NEW ONLINE POETRY RESOURCES LISTINGS THIS WEEK

From the Fishouse
Founded in 2004 by Matt O'Donnell and Camille T. Dungy, From the Fishouse is an IRS-registered non-profit that promotes the oral tradition of poetry. Our free online audio archive showcases emerging poets (defined for this purpose as poets with fewer than two published books of poetry at the time of submission) reading their own poems, as well as answering questions about poetry and the writing process. Our mission is to use online technology and other media to provide the public with greater access to the voices of emerging poets, and to provide an educational resource to students and teachers of contemporary poetry.

PoetrySpeaks.com
We have created an online poetry community at PoetrySpeaks.com, one where poets and lovers of spoken word can gather to experience poetry in exciting new ways. The goal and purpose behind PoetrySpeaks.com is to create a space where poetry can be discovered and rediscovered.

POETRY SUPER HIGHWAY BOOKSTORE
.
Featured this week in the PSH Bookstore:

The Black Automaton by Douglas KearneyThe Black Automaton by Douglas Kearney

"First, you have to see Douglas Kearney's visual poems, which cheekily diagram cultural memes as if they were parts of speech (as they are). The Black Automaton has its share of sharp, tender lyrics, too... these exploit the political possibilities of puns and the way meanings hinge on inexact resemblance. Kearney's poems tweak and skewer pop culture and literary sources from Paul Laurence Dunbar to T. S. Eliot to traditional ballads and blues... Kearney's work turns poetic and cultural conventions disquietingly inside out."

..............- CATHERINE WAGNER

From ambivalent animals thriving after Katrina to party chants echoing in a burning city, The Black Automaton troubles rubble, cobbling a kind of life. In this collection, bodies at risk seek renewal through violence and fertility, history and myth, flesh and radios.

Dear Community Member:
My name is Katie Griffin, and I am currently recruiting participants for a study on hate crimes and hate crime legislation. Your participation will be helpful in assisting psychologists and society to be aware of what attitudes individuals hold with regard to hate crimes.
I am looking for participants who would be able to devote approximately 30-45 minutes to complete four small online questionnaires. In order to take part in this study, participants must be at least 18 years of age. Participation would be completely voluntary. There is minimal to no physical or psychological risk involved in this study. There will be no payment for participating in this study. However, it would be a great opportunity for you to add to society’s understanding with regard to hate crimes and the reasons behind support or opposition of the associated legislation.
If you would be interested in participating in this study, please go to this link: http://www.surveymo nkey.com/ s.aspx?sm= lLLZSnwRW5jnPPWv I83jMQ_3d_ 3d
You can contact me, the principal investigator of this study, with any questions through email at katie.griffin@ jjay.cuny. edu. You can also contact the research advisor of this study, Dr. Kevin Nadal at (212) 237-8795 or knadal@jjay. cuny.edu.

POETS OF THE WEEK

This week's featured poets are:

Taylor Graham (Placerville, California) is a volunteer search-and-rescue dog handler in the Sierra Nevada. Her poems have appeared in American Literary Review, International Poetry Review, The Iowa Review, The New York Quarterly, Notre Dame Review, Poetry International, Southern Humanities Review, and elsewhere. Her book The Downstairs Dance Floor (Texas Review Press) was awarded the Robert Phillips Poetry Chapbook Prize. Her current project is Walking with Elihu, poems about the American peace activist Elihu Burritt, the Learned Blacksmith (1810-1879).

Dave Waddell (Near Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada) is an amateur award-winning photographer, poet/writer and retired gentleman. He lives about 40 minutes from Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. The Sometimes Girl by Lisa ZaranThe Sometimes Girl by Lisa Zaran

"Distinguished poetic insights, distinguished poetic textures, genuine richness."

...- Duane Locke, Author of seventeen books of poetry
...including Squid's Dark Ink and Watching Wisteria

"Fresh, cutting edge, deeply personal, Zaran's work speaks to the heart. A great read!"

...- Scott C. Holstad, Author of Cells and Artifacts

"These poems-vast in scope-deal with love, loss, pain and laughs; in short, life. Lisa Zaran's work is intensely personal and refreshingly, disarmingly brutal in its self effacing honesty. Like all of us, Lisa Zaran is protean, her poems varying with her humor and moods. We can all get something from these unpretentious vignettes of one woman's life."

...- Rob Walker, South Australian poet, songwriter

"A word, a phrase, a rhyme; this 'sometimes girl' has the right thing to say for all times. Lisa's warm poetry has a unique way of making the reader feel as though the words they are reading are emanating from their own heart. A true gift."

...- Fred Wheeler, Editor, Indie Journal

The First Annual WRITE REAL GOOD Poetry Chapbook Contest
Unlikely Books, the print arm of UnlikelyStories.org, is holding a contest to find one chapbook of superior poetry to add to our 2009 catalog.

When UnlikelyStories.org was founded in 1998, it was the Web's only regular journal of transgressive literature. In 2004, it expanded into a multimedia, eclectic journal of culture, arts, literature, and occasional chapbooks. This year, we’re ramping up chapbook production. Next year, we’ll begin publishing anthologies and full-length manuscripts.

The contest’s winner will receive publication and 20 free copies, additional copies cheap, and a unique marketing campaign including audiovisual “movie trailers,” review copies, and promotion at one of the Web’s longest-running ‘zines. Oh, and $250 cash. All entrants will receive their choice of 2009 Unlikely Books.

So prepare 20-30 pages of poetry, a $15 entry fee, and head over to http://www.unlikelystories.org/ for more information. All manuscripts are due by the new date of Nov. 29th; electronic submissions gladly accepted.

http://www.alqabas.com.kw/Article.aspx?id=546988&date=04112009)

Egypt's Famous Tomb of Tutankhamun Set for 5-Year Renovation Project

CAIRO (AP).- Egypt's famous Tomb of Tutankhamun will undergo a five-year project to clean and restore the lavish wall paintings in the underground chambers of the boy king whose golden mask and artifacts have long awed the world. The project to restore the country's most famous tomb is the latest collaboration between Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Los Angeles-based Getty Conservation Institute, which in the past restored nearby tombs and designed airtight cases to display Egypt's mummies. Since the small, four-roomed tomb and its famous golden burial mask were discovered in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter, observers have noted strange brown spots marring the wall paintings. "I always see the tomb of King Tut and wonder about those spots, which no scientist has been able to explain," said Zahi Hawass, the head of the SCA, in a statement. "Now I am happy that the Getty will look at the tomb and preserve its beautiful scenes," he added. Thousands of ... More

Tales from the Hard Side by Tobias Kobsch Opens at Maerz Galerie
LEIPZIG.- Once upon a time ... - so begin most stories - even Tobias Koebsch s "tales from the hard side", as told in pictures (oil and acrylic on canvas), and in his large pieces (mixed media). Tobias Koebsch (born in 1977 in Dresden) works show scenes that tell of an approaching end. Abandon areas torn apart, demolished, full of debris and sediments the aftermath and remains of an apparently unexpected creeping disaster. Only the traces of people are visible, a T-shirt, a comic book monster, hundreds of colorful cars, symbols of a drive for mobility, piled to dizzying heights forming towers and canyons and everywhere graffi ti - individual messages from someone to somebody. Tbias Koebsch is not scoffi ng at the past, he wants to be a visionary realist. Something must have happened in these lifeless apocalyptical surroundings. What that something is, he leaves to the viewer. He tells another tale; ours, which goes further on. He can live wit ... More

The Cleveland Museum of Art Receives $1.9 Million Grant from Mellon Foundation
CLEVELAND, OH.- The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded The Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) a spendable three-year grant of $450,000 to support the hiring of a curator of Japanese and Korean art, and a matching grant in the amount of $1,500,000 to establish an endowment for the appointment of curators at the assistant or associate level. From the grant, $1.5 million will enable the museum to strengthen its curatorial program with the addition of entry- and mid-level positions to a staff that currently has none. These positions would assist with new exhibition and research opportunities, especially the kind of collaborative object-based research that occurs between curators and conservators ensuring that the museum can contribute more broadly to the field by providing important opportunities for training curators through substantial collection-based work. The grant also allows the museum to reinstate the position of curato ... More

Rodeo for the Sheepish - Ellyn Maybe is an irresistible force. To read or listen to her poetry is to be gently and completely crushed while simultaneously inspired and charmed. The honesty with which she so exquisitely reveals her vulnerabilities, desires and pain is beautiful and rare.
Rodeo for the Sheepish has so many great moments. The first time I listened to it, I was reminded of when I first met her many years ago and how much I liked her and her poetry. One of the stand out tracks on the album, There Were Two Girls Who Looked A Lot The Same, is a perfect example of why one becomes a fan of Ellyn s immediately. I can t understand how anyone could not find an aspect of themselves in that piece. This is what Ellyn does so well and so often in her work and on this album.

Reading Ellyn's poems from the page is one thing but hearing her read them just the way she meant them to be heard is something else altogether. Ellyn has a great sense of humor and reads wonderfully. The musical accompaniment on the album is not mere background filler but a true collaborative effort between Ellyn and the musicians that really works.

Ellyn is a very gifted writer and a true gem.

Mr Dunhill,

Are you sure that it is even possible to predetermine all the components of such works?

This is really neat. I'm wondering if all the components are predetermined for each sculpture or will it vary if you had to make another one?
