We are Compacters from the Atlanta, Georgia area committed to a from the consumer grid, an idea that was born in 2007 from the original group in San Francisco.
The Compact has several aims (more or less prioritized below):
To go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of disposable consumer culture and to support local businesses, farms, etc. -- a step that, we hope, inherits the revolutionary impulse of the Mayflower Compact
To reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er).
To simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)
We've agreed to follow two principles:
Don't buy new products of any kind (from stores, web sites, etc.)
Recognizing that what is essential to one age group may be unnecessary to another, we expect that through discussion, we will each come to our own decision about how to implement the Compact into our own lives. For example: a younger person such as Rachel may think certain drugs are an "optional" treatment, while an older person may see them as essential for the quality of their life.
