Hello,

I need to cancel the TGS Wednesday Scribe Nights until May 5, due to a
work-related training schedule conflict.

When we resume the regular schedule, we plan on practicing gold leaf techniques.
Please consider joining us in May if you are interested.

Sincerely,

Greetings!

Unfortunately, we only have this Sunday March 7th reserved for fighter practice at Ida Noyes, University of Chicago.  The rest of March we are out of luck at this time.  If the weather is cooperative we could, in theory, practice outside but it is March and this is Chicago.  :)

This would be a good time to do some pell drills and armor repairs.

Henry of Exeter

Hello all (especially scribes!) --

Just got this info from the Met /Cloisters: they're going to display
the Belles Heures of the Duc du Berry, unbound, all the pages at once.
Since the book is usually bound, they can only show two pages at a
time. Fantastic opportunity, if anyone is going to New York in the
near future. (see below)

Annora de Sylveastan

"The Art of Illumination: The Limbourg Brothers and the Belles
Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry"
Through June 13
The Belles Heures (1405-1408/9) of Jean de Berry, a treasure
of The Cloisters collection, is one of the most celebrated and
lavishly illustrated manuscripts in the United States. Because
the work is currently unbound, it is possible to exhibit all
of its illuminated pages as individual leaves, a unique
opportunity never to be repeated. See a special online feature
for more information, including sponsorship credits. Take in
films, gallery talks, and a subscription lecture related to
the exhibition. Rent the accompanying Audio Guide and tour the
show with experts leading the way.

"The Mourners: Medieval Tomb Sculptures from the Court of
Burgundy"
Through May 23
The renovation of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon has
provided an opportunity for the unprecedented loan of the
alabaster mourner figures from the tomb of John the Fearless,
Duke of Burgundy, and his wife, Margaret of Bavaria. Each of
the statuettes is approximately 16 inches high. For more
information, including sponsorship credits, see the online
preview. Enjoy films, gallery talks, and family programs held
in conjunction with the exhibition.

http://email.metmuseum.org/a/aBLjYdXARJhWhB79M5aADIGLT0U/met58

These two special exhibitions share an intriguing connection:
Jean de France, duc de Berry, was the uncle of John the
Fearless, Duke of Burgundy.

We're having Period Cooks Night on the 1st Friday of the month in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago.  There's a different theme each month. Some meetings we plan to invite a Guest Chef to come and demonstrate/show us how a certain item is cooked and learn from that experienced person.

Normally, each person attending brings a period recipe (from the theme we've chosen for that month) and the ingredients to cook the dish, but we all get together and cook it together and then we sample all the dishes that night together!  We comment on them, take notes, and make suggestions on how to improve them.

GREY GARGOYLES/AYRETON A&S AFTERNOONS

For the past several months, we've had a growing number of people showing up at Ayreton combined fighter practice on Sundays at Ida Noyes to do casual A&S, gab, et cetera. We hope to begin introducing some beginners tutorials in various arts

of great interest to the Ayreton populace as a whole.   Timing coincides with the Ayreton fighter practices.

Greetings to the populous of Ayreton,

Due to a scheduling conflict at the normal Tree-Girt-Sea meeting location, the next Ayreton business meeting will be held March 14th at the home of Robyyan and Fern.

Phone Number:
(773) 764-1920
Address: 2506 W. Morse Ave., Chicago , IL 60645

Robyyan sends the following information, "...there is plenty of on-street parking in this area, and that we're only a block from Western Ave. and the 49B bus, and not far from Touhy and the Pace 290.  Useful landmarks for people driving are on Western Ave., turn onto Morse between the Harley Davidson dealer and McDonalds.  And it would be helpful if people were to bring folding chairs -- we may run out if a lot of people come."

Thank you Nadezda for finding an alternate site and thank you Robyyan and Fern for offering your home.

I'll send out an agenda for the meeting early next week.

On another note, there's no new developments on the progress of the charter and petition beyond that the documents have been sent to their royal majesties.

Response needed for possible demo:

Please see the following email from the coordinator of the Mensa Halloweem
event. In 2009, I did a presentation on the life of an Elizabethan townsperson
from a first person perspective, with Baroness Sarafina also attending to assist
(because Cynthia only wanted 1-2 people presenting last year), and the room was
packed. Cynthia was very happy with us. Now she wants a bigger SCA presence.

Greetings, Kerri-Ellen.

I know it seems as though October is a long way off, but we're already
working on some of the key elements of the the big Mensa weekend at the end of
October.

We had talked about the possibility of staging a mini-Ren Faire on the
Friday of the event (Oct. 29 this year), with a range of displays, artists,
vendors, etc. As with last year, the compensation would again be free admission
for the day of your choice at our event, plus for vendors, anything they earn
selling their wares, and of course a chance to tell people about SCA and its
events, with the possibility of soliciting more interested parties.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you think we can plan on having this
event. I do understand that you'd have to discuss this with others, but this
would be one of the weekend's major events, so we do want to know if it will be
happening.

I hope you'll be joining us again--and bringing your friends.

I look forward to hearing from you.

As winter yields to spring, the Dragon begins to stir from its winter slumber. Its warm breath calls to mind the hot winds of Pennsic to come, and we its children, must dutifully prepare for war.

Soon, many of our kinsmen will trek south to Gulf Wars, honing their steel and their skills in preparation for the campaign season. These are the first waves in the rising tide of war. Now is the time to prepare! Now is the time to choose whether to be swept under by that tide, or to master it, that it's current might bear us to glory! The summer will pass in a blink of the Dragon’s eye. But for now, those eyes are open, and they are turning to the East.

The command staff and I have been busy laying our plans and we have set a good many things in place.  Yet all of our planning and work mean less than nothing without you.  So gather your crew and mark your calendars. The time to act is upon us!  Rapier Champions Team tryouts approach. Melee plans and hay bales are being ordered.  Will you be there to make the difference? You are the flesh and blood of the Dragon, and without you, it cannot soar.

This summer, as the army of the Dragon grows and trains, let’s remember to enjoy ourselves. If you are the MIC for an event this summer, I strongly encourage you to contact your regional commander or myself.  We would be happy to help you with your event and can offer to organize an afternoon game if you’d like. I don’t want every event to only focus on preparing for Pennsic, instead, I want to encourage more people to come out and fight as a part of a group with their friends.  I do not want us to get so focused on winning the war that we loose sight of having fun all season long.

But…..

I think we all remember what happened the last time the rapiers of the Tyger and the Dragon were crossed, and come August there will be many who think the Dragon’s teeth have been pulled.  With your help, my job is to show them just how mistaken they truly are!  The challenge lies before us, and renown is promised to the victor.  Are you ready to seize it?

Draco Invictus!
Anton
Lt General of Rapier

Some folks I've talked in the past have expressed an interest in learning blacksmithing.

Here is a link to a location which offeres some really good classes.  I've taken about 5 classes from this instructor and I highly recomend him.

http://www.fineline.org/classes/mgblacksmith.html

These classes are very challenging and very fun.  While the classes use modern gas forges, the instructor also has knowledge of period techniques.  In one class I forge welded a wrought iron period axe (out of 90 old reclaimed iron scraps) which was based on a drawing from an actual 600 year old axe I found in a book that the instructor happened to have with him.

He's brought knives he's made and they are jaw dropping.

He had a knife made from forge welded chunks of meteorite.

He had one with an petrified foscil in the pomel and amber embelishments.

He had a period looking blade which was made from gorgeous damascus.

His knives have been featured in national knife smithing magazines and he's a wealth of knowledge.

Again, I highly recommend his classes for anyone from beginners to advanced.

Feel free to contact me off list if you have any questions.

BLACKSMITH TOOL MAKING AND FORGING
One of the tests for an up and coming Blacksmith would be to make his own tools like hammers, tongs chisels and punches. The ability to take basic steel and work it into the tools of your trade was and still is a badge of honor. Learn to make and forge some of your own tools, as well as heat-treating processes and tool steels. In this 2-day workshop we will explore different types of forging processes used to produce functional tools. Some possible projects will include, hammers, tongs chisels and punches.
Days: Saturdays: May 1 & 8; 9 AM - 5 PM

BLACKSMITHING TOUCH MARK AND FINE TOOLS
In this class we will be making several small but very important tools for the blacksmith, jeweler, or tinsmith. The Touch-mark was a big thing for the Blacksmith. Not only did his mark serve to identify his personal tools, but it identified all the items he produced. As the consummate craftsman, the blacksmith would stand behind his products. If a person brought back a tool or other metal item that needed repair, the blacksmith could instantly tell if he produced it and would fix it straight away. We will make at least one touch mark in this class.
Other tools we will be making are small metal chasing tools and texturing tools and chisels, useful for any metalsmith who wants to do fine work in steel or other metals. We will have some various metals available such as copper and brass to practice on. Who should attend: anyone from previous blacksmithing, knife forging classes, or jewelry classes. This class will be fun for the intermediate as well as the advanced metal worker.

Days: Thursdays: July 1 - 15; 6:30 - 9 PM

IRON FORGING BLACKSMITHING
Learn the fine art of forge welding and techniques of blacksmithing, as well as some advanced processes and materials. In this one day workshop, we will explore different types of metal working processes used to produce decorative and functional items in iron. Work will focus on organic shapes in iron and copper. Some possible projects will include metal punches, door knockers, candleholders, and animal head letter opener.

Days: Saturday: April 10; 9 AM - 5 PM

KNIFE FORGING - METAL WORKING
In this class you will make a Knife with decorative exotic wood or antler handle. We will forge weld patterned Damascus blades as well as study traditional Japanese blade forging/heat treatment. This class is designed to be challenging to the intermediate and advanced Blacksmith/Bladesmith.
Learn the basic tools, techniques used in Bladesmithing and handle work in this 4 day class we will explore different types of processes used to produce functional knives. We will have many different exotic woods and other materials available for purchase like brass copper and nickel silver.
Days: Fridays: June 18 & 25; 5 PM - 9 PM
Days: Saturdays: June 19 & 26; 9 AM - 5 PM

Good citizens of Ayreton, I send you greetings!

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the meeting tonight -- my mother is visiting from out of town, and we are taking her out to celebrate her birthday!  I hope everyone has a fun and productive meeting.

The only thing I have to say for my chronicler report is that the April newsletter is coming up fast!  Please send me anything you'd like to have published.  We stated that this newsletter would have a theme of "Baronial Wish List"... what do you want us to do/have/be once we become a barony?  I welcome any articles, paragraphs, or sentences about this!

Some other ideas for content:

-- If you're an officer, please send an officer report!
-- If you're a member or leader of a guild or A&S group, tell us what you're working on!
-- If you've attended an event recently, please give us a taste of what you experienced!
-- If you're working on an A&S project for this Spring, or you're delving into a research project, tell us what you're discovering!
-- If you're thinking about combat strategy or tactics, share what you're learning or planning!
-- Anything else that you'd like to share with the citizens of Ayreton

I look forward to your contributions -- I love having a robust newsletter chock full of the vibrant doings of Ayreton.

Submission deadline is end of March.

Hi, all--

Just a brief bit of news from your local rapier marshal:

In response to recent concerns about rubber tips failing surprisingly
quickly/suddenly, the Society Rapier Marshal decided today that all tips (rapier
and dagger) shall have a flat metal piece between the tip and the rubber blunt
(previously, daggers required no "spacer", and rapiers could use either metal or
leather).

The exceptions to this are: if your sword has a metal stopper welded or
otherwise attached to the end, then that counts and you don't need anything else
between it and the rubber blunt. If you're using an experimental Darkwood tip,
you don't need to add anything to that, either.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me, or any other local rapier
marshal (Anton, Kai, Tedesco, Logos, Terry, Adrian, Alexander, Emm, Cecil,
Andrew, etc, etc, etc...)

ROKKEHEALDEN SCRIPTORIUM

The Scriptorium is composed of all skill levels.  The Scriptorium is open to anyone who is interested in any aspect of the scribal arts. You do NOT have to be a member of the shire to participate in the Scriptorium.  You don't have to be an artist. You don't have to paint.  You don't have to draw.  You don't even have to do calligraphy.  Experiment and do what you like.  You don't have to buy anything.  We are a friendly group and share our supplies. Of course, if you get hooked like we did, you'll want to get your own supplies.  From time to time we hold classes to teach various aspects of calligraphy and illumination.  About the only request (per se) is you be active, encouraging, positive to others and yourself.

We are confirmed for the following dates at the Oak Brook Library:

Thurs. Mar. 25
Thurs. Apr. 1
Thurs. April 15 (moot) NOT the usual 4th Thursday of the month

FRIDAY ACTIVITIES

NEEDLEWORK/FIBER ARTS NIGHT

Every third Friday of the month, 6 pm - 10 pm
Bring a project to work on or the willingness to learn something new.
For more information, email: gschneid@....

PERIOD COOKS NIGHT

We're having Period Cooks Night on the 1st Friday of the month in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago.  There's a different theme each month. Some meetings we plan to invite a Guest Chef to come and demonstrate/show us how a certain item is cooked and learn from that experienced person.

Normally, each person attending brings a period recipe (from the theme we've chosen for that month) and the ingredients to cook the dish, but we all get together and cook it together and then we sample all the dishes that night together!  We comment on them, take notes, and make suggestions on how to improve them.

For more info please contact PeriodCooksNight@...

GREY GARGOYLES/AYRETON A&S AFTERNOONS

For the past several months, we've had a growing number of people showing up at Ayreton combined fighter practice on Sundays at Ida Noyes to do casual A&S, gab, et cetera. We hope to begin introducing some beginners tutorials in various arts
and sciences during these meets soon, and I think many of these will be
of great interest to the Ayreton populace as a whole.   Timing coincides with the Ayreton fighter practices.
