Hi all,

Thanks for discussing the Plainfield Fest/Plymouth Congregational Church demo opportunity at the last Ayreton meeting!  As a reminder, this is a request from a local church for their fundraiser during this outdoor summer festival.

So far, I have heard from one person tentatively interested in attending.  Since it's about a month away and the organizer is still in the early stages of planning the activities, I would like to give her a firm answer by the end of the week so that she knows whether she should plan around us.  She would most like to have demo people on Saturday 7/18, but she'll take whoever can come, whenever they can come.  She is open to any demonstrations of any kind.

Will you please email me this week if you are at all interested in attending?  Please indicate when you would want to be there, including both the date(s) and the time(s) that work for you.

I realize this is a little unwieldy, being a three-day, unstructured event.  Thanks for considering it.

In 1892, the city of Chicago planned a world's fair to commemorate
the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. The US government
paid to have copies of the Columbian caravels made and donated to
Spain, so they could be donated to the United States after being
towed across the Atlantic. In Norwaty, twelve years had passed since
the discovery of the Gokstad ship, and the Norwegians--feeling that
the US had forgotten the true first Europeans in North America in
their deification of Columbus--arranged the construction of a 1:1
copy of the Gokstad ship. It was then sailed across the Atlantic on
its own power, was taken through the Erie Canal to the Great :Lakes
and sailed/towed to Chicago. It was called The Viking, and it was a
high point of the Fair. Afterwards, it went down the Illinois River
to the Mississippi and then to New Orleans, where it spent the winter
of 1893-4. While there, it became the property of the city of Chicago
and was towed back up the Mississippi to rest alongside the Fine Arts
Museum of the Fair (by then the Field Museum and now the Museum of
Science and Industry). She remains the only ocean-going vessel to
have made this trip. The ship was refurbished and donated to Lincoln
Park, where it was displayed in the zoo for over 70 years, then put
into storage and eventually stored at Good Templar Park in Geneva,
Illinois. It has gone thru years of neglect, repair and is now being
strengthened and repaired for permanent exhibition. She is still a
majestic lady.

On Sunday, 21 June, the Park will host the 98th annual Swedish Day,
allowing people into the park, to see the ship and to see the other
elements of the festival, including an accurate Viking encampment. It
was great fun last year and probably will be again this year. For
more information, see http://www.swedishday.net/

The park will also be open for visitors the next weekend, but there
will be no other festivities. Hop you can stop by and enjoy the festivities.

Cheers, Folo

Due to restructuring at Gareth's place of employment he will need to be in training meetings all weekend.  Because of this, we are going to reschedule....not sure when yet as we are all pretty swamped, but we promise we will make this happen at a latter date.

Hello all,

Maestra Gwen Nocturnal is heading up a project to create baronial standards for part of the pageantry at the 40 year celebration.  The standards will be painted onto silk fabric.  Her and THL Jocelyn are currently working on the design.

At this time we need painting volunteers.  Anyone interested in being part of the standard painting crew please email Maestra Gwen at c.wong.mccowin@... to be added to the volunteer list.

At this time, they are also researching how different paints adhere to silk in order to minimize bleed and maximize color, anyone with prior knowledge feel free to email as well.  In fact, anyone willing to jump on the research band - wagon we will be more than happy to have your assistance.

40 Year will be amazing!

Nonsense. Once the tents were up, this would be ideal weather for
a local campout. We'd have a chance to test waterproofing and
windproofing before Pennsic.

Greetings!

Please forgive the delay - I've been extremely busy with mundane stuff this week.

I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who participated in Border Skirmish 6.
This is a special event for me, as Border Skirmish 3 was where I first got to help run an event, and where I first met any Thieves of Hearts.
I'm very pleased with the new location, and I hope everybody else is too - every time I had to climb that hill, I kept telling myself, 'It's good exercise!'
I think Marie La Fauconniere, our autocrat this year, went above and beyond in getting us such a fine site, and making sure everything went smoothly, even if that meant staying up 'til sunrise making sure everyone was OK.

Likewise, our CAM counterparts did their part with little help or direction from us - their list ropes and almost everything else showed up, was set up and disappeared punctually.
(The only exception was the grills, and they were late, not missing!)
Simon was everywhere, helping set up on Friday, being the brute squad Saturday night, and tearing down Sunday.
Rose Marian was always near troll, as far as I could tell, making sure that someone experienced was present.

The concert Saturday afternoon went well in spite of a few snags and lack of foresight on the planner's part, which I hope can be forgiven, as I have never put on a concert before.

The Thieves of Hearts sailed into port, played with fire, and sailed on.
As always, their pirate ship, the Ridden Moon, was a star feature, both during the day and especially after hours.

I had a good time, and I want to thank everyone who helped me do it; my co-conspirators Court and Country, Ravenslake, CAM, Thieves of Hearts, Ayreton, and the Township of Kenosha.
Every single person who showed up helped to make this past weekend a fun one - thank you all!

A large yard sale of MEDIEVAL, RENAISSANCE, and 18th CENTURY
costumes and accessories, gently used, store new, and handmade will be Sunday
afternoon on Kennilworth in Berwyn, IL. Please contact me (Lesley Carhart) or
my mother, Susan Carhart, for details. I saw costumes for men, women, and kids
in many sizes - there is too much stuff for me to size and photograph
everything.

This is part of the estate sale of two long-time S.C.A. members and costumers.

Both husband and wife lost their battles to terminal illness this Spring. They
spent many years active in S.C.A. and other reenactment events and accumulated
a houseful of reenactment costumes and medieval weapons. We (the family) will
just be happy to see the costumes (many of which were never even worn) used.
We've contacted the local reenactment groups, but we'd love to hear from
anybody else who would like to stop by on Sunday.

All proceeds will go towards the college education of their orphan.

Dear HIlary,

I am *so* looking forward to the first painting party for the Baronial Standards. I will be there, anyplace, practically anytime. Just keep me posted on the plans!

There are 18 current baronies in the Middle Kingdom, and to have heraldic standards for all of them, in matching sizes and fabrics, will be the coolest thing in the world!

The plan is to have them all ready for the 40-yr event, and use them as decoration there, maybe mounted on the big stairway leading up from the main lobby. And then, all the standards can be marched into Court that night, and presented as a gift to the current Baronies of the Midrealm from the Incipient Barony of Aryeton! What an amazing court presentation! This will blow them away!

The only thing better would be to have the 40-yr event before Pennsic, so we could give them their banners early, and then the banners could enter in procession during the Opening Ceremonies! It won't happen like that this year, but maybe next year!

Naturally, we will also make a 19th baronial standard to match--for Aryeton! There's nothing like planning ahead, right?

So, thanks very much to Maestra Gwen for organizing this project, and to Lady Hilary for advertising the plans! I can't wait to see the results!

yours,

Fern

Seamus,

I'd be interested in coming out to maybe learn some new techniques. I've learned
some basics from Baron Etienne, but I think it's always good to learn as much as
you can from as many people as you can. By the way, the Grey Gargoyles are
tentatively planning some kind of turn shoe making class, but it seems to be
taking an awful long time to get going. I've got lots of 5-7 oz. veg tanned oak
shoulders which I was told would be good for making shoes. Would you be able to
get me started making a pair of boots? I'm looking to make something similar to
what a English archer circa 1356 would've worn. I have some basic tools - lacing
punches, mallet, hole punches, dyes, needles, artificial sinew, latigo lacing,
etc.

everyone is pretty scattered in the summer. If you're Pennsic bound, you

I'm good for beekeeping, but I have been told that teaching the same thing over and over is not good.  As an alternative, I can teach evening dance prep in the afternoon or morning.  As well as run dance in the evening.

Subject: From Their Majesties: Aid For Pennsic

Please read these words from Their Majesties:

Their most august and royal Majesties, EikBrandr, Dragon king of
iron glory, Oathbinder bearing and fierce foe defeating, and Runa,
fair of face but fairer of judgment, send with joy these words to
those who in fief hold Their land and herald Their voice.

It has been with pleasure that We have begun Our time on the Midrealm
throne, and been lifted by the revelry and celebration of Our
Coronation. But the drums of war cease but briefly, and were always
beating in Our hearts. Strong is that beat, too loud to be ignored,
and growing more insistent with every passing week. We cannot contain
its call; We now echo it and send it to you to strengthen and spread
throughout Our lands. War approaches!

Taking the Midrealm host to the field of Pennsic has long been a duty
of the summer Crown. It is Our hope to bring new life and further
renown to Our kingdom. There are three ways that We call on you, and
your Baronies, to assist in this goal. As We have said, the stronger
Our heart beats within Our realm, the stronger it can be reflected
through Our efforts outside Our borders. These tasks We ask of you
will create that strength.

Firstly, war is a martial endeavour. Our army has grown in skill and
strength every year, and We ask that you continue the same efforts of
melee practice that have contributed to this excellence. We ask that
you gather your levy, as great as always, and prepare them for travel
into foreign lands. Further, We seek to expand our abilities with the
feathered shaft, for this is dear to Our Queen's heart. As has been
cried, Her Majesty shall bring to the field a unit of archers that
shall be named Runa's Rangers. We ask that you call to arms all those
who would wield a bow that they may join Her in this effort. We
expect more archers from every barony than have ever been seen on the
Pennsic battlefield from Our Kingdom before.

To hone the skills of Runa's Rangers, We have advised Our Kingdom
Earl Marshal that We shall begin to compete with all other kingdoms
of the Known World in the Inter-Kingdom Combat Archery Competition,
with the shafted arrows that may be used on foreign fields. Much like
the IKAC that is familiar to many, the IKCAC fires those arrows that
are built to shafted arrow combat archery conventions, firing on
targets. Full rules and parameters are available. We encourage all
Our subjects to take advantage of this, and to put Our kingdom at the
forefront of this contest.

The acts of war that are pursued on the field cannot be enjoyed
without support from many, many others. We ask that Our kingdom be
known not only for our dominance in battle but also for Our generous
and industrious nature. There are a variety of branches at Pennsic
that require volunteers, and We look forward to hearing your reports
of Our people, inspired by you to highest feats of service. We will
reward such acts accordingly, and Our kingdom will thrive from such a
gift to the entire Society.

Finally, Our presence at Pennsic is built on the support of Our
people. We are looking for every Barony to meet Our call for
retainers and guards throughout Our reign and especially for Our
Royal encampment. We have asked Sgt. Bjarki, to be Our Captain of the
guard. We know that he has already been speaking with you about
guards, and it is Our hope that many fine warriors of the Dragon, be
they heavy or light, stand forth to help guard Our Presence. Our
Hersir, Squire Captain Artair is Our head retainer, and he will be
contacting you to coordinate the help of retainers form Our people
throughout the kingdom.

We ask that you announce and organize as much help as possible within
your borders, and contact Our staff to let them know how you may be
of assistance.

We thank you now for your efforts to come. We know that We ask much
of you, but this only comes from what you have already shown your
Baronies are capable of, and We know that you hold the glory of Our
kingdom as dear in your hearts as We do in Ours.

Written in Our scriptorium in the Cleftlands, on this date. To
certify these words, we have here under set Our hands.
EikBrandr and Runa

Greeting All!

One of our requirements for advancement to Barony is that we state our
expectations for the Landed Nobility of Ayreton.

Our last newsletter was about the Landed Nobility and included letters from the
populace as well as sitting Nobles from throughout the Kingdom. It is an
excellent source of information so please read it. You can use this last
newsletter as a starting point to know what is important to you.

Newsletter available online at the Ayreton website:

http://ayreton.home.att.net/AYRETON_NEWSLETTER_April_2009.pdf

What have other groups done?

Mostly they have about a half page document – five to ten points – that lists
what they would like the Baron and/or Baroness to do. They are what you would
probably expect – things like "Support the Barony, Attend Baronial Meetings,
Encourage Growth, Attend Baronial Events" and the such.

As time permits, we will brainstorm expectations after our Charter discussions
but before our Baronial meetings in July and September with a goal of having our
expectations ready for vote at the September Baronial meeting. We will likely
use some of the techniques we used for the Charter so please come to these next
two meetings.

See you soon,
~philip
