We are going to have a different type of program at tonight's ARC
meeting.

Instead of a presentation, we're going to play a game called "Stump
the Panel", in which a panel of "experts" tries to answer your ham
radio related questions.

Please bring the thorniest questions you can think of and let's all
have fun learning.

See you tonight.

UPDATE: Airwaves Key to Internet Buildout -FCC Official

  Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

(Updates with additional details)

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The popularity of smart phones like Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone or Palm Inc's (PALM) Pre will put a crunch on wireless capacity when the government is looking for wireless services, in addition to cable and fiber optic lines, to expand high-speed Internet services.

Blair Levin, a well known telecom analyst who is leading the FCC's broadband plan effort, said Wednesday current spectrum holders will have to justify their holdings or risk losing some to make room for suppliers of high-speed Internet.

Companies and agencies that hold licenses to frequencies tend to want to hang onto it, but Levin warned that licensees should be prepared to justify their ownership.

"I want you to be worried," he told the executives. "I'm worried. My way of coping with it is to make other people worry. That's actually the intellectual process we should go through."

The FCC is collecting volumes of written and oral comments on Internet access, and spectrum availability has emerged as a clear necessity.

"There's pretty much consensus in the record, there's not enough of it, Levin told telecom executives and lobbyists at their regular Udwin Breakfast Group.

Smart phone users generally eat up far more cellular minutes and bandwidth than people with more traditional cell phones.

Levin's comments should be good news to wireless companies like T-Mobile USA or smaller competitors to giants like Verizon Wireless or AT&T Inc. (T), who have been angling for access to more airwaves.

Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) and Vodafone PLC (VOD.) T-Mobile is a unit of Deutsche Telekom ADR (DT).

It isn't clear where the needed airwaves will surface. The U.S. government, namely the Defense Department, holds a sizable chunk. Industry insiders say the government's airwaves could be more efficiently used in the private sector.

Legislation is pending in Congress to catalogue how all the wireless airwaves are being used.

Companies and agencies that hold licenses to frequencies tend to want to hang onto it, but Levin warned that licensees should be prepared to justify their ownership.

Meanwhile, two other government agencies - the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Commerce Department - are reviewing thousands of applications for some of the $7.2 billion in stimulus money set aside by Congress to build out new high-speed Internet lines and services.

Levin has already stated that $7.2 billion won't be nearly enough to blanket the country with Internet access, but the hope is that the grant money can encourage companies to seek Internet subscribers in areas they wouldn't go on their own.

The FCC is drafting a plan, due in February, that will detail just how the government can ensure that everyone in the country has some way to wire up.

The FCC has held dozens of meetings seeking input from representatives of all facets of the telecom sector and government. Field meetings will be held outside Washington this fall.

Something we all need to know.

Blood  Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator,  the Tongue
image001.jpg

I  will continue to forward this every time it  comes around!

STROKE: Remember  the 1st Three Letters.... S. T. R.

STROKE  IDENTIFICATION:

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured  everyone that she was fine (they offered to call  paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over  a brick because of her new shoes.

They  got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of  food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the  evening

Jane's husband called later  telling everyone that his wife had been taken to  the hospital -
(at 6:00  pm  Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the  signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with  us today. Some don't die. They end up in a  helpless, hopeless condition instead.

It  only takes a minute to read this...

A  neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke  victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the  effects of a stroke...totally. He said  the trick was getting a stroke recognized,  diagnosed, and then getting the patient  medically cared for within 3 hours, which is  tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE

Thank  God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR  . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a  stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately,  the lack of awareness spells disaster. The  stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage  when people nearby fail to recognize the  symptoms of a stroke.

Now doctors say a  bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three  simple questions:

S  *Ask  the individual to SMILE.

T  *Ask  the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE  (Coherently)

(i.e. It is sunny out  today.)

R  *Ask  him or her to RAISE BOTH  ARMS.

If  he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these  tasks, call emergency number immediately  and describe the symptoms to the  dispatcher.

New  Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your  Tongue

NOTE:  Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the  person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue  is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the  other,   that is  also an indication of a  stroke.

A  cardiologist says if everyone who gets this  e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that  at least one life will be saved.

I  have done my part. Will  you?

Whoa, slow down there....

Do you not like your 706? Do you know why it stopped working?

Maybe there is a member of the club that would be able to give a quick
glance and validate the problems. Also Skyland repair in Chamblee
repairs that radio. I would try and get it repaired before I go out and
spend $700 on a used radio.

This is a reminder.

The monthly meeting of the "Second Sunday Tech Session" will be
Sunday, September 13th starting at 1pm at Tanyard Creek Park. The
park in located on Collier Road between Peachtree Road and Northside
Drive in Atlanta. Weather permitting setup will start at 1pm and the
last stations will probably be packing up around dark, 8pm or so.

Those of you that have been there before know the easiest place to
park is along Walthall Drive that runs along the western side of the
park. There is a small parking area along Collier but it tends to be
full all the time - holds maybe eight cars.

There will be several stations up and running but all are welcome to
bring a radio to set up their own. Antenna experimentation will be
happening, you can count on it, and perhaps a few HF antennas will be
constructed at the outing (I have plans for one I want to try).

Snacks and soft drinks will be supplied and since there are fast food
places nearby food runs are possible (and common!) If you want to
bring something to share feel free. If you have any special dietary
concerns bring your own to be safe. Also, bring a chair if you can as
they're usually in short supply.

For new hams this is a good opportunity to meet some folks and see how
things are done "in the rough". Most all the antennas you will see
are homebrew (self-built). Since there is no AC power available in
this park everyone will be running on "emergency power" - batteries or
on small generators.

Talk in will be on the Atlanta Radio Club repeater (146.820 + pl
146.2) and the national simplex calling frequency 146.520 MHz.

This will probably be the last outing for this group till May 2010 so
come on out and have fun playing radio.

See you there and then.

In the October 2009 issue of Popular Mechanics, Glenn Reynolds writes this story:

How Self Reliance Can Get You Through Any Disaster

Our complex world is more disaster-prone than ever-but there's plenty we can do about it. Self-reliant, community-minded individuals (with appropriate skills) can help people get through a major event when all else fails. Instapundit's Glenn Reynolds tells us how.

From the article:

"A self-reliant attitude is good, but skills help mightily, too. Citizen training is available through the Red Cross, Community Emergency Response Teams and Neighborhood Emergency Response Teams. One underappreciated resource is the amateur radio community. Acquire a ham radio license (American Radio Relay League, ) and you can become a major resource if a disaster strikes. It's fun, too. "

There was also an article in the 9/12/09 AJC entitled “River drill rattles nation’s capitol” that should remind us all how of critically important it is to repeat “This is not an emergency. This is only a training exercise” frequently during all of our emergency response (e.g., ARES) training exercises. If anybody missed it, let me know; I have it on a USB stick.

Does anyone have a Sony PCV-RS320 desktop and/or the restore disks for
that box? I need the disks to restore a friend's computer.

Thanks,

Question of the night:

How many HF contacts do you have in your log?

It was a good chance for people to talk not just about raw numbers but some contacts that were special to them.  K4JPC had over 58,000 in his LOTW account, some folks just had 1 or a handful at field day. Whether it was a rare DX contact on 10M or getting Japan by surprise, most folks seem to have some memorable times working HF.

The net closed at 20:30 local time.

Thanks for putting this together. I didn't take any equipment, but there was
still plenty to do. Seems everyone had fun.

Norm, wa4zxv
