The Austin Monorail Project is a non-profit organization that believes that the current direction of Capitol Metro's Rapid Transit Project, i.e., that of favoring light rail, is the wrong solution for Austin, and that concerned citizens can make a difference in getting Austin on the right 'track' for a rapid transit solution.
As you probably know, light rail was narrowly defeated in the November 2000 election. Austin Capitol Metro recently instituted a study called the Rapid Transit Project which is dedicated to 'improve the mobility of greater Austin area residents by providing means of travel not limited to the automobile'. While we agree with the goals of this project, we believe that the approach favored by this study, light rail, is the wrong solution for Austin.
Transit by light rail is slow, is interfered with by surface traffic, and may adversely affect nearby residential areas. Since light rail usually operates at 'grade' (street-level), fatal accidents with pedestrians and vehicles can and do occur. Austin needs and deserves a better solution! Monorails have significant advantages over light rail:
-Monorail is Fast, Safe, and Reliable
-Monorail provides 'Guaranteed Mobility'
-Monorail does not interfere with, nor is interfered with by surface traffic.
-Modern Monorail has a zero-fatality safety record; in contrast, light rail has had 81 deaths from 1990-1997.
-Monorails are proven technology
-Monorails may be automated, and as such, have reduced operating expenses. Because of this, they are the only form of mass transit that has the possiblity of operating at a profit.
