Autistic Bible Church was created in response to a growing population of autistic Christians who find it difficult to attend church. Church can be an overstimulating, overly social place for autistics. Some autistics are ridiculed or shut out of social functions. Others are made to feel selfish and unfriendly because they cannot mingle, let alone participate actively in small groups. Some churches make it mandatory for church members to belong to at least one small group. Failure to do so is often perceived as a lack of commitment or a spiritual deficiency.
Parents of autistic children find it difficult to attend church regularly, if at all. Most churches have nurseries for very young children, but older children are expected either to sit in church or to attend junior church. Many autistic children will need an aide to enable them to sit in a group with other children. Most churches do not have enough people willing or able to do this. This leaves parents to fend for themselves, and this can be very emotionally damaging. When these parents are autistic themselves, the blow can be severe.
The goal of our church is not to criticize conventional churches. It is to be realistic about the significant problems facing autistics who want Christian fellowship but for one reason or another can't seem to achieve it. We are made up of Bible-believing Christians from many denominations. Because "it is common ground to East Orthodox, Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans, Calvinists, and many other Christian groups,"* the Nicene Creed is our statement of faith. This is the glue that holds us all together, despite our different backgrounds.
My hope is that this church will be a safe haven for autistic Christians everywhere. This is to be a place of fellowship, support, prayer, and Christian love for God's autistic people.
Exodus 4:12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
