My only question is, how is it staked and what keeps high
winds from shredding it. Not trying to be the downer here, but looking
for
the practicality side of things.

Good question. It has stake loops about every 3 feet around the
perimeter. (Every vertical seam has a corresponding stake loop.) The
overlap point between sides and bells have several spots to stake, as it's
a weak point. That'll be plenty even in bad weather, because the tent
form itself is designed to shed wind and water. (We left it up all night
in windy Oklahoma and it was fine.) The high peak, A construction, and
rounded bells are VERY weatherworthy, though I don't know if it will be
quite as nice as yurt that way.

It looks a tad precarious in the pic partly because the side poles are
still just a tad too long & because we are using cheapo orange plastic
stakes instead of good ones when setting it up in the front yard. OTOH,
we absolutely cannot leave the sides up in a high wind. It'd take off
like a sail. I think, anyway.

You're welcome, on both counts!

Whenever someone mentions *anything*, the first thought that comes
to my mind is "I wonder if I can find it online?", hence the
obnoxiously huge pile of bookmarks occupying my computer :o)

Joan the non-camping Harper asked:
>>>Are "Pavillions" actual you-sleep-and-eat-in-it tents,
or are they just very glamourous sunshades for day and
you go sleep somewhere else at night?

Depends on the event. We went with the out of period (Civil War/French
Revolution period) raisable sides so that we could use it as a list side
pavilion, and also because it seriously increases air flow, good for hot
summer weather. So, we'll camp in it for a week at Pennsic, but for a
daytrip event we would put it up as a sunshade.

The mention of your husband being a "wood person" reminded me to ask
a question.

I have been searching around looking for the easiest/quickest way to
take the finish off my newly acquired wood bowls ($2 for 7 bowls at
the local thrift store...I couldn't resist!) The shellac(?) is worn
and cracked in places and I would like to get rid of it all together
and get down to the natural wood.

I want to stay away from chemical solutions since we will be eating
out of them...so I fear that sanding is my only choice <sigh>
Has anyone had experience refinishing bowls or have any suggestions
as to the easiest way to sand? (I am hoping someone suggests some
sort of power tool, as the idea of hand sanding 7 bowls does *not*
sound like a lot of fun!)

Ooh, so jealous! I have a jigsaw and a non-working drill. My step father has
an amazing shop in a three car garage, but that's 13 hours away. Oh, well, some

Greeting all,

Kass McGann has some new additions to her website
http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/

She is now offering custom-made corsets! They are original designs,
inspired by historical corsets and stays. Since it's Kass, she also
offers exacting replicas of the originals and no man-made fabrics will
ever enter her workshop. : )

Also, she's added sections on 17th and 18th century clothing. I'm
rather pleased that she chose to use my cartridge pleating
instructions in the 17th century section.

She's just thrilled that her beginning garb pages have converted
another one to the ways of gussets and gores.

Last night as I was sitting in bed watching one of
those ghastly "forensic science" tv shows that I'm so
hooked on, Bruce walked in from his shop and told me
to close my eyes and hold out my hands. What dropped
into my eager clutches was a lovely new spindle! It's
his first one and I love it ... it just has a very
nice "action" - the whorl must be just the right
weight or something. I'm a beginning spinner and I
had no idea it could be so effortless.

I am making some of these after pennsic ( before, If I have time )
I love my new Lathe! ( Hi Madinia! )

( I just bartered a days worth of computer repair for the spring shearing of
a beautiful merino ram, the staple on this wool is near 11 inches!!! I'll
shoot the first pirson who approaches this stuff with a set of cards. This
stuff is slated for the finest Worsted I can make!!)

The best cheap tool for the purpose is a device that I call a flap sander.
It is kind of like a sanding disk that you chuck up into the drill. Instead
of a round flat disk, it is composed of sandpaper stacked circumferentially
around the disk.
http://woodworker.com/cgi-bin/fullpres.exe?PARTNUM=113-666&DF=113-666#113-66
6

this might work as well, but might be harsher to the wood:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=45576

The best way to use it, IMHO would be to put the drill in a vise, and hold
the bowl, but you can certainly go the otherway.

Then get some mineral oil ( the food grade stuff they sell as a laxative in
drug stores), rub it in, wait ten mins, and then wipe as much of it off as
you can. it preserves the wood, and you don't taste it. the amount that
comes off into the food is negligible, and you aren't affected by it. I
speak from experience.

Worsted as in actual fabric? I'm quite thoroughly
dazzled by people who can spin something fine enough
to weave. I'm feeling enormously proud of myself that
I can manage to spin a reasonably even "sport-weight"
yarn.

...and speaking of plotting... I have been searching
for an angle to get my husband more involved in SCA.
Trying to tempt him with garb has failed miserably.
Bruce's fashion guru is Norm Abrams who has some
woodworking show on tv. The uniform is jeans and a
plaid shirt which is a bit taut over the belly. Maybe
if I could persuade Bruce that there is competitive
woodworking in SCA, he'd be all over that!!

Exactly.

That is the eventual plan.
See my mundane family were very much involved in the East Anglian Worsted
manufacture in the Elizabethan and Tudor Eras.

So this is kind of an homage to my family history.

I have done a considerable maount of research, and will be making the
various equipment myself according to that research.

Plans are for
fleece combs
Spinning Wheel and Spindles
measuring wheel
Warping frame
Loom and shuttles
Fullering mill (! yes a fullering mill... Turn with a hand crank instead of
water power though)
Shears
cut and handsew a sample garment, using flat felled seams.

Sort of "Sheep to Shirt"

But this is a long term project.
I will not dye this wool. it has SUCH a beautiful silvery white shiokmmert
that I think it would be a crime to change that.

Elias

Well, after Pennsic, maybe I could get his opinion one rhe pne part of this bed
that's still stumping me. He'd probably be most comfortable in either
Elizabethan venetians and a simple whirt, or Norse trews and short tunic.

...and speaking of plotting...
