Sounds like it-- though you have some options, still:  First, send an email to  LiliesMarshal@...  and ask if all weapons must follow Calontir's handbook.  It's possible that a weapon built to the Society rule may be allowed, given how many people come to Lillies from other Kingdoms.

I can state that armor is allowed by the kingdom of residence, but weapons must meet Calontir standards

Second, if you need this weapon to be Calontir-legal, consider building an 18" striking surface (must be padded), with the 7" axe head as a protruding part of that.  Won't so much look like any weapon I've ever seen, but it'll give you what you want and fit their rules.

This is the only way I know how to do this in Calontir.

Thanks Christian. I think my biggest error when reading these descriptions
was that I wanted to build a halberd, but was instead invisioning a poleax.
Hence, I think I'll be building about 10" of striking surface between the
tip and the axe head itself, which will sit at the bottom of the striking
surface, which I will pad on both sides, to more closely resemble the long
blades I found to protrude out of the top of some halberd pictures I found.

I am curious about how midrealm weapons are accepted or not at the war
though so I will be following up with the Lilies Marshall.

Thanks,

Lukas

What about the pole-axes that TJ of By My Hand sells? Would those fit the bill? (ha ha)

I'll let this missive serve as the reminder that Science! night starts this Sunday (May 27th) at Penilond Maner from 4:00-11:00pm. The map and directions as well as the details will be up on the frasers-oak site later today.

From an email sent to me privately:
Hi Angus!
I'm very interested in a sciences night.  I'm attempting to learn woodworking, I've dabbled in armoring, I've made lots of wine, and I'm quite sure I'll pick up more fascinations as time goes by.  Unfortunately I won't be able to make this Sunday.  I'd like to come in the future though so if you develop a mailing list for it please include me :)

and if you have all those woodworking tools you probably know how to use them?..... you wouldn't happen to be able to teach me the old fashioned hand tools such as planes and chisels?

From the basement of The Oak you hear a loud "thunk" followed swiftly by a stream of Scott's invective. Angus appears out of the basement lab, hair filled with cobwebs and sawdust.

"Pardon m'English there. Cracked m'noggin on a low hangin' board. "

"Aye m'lady, there will be plenty of folks there to teach you in th' use of traditional tools as well as those modern, 'water-powered'[1] ones in m'shop.

As far as MY knowledge of how things work, 'tis my experience that the chisels and planes are for makin great motherin' gouges into th' wood where y'don't want 'em. Th' saws and such are for makin' your material just a wee bit too small. The lathe, a beauty she is, is used to turn exotic wood into exotic sawdust.

Sad it is that you canna' make it this week, but I look forward to seein' ya' soon"
Angus heads back down to the lab. A loud CLANG followed by yet another string of invectives eminate from downstairs. Finally, after a few moments of muttering, you hear the soft *swish* *swish* of a plane smooting wood, and then the strains of "Hooked on a Feeling"[2] being mangled by a nasal-ey tenor voice.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's a Frasers-Oak website? Well, not quite yet. There is still a bunch of construction going on. You can access the site at www.frasers-oak.com  I'll be putting in an image gallery, the RSS feed is up already, there will be forums, mailing lists, and (one Angus' favorite words) blogs.
Frankly, I am excited that there are so many fine folk interested in attending Science! night! I have actually gotten my backside in gear to clean the ruddy place up, install additional lighting, and *gasp* start organizing.

Looking forward to seeing y'all

-*Angus*-

NOTES:
[1] "Water powered" they cry - is Angus addled? Those power tools are electrical. Well, yes and no.  Nuke, oil and coal power is generated with steam turbines, right? So a tablesaw could be considered a "water powered" tool, and that's period, right?
[2] Angus was singing the "ooga chugga" version by Blue Swede

Subject: [ShireofRavenslake] sad tidings

Unto my dear friends of Ravenslake and beyond, greetings.

I have sorrowful news this night.

My beloved lord and husband, Lochlainn MacGregor, died this afternoon at the age of 43. We believe an inherited heart defect struck him in his sleep as he napped after a run. He appears to have died peacefully and without pain. When I found him after I got home from work, it was already too late to do anything for him.

Thus far I can write relatively calmly. It all still has a sense of unreality. There is a part of me that kept waiting, even as the paramedics shook their heads, even as the police waited with me for the coroner, kept waiting for him to suddenly open his eyes and demand to know what all the noise was about. That portion of me, even now, keeps waiting to hear him come into the room, or call to me to join him.

I don't know how long it will take for that portion of me to absorb the truth. It may never.

Lochlainn wasn't always easy to get along with. He spoke his mind and was impatient with political correctness. He could be rude and abrasive, especially in the presence of lax thinking. He was impatient of poor design and slipshod quality. But anyone who cared to listen, who honestly wanted to learn something, always could get his attention.

Lochlainn CARED. He cared passionately about the things he did and the people he called his friends. He was fundamentally incapable of doing anything by half measures. Sometimes this caused him more grief than good; but his good was very good indeed.

He loved children and had a knack for teaching. It was always a grief to him that life had not given him any children of his own. But he took my daughter into his heart and could not have been more proud of her. He gave a number of years to the Cub Scouts and had many good friends among the children of his friends. He loved animals of all sorts, from the field mouse who inhabited our porch last winter to dinosaurs and mammoths and creatures of the deep. He fed the local squirrels and rabbits, and wanted eventually to learn to ride a horse and to scuba dive the Australian reefs. He loved the wildernesses of the world, forest and desert and ocean.

Dan taught me many things. The most important was to hang onto your dreams with both hands, never give them up, keep fighting and striving and trying because nothing ever happens if you give up. He taught me to take life in big bites, not timid nibbles. He taught me to find a strength in myself that I never knew I had.

Friends, I trust you will forgive me for sending this via e-mail instead of calling each of you personally as you deserve. I'm sure you understand that I have many things I must now take care of in the next few days. As soon as I know what the arrangements will be, I will let everyone know. I daresay my sleep schedule will be somewhat disarranged for the next while, so don't worry if I don't answer the phone--I may have simply turned it off for the duration.

Please lift a glass to his memory, or say a prayer if you're so inclined. He was a good man.

~Marie
As I sit here at the computer, the skies have opened to a heavy rain. Even the outdoors he loved, it seems, weeps for his passing. As--finally--do I.

I recieved this post, and since I know no one off the top of my

Greetings,

I have recently relocated to the Chicago area from the Barony of
Darkwater, Kingdom of Trimaris (Orlando, FL). I am looking forward
to getting involved in the SCA up here.

However, I was wondering if you might be able to help me out. I
moved in with a friend up in Vernon Hills and have 2 strong job
prospects, however, my friend recently was rediagnosed with cancer
and needs me out of her home to make room for a family member that
is going to come help her. Do you know of anyone in the area who
has a spare room that could take in one person and 4 cats (clean,
litterbox trained and will stay within the confines of the room)
for, at most, one month? I had so desired to enter the SCA up here
on a better foot, however, circumstances have seriously gone south.
I don't have much money at the moment, but I'm willing to help with
household chores, cooking and anything else that might be needed
(and I can provide my own food and necessary items) until I can
start paying money towards my stay out of my first paycheck. My 2
job prospects are in Arlington Heights and Glenview.

I am open to any suggestions as this is a potentially disastrous
situation. I can also provide references (however, everyone is at
kingdom crown lyste this weekend...) via email & phone numbers,
should it be requested.

I thank you for your time,

Greetings all,

Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone for your calls,
e-mails, and offers of love and support. The way that
everyone has rallied around is amazing and wonderful
to behold. I am doing far better than I had expected
and it's largely due to all of you.

The "formal" services for Lochlainn will be Thursday,
May 31, at Kenosha Funeral Services, 8226 Sheridan
Road in Kenosha. There will be visitation from 5 to 7
pm, with a memorial service following. Anyone who
wishes to speak in Dan's memory at that time will be
welcome (though it would help "traffic management" if
you can let me know in advance that you'd like to
speak).

The Cairn will be open after the service if anyone
wishes to linger. (Contact me off list if you need
directions.) There will also be a more SCAdian
memorial service at a Ravenslake fighter practice
later this summer, date TBD.

In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the
Winthrop Harbor Cub Scout Den 667, The Pale or
Northwatch operating funds, or to the Atlantic
Challenge Apprenticeshop program.

Directions to Kenosha Funeral Center: from I-94, exit
Hwy 50 into Kenosha (just as if you were coming to the
house). At the five-way intersection with 39th St and
Roosevelt Road, continue *straight* ahead on 75th St
instead of veering left on Hwy 50. Go about 1 mile (5
lights) to Sheridan Road/Rt 32 and turn right. The
Center is about 3/4 mile south on the west side of the
road, between a McDonalds, a motorcycle dealership,
and a transmission repair shop. How appropriate.
If coming up from Waukegan/Zion area, just get on
Sheridan and head north to 82nd St.

If you forwarded the original message to someone,
please send this one on to the same folks as well.

Also, if anyone has photos of Lochlainn they would be
willing to share (especially digital), please send
them to me at my work e-mail (lewisn@...) or upload
them to the Ravenslake Yahoo group. I would greatly
appreciate them.

Thank you again,
Marie

Greetings and well met unto you, members and people of the Society for Creative Anachronism.  I am Lord Ian the Green the Ayreton Towne Cryer.  It is my humble honor to be allowed to make annoucements for the area mundanely called the Greater Chicago Area.  This area in the SCA holds The Province of Tree Girt Sea, The Shires of Ravenslake, Vanished Woods, Rokkehealden and Grey Gargoyles as well as the Incipient Shire of Fox Vale.  Though unofficial we call this area Ayreton.

Because we have so many groups in this area who have many activities and similar interests we created a Yahoo! Group so that everyone in Ayreton and the Knowne World could have a centralized resource for information about the Scadian going ons.  Everything from Arts Martial Practices to A&S activities as well as getting rides and similar kinds of information.  Our web address is:

Anyone can access this Yahoo! Group and you do not have to join.  Accessable without joining in are the Messages, the ability to post (but you will always be moderated if you don't join), the links and the calendar.

If you choose to join the Yahoo! Group you will have full access.  Your first post will be moderated and we will try to take you off moderated status as quickly as we can after that.

While discussion is not forbidden we do ask that all postings have to do with something going on in the SCA that is of interest to those in the Ayreton Area.  If a moderator or owner asks a discussion goes offlist we ask that you honor that request.  After all the primary purpose of the list is to get information out to people.

As you may have guesses anyone can make posts, not just me the Ayreton Towne Cryer.

What kinds of things are announced/taked about on the Ayreton List?

Just about everything Scadian!  Births, deaths, fighter practices, A&S activities, ride requests, ride offers, sales at stores, events, resources, who won Crown Tournament bad weather warnings affecting events and many other things as well.

I look forward to seeing you on the list, we already have over 150 members, and hope you find it useful!

YOUTH BOFFER

Here is the summer schedule for youth boffer.....It takes place at 2 different spots.
The months of June and July have the same 1st and 3rd Mondays that we always try to maintain.  Please note the other dates are different days of the week.  For Sunday practices: Sibeal and her family have a pool and have offered its use after the fighting sessions are over.  So, please bring your swim suit and enjoy!  The only requirement is that the parents must stay and supervise their children

June: 4th (Mon), 10th (Sun), 18th (Mon), 28th (Thurs)

July:
2nd (Mon), 12th (Thurs), 16th (Mon), 22 (Sun)
August:
12th (Sun) and *26th ( Sun)
*the 26th is our end of the summer potluck.  Our fighters enjoy each others company (and the parents like to chat as well!) and this gives them a relaxed chance to spend the last summer practice together!

Two Places:

Hello all,

I have some general questons on persona and name origin.

I already have my name approved but I wanted to build my persona around
my name. I know there was an Eleanor of Sudley in 1361 but for origins
in my last name Ravenild I cannot find anything. I know it came from
Reaney's book Dictionary of Names or something like that. Are there
some other sources online since I cannot get this book of Reaney's?

I do have the questionare from some source. I can say for now that an
Eleanor lived in Sudley, but as for the last name, not sure yet. Can
someone help me on this?

Remember when developing a persona you aren't recreating a person
who actually lived. Instead you are creating someone who could have
lived in the period of the SCA. That is, by Corpora, Pre 17th
century pretty much anywhere in the world. The further you get away
from Europe though the less likely you are to find others like your
persona.

If you're going to limit your persona around your name, a very
common and some would say wise decision, you can be from anywhere
and anytime (pre 17th century) where your name(s) were known, or
likely, to have existed. You are not stuck with just the specific
town/village/city you have proof it was found in.

Likely if your name was used in a village in France there are other
parts of France as well as Germany and England that perhaps Italy
that used that name. Remember today's borders do NOT replecate well
borders in period.

Those are some general answers.

I'll leave it to someone who does names and places to answer more
specifically. You can also ask for help from your groups herald.
Even if they don't know the answer, they are likely to have handy
resources to help you find the answers.

Best of Luck

The Shire of Grey Gargoyles has been asked to put on a demo and we are asking for your help.

The demo takes place Wednesday June 20, 2007 in Thornton, Illinois sometime between the time of 10:00 a.m  and 2 p.m.  exact time hasn't been set yet.  This is for a day camp for children.  The staff of the day camp will be responsible for the children, not those scadians at the demo.

As you can imagine it has been difficult to find people for this time of day.  If you can come help please do!

My deputy Chatelaine Olivia an Bheithir called Livy is coordinating and handling this Demo.  While Livy is not well known in the local group she is a long time Scadian and was the Chatelaine for the Barony of Setmore Swamp for some time.  Please help her make this a very succesful demonstration!

The Day Camp does understand that we are a volunteer organization and that our resources are limited.  They have requested the following areas to be at the demo if we can:

In their words...

Fighting/Fencing demo
Pottery
Cooking (we cannot have a live flame inside the building, but we do have a fridge and grilling facilities in our pavillion and the kids love to eat.  haha  We would be happy to purchase food supplies.)
Gaming
Leather working
Paper Making
Riddles
Toy making
Drama/comedy

I would love to hear about a wonderfully succesful demo and help to grow the SCA in this underserved areas.

The day camp information is:

Greetings to the Hall....

It seems that the messenger I had sent some time ago met with an
unfortunate demise, and my missive regarding an Arts & Science
display at the event known as Border Skirmish is undelivered.

~hrumpf~

Therefore, I, Lady Deonysia, do most humbly send once more this
gentle message :)

There will once again be an Arts & Sciences display at Border
Skirmish! Because of the lateness of this message, I will gladly
except not only new works, but also works in progress, and
previously displayed items. There will be a populace bean count
and a prize given!

We do not require documentation of your items, but brief
descriptions are always helpful and are encouraged. You can earn an
extra bean by including the Pirate theme of this years event.

The display will take place in the Hall and items are to be brought
in by 11am on Saturday. Populace viewing and voting will end at
4pm, and we ask that your items be picked up by 5pm.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, and again, my
apologies for not knowing my original message did not deliver until
now.

Folks,

The end of the U of Chicago semester is coming up, so this is our last dance
practice for our current space and schedule. We're going to make it a bit of an
occasion, so we are encouraging folks to come in garb. If anyone would like to
bring snacks, or anything else to add to the festivities, please do.

We have been trying to get an estimate of attendance for the summer, so that we
can set our schedule. If you haven't been coming to dance practice currently,
but think you would be able to during the summer, please let me know off-list.

**Location and Schedule**

Schedule: Tues, May 29, 7 to 9 pm

Location: University of Chicago Campus, Burton-Judson dormitory, 1005 E. 60th
Street.

We are in the Lounge, which is on the far side of the building. Go across the
1st courtyard into the second, and diagonally across the second and up the
stairs (about where the "L" in "Law" is on the map).

Representative, Caillech (Caitlin) on her cell (510) 520-0969, and she'll help
you out.

You do not need to bring a partner to dance...
Everyone from the Chicago region (and beyond) is invited...
You may dress in street clothes or in garb...

I've just moved here from An Tir, and I realized as I looked at the event calendar that I have no idea what events are good to attend, which ones are small, which are large, what sorts of activities to expect...

So, what events are good to attend?  What are _you_ going to this summer?  Why do you choose those events to attend?

Welcome to the area,

There are a lot of different events with a lot of different activities and attractions. I will be going to Border Skirmish to help with the brewing and vinting activities scheduled for the day. Border Skirmish is growing every year, and is a fun event to attend if you are into Camping, Brewing, Fighting, A&S and socializing. It is possible that this year's attendance might be a little light due to some funky scheduling rearrangements on the Kingdom Calendar. Still, it should be a fun time.

There are so many different events, it would be best to hear what you are interested in, and then go from there.

Hi Beatrice,

This weekend is Ragnarok Rampage - it is usually a small event but fun.  I will probably be going to that one.  It is about an hour or so outside of Chicago.  They also had a bardic circle last year and had some games people played but I can't remember what they were.

Jubilee (6/15) is about 3 - 3.5 hours away.  It is a combination event and demo /ren faire.  The SCA has it's own camping area up the hill away from the ren faire.  Non-SCA people can come to the ren faire area for the day.  There are booths - some of which are worked by SCA people, a parade that the SCA marches in, fighting and usually a feast.

Border Skirmish (6/23) is about an hour or so north of Chicago.  It is usually a larger event with fighting, fencing and A&S.  It is a camping event.  They are going to have a feast with roast pork as part of it.  There will be classes and an A&S display as well.  It is a war between the Middle kingdom and Northshield (the kingdom that starts at the border of Wisconsin and Ill).  They will also almost certainly have a bardic circle.

Swine and Roses (6/30) is about 2 hours away from Chicago.  It is a medium sized event.  They will have fighting, fencing, classes, a feast and probably bardic.

Warriors and Warlords is a big event in Wisconsin (Northshield).  It is basically a small war where people camp for 4 days or so.  I have never been.

Other ones people from the area will probably go to is the Feast of St. Ethyl amd Simple Day.  Simple Day is about 4 hours away, has fighting and the weather is usually very hot.  It is an outdoor event.  I haven't been to the Feast of St. Ethyl before but since it is a regional war practice, a lot of the fighters from the area will probably be there.

Hope this helps,

Arrienne

Hi all,

The following is an announcement that has been sent out to the
Northshield Hall and the Nordskogen email list in addition to this
list. Please read it carefully, and note that the autocrat team really
appreciates support from this fabulous Barony, including keeping
questions to a minimum to allow them to focus on getting a new site.

Official Missive:

The SCA has recently learned via a national press release by NCN
campground that it has changed the public nature of its venue. This
revised public image and purpose runs contrary to the nature of
Warriors and Warlords, the Kingdom of Northshield, and the SCA.

Therefore we are discontinuing SCA presence at the NCN site and
Warriors and Warlords will not be held there. We have terminated our
contract with NCN and have removed our event-related property from
the site.

We are actively searching for an alternate site and will make an
announcement as soon as we have more information available. At this
time, we fully expect that WWXIV will occur, just at a new location.

We apologize for any uncertainty or difficulty caused by this
announcement. We realize that many of you will have questions and
concerns; however, we ask that you please be patient. We are
currentlyfocusing all our energies toward finding our new site and
therefore havelimited time to reply to individual emails and calls.

Hello Signora Beatrice,

You can find out more about what activities will be held at an event by going to the Society website and looking at the Events link.
Click on the Middle, and there are links to event websites.

I hope that helps.
