Hi Sherri

I have just started working on my own family tree. I have worked my way
back from my own life in Canada to my Great-Great Grandfather Paul
SALZL who emigrated from Wallern, Austria sometime in the 1800's.

It was from the website of Konrad UNGER that I somehow found my way to
this excellent e-group recently. I hope his website helps you get
"into" Austria like it has me. Konrad UNGER has an excellent site and
he has his family tree posted.

http://members.xoom.com/_XMCM/kunger/index.htm

I don't see any Anthony's there but maybe it will get you started.

Good Luck

Ron Salzl
Researching: SALZL, WEINZETL, LEIER, WEINHANDL,
1800's(Wallern, Illmitz, Pamhagen, Burgenland)
Emmigrated to Minnisota, and South Dakota USA.

My grandfather Andrew Marushi came to this country around 1900 (?) from
Austria. My father always told me that this was not the correct spelling,
that people at Ellis Island spellled it Marushi but the name was longer.
Anyway, Andrew met and married Julia Sova, also from Austria, and finally
settled in Logan, West Virginia. I have had absolutely no success in tracing
the "Marushi" family back to Vienna. All I know is, as a young boy, my
grandfather "traveled across a big mountain, down into a valley to Vienna to
hear music in a beer hall." I also know that the government contacted my
father after WWII wanting to buy the "Marushi farm" to use it as a Catholic
convent. In order to sell the farm, my father would have had to have
traveled to Vienna to sign papers, but he could not financially afford to do
so. Can someone help me find my family in the old country????

What have you looked into sofar yourself? Tell us a little about how you'd like to start your research. You must have some idea! In no time at all did I locate the following info from the KENTUCKY Archives on-line by using the attached search engine! Give it a shot yourself .... :-) Name: MARUSHI, Andrew Died: 27 Feb 1949 County of Death: Boyd County of Residence: Boyd Age at Death: 45 Years Volume: 49 Certificate: 04126 Take a look at what else you can find on MARUSHI on the web first. Try to use the attached file to get you going or use the ancestry search box at http://mygen.tsx.org Do you know the other eight MARUSHI from the US Social Security Death Index? There are 11 MARUSHI in the US on-line phone and address index. Have a chat with a few of them, write them a letter, visit them, etc. and let us know what you come up with on dates and names, how you did get your results. Have fun and good luck!

My great grandfather Jacob A. Malecek emigrated to the US in 1850 with
his son Joseph (my grandfather born 1848) and daughter Mary (born
18460. On the 1900 Federal Census Jacob lists his place of birth as
Hungary and Mother Tongue as Bohemian. I have not been able to
determine his exact place of birth.

In January 1911 Joseph was interviewed by the St. Louis Post Dispatch
newspaper about two painting he had been given by his grandfather.
Joseph's grandfather had visited the family about 1860 in St. Louis and
had given the paintings to his grandson Joseph (while Joseph was still
just a young boy).

The newspaper interview indicates that Joseph's grandfather acquired
the paintings from a woman in gratitude for being humanely treated by
this Officer in command of an Austrian detachment fighting against the
French. Unfortunately the article does not mention the Officer's name
and therefore we don't have a given name. The last war between Austria
and France was in 1814 - 1815.

My question is whether or not there would be military records for this
period which would contain information about an Officer with a surname
of Malecek?

I am new to the list and much in need of help. My grandfather, Peter VAN
DOLZER, told his children he left his Austrian home at the age of 12, stowed
on board a ship, was discovered after setting sail. He was told he would be
returned home upon his arrival in America. To avoid this, he jumped ship in
New York harbor, swam ashore to begin his American odyssey. I have found
evidence to contradict his story. His naturalization declaration stated his
arrival occurred 13 May, 1907, which would make him 18 years. He maintained
he did not know his father's name due to a railroad accident that took his
father's life. With the help of a wedding post card that was sent to my
grandfather( came from his sister, Magdelena, still in Austria, wedding took
place in Glodnitz), we discovered she was born to an unwed mother, a Maria
DOLZER, a farmer's daughter of Laas. His sister married Alois STROHHEISEL.
I have written to two lengthy letters to officials in Austria with no
response. If I can discover my grandfather's baptismal record (Catholic) we
can unlock this mystery of where and when he was born. The complete details
of his verbal history and what we are finding are more complex than I should
probably explain here. If anyone can advise me as to "next steps" I would
sincerely appreciate it.

Greetings from Texas,
Mary Anna

My gr-gr grandfather was from Alsace-Lorraine.

His name was Franz Joseph Ruetsch who married Ann Marie VonSchmidder.
Franz Joseph Ruetsch was a potter.
The family lived in Alkirch, Alsace France in the 1800's.
We do not know any family history on this surname prior to 1822
when a son Louis was born.
Rudolph Ruetsch was my gr-grandfather born in 1839. He
was a potterlike his father before him. Rudolph and his wife
Elizabeth Heil Ruetsch came to America in 1867.

My sisters and I would like to travel next year to Europe
searching our roots. I welcome suggestions on how to begin.

start with a visit to an LDS genealogy library. They have a wealth of info
including immigration records and even birth records for the area you
mention. With that as a start you will have much more info prior to your

Start with a visit to an LDS genealogy library. Look at the immigration
records for the time period in question. If he came in thru normal
channels he will be listed along with his place of birth. If you find him
listed you can work back from there.

Hi - I am researching the family of Liebor and Anna Hauptman[n]. I have been
told that they came from Grafendorf which was near Kaiserdorf in Austria in
1880 and emigrated to Iowa. A brother apparently went to Texas. I
understand that there are two Grafendorfs in Austria. I have only been able
to find Grafendorf near Graz and have not been able to find Kaiserdorf. Any
information on Grafendrof, Kaiserdorf or the Hauptmann family would be
appreciated.

Hi everyone,

I live in Vienna, Austria, where the nazi supposedly are back in power...

This is to let You know, that there is a different Austria and a different
public here. I'm one of those who are on the streets every day,
demonstrating against the new government. There have been thousands out
there daily for the past two weeks. We usually walk 5 to 7 miles, the City's
main routes are being covered. Thousands of people wave and cheer their
solidarity out the windows...
This coming Saturday, Feb. 19th, we are going to have the largest
demonstration ever in this second republic. It's a huge event and people
from all over will come and join. More than 200 000 thousand participants
are expected.

The threats and sanctions worldwide may be aimed at the fascists here, but
they hit all Austrians, therefor they are no more than a hypocritical tool
of superficial politics.
We humans have the ability to differentiate: why not use it!! This is a
value I'm also walking for, and only through differentiation we can come to
terms with the past, and there is a lot to come to terms with in this
country, I can tell You.

For the Austrian self-finding and self-defining process the current
situation is extremly valuable. There are a lot of things here, which always
had been taken for granted, thus certain societal processes had slowed down
to a still-stand. Post-war Austria was built on the myth of having been
hitler's first victim, the socalled 'Opfermythos'. It's time to overcome
this once and for all.

All this cannot happen without a functioning public. There are discussions
almost everyday now, in theaters, at speaker's corners on the streets etc.
Things are in change, but it will take time.

It's a sunny day in Vienna,
M.J.C.

Hello, I have just joined this group and am researching my father's
family who came from Freudenthal 8 in the parish of St. Leonhard bei
Freistadt in Oberösterreich. My father Anton was born on June 8, 1904
to Johanna Höller (b. 18/04/1864 Oberarzing6, St. Leonhard, d.
30/07/1914
and Franz Brandstätter (b.02/10/1859 in Erdmannsdorf,d. 28/10/1922 in
Freistadt). Franz Brandstätter was married to another
woman (name unknown) and had one child, who I believe was named
Johann. He also had a brother named Johann (b. about 1864 and still
alive
in the 1930s. Franz and Johann were the children of Josef Brandstätter
(b. 27/01/1829) and Katherina Kästner (b. 13/10/1832, m. 19/10/1857,, d.
03/05/1893).

Johanna was the daughter of Johann Höller (b. 27/05/1812) and Rosina
Frühwirth (b. 28/02/1830 Oberarzing 6, St. Leonhard, m. 28/07/1852). I
believe that Rosina had a sister Josefa who was Johanna's godmother. In
addition to my father, Johanna had several other children Johanna
(b. 1893), Franz (b. 24/06/1899)and a twin who died at birth, Rosa
(b. 29/08/1900), and Ignatz (b. 19/07/1905). All but Johanna were the
acknowledged children of Franz Brandstätter. Franz, Anton, and Ignatz
all came to Canada; Rosa and Johanna stayed in Austria.

I would like to contact anyone who might be doing research on these
names
in the province of Oberösterreich, especially if there might be a family
connection.

Start with a visit to an LDS family history center near you. They have
volunteers that can give you tips on how to proceed as well as microfilm
records going back to 1828 for most of Austria on births, deaths and
marriages. Additionally they have immigration records that have a lot of
info in them as well. Finally, any letters to Austria should be in German.
Once again, the LDS library can give you forms in German to request
information and also supply mailing addresses. Good luck.

To the Austrian researchers - I have changed Internet providers and my new Email address is:  cdan@...

I have read your messages with interest.  The advice to first check out the LDS research center is a good one, though I personally came up empty handed.  The people were friendly and helpful but together we were unable to find the information I was looking for.  Frustrating.

Carolyne and members of this eGroup!

When there is a change of email address from which you will be posting
messages to this eGroup, please make sure you update your user ID to reflect
that or the eGroup system will not know that you are a member here and refuse
your messages.

You can make these changes by going into MY SPACE, USER INFO and editing the
information there.

Thanks, Franz

Hi listers,
I am new to this group and want to present my genealogy page with over
450 persons mainly from Austria, but also containing my ancestors from
Hungary, Slovenia and Bohemia. Have a look at http://members.aon.at/di.
burian/genealogy.htm
Any questions or comments are welcome.
Good hunting
Gerhard

hello, I would like to tell you about the families I'm searching for;
My husband's maternal Great Grandfather's name was Joseph Shima, b.1817
in Veinna, Austria. He migrated to America and in his 45 year, he
married Mary Prohaska (Prochazka) who also was born in Veinna in 1843.
Her father had brought her to America at 11 year's of age after her
mother had passed away. We have very good records of them here in
America but haven't been able to trace them in Veinna. I have been in
touch with the LDS Family Library. Can you suggest What I should do
next? I would appreciate your input. Thank you.
                                                    Betty
