The Black Ball...is ON!
The Asheville Art Initiative, an informal assemblage of local artists, is
producing a Black Ball to be held on Saturday, June 20th at The Grove House at
11 Grove Street and at other downtown venues.
"There is a time honored tradition in Asheville of a summer fund raising Art
Party which many people look forward to, and want to participate in," says Brian
Kirk, downtown Asheville resident, merchant, Fine Art Photographer and member of
the Asheville Art Initiative.
"Since the Asheville Area Arts Council has 'dropped the ball' this year, we have
decided to place-hold the tradition by producing a fun event coordinated by
local artists, to benefit several local arts organizations. The economy may be
stalled, but the joyful energy of our Asheville artists is still very much
alive. As many local businesses also benefit from such an event – the clothing
shops, the costume shop, caterers, restaurants and venue owners, we consider
this a local 'stimulus package'. But, primarily, we would like to have an art
party with ART, and include individual artists who will be able to promote their
own work and present themselves during this event."
In addition to displayed visual art, edible art, spoken art, participatory
healing art, and performance art in the clubs, artists will also line the
sidewalks between participating venues.
Brian adds, "Following the unconventional spirit of the Dadaists, the Asheville
Art Initiative will employ the element of surprise in this event. Watch for
more event propaganda at www.ashevilleblackball.com ."
Net proceeds from the event will be donated to Arts 2 People and the Black
Mountain College Museum.
The main parties will be held at Eleven on Grove, Scandals and the Boiler Room.
There will be catered hor d'oevres, live music and performances, and a cash bar.
Attire will be elegant, imaginative or costume, in the color black. Ticket
prices will start at an affordable $25.00. Participating artists and performers
will attend free of charge. Tickets will be available for purchase at Eleven on
Grove, Scandals, the Boiler Room, Va Va Vooom at 36 Battery Park Avenue, Harvest
Records, Static Age as well as the Ashevilleblackball.com website.
We still need artists for the event !!!
