Greetings,

Sorry for the cross-posting.

The weather reports indicate we will have a good chance of rain and thunderstorms this Sunday. Also, it seems that the entire building (Ida Noyes Hall) is reserved for the day, even though any reserved activities will have ended by 12 noon. Apaprently, the building is reserved for hours after the scheduled activities to accomodate teardown. There is no guarantee that any rooms will be available by 2PM.

So, while we may be able to use the Courtyard in case of rain, be advised to expect a small turnout in case of rain/t-storms.

Danke.

Salutations to the Mighty Midlands from Caitriona Mac Dhonnachaidh,

Good Gentles,
I have spoken briefly to People Who Know (tm) about what Their Royal Majesties like to see in an Award Recommendation.

1.  ANYONE can write a recommendation for ANY award!  Even if you don't have an AOA, if you think someone is worthy, don't hesitate to let the Crown know!  As much as TRM would like to meet and know everyone, it is not feasible.  That's why we, the populace, need to make recommendations.
2.  Details are helpful!  Telling the Crown when and what a person did is better than saying they helped at events.  It doesn't have to be specific dates, but if the thing that happened is specific to an event, adding that detail brings life to the recommendation.  And, say you're recommending someone for teaching, tell when and what they taught.
3.  Beyond, that, just recommend early and often!  Court lists are given to the Signet about a month in advance, so getting a recommendation in six weeks before an event is very helpful!
4.  Go back in to the award recommendation and make updates to outstanding recs.  Add new information and add new events to each recommendation as it becomes available.
5.  It is all our responsibility to show our appreciation for the work each of us do.  Share the love!

Have a great weekend.  I hope to see lots of people at the Middle Kingdom Cook's Collegium this weekend and Crown next weekend.  Enjoy!

In Your Service,
Caitriona

Good gentles, Crown Tournament still REALLY needs volunteers to act as personal retainers and guards .  For those not familiar with the roles, retainers 'shadow' His/Her Majesties individually, hold things for them, run errands or messages, fetch people if requested, etc -- basically, act as personal assistant for your shift.  Guards stand outside the Royalty Room and announce those who wish to visit the King or Queen, plus keep unknown persons out if all the royal party is away (i.e., protect their stuff).  I am told these are GREAT royals for you to try such duties (i.e., reasonable, NICE!).  Ideally, we need two people for each shift, for each duty.  I'll settle for one person for every shift.  The current schedule is shown below, showing shifts available (caveat: a couple pendings are still up in the ai r on exact times).  Contact me by email if you can (please!) assist---or phone, if you prefer: 317-439-5194.

Please share this request with other Sternfelders not on this list, plus cross-post to other SCA lists.  Thanks!  --liesl

Good  Greetings to all our SCA family and friends,

The  Barony of Seleone needs your help!!  We are having a book fair/fund
raiser at the end of this month at our  local Barnes and Noble. With your
help, and at no additional cost to you, we can  make this fund raiser a great
success.  All you need to do is shop in-store or on-line from October 30th
through  November 3rd, using our Book Fair number of 10317493. This is at any
Barnes and Noble in the country. Buy what you would normally buy at Barnes
and  Noble, use the Book Fair number and the Barony of Seleone will get a
percentage  of what you purchase.   Tell  your cashier, before they ring up
your purchase, that you want your items to  count towards our book fair and
then provide them with the number 10317493. We  are hoping to get all of our
SCA family to participate in this to increase our  success.  To sweeten your
interest,  the Barony of Seleone has decided to give to our Kingdom of Gleann
Abhann, half  of what is raised during this book fair. So you will not just
be helping  Seleone, but raising funds for Gleann Abhann. So, please jump
on this  bandwagon!! Let all you know, both in and out of the SCA about this
book fair.  All each person needs is the book fair number!!!!! Spread the
work, let’s find  out how much we can raise this year and maybe next year, we
can have an even  larger book fair. Please fell free to forward this missive
to any SCA group or  gentle, as well as, any others who may be interested
in helping us out.  Let’s put a scare into Barnes and Noble  and show them
just how many readers there are in the SCA!!

Hello, sorry for taking up bandwidth, but I thought some of you might like to know about this:

On Monday night I’m holding a house concert where an old and dear friend will play.  He’s a harpist from Boulder Colorado – and he’s really good J  There’s some links below to his music.  He plays mostly Celtic and classical music.  The gathering will start at 6:30 and he’ll play from 7 PM until 10 PM (with a break or two) at 246 N Wilmette, Westmont IL.  Please come and listen to some beautiful music and throw a little money in a hat for him.

I’ll even feed you!  I’m planning on making some munchies plus soup.

MK Cooks' Collegium - Thank You All!

Greetings from Master Philip White,

As the event steward the Middle Kingdom Cooks' Collegium there are many people
that I would like to thank.

The Collegium's staff and volunteers did everything they could to help make the
event run as effortlessly as possible while providing an entertaining occasion
for all of our guests.

Please be patient with me for the length of this post. Please also forgive any
oversights or incorrect spellings.

Thank you to Their Excellencies Ayreton, Henry of Exeter and Nadezda ze
Zastrizl, for their patronage of this event as it was hosted within Their lands.

Acelina was our registration coordinator. She and her staffed helped about 100
attendees from at least four Kingdoms come through gate. Some of who were at
their very first SCA function. Thanks to her and her team including Marissa who
spent most of the day helping her.

Nicholaa coordinated the potluck for our evening meal. Considering how many
moving parts that job involved she did an excellent job. Thank you. And of
course thanks to everyone who made a tasty dish to share with all of us. There
were over 40 feet of food and another 8 feet of drinks.

Our lunch and the coffee house were provided by Fox Vale under the direction of
Kara. Thanks to her and her team with helping feed the caffeine cravings of our
early birds and giving people an option on site for food without having to leave
site. Her staff was great!

Thanks of course to our many teachers. You are who made this event possible!
Thank you Aasa, Alys Katharine, Ann, Berengaria, Bojei, Caitriona, Edouard,
Elayne, Elizabeth, Eoghan, Felice, Gianetta, Gavin, Giles, Gwyneth, Hauviette,
Helewyse, Iago, Johann, Kara, Kateryn, Katherine, Kiritsubo, Nicholaa, Raphael,
Richard, Sarra, Suzanne, Tacit, and Verena. Just a few of them had real life
intervene so that they could not make it the day of the event but we were glad
to have them volunteer all the same. Special thanks to Guthar as our guest
instructor and key note speaker.

Thank you Alys for your help in proof reading the event promotional materials.
(She is probably cringing now wishing I had had her proof this email too! lol)

Thank you Sabine for your help on the floor plans. This really helped with our
questions about accessibility and event paring.

Many thanks to Elias for his excellent work as out webminister. He was very easy
to communicate with and did a great job of understanding what materials I was
asking be posted to our website. I believe a good part of our success was due to
having more information up early and with easy access. Thank you for making that
happen.

Thank you Felice for all your work on compiling our teachers' biographical
information. Your experience was a perfect fit for adding something special to
the event.

Thanks to Twm for organizing the walking tour Sunday after the event. It was a
great way to help people extend their weekend and find something else to get out
of their trip to Chicagoland.

Thank you Katherine as the site liaison. You were able to answer so many
questions that people normally don't have to deal with. Imagine a combination of
animal slaughtering, laptop projections, elevator access, and digging holes in
the ground. All of this and she is also the Canton's Seneschal. Her help we
truly invaluable and I feel honored to have worked alongside her.

Our crash space coordinator was Julienne. Thank you to all the people who were
willing to open up their homes. We had many people who came to the Canton for
the Collegium from all over the Known World. Your generosity
made their trips more possible. Thank you for being such great hosts.

Our event set up crew included Katherine, Elias, Elisot, Gunthar, Elizabeth,
Nicholaa, Adam and others. The morning of the event went so much more smoothly
because of this team of early birds

We had to reset the main hall for our evening meal. Thank you to everyone who
helped reset from day camps and merchants to place tables and chairs for our pot
luck so that the transition went smoothly and quickly.

Our site clean up crew was extensive. Many hands make light work. We were able
to close out site even earlier than expected which was very much appreciated by
all. Thank you!

The Canton of Vanished Wood officers and populace played an important part in
making this event even happen. They adopted the Collegium after a last minute
scheduling conflict even though their annual event All Souls (please come to
that too!) was scheduled just two weeks later. They are an amazing group and a
pleasure to work with. I am not sure another set of people would have been able
to pull it off with such ease.

Now, I have most likely let one or two of you slip past my notice. Please do not
think that I appreciate your service any less. It is my lack for missing you –
or you are just exceptionally good at being modest. Hopefully I will catch you
later, recognize your face, and be able to thank you in person.

Many people made this event happen and I am thankful for the Canton, friends in
Ayreton, and the rest of the
Kingdom for making it such a wonderful time.

Your Servant to Command,
~ philip white

Dear all:

PLEASE CIRCULATE/REPOST WIDELY!!

This should be posted to the All Soul's website very soon, but I've been getting a lot of requests from people for the finished schedule (SORRY for the delay!) so I am also circulating it widely via email.  The schedule is attached; full class descriptions are already available on the All Soul's event page at http://www.vanishedwood.org/all-souls.php.

MKHSS is shaping up to be a great day for scribal and heraldic classes; we have 22 hours of classes on all things heraldic and scribal scheduled!  We also have 2 hours of general A&S classes scheduled.  There's something for everyone, being taught by some of the best heralds and scribes in the kingdom!  Plus, we'll have a heraldic consulting table staffed for most of the day for those gentles seeking help with name/device submissions, as well as an open scribal roundtable, where scribes can work on/display scrolls and get Q&A help from scribal experts.  Come one, come all!  The event site also has suggestions on where to stay (local hotels), as well as a crash space contact.  All Soul's also will feature merchants, children's activities, a "jaguar hunt" heavy weapons tournament, a music concert, and one of the best feasts to be had anywhere in the Midrealm.

Hope to see you at this exciting event!

This sounds like a fun read, and it'll be good to see the SCA depicted as a
society of those who admire courtesy, honor, and education, instead of just a
pack of costumed weirdos, like we usually get painted. Let us know again when
the book comes out in paperback, will you? It seems a nice thing to sit back and
read on a lazy Saturday afternoon, and I'd like to support one of our own.

Also, I hope I have your permission to forward this to other email lists, such
as other kingdoms and the Newcomers list, and so on.

It's a fictional story with fictional characters, but it depicts the SCA accurately and positively. Hope you'll check it out, and also spread the word! The novel is currently out in ebook format and will be out in trade paperback in a few months.

This sounds like a fun read, and it'll be good to see the SCA depicted as a society of those who admire courtesy, honor, and education, instead of just a pack of costumed weirdos, like we usually get painted. Let us know again when the book comes out in paperback, will you? It seems a nice thing to sit back and read on a lazy Saturday afternoon, and I'd like to support one of our own.

Also, I hope I have your permission to forward this to other email lists, such as other kingdoms and the Newcomers list, and so on.

In 1885, Elizabeth Wardle--a friend of the noted medievalists William
Morris--saw the original Bayeux Embroidery and decided that Britain
did a copy. Enlisting the aid of someone who could dye the yarn to
proper tones and an army of embroiderers, she did just that, creating
an accurate embroidered copy of the Embroidery. It was widely shown,
but ran out of funds for the tour in Reading. Reading bought it for
300 pounds. In the late 1990s, it was cleaned and put on exhibition
at the Reading Museum. It is, quite frankly, astounding and even more
so when you realize how little known it is!

I knew of the copy but had thought it further inland, but pals in
Reading let me know it was here and asked if I wanted to see it. As
you might imagine, I jumped at the chance! They allow cameras in the
museum, so you can well imagine that I took advantage of it. My only
regret is that I didn't photograph every panel, but a pamphlet I
bought at the museum had a photo of the whole thing.

The yarns were dyed with the same pigments probably used in the
original, so the colors of the piece are probably close to what those
of the original had been. The method of embroidery was the same as
that used on the original, and Miss Julie spent a lot of time with
her head against the glass, gazing on the actual stitches. We have
uploaded some of the photos at:

Seeing it was such a pleasure that I had to share it! And I was just
so happy that I spent the money for a new camera which did a better
job than any older one ever did!

Thanks for the thanks (Depart of Redundancy Department...)

Can any one use a good condition microwave cart? It has become superfluous in my new space. You pick up, in Rogers Park/West Ridge. Contact me off list if any interest. Thanks, Ardena  (aka Amy Woolard)

Synagogues were targeted this time, but all houses of worship in Chicago should be on alert for suspicious packages. http://www.wgntv.com/news/wgntv-jewish-institutions-on-high-alert-suspicious-packages-oct30,0,6183535.story Please contact your imams, preachers, priests, and the other leaders in your religious communities and make them aware of this incident. As the saying goes, "my butt today, your butt tomorrow." (G*D forbid.) I hate it when synagogues are targeted, and I also hate it when anyone else's religion gets the attention of people with explosives on their hands. Be careful, everyone.

Greetings all!

Space is being made available to me for a baronial court at next weekends' All Souls event. As his excellency will be unavailable that day, I would request business that anyone would like to bring to court be addressed to me so that we can schedule accordingly.

Also, as I anticipate this being a brief court, I would like to invite any heralds who are perhaps a little on the new side, that would like to herald for me during that court, to contact me in advance.

Thank you,

Baroness Nadezda

Aaron and I would like to serve.  We have before.  Mundane names are Amy and Wayne and we are from Ravenslake.  This year we are official SCA members and have our blue card.  I am proud of that one.  Brigitte.
