Greetings unto the populace of the PIB of Ayreton,
It is with a sad heart that I inform you that my mother passed away
today. She had many health problems and yesterday she successfully
had her right hip replaced. Today, she all of her blood vessels quit
working at the same time.
I will be leaving to get on a plane tonight to fly to Reno, NV.

Guerric, Sarah, Sean, Nicholaa, Gareth, Kinji and I are definitely going to be there.  We'll bring a small blue pop-up sunshade to put next to the tent in case we need more room.  We'll also bring chairs.

All pray to your designated pantheon to give us good weather...

I think I'd like to come too.

And I'll try and bring some other people along with me.

Do you need help from us? Should we try and meet you at some time to
get the pavillion up?

Thanks for offering Sarafina.

The Thieves will also have a large daycamp (8+ fencers with gear and their significant others, probably two sunshades).  We should definitely try to set up next to each other to form one larger daycamp.

Morning all,

Hate to spam the list with something that should be sent to the Brewing Guild list, but I'm three letters in already and still no reply.  I do not know if my letters are not being received or being blocked or other frustrating fun and games.

My request centers around this central theme - I would very much like to read the uploaded and proposed charter, but it's saved as an .docx and not a .doc.  There is not a single reading-system currently on my computer (and trust me, I have many) that will translate this document into something other than gibberish.  Is it possible to upload the file again - this time saved specifically as a .doc and NOT a .docx?  Barring that, perhaps a translated form of this proposed charter could just be emailed to me?  I am becoming very frustrated and disheartened by my inability to get a readable copy or any reply to my request.

Hi there. I hadn't seen any of your posts to the guild group yet. I just checked, and your messages were all pending approval. I wasn't notified that there were any messages pending. That has now been fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience. What software are you using to try to read the file? It is in word 2007, and sent from a different computer than I am using now. I just opened it with word xp on this computer and have attached that to this e-mail. I hope this solves helps.

For those of you who don't know when Microsoft introduced Office 2007 they
also introduced the DOCX file.

The DOCX files primary purpose it to be incompatible with other file
editting software (such as Open Office) and prior versions of Office (such
as Office XP).

For the older versions of Office Microsoft finally offered an addin that
allows you to open the files... but for the rest of us that don't use
Microsoft products - we have no way to open these files.

Please when using Office 2007 to save documents you want others to read
please select "File > Save As" and choose DOC not DOCX.

Thank you.

Jadwiga and others,

If you have a new pc and the newest version of Word, it automatically saves the file as a docx file type so as to not be automatically compatible with older versions of itself. There are some new features to word and I would guess that MS is trying to force people to upgrade. However, if you do a "Save As" you can change the file type to be compatible with Word 97-2002, ie doc file types.

If you have the ability to create pdf files, that would be the best option. Anyone with adobe reader (which is free) can then open them.

Hope this helps.

Sarafina :D

PS Hope to see many of you at Chaos Caravan tomorrow. Please feel free to set up with or near us and make use of the shade and ice water provided.

Sad missive from Tessa and Lutr

To to the populace of the Middle Kingdom,

We write this missive with a heavy heart. As of last night the BOD has terminated our reign. During the period when Tessa was recovering from her shattered elbow and surgery, we had a hard time juggling personal life and SCA life. Our membership renewal was lost in the mail and by the time we realized it, our membership had lapsed for 3 days. According to Copora, that leads to an automatic termination. We are very sorry for any hurt or pain this may cause to the populace of the Middle Kingdom.

Our kingdom is the best in the knowne world due to it¢s populace. We appreciate the support that we were given. It was truly incredible. We hope that everyone will give the same support to our successors no matter who they might be.

Tessa & Lutr

More info from Midrealm Regent

It is with absolutely no joy that I find myself Regent of the Middle Kingdom. Her Grace Aislinn will be assisting me in those duties.

While this is a very unusual situation, it does will not require vast changes to the day to day operation of the Kingdom.

We already have a Crown Tourney scheduled to take place on Sunday May 25th. The format and manor of the tourney will be the same as every other Crown Tourney. The only difference will be that on that day the winner will be Crowned Sovereign and the gentle they fought for will be Crowned Consult.

The new King and Queen will serve for the duration of the normal summer reign. At a time and place to be determained later this summer, another Crown tourney will be held to choose the Heirs who will then step up in September.

If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Duchess Aislinn or myself.

With a bit of hard work and determination, the good works of Lutr and Tessa need not be wasted.

To all who wish to hear Fern's opinion:

Having an immediate Crown Tourney with Lutr's participation sounds like an excellent plan to me!  Good thinking!  I will be very happy to cheer for him and for Tessa, and I am fully prepared to strongly support the winner of the 10 am Crown Tourney, and the subsequent winner of the regular Crown Tourney.

I am sorry about the unfortunate membership lapse, and these troublesome consequences, but those are the rules. We all have to follow Corpora, and so we will. And then we can find an opportunity to make things right again.

Palymar, let me be the first to wish you the *shortest*  possible term as Regent, and also a very easy transition to a new King and Queen on May 26. A mere two weeks--not so bad! You are a good man for this job.

with all my support,

Fern

I've never met Lutr and Tessa. I'm sure they're very nice people with honorable intent.

1) Being Crown is an *awesome* and *rare* privilege. Kinda like winning a gold medal. Only a few people get to experience it.
2) Crowns are officers - they sign warrants. Membership is required to be an officer.
3) Membership is NOT HARD TO GET - you can take care of it online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
4) Long memberships are not hard to get - even only a year should take care of a full reign.
5) Entrants to Crown must prove membership. The intent is to not only validate membership on the day, but to make sure they know when they expire since they have to submit copies of their membership card WITH THE EXPIRATION DATE.
6) Entrants to Crown SWEAR that they know, comply with, and uphold the rules.

Bottom line is, they swore to keep their membership current and they didn't. That may be a human error, but when you get to be the Crown, which is a rare honor, you still need to keep track of the little things. If you don't, how can you be trusted to take care of the bigger things?

This happens often enough now that a change to Corpora to require the membership extend through the reign would be a good idea. I'd be willing to bet that most people who enter Crown already get longer memberships just in case. Too bad that some people who enter Crown don't always think to take care of themselves that way, and now we have to make a rule to stop the churn that a lapsed Crown membership creates, because it is starting to happen more often. When I was on the Board, it only happened once in the 3.5 years, and you couldn't re-up membership online then.

I do like the double-crown solution, and whoever thought of that is a very smart person.

Dear Ayreton,

This business with the membership lapse is a big problem now, but it's going to be all right. This is a problem that can be solved. We now have an interim Regent, next week we will have a stopgap Crown Tourney, followed by an immediate Coronation, and then we can move on.

In the simplest possible future outcome, the winner of the stopgap Crown Tourney will be Lutr. He and Tessa will be crowned--again--and we can all return to our regularly scheduled reign.

In a little while--maybe even by Pennsic--it will be just an interesting story. Of course, it is unfortunate that such a problem happened at all, but mistakes do happen. In this case, the Corpora rules are both clear and unbiased.

Happily, this is a case where all the Corpora rules can be followed correctly, right down to the letter, and the Middle Kingdom can still end up with the royalty that we want to support.

In my opinion, the best way to support Lutr and Tessa now is to cheer for them during the next (dawn?) Crown Tourney. And then to cheer some more during the subsequent regular Crown Tourney.

yours,

Fern (who fully expects to swear fealty to Lutr and Tessa as soon as I see them this summer)

From another, old, used BOD member,

Ghita is correct in what she says about the rules side of the need for membership to be an officer, including king and queen.  I would like to add a couple of my own comments.

The recent events show why membership and honor matter.

The simple fact of losing the membership and the need to run another Crown Tournament only touch the surface of what we in the SCA are all about.

First of all, I am awed and pleased that Lutr and Tessa self-discovered and self-reported their lapse in membership knowing full well what this meant.  I am further awed by their honor in being totally honest and remorseful in what happened by not blaming others.  We need to follow this example.

Secondly, I am further awed by the manner in which His Grace Duke Sir Palymar resolved the matter within the kingdom and within the Society.  Sometimes, the unpleasant jobs are the hardest ones to do.  A steady, yet firm, hand is needed.

Thirdly, I am proud of the actions taken by the SCA Board.  They could have dropped an anvil.  When I was on the board and we saw true honor through honesty and remorse, we played with the soft glove.  I am glad to see this continue.

Lastly, I hope Lutr fights for Tessa in the ad hoc Crown Tourney.  I pray that he stands victorious at the end of the day so he can be our once and future king.

Today is a day when we all should be proud to members of the SCA where membership and honor both matter.

Subject: [Ayreton] On membership and Crowns

This is the most stupid thing I have ever heard.  What reason on Earth can they not give these people a break over a 3-day lapse that has NOTHING to do with their reign, and only exists in MUNDANE PAPERWORK?  What kind of organization is this to which we belong? A heartless bureaucracy? Or a volunteer educational organization dedicated to preserving the BEST of human civilization and civility?

I thought when I joined that it was the later.

This is utterly contemptible.
