Dear Aryeton,

What a fantastic event! From the earliest set-up staff to the final clean-up crew, this event was a testament to the amazing level of service and cooperation among the members of the Barony of Aryeton! Everyone helped, and everyone did a great job!

Thank you so very much! We have set a standard that other baronies will find difficult to match!

Myself, I am still exhausted after this event. It was wonderful, but I am exhausted. My family visitors left today (on separate flights, so it required two trips to O'Hare to drop them off!) and Robyyan and I are trying to put the house back in order.

As soon as I have one more night's sleep, I will be able to give you a report from the autocrat's point of view. Wulfram was amazingly efficient to tell us about the finances right away, and it's very nice to know so quickly about the financial success!

Thank you, thank you, thank you. This was wonderful!

Yours in Service to Aryeton,

Fern

Greetings,

I confirmed that for the rest of the month of October, the Sunday practices
at Ida Noyes are going to be outside. This means while we have access to the
restrooms, the practices will be weather dependent.

In November, we have indoor space again.

I know I mentioned to a couple of people during the 40th event that I
would be throwing this out here:

The Elv Av Tiden (Proto-Incipient Canton of Carraig Ban) group out of
the Elgin area is looking at having a demo at the Elgin Community
College next Thursday (10/15) at 4pm.

One thing we are short on is a couple of fighters. The demo is only
an hour long and I realize 4pm is rough time for most people to show
up at - but if anyone is free and can drop by for some fighting, be
willing to talk about your armor and the SCA I would greatly
appreciate it.
Or if you just want to hit me with a piece of rattan ... that works
just as well.

If you have any questions - or suggestions - or random comments please
drop me a email.

I'm no fighter, and have no weapons or armor, but I'm very interested
and would kind of like to attend this, having never attended an SCA
demo before. Is anyone welcome, or only the college community?

I also don't have transportation of my own. If anyone in Chicago is
attending this, could I snag a ride with you? I'm in West Rogers Park,
but could meet downtown. Gas money and/or snack, I'll gladly bring as
recompense for your automotive generosity. For this, off-list replies
are probably best.

Unto the people of Ayreton, I Aethelwulf of Dover, send greetings. At the 40
Year/Coronation celebration myself and other Brothers of the great household of
the Dark Horde had the honor of serving the people of the Middle and their guest
at our tavern. Fun was had, and the food(from reports back) was good.

It was decided that we would give, in support of the new barony, 1/4 of our
profits to your Regalia fund. For as the SCA prospers so dose the Horde.

Hi Seamus,

We are not fighters (yet) but we have been looking for SCA folks in the Elgin
area.  We could probably come to your demo in garb and such at least and talk
about the SCA. Would definitely like to make contact with you all!

Where at the college will you be?  Any possibility of setting up a fighter
practice out there (at ECC) on a regular basis?

Please let us know.

The HUB is the location of the demo (The Hub Lounge) and the rough
plan is meet in SRC parking (in front of admissions) at 3:30pm and we
can walk down the main walk way of the school to the HUB. There is
work already in progress to have an indoor practice at the ECC this
winter - the demo is part of the effort to recruit some of the student
base to come out and play with us.

Lady Colleen is our coordinator for this Demo and she can be reached

If there are any other questions I will reply off-list in order to

I would reply off-list, but I really hope to get responses from more
than just good Seamus here. Please respond off-list if you're willing
to give a ride

Looking at the Google Maps page (http://tinyurl.com/ydtzy99), I can
get from my nearest cross-street (California and Devon, Chicago, IL)
to the National St. Metra in roughly 2.5 hours, which is a long trip
but not outside the realm of possibility. However, after that, it's an
8-minute drive by car from the Metra station to the ECC. Is there
anyone intends to drive from the general vicinity of the Metra station
to the ECC, that might be willing to give a lift in exchange for gas
money? Better yet, is anyone within Chicago itself intending to drive
to this demo, who wouldn't mind a tag-along?

Greetings to all,

Please be aware that the name of the Fall Crown Hotel site has changed. It is no longer the Ramada Inn, but is now the Grand Hotel. They just changed hands and no longer have the Ramada sign up at the hotel. For on-line directions with a map-quest or similar, I expect the Ramada name is still listed. Otherwise, all other info originally posted in the Pale is still good, and any hotel reservations with the Ramada will still be  honored.

I would really appreciate it if this information could be cross-posted on the Chivalry and Laurel lists, as well as any other appropriate lists.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I've got a friend that I've been trying to bring to SCA events since
May, but she won't go camping. I see that the upcoming Crown
Tournament is being held in a hotel, and I've emailed just now to ask
her if she's interested. Is that a good event for a first-timer,
though? Some events are better than others, I know.

Those familiar with Jewish law: She and I both are traditionally-
observant Jews, meaning we won't be able to spend money from Friday
sundown to Saturday sundown, presumably during the whole event. Whom
should I ask about pre-paying for event admission? Is there anything
we might need to carry with us?

Crown Tournament is definitely great for 'newbies'. It is our bi-annual (2x a year) gathering where our next Prince and Princess are chosen. Six months later at Coronation, they 'step up' to become King and Queen. Thusly, the cycle repeats...

There is a lot of pomp and circumstance when the combatants and their consorts enter the competition. Then, lots of very well fought bouts one-on-one until at the end of day we are down to the Final Four. These are the most exciting of the bouts with the final Two duking it out for the Crown.

Of course, while that is the main activity of the day, there are also classes, and shopping and other fun things to do (just meeting new friends is a favorite!).

Many events allow a pre-registration option, please check the website for the cut-off date (it's probably VERY soon). You may also be able to pre-purchase lunch and/or feast. However, you should plan to feed yourself somehow in the event you cannot buy tickets ahead of time. Keeping a cooler in your room or vehicle may be an option.

Have a great time, and hope you and your friend can come and join the festivities!

In service,
Jale

Subject: [Ayreton] October Crown -- good for a newbie?

Thanks so much for your reply! It's very helpful. Sounds like this is
a great tournament to bring my friend Adina to experience her first
SCA event.

Both of us are strictly observant Jews, so we're used to bringing a
cooler and a crock pot with us wherever we go traveling away from
home. Food won't be a problem, though I'm wondering if it's possible
to attend a feast without eating (and thus without paying for food)
just to see what a feast is like. I've never been to one.

I'll look into pre-registration. Good idea, thanks! I really hope
she's interested in going, because if she's not, I can't go either.
She's got a car, and I wouldn't have a way of getting there without a
ride from someone.

Is court held at a crown tournament? I'm guessing so, because that
would be the place where the heirs are formally crowned and
designated, and others are recognized. Yes?

YAY. I've only seen court once, but I loved it. I hope my friend decides she wants to come.

Howdy All!

Crown Tourney will be upon us in just a few days.

I know many of us are still tired for the hard work from this past weekend. But,
if you are able to make Crown, please consider volunteering for a few hours.

There will be plenty of opportunities to help out. And, the more people that can
pitch in, the more fun we all can have. We've just seen how well it works with
Forty Year!

Thanks,
~philip

It's great and all that the Baron and Baroness know what WE expect of THEM. But
what do THEY expect of US.

Good citizens of Ayreton I send you greetings!

Congratulations everyone on a wonderful event!  It was a day filled with amazing sights and experiences.

While your stories are still fresh in your mind, how about writing up a paragraph or two for the Zephyr?  I'm putting it together this weekend and would love to have some writing about 40 Year/Coronation.

Please let me know if you've got something you want to share!

Thanks,

Dear Ayreton,

The MK HIstory Project was able to collect a lot of photos and stories last weekend. I haven't reviewed them yet,but I'm sure it now contains a huge treasury of great stuff.

However, there's one more photo that I would like to add to the historic archives of the XL event--a photo of the volunteers!

Or maybe two more photos--the event volunteers and a general everybody-in-the-barony photo.

What do you think about trying to fill the gap tonight at the Ayreton meeting? I'll bring my camera to get the biggest group photo possible. Maybe we can all wear XL T-shirts, since we won't be in garb?

See you tonigh!

Last minute note on getting there--for anyone travelling from the South via
I-90, outbound Lawrence Ave. exits are under construction, and therefore closed.
The easiest option is probably to exit at I-94 (so stay to the right at the
split) and head west(left). Pick up Milwaukee Ave. and follow it (right turn) to
Giddings. If you park in the Hoyne bank lot, please do not block the drive
through/atm lanes.

As for pot luck options, brewers--it'd be ok to bring your latest samples.

And again, contributions for the church food pantry would be appreciated.
