The purpose of this project is family history. Our family has been defined by our shared yDNA. This is the chromosome passed from father to son, father to son, without mixing with the mother's DNA.

Certain tiny mutations occur over time and sharing the same mutations is what brings us together and defines our group.

We have found our yDNA tells us not only who are relatives are within the last few hundreds of years there is also information that tells how we link up with the rest of mankind all the way back to "Adam" in Africa about 40,000 years ago.

That long term record is interesting to us. We seem to all be in Haplogroup Q1b defined by SNP M378. Our ancient ancestral heritage seems to go back through Pakistan and then to Siberia. This creates fascinating discussions in our group.

Here we are interested in anything relating to the Q1b Haplogroup. The Jewish_Q project at Family Tree DNA is focused on those within a Genetic Distance of less than 10 from the mode of our group.

It appears that all of us have Ashkenazi (northern European) Jewish ancestors. Apparently about 5% of all Ashkenazi Jewish people are Q1b.

Regardless of your current religion if you are one of our close matches you probably had a Jewish ancestor.

Generally the participants here belong to the Jewish_Q group hosted by FamilyTreeDNA and belong to a larger Q-DNA study administered by Rebekah Canada at the same site.

You are invited to participate with your questions, answers, and information.

Suggestions are always welcome.
