The Ayreton Yahoo! Group is used to post news, make announcements, and for
discussion of interest to all groups in the Chicago area. We encourage all
people of Ayreton to subscribe and receive email or digests, so although it is
not prohibited, please try to keep chatting to the local group mailing lists.

To prevent spam, we unfortunately require new members' first post be approved by
the moderators before being able to post to the mailing list. (This is better
than requiring moderators to approve every member or every post individually.)

The message archive and calendar are available to the public, not just to our
members, so please be aware of this when posting messages and calendar events.
Also, members can elect to hide their email address from being displayed
anywhere within the group. This is done so people who wish to maintain their
privacy can still get/view the announcements for the area. Members who choose
this option cannot post by sending email, and must log in to the Yahoo! Groups
page to post.

These policies are open to discussion, and any grievances should be brought up
to the group owners by sending email to ayreton-owner@yahoogroups.com

Discourse on this list is requested to be kept to Ayreton-wide issues such as
discussion on the Barony process, Ayreton Carnival and any other such area wide
issues. Discourse shall be kept civil as it is entirely possible to disagree
with out being diagreeable. Personal attacks of any kind and general rudeness
are in direct violation of this policy. The decision if a violation has
occurred is entirely at the discretion of the moderators. Violators will be
given three warnings and then banned from posting to the Ayreton Yahoo! Group.
Moderators will try to give polite reminders first before giving any official
warnings, however, this is at their discretion. Banning from posting will last
for three months and then the individual banned must draft an apology letter for
their behavior that led to them being banned. They will then be put on
moderated posting status until the moderators feel they will comply with the
posting rules of this Yahoo! Group. We encourage everyone to partipate in
Ayreton-wide discussions and express freely their opinions without worry of
reprisal from the moderators. We simply ask that you do so in a chivalrous and
courteous manner and without attacking anyone.

Dear Alexander,

I will be attending this event and as for volunteering.  Please let me know
what you need in the way of help. I can help out a little bit Friday night,
Saturday and Sunday.  Are you the group that's in the foyer?  If you are, I
understand your group gets a discount.  Would I be offered the same discount?
How do I let people know?

Please send me your schedule needs, discount details, etc.

Cheers,

Robin Goldman(Lady Eleanor Ravenild)

            Greetings!

Not to worry if whatever class you might teach is not SCA period- folks
from picts to present day will be attending, so "period" is several thousand
years.

I do not expect anyone to have to do an "all-day" demo; I prefer to
have folks trade off at the SCA display (3-4 hours each) and the class periods
are under an hour unless you want them longer.

Illumination and drop spinning would be excellent for classes or the
SCA display. At the SCA display, we should be SCA period, but for classes that
is not as much of a problem.

I'll mark you as a volunteer-please keep an eye out for further
announcements. Thanks for your help!

Respectfully,

Alexander

Lord Alexander,

I would be willing to help out for a few hours each day, but not ALL DAY as I
would like to have a break, how would that work out if you wanted time to shop,
attend classes, etc.  And I can do some painting of scrolls/scroll work, drop
spinning but some of my stuff may not be al period.  I can try make it seem
period (use shells, etc.)  Any suggestions?  This would be my second time and
I plan to be there Friday-Sunday.

I can do Anglo Saxon, Italian, Irish.

Greetings!

I am the SCA contact person for Reenactorfest 5. It will be held on 6-9
February 2009 at the Westin Chicago North Shore (www.westin.com/
chicagonorthshor e).

Reenactorfest is a convention for reenactors from all time periods.
Last year, I saw picts, Romans, crusaders, English Civil War folks,  American
Civil War folks, folks from the Spanish American War, Spanish Civil War, WWI,
WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Iraq...pretty much any conflict in history.

The person who runs the Fest was looking for some SCA participation,
and I said I knew some people. So, here is the deal.

The SCA will have a display set up in a common area, centered on the
merchant booth (14 Cent Flemish design) made by Lochlainn MacGregor. It is a
good attention grabber, and can hold displays, tables, etc. I expect that we
will want one or two people there all the time, to hand out SCA Chatelaine
fliers, and info on the SCA and events. I'd like to have short, cozy demos for
passers by-games, fiber arts, cooking, calligraphy and illumination, possibly
pewter casting, etc...

We also have the opportunity to have classes in rooms provided by
Reenactorfest. Class periods are 45-55 minutes, but we can shift times to
accommodate our needs. I am looking for class instructors in most any art or
science (you know, this is a "wet" site...), armoring, glassblowing (ok, without
the furnace-a display and description? ), various fiber arts, garb making,
pattern making, etc. I expect the classes will be SCA oriented, but there is no
limit on the time period covered. Do not be constrained because all students
will not be SCA, look at it as an opportunity to show folks what you know!

Finally, we have the opportunity to schedule "kinetic" demos-fighting,
dancing, music, etc. These demos will be held in a demo area shared by other
reenactors doing their own displays.

All persons involved in a live demo or seminar will pay only $5.00 to
get in that day. All other days they attend they pay the standard gate fee for
that day(s). Here is an example of how it will work. The person who brings the
spinning wheel (for instance) and does that live display all day gets in for
only $5 (instead of the $20 gate

fee). His or her friends pay the regular fee. So, folks who are >participants<
or >instructors< get in for $5. Anyone else pays full price.

Besides classes and demos to see the convention is a huge gathering of
suttlers, merchants, artists, and artisans. Even if everyone is not of the SCA
period, a very many are. And even if they are not, it is incredibly interesting
to see. Quite the education and entertainment.

So, if you are interested in volunteering to man the SCA display, or
give a class, or participate in a live demo, please let me know. I will be
putting out a schedule and more information when I have more to say. Thank you
for your attention.

John -

Classes are 45 min to 1 hour, but it's our show and we can tailor it to your
needs if you think it will draw people in.  We have lots of open space to set
up live displays this year, you just need to tell me what you have in mind. I
think a foyer display will be great for spinning, weaving, calligraphy, etc
and we'll do sword fighting in the live area.

There is a change to our structure this year to combat being taken advantage
of (as we have in every year past). Here it is:

All persons involved in a live demo or seminar will pay only $5.00 to get in
that day. All other days they attend they pay the standard gate fee for that
day(s).

This stops it from being a free for all... literally.  Here's some examples
on how it will work for your people. The person who brings the spinning wheel
and does that live display all day gets in for only $5 (instead of the $20 gate
fee). His or her friends pay the regular fee. We got killed because in the
past folks would say "oh, we're with the spinning wheel" and 20 people sneak in.

I am sure you understand!!

What big SCA events are coming up? Do you need flyers?

Best regards - Mike

Greetings!
???? I have reached the limit of folks to "officially" staff the SCA Information
Booth. You are invited to come by and stay as long as you like, with any art,
craft, science, etc that you care to display. I am sorry that I cannot include
anyone else not currently on the list of SCA booth staff. Thank you for
offering!

4. No SCA Discount for Reenactor Fest
    Posted by: "AlexdeSet@..." AlexdeSet@...
Date: Fri Jan 30, 2009 4:32 pm ((PST))

Greetings!
???? The director of the Fest left me an email today, asking me to make this
announcement: There Is No SCA Discount? On Tickets At Reenactor Fest (Feb 6-8
2009).
???? Some folks who have volunteered their time and effort to staff the SCA
Information Booth (and demonstrate various arts, sciences, and crafts) are
paying a reduced site fee. This has been arranged in advance, through the good
offices of the Fest Director, who has a list opf those people-the discount is
only good for the day (or days) they are working the SCA Information booth.
???? (By the way, the SCA Information Booth will be in the foyer, I believe
outside the display areas of the Fest itself. The booth is the replica Flemish
14 century merchant booth, with a blue and white striped awning, that the
merchant "Celtic Sun" uses sometimes at SCA events.)
???? We hope you come by the Fest-this will be my second year, and I encourage
people to attend. Loads of merchants (covering thousands of years of time), lots
of demos, entertainment, classes. There is a Ball on Saturday night that? is

Subject: New business - Regalia

Send Email Send Email

It was pointed out to Philip and me by the transition seneschal that we need to start thinking about regalia. As exchequer, I'd normally be the one to solicit proposals from vendors for Coronets and other diverse regalia articles. I am fortunate to have contacts that can enable us to get a bunch of bids for coronets from artists around the Known World.

It has been recommended that we get two sets - one for 'dress' and one for 'work'. This particular effort might cost us as much as $1000. We have about $1000 and we are about to hold a profitable event, so we can probably afford it.

So, what I'd like to do is:
a) ask the kingdom exchequer list for their preferred vendors
b) put together a quick draft of coronet requirements from Midrealm sumptuary customs (golden coronet, six spheres)
c) add requirements to customize for Ayreton (use colors blue and green, incorporate white/silver 6 pointed stars in groups of 5)
d) allow the artists to use their favorite medium (metals, leather, cloth, etc.)
e) submit the draft request to this list for review, and approve at a meeting
f) submit the request to the artists and get the proposals
g) submit the proposals to this list for review, and approve at a meeting

Please let me know if you are okay with me proceeding with this plan, or know any additional artists that might like to participate. Thanks!

Greetings!
There is no need for SCA fighters at this year's Reenactor Fest, as there will be no SCA fighting (pay no attention to the website). Although the Fest website shows (or did show) a "Pas d'Armes", that time will be filled by bagpipers.
     Thank you for volunteering, though!

Dear Alexander,

I will be attending this event and as for volunteering.  Please let me know what you need in the way of help. I can help out a little bit Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.  Are you the group that's in the foyer?  If you are, I understand your group gets a discount.  Would I be offered the same discount?  How do I let people know?

Please send me your schedule needs, discount details, etc.

Cheers,

Robin Goldman(Lady Eleanor Ravenild)

            Greetings!

Not to worry if whatever class you might teach is not SCA period- folks from picts to present day will be attending, so "period" is several thousand years.

I do not expect anyone to have to do an "all-day" demo; I prefer to have folks trade off at the SCA display (3-4 hours each) and the class periods are under an hour unless you want them longer.

Illumination and drop spinning would be excellent for classes or the SCA display. At the SCA display, we should be SCA period, but for classes that is not as much of a problem.

I'll mark you as a volunteer-please keep an eye out for further announcements. Thanks for your help!

Respectfully,

Alexander

Lord Alexander,

I would be willing to help out for a few hours each day, but not ALL DAY as I would like to have a break, how would that work out if you wanted time to shop, attend classes, etc.  And I can do some painting of scrolls/scroll work, drop spinning but some of my stuff may not be al period.  I can try make it seem period (use shells, etc.)  Any suggestions?  This would be my second time and I plan to be there Friday-Sunday.

I can do Anglo Saxon, Italian, Irish.

Greetings!

I am the SCA contact person for Reenactorfest 5. It will be held on 6-9 February 2009 at the Westin Chicago North Shore (www.westin.com/ chicagonorthshor e).

Reenactorfest is a convention for reenactors from all time periods. Last year,20I saw picts, Romans, crusaders, English Civil War folks,  American Civil War folks, folks from the Spanish American War, Spanish Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Iraq...pretty much any conflict in history.

The person who runs the Fest was looking for some SCA participation, and I said I knew some people. So, here is the deal.

The SCA will have a display set up in a common area, centered on the merchant booth (14 Cent Flemish design) made by Lochlainn MacGregor. It is a good attention grabber, and can hold displays, tables, etc. I expect that we will want one or two people there all the time, to hand out SCA Chatelaine fliers, and info on the SCA and events. I'd like to have short, cozy demos for passers by-games, fiber arts, cooking, calligraphy and illumination, possibly pewter casting, etc...

We also have the opportunity to have classes in rooms provided by Reenactorfest. Class periods are 45-55 minutes, but we can shift times to accommodate our needs. I am looking for class instructors in most any art or science (you know, this is a "wet" site...), armoring, glassblowing (ok, without the furnace-a display and description? ), various fiber arts, garb making, pattern making, etc. I expect the classes will be SCA oriented, but there is no limit on the time period covered. Do not be constrained because all students will not be SCA, look at it as an opportunity to show folks what you know !

Finally, we have the opportunity to schedule "kinetic" demos-fighting, dancing, music, etc. These demos will be held in a demo area shared by other reenactors doing their own displays.

All persons involved in a live demo or seminar will pay only $5.00 to get in that day. All other days they attend they pay the standard gate fee for that day(s). Here is an example of how it will work. The person who brings the spinning wheel (for instance) and does that live display all day gets in for only $5 (instead of the $20 gate

fee). His or her friends pay the regular fee. So, folks who are >participants< or >instructors< get in for $5. Anyone else pays full price.

Besides classes and demos to see the convention is a huge gathering of suttlers, merchants, artists, and artisans. Even if everyone is not of the SCA period, a very many are. And even if they are not, it is incredibly interesting to see. Quite the education and entertainment.

So, if you are interested in volunteering to man the SCA display, or give a class, or participate in a live demo, please let me know. I will be putting out a schedule and more information when I have more to say. Thank you for your attention.

Greetings!
???? I have reached the limit of folks to "officially" staff the SCA Information Booth. You are invited to come by and stay as long as you like, with any art, craft, science, etc that you care to display. I am sorry that I cannot include anyone else not currently on the list of SCA booth staff. Thank you for offering!

Greetings!
???? Not to worry if whatever class you might teach is not SCA period- folks from picts to present day will be attending, so "period" is several thousand years.
???? I do not expect anyone to have to do an "all-day" demo; I prefer to have folks trade off at the SCA display (3-4 hours each) and the class periods are under an hour unless you want them longer.
???? Illumination and drop spinning would be excellent for classes or the SCA display. At the SCA display, we should be SCA period, but for classes that is not as much of a problem.
???? I'll mark you as a volunteer-please keep an eye out for further announcements. Thanks for your help!

Alexander

Greetings!
???? I am the SCA contact person for Reenactorfest 5. It will be held on 6-9 February 2009 at the Westin Chicago North Shore (www.westin.com/ chicagonorthshor e).
???? Reenactorfest is a convention for reenactors from all time periods. Last year, I saw picts, Romans, crusaders, English Civil War folks,? American Civil War folks, folks from the Spanish American War, Spanish Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Iraq...pretty much any conflict in history.
???? The person who runs the Fest was looking for=2 0some SCA participation, and I said I knew some people. So, here is the deal.
???? The SCA will have a display set up in a common area, centered on the merchant booth (14 Cent Flemish design) made by Lochlainn MacGregor. It is a good attention grabber, and can hold displays, tables, etc. I expect that we will want one or two people there all the time, to hand out SCA Chatelaine fliers, and info on the SCA and events. I'd like to have short, cozy demos for passers by-games, fiber arts, cooking, calligraphy and illumination, possibly pewter casting, etc...
???? We also have the opportunity to have classes in rooms provided by Reenactorfest. Class periods are 45-55 minutes, but we can shift times to accommodate our needs. I am looking for class instructors in most any art or science (you know, this is a "wet" site...), armoring, glassblowing (ok, without the furnace-a display and description? ), various fiber arts, garb making, pattern making, etc. I expect the classes will be SCA oriented, but there is no limit on the time period covered. Do not be constrained because all students will not be SCA, look at it as an opportunity to show folks what you know!
???? Finally, we have the opportunity to schedule "kinetic" demos-fighting, dancing, music, etc. These demos will be held in a demo area shared by other reenactors doing their own displays.
???? All persons involved in a live demo or seminar will pay only $5.00 to get in that day. All other days they attend they pay the standard g ate fee for that day(s). Here is an example of how it will work. The person who brings the spinning wheel (for instance) and does that live display all day gets in for only $5 (instead of the $20 gate

4. No SCA Discount for Reenactor Fest
    Posted by: "AlexdeSet@aol.com" AlexdeSet@aol.com
Date: Fri Jan 30, 2009 4:32 pm ((PST))

Greetings!
???? The director of the Fest left me an email today, asking me to make this announcement: There Is No SCA Discount? On Tickets At Reenactor Fest (Feb 6-8 2009).
???? Some folks who have volunteered their time and effort to staff the SCA Information Booth (and demonstrate various arts, sciences, and crafts) are paying a reduced site fee. This has been arranged in advance, through the good offices of the Fest Director, who has a list opf those people-the discount is only good for the day (or days) they are working the SCA Information booth.
???? (By the way, the SCA Information Booth will be in the foyer, I believe outside the display areas of the Fest itself. The booth is the replica Flemish 14 century merchant booth, with a blue and white striped awning, that the merchant "Celtic Sun" uses sometimes at SCA events.)
???? We hope you come by the Fest-this will be my second year, and I encourage people to attend. Loads of merchants (covering thousands of years of time), lots of demos, entertainment, classes. There is a Ball on Saturday night that? is said to be increadible.
???? In any case, I hope there is no confusion now. I will be at "Maidens" in Wurm Wald tomorrow (31 Jan) and will be at the Fest next weekend with "Celtic Sun". If you have a question for me, please ask.
Thank you for your attention.
Respectfully,
Alexander de Seton

In lieu of a rather small Dragon Runes for January 2009, I have opted
to 'hold out' in hopes of making this a 'Twelfth Night Recap' issue.

So...please send me your Twelfth Night stories! It doesn't matter if
it's just a blurb about one little thing you enjoyed, or if you wish to
wax poetic about the day as a whole.

We have so much to be thankful for in our province! We collectively
pulled off an amazing day of activities and memories for all who
attended. I can't think of a better way to remember the day than to
add it into our chronicled history.

Friday, February 13 will be the cutoff date for submissions. I hope to
hear from many of you!

From the Kingdom Earl Marshal:

This program has been in place for a while, but thought I'd remind
everyone (as part of the March 2009 Pale letter as well):

To promote combat archery in the field, this summer, I will be
continuing a way for Gentles that wish, to make combat archery their
first authorization under the following Program.
This program is not compulsory on any Member of the Chivalry. If you
wish to take part in this program and you can't find a Member of the
Chivalry in your area, please feel free to contact me and I will
direct you to the nearest one that is available.
Program for Alternative Combat Archery Authorizations:

Purpose:
To expand the number of combat archers while providing a
more "period" approach to the use of archery on the field of battle.
To allow those who train directly under a member of the Chivalry,
the opportunity to authorize in CA without authorizing in weapon and
shield first.
To offer continued guidance to combat archers in the Rules and
Cultural Expectations for combat archery among the Heavy Weapons
Fighters.

Execution:
Any member of the Chivalry may undertake the training of Combat
Archers.
Anyone wishing to authorize CA as a first authorization may seek
out a member of the Chivalry for training. Members of the Chivalry
may also seek out gentles they feel would be interested in becoming
combat archers.
Any member of the Chivalry that agrees to take on such
gentles also agrees to become responsible not only for their training
in CA, but also the agree to be responsible for their training in the
culture of the Heavy combat as practiced within the Midrealm. The
Chivalry sponsor must be present during the authorization!
The actual authorization must still take place at an SCA event during
a melee as per the rules in the Marshal's handbook
The purpose of this program is not to see how many new CA
authorizations can be generated, but rather to increase the awareness
of Combat Archery and to offer continued guidance to combat archers
in the Rules and Cultural Expectations for combat archery among the
Heavy Weapons Fighters. It is hoped that members of the Chivalry that
take part in this program will continue to oversee all of the combat
archers they trained.

Greetings!
I helped set up the SCA Information Booth tonight (Thursday) and it is ready to go. It is in the main hall outside the vendor room, on the outside wall of the hotel. I am told there will  be other displays in the hall, too.
For those whose names are on the list for staffing the SCA Information Booth: check in at the ticket table; they have everyone's name on a clipboard, ready to check you off. The names I put out on this list are a mix of SCA and "legal" names-just tell them who you are (the name you gave me).
There is no particular need to be in garb, but I think it is a good idea. There are washrooms close by for changing if needed.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered! Thank you to the Incipient Barony of Ayreton and their Chatellain, who gave me a nice hand-out, which I reproduced about 200 times, and to the Shire of Ravenslake and their Chatellain who is bringing more literature.
See you at the Reenactor Fest this weekend!

Subject: [SCA-Tree-Girt-Sea] Twelfth Night Program Books

Hello all: I remember seeing an announcement on this list, that some folks were wanting a program book from this event for commemoration of the event, or whatever. If any one is still looking, I have an extra one that is not wrinkled from being carried home in my bag. I am willing to part with the non-wrinkled program, if anyone still feels in need of one. Please e-mail: Ardena6@yahoo. com (0fflist) and contact me if you need the extra program. Yours, Ardena/Amy W.

Greetings!
I would like to thank all those who volunteered to staff the SCA Information Booth at Reenactor Fest V this weekend (6, 7, 8 Feb), whether you were able to serve or not. I truely appreciate your volunteering your time. Those who were able to staff the booth did a great job. We had many positive comments, and I hope we made many good impressions, and get some recruits out of the effort.
Respectfully,
Alexander de Seton

PERIOD COOKS NIGHT

We're having Period Cooks Night on the 1st Friday of the month in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago.  There's a different theme each month (So far we have done Roman, Basque, and English from the Richard II era). Some meetings we plan to invite a Guest Chef to come and demonstrate/show us how a certain item is cooked and learn from that experienced person.

Normally, each person attending brings a period recipe (from the theme we've chosen for that month) and the ingredients to cook the dish, but we all get together and cook it together and then we sample all the dishes that night together!  We comment on them, take notes, and make suggestions on how to improve them.

For more info please contact PeriodCooksNight@...

GREY GARGOYLES/AYRETON A&S AFTERNOONS

For the past several months, we've had a growing number of people showing up at Ayreton combined fighter practice on Sundays at Ida Noyes to do casual A&S, gab, et cetera. We hope to begin introducing some beginners tutorials in various arts and sciences during these meets soon, and I think many of these will be of great interest to the Ayreton populace as a whole.   Timing coincides with the Ayreton fighter practices.
