quarterly reports to determine the estimated available cash assets held in the SCA and its subsidiaries.
    Source: http://www.sca.org/BOD/announcements/settlementFAQ.pdf

2.  "If the kingdom gets a refund from SCA, Inc, will that go back to the branches?"
If funds *can* be returned to the Kingdom, as it is hoped, then individual branches would receive a partial refund
Source:  Master Thorvald Redhair, Kingdom Seneschal, Middle Kingdom

3.  "How do we get the money to the right people?"
Each branch will need to send its contribution to its Kingdom Exchequer.
The Kingdom Exchequer will have a receipt book at Val Day and can take checks there.
Source:  SCA Kingdom of the Middle Facebook Page, posting dated 2/5/2012 by HRM EikBrandr, commentary

4.  "Can individuals contribute?"
Yes.  However, if a refund is made to the kingdom, it will *not* be made back to any individuals, only to groups.  Individual contributions will *not* be returned.  That would be against policy.  Individuals can cite those donations when/if they itemize their 2012 (next year's) taxes as it is a contribution to a 501(c)3 charitable organization.
Source:  Master Thorvald Redhair, Kingdom Seneschal, Middle Kingdom

5.  "Can we send more than 18%?"
    Yes.  That is heartily appreciated.

6.  "Can we hold fundraisers?"
Yes.  Please forward any donation to your Kingdom.

If you have more questions, please let me know.
In Service,
Caitriona MacDhonnachaidh
Midlands Seneschal

The Ayreton Angels have decided we would like to donate half of our funds to the cause, but as this money was given to us for specific use by the Cantons, we ask your permission to do so.  If there are any objections please let us know within the next two days.

Dear Angels,

You asked if there are any objections to contributing part of the Angel funds to the lawsuit settlement.

No objections from me.

That is a generous and noble offer. This is far above and beyond the call of duty, and I honor your generosity.  However, please keep back sufficient money for the Ayreton Angels to continue their good mission for this summer, also.

Best Wishes,

I would check the legal ramifications of using monies sent for a specific purpose; there seem to be legalities about accounting practices for non-profits that forbid such practices. However, donations given for THIS specific purpose could be used for the settlement.  Orry Guerin

I'm told from the Society Treasurer that there are many levels of 'dedicated funds'.

The most restrictive way is when the donor specifically states in writing what the funds are to be used for (Restricted Funds). We cannot accept the funds and do something else in that case.

We don't go that far, although it is good to try to keep dedicated funds going toward the dedicated purpose.

We have already sent in $900 (the check was put in the mail today). We can, of course, send in more later, but we should have a meeting to discuss any disbursements from dedicated funds that aren't included in the fund's stated purpose. We have enough in the General Fund to match any amount from a dedicated fund.

Ghita

Greetings!

We have discussed this, and we both have concerns about Angels funds. So what we will do is cover their promise out of our Regalia fund. We will also match them, to contribute $400 extra beyond what is coming out of the general fund.  We’re less likely to need the Regalia fund imminently, than the Angels fund, thanks to everyone’s support.

One other notation is that there is an effort to make a donation link available via the sca.org site for individuals wanting to contribute directly. This should (in theory) also afford them the opportunity to get a receipt (important for those of us who itemize our taxes). We should know more on that within a couple of days. In addition, for those going to Val Day this weekend, there will be a number of donation opportunities there, where receipts will also be available.

We are both gratified at the outpouring of support that has been expressed here and on other lists during this process. While none of us is happy about the situation, it does show of what metal we’re made as a community when we can come together in support of the Dream.
