DID YOU KNOW THAT.
60% of all residential water used in Los Angeles County is consumed by the landscape, most of it for lawns.
More herbicides per acre are applied on lawns than on the fields of agribusiness.
In the U.S. an estimated 7 million birds are killed yearly by lawn-care pesticides.
On average, 7,600 Americans are injured every year using lawn mowers, about the same number as firearms.
The EPA estimates that a gasoline powered lawn mower emits 11 times the air pollution of a new car for each hour of operation.
5% of all greenhouse gasses are produced by the mowing of lawns.
THE HISTORY OF LAWNS.
The popularity of the green and lush lawn came to prominence in 18th century England where the abundance of water made care of lawns negligible. For British society, a lawn was simply a status symbol. The idea of a lawn is an old world elitist tradition.
In America, before and during World War II, residential landscaping was much more sensible. Over 40% of fruits and vegetables consumed were homegrown. Post-war, the rise of the middle class and the pursuit of the American Dream led to the increased popularity of the home lawn over the home garden.
Green lawns look fine when there is plenty of water to go around, however here in Los Angeles they just make no sense. They do not attract butterflies, hummingbirds, nor beneficial insects. They hardly get used for their intended purpose of playing or lounging around.
We live in a very arid climate. A lush green lawn will not co-exist with the looming water issues we face.
Reducing the size or all together eliminating a lawn lessens dependence on distant imported water.
Lawns use too many resources to justify their existence.
Stop having to replace your
lawn every few years.
A garden in not only grass, just as a forest is not only trees.
Wall to wall lawn is not a garden.
