I haven't done a full theatre production since To
Kill a Mockingbird, seven years ago. This coming
weekend (starting a week from last night), I'll
be playing assorted hooligans, a scary cop, and
the Emperor's Royal Scribe. Long-time friends Jim
MacRostie (who played Lear in Hampshire
Shakespeare's production that was the first
Shakespeare Alana ever saw, at age 8) and Chris
Rohmann play the Rabbi of Frankfurt and the
Emperor, respectively.

What's most interesting to me is that the main
characters and the situation are real; this is an
actual historical episode of the Church using a
converted Jew as its chief weapon against
German's Jews in the early 16th century. You can
even Google for Johannes Reuchlin and some of the
others--and the politics of the play are very
relevant in this New McCarthyist time we live in.

The press release follows. Northampton Center for the Arts.

Hampshire Shakespeare Company Presents The Premiere Of An Important New Play

Hampshire Shakespeare Company is proud to announce the staging of the
première of an important new play, Burning Words: A History Play, by New
York playwright Peter Wortsman. A story of courage and dedication to the
defense of religious rights, long obscured by the veils of history, this
powerful drama will be performed at the Northampton Center for the Arts at
17 New South Street, Northampton, Massachusetts, at 8:00 PM on November
17-19, 2006. The playwright will be available to discuss the play after the
shows.

In the early 1500s, an era marked by the lingering excesses of the
Inquisition and the initial rumblings of protest by Martin Luther, Emperor
Maximillian I was persuaded by rabidly antisemitic forces to order the
confiscation and destruction of holy Hebrew texts. One German Christian
scholar, Johannes Reuchlin, argued forcefully for their preservation as the
foundations of the Christian faith, adding the “the Jew is as worthy in the
eyes of our Lord God as I am.” His brave stand brought him under attack by
the Catholic hierarchy of the day, but was seconded by eminent scholars,
including Erasmus, von Hutten, and Martin Luther himself. The play tells the
story of Reuchlin’s confrontation with his church and his society in one of
the most religiously turbulent times in European history.

This production is made possible with the support of the German Information
Center, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Boston, The
Interfaith Council of Western Massachusetts, The Jewish Arts & Culture
Initiative of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, WFCR FM, The National Yiddish
Book Center, Hampshire College Center for the Book and Jewish Studies
Program, Smith College Jewish Studies Program and The Office of the Jewish
Chaplain.

Veteran Hampshire Shakespeare actors will flesh out such powerful characters
as Reuchlin himself (Walter Carroll); his nemesis Johannes Pfefferkorn (Dan
Barnes), a Jewish convert to Christianity; the Emperor Maximillian I (Chris
Rohmann); and various other members of the German Catholic hierarchy at the
time. The playwright has been working with director Lucinda Kidder to hone
the action of the play, which has received enthusiastic reviews after two
public readings in the Valley, including its first reading at the
Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies.

Tickets are $25 preferred seating, $15 general admission, $10 for seniors or
students with ID. Discount rates for groups of 10 or more are available. The
Northampton Center for the Arts is handicapped accessible, and there is
parking available at various locations nearby in downtown Northampton. For
reservations and information, leave a message at the Company’s voice mail
number, 413-548-8118.

Peter Wortsman is a playwright and author produced the first English
translation of Reuchlin’s historic defense of the Talmud and other holy
books, Recommendation Whether to Confiscate, Destroy and Burn All Jewish
Books (Mahwah: Paulist Press, 2000). This book on which the play is based,
was the subject of a day-long symposium at New York University in 2001
attended by a wide variety of scholars, clergy, diplomats and publishers.

DR Congo: ICC Hearing Could Pave Way for Court's First Trial
Prosecution Must Pursue More Charges and Perpetrators

(The Hague, November 8, 2006) – The prosecutor for the International
Criminal Court (ICC) must pursue more charges against Congolese
rebel
leader Thomas Lubanga and prosecute others responsible for heinous
crimes in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) if the court is
going
to bring justice to the Congolese people, Human Rights Watch said
today.

Thomas Lubanga Dyilo, who has been in the ICC's custody since March
16, is the former leader of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC),
an
armed group responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity
in
the Ituri region of northeastern DRC. The ICC has charged him with
enlisting and conscripting children as soldiers and using them to
participate actively in the conflict in Ituri. On November 9, the
court
will
begin a crucial hearing in The Hague to determine if there is
sufficient
evidence against Lubanga to move ahead with what would be the ICC's
first-ever trial.

"The hearing to confirm these important charges marks a milestone
for the
victims in Ituri," said Géraldine Mattioli, international justice
advocate
at
Human Rights Watch. "But these charges only begin to address the
horrific acts committed by the UPC. If the ICC is going to have an
impact
on ending impunity in Ituri, the prosecutor must pursue more charges
against Lubanga and target more perpetrators responsible for
atrocities."

The UPC under Lubanga committed numerous other serious crimes in
Ituri, including murder, torture, rape and mutilation. More than
60,000
civilians have been slaughtered by armed groups in Ituri since the
beginning of the conflict, according to the UN.

Other armed groups, including the Lendu militia Nationalist and
Integrationist Front (FNI) led by Floribert Njabu, also committed
serious
human rights abuses. Human Rights Watch believes that the ICC
prosecutor should investigate Congolese, Ugandan and Rwandan
officials
who may be implicated in some of the international crimes committed
in
Ituri.

The hearing is not a trial to determine whether Thomas Lubanga is
guilty
or not, but a pre-trial hearing in which the prosecution will have
to
satisfy
the court that there is enough evidence to move ahead with a trial.
During
the hearing, Lubanga, through his lawyer, can object to the charges
and
challenge the prosecution's evidence.

Four victims, through their legal representatives, will present
their
views
and concerns about the current charges to the court as independent
parties.
However, they cannot participate in a manner that is prejudicial to
or
inconsistent with Lubanga's fair trial rights.

"This is the first time victims will be heard in an international
criminal
proceeding presenting their own concerns and not just as witnesses,"
said
Mattioli. "It is crucial that the ICC keeps people in the DRC
informed
about these and other important developments in The Hague."

Human Rights Watch urged the ICC to disseminate information about
the
hearing by holding a news conference in The Hague and transmitting
it via
video link for live broadcast in the DRC. The court should also make
available audio, video and written summaries in an easily accessible
and
understandable format after the hearing.

Background

Ituri is one of the areas worst affected by Congo's devastating
wars. A
local armed conflict between Hema and Lendu ethnic groups that began
in
1999 was exacerbated by Ugandan military forces and aggravated by
the
broader international armed conflict in the DRC.

Over the past five years, Human Rights Watch has gathered hundreds
of
testimonies documenting widespread human rights abuses committed by
the UPC in Ituri. Survivors told Human Rights Watch how the UPC, a
predominately Hema militia group, carried out ethnic massacres,
murder,
torture, rape and mutilation, as well as the recruitment of child
soldiers.
For example, UPC combatants under the leadership of Lubanga
slaughtered at least 800 civilians on the basis of their ethnicity
in the
gold
mining region of Mongbwalu between November 2002 and June 2003.

Serious human rights abuses were also committed by other groups,
including the FNI, a Lendu militia opposed to the UPC led by
Floribert
Njabu. For example, in March 2003, the FNI attacked the town of Kilo
in
Ituri and killed at least 100 civilians, mostly women and children,
whom
they accused of helping the Hema.

The Ituri conflict, as well as others in eastern DRC, highlights the
participation of non-Congolese forces. Ituri in particular became a
battleground between the governments of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC.
These governments have provided political and military support to
Congolese armed groups, despite abundant evidence of their
widespread
violations of international humanitarian law.

In April 2004, the transitional Congolese government referred crimes
committed in the country to the ICC. On June 23, 2004, the
prosecutor
announced the beginning of the court's investigation in the DRC.

The International Criminal Court, based in The Hague, has broad
international support. Currently, 102 countries have ratified the
Rome
Statute establishing the court, and nearly 130 have signed the Rome
treaty.

Why are so many of us on psychiatric medication? Did you know that
the U.S. is one of only two countries in the world where drug companies
advertise directly to consumers? Interested in a critique of mental
health treatment from those inside the profession?

Join us for a provocative talk by two distinguished speakers from England:

Philip Thomas, M.D., a psychiatrist for more than 20 years in Britain’s
National Health Service, now Professor of Philosophy, Diversity and
Mental Health at the University of Central Lancashire. He has published
more than 100 articles and three books on psychiatry and mental health.

Rufus May, D. Clin., a clinical psychologist in Bradford, England and
co-chair of Evolving Minds, a public forum on mental health issues. His
interest in humane approaches to distressing experiences began when he
himself was labeled with schizophrenia as an 18 year old. Dr. May has
published a dozen articles in scientific and popular journals, and has
been widely interviewed in the UK media.

PRESS RELEASE:

Experts to Discuss Medication and Mental Illness

Two leading British mental heath experts will give a provocative talk
titled "Drugging Our Distress: A Broader Look at Medication and Mental
Illness" Monday, November 13, at 7:30 pm. The talk will be held in
Hooker Auditorium in the Clapp Laboratory and is free, open to the
public, and accessible to all.

The event will explore why so many people use psychiatric medication and
why the United States is one of only two countries where drug companies
advertise directly to consumers. Addressing the issue will be two
experts on the industry. Philip Thomas, M.D., professor of philosophy,
diversity, and mental health at the University of Central Lancashire,
was a psychiatrist for more than 20 years in the British National Health
Service and has published more than 100 articles and three books on
psychiatry and mental health. Rufus May, a clinical psychologist from
Bradford, England, and cochair of Evolving Minds, a public forum on
mental health issues, became interested in humane approaches to
distressing experiences when he himself was labeled with schizophrenia
as an 18-year-old. He has published a dozen articles in scientific and
popular journals and has been widely interviewed in the British media.

"Most of what Americans know about psychiatric medication comes from the
drug companies, either directly in the form of advertisements or,
indirectly, in the form of research funded by the pharmaceutical
industry," said Gail A. Hornstein, professor of psychology and
coordinator of the November 13 event. "Twenty years from now, we will
likely regard this information the way we now regard claims about
smoking that come from the tobacco industry. Speakers like Philip Thomas
and Rufus May offer an independent perspective that is crucial to our
understanding of medication and mental illness."

The event is sponsored by the Purington Fund, the Dean of the College,
and the Department of Psychology and Education at Mount Holyoke College,
as well as the Freedom Center in Northampton and the Five College
Program in Culture, Health, and Science.

Outstanding success of Alan Woods meeting in Mérida, Venezuela - 800 people attend meeting on the Bolivarian Revolution and Socialism

Print E-mail
By Eduardo Molina and Yonie Moreno
Friday, 10 November 2006

800 people attend meeting on the Bolivarian Revolution and Socialism On Wednesday, November 8, Alan Woods addressed a packed meeting on the Bolivarian Revolution and Socialism in Mérida, Venezuela, at the invitation of the Front of Socialist Forces (Frente de Fuerzas Socialistas), the Ince, the Mérida Printing House and the Centro de Estudios Marx y Engels.

On his arrival in Mérida the organizers of the event had the opportunity to discuss with Alan over a pre-meeting lunch. Around the table, among other prominent leaders of the revolutionary and left forces were Umberto Martinez, President of the "IMECA" Printshop (which has recently printed extracts from Alan's book on the Venezuelan revolution), a member of the leadership of the Bolivarian Movement (MVR), Pedro Alvarez , director of the INCE, José Sanroque, a well-known political writer, as well as councillors belonging to 800 people attend meeting on the Bolivarian Revolution and Socialismthe left wing of the MVR, and other comrades who are historical leaders of the revolutionary movement in Mérida.

Also present was the well-known left-wing intellectual, prolific writer and veteran of the Marxist movement Frantz Lee. Of South African origin, Frantz is now professor at the University of Mérida, where, together with his comrade and partner Jutta, he has organized a Marxist circle. Frantz offered his condolences for the death of Ted Grant and expressed regret that they had never met.

He invited Alan to speak to interested students the next day. One of Frantz's postgraduate students, and organizers of the public meeting, the Spanish Marxist and member of the CMR, Eduardo Molinas, has just produced a book on the Bolivarian Revolution and socialism (due out this month) with an introduction by Alan Woods.

Alan’s book on the Venezuelan revolutionAt half past six, around 800 revolutionaries packed the Centro Cultural Tulio Febres Cordero, the biggest hall in Mérida, an attractive town in the picturesque setting of the Andes, under the shadow of the Pico Bolivar, the highest mountain in Venezuela. A few weeks ago the Frente de Fuerzas Socialistas called a demonstration of 12,000 people under the slogan: "With Chávez to socialism!" and "With Chávez, against the bureaucracy!"

This indicates a profound ferment in this city and a rapid growth of the revolutionary trend. A growing number of activists are dissatisfied with the slow pace of change and the paralysing influence of the bureaucracy and the reformists.

The event was also attended by older comrades, workers, trade unionists and peasants. Here, gathered under one roof, were all the most advanced elements of the Bolivarian movement in Mérida, such as the activists of the misión Vuelvan Caras, comrades from the Frente Francisco Miranda and representatives from different groups that make up the Frente de Fuerzas Socialistas.

A group of peasant activists, members of the Frente Nacional Campesino Ezequiel Zamora travelled for more than three hours in order to attend the meeting.

800 people attend meeting on the Bolivarian Revolution and Socialism The big majority of the meeting were youths, many of them wearing the red shirt of the Movimiento Bolivariano.

They listened to the speech with great attention and evident enthusiasm. When Alan Woods made a devastating criticism of bureaucracy, this was greeted with wild applause and shouts of approval. They were completely in agreement with the analysis and perspectives for the Bolivarian Revolution put forward by the speaker.

Alan began his speech with a masterly explanation of the world context in which the revolution was unfolding. Unlike so many other speakers he explained the ideas of Marxism in a clear and simple manner, using concrete examples to illustrate his central thesis: the organic crisis of the capitalist system on a world scale and the beginnings of a reawakening of the workers' movement internationally, and the need to fight for a fundamental transformation of society.

Having explained and exposed the reactionary lies of the bourgeois alleging the death of socialism after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the leader of the International Marxist Tendency proceeded to analyse the Bolivarian Revolution, pointing out the gains but also emphasising the weaknesses and deficiencies.

Alan Woods in Venezuela The speaker stressed that the fundamental motor-force of the revolution was the working class and the masses, who have saved the revolution at every decisive stage and pushed it forward. Comrade Alan urged the necessity of creating a Marxist current within the Bolivarian movement as the necessary vehicle to concentrate the colossal power of the masses and direct it to conquer the strategic objective: the expropriation of the oligarchy.

This can only be achieved by the working class placing itself at the head of the nation and taking power into its own hands, he said.

The central problem, Alan said, was the absence of a revolutionary party. This is the reason why the workers and peasants failed to take power in countries like Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia and Mexico, where the masses had power in their hands and let it slip through their fingers. In Venezuela, he continued, it was necessary to organize the vanguard in a revolutionary Marxist tendency as an indispensable prerequisite to advance towards the socialist revolution.

While urging maximum support for Chavez in the December elections, Alan warned that unless the revolution expropriates the capitalists, nationalizing the banks, the land and the key points of the economy in private hands, the counterrevolution at a certain point will go over to the offensive, posing a grave threat to the revolution.

Turning his fire against the reformists and revisionists like Heinz Dieterich, who he publicly challenged to a debate after December 3, he explained that there is no bigger danger to the revolution than the pernicious influence of these ex-Marxists, ex-Communists and ex-Maoists and ex-Trotskyists, who spread the poison of scepticism, pessimism and cynicism in the vanguard and the youth and strive to keep the movement within the confines of capitalism. He quoted the French proverb: "until the age of thirty, revolutionary. After that, a swine."

Alan Woods in Venezuela Alan sharply criticised the reformist intellectuals who maintain that the masses do not have the necessary political consciousness to achieve socialism as an argument against taking power.

He pointed out that in every decisive moment of the revolution - the coup of April 11, the bosses' lockout, the recall referendum - it was the movement of the masses that defeated the reaction, demonstrating a very high level of revolutionary consciousness. "What more do you want from the working class?" Alan demanded. The workers have done everything possible to change society. If they have not yet succeeded, it is not their fault but that of the reformists and bureaucrats who refuse to give a lead and constantly hold the movement back.

The speaker then went on to explain that the only way to deal with bureaucracy was from below. He advocated the adoption of anti-bureaucratic measures on the lines of the programme advocated by Lenin in 1917: Election and recall of all officials in the soviet state, the establishment of a popular militia, no official to receive a higher wage than a skilled worker (this point was met with wild applause), and finally, gradually, as the productive forces increase, and the living standards and cultural level of the population raised, all the tasks of administration of the state should be performed by everybody in turn. This part of Alan's speech really connected with the audience who expressed their most emphatic agreement.

800 people attend meeting on the Bolivarian
Revolution and Socialism In conclusion, the author of Reason in Revolt made an appeal to the activists present to get organized, to participate in the construction of a genuine Marxist current within the mass movement with the aim of transforming it into a fighting revolutionary organisation able and willing to lead the masses to the only possible road to victory: the revolutionary conquest of power and the expropriation of the capitalists and the commencement of a genuine socialist revolution.

The meeting ended with the audience on its feet, with raised clenched fists, singing the Internationale - something practically unheard-of these days in Venezuela. This small detail shows with striking clarity the growing impact of the ideas of Marxism in the Bolivarian Movement and the rapid rise of the authority of the CMR among the vanguard of the Revolution.

An even more palpable demonstration of this was the excellent sale of Marxist literature at the end: more than 800,000 bolivars worth of papers, books and pamphlets were sold. This shows the thirst for Marxist ideas that exists among the advanced guard of the Revolution. It gives us every reason for optimism in the final victory.

Richmond, California--population about 100,000--is now the largest
city in the US with a mayor who is a card carrying Green. This is
also significant because Richmond is only about 1/4 white, showing
that the party can appeal to urban voters of color. Gayle McLaughlin
won a 3-way mayoral contest on Tuesday, and hopes to put Green values
in place in this setting.

Rumsfield replacement (Robert Gates) was director of voting company
by Bev Harris

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfield will resign, reportedly to be replaced by former CIA director Robert Gates.

Gates was on the board of directors of VoteHere, a strange little company that was the biggest elections industry lobbyist for the Help America Vote Act (HAVA). VoteHere spent more money than ES&S, Diebold, and Sequoia combined to help ram HAVA through. And HAVA, of course, was a bill sponsored by by convicted Abramoff pal Bob Ney and K-street lobbyist buddy Steny Hoyer. HAVA put electronic voting on steroids.

You can find copies of the VoteHere lobbying forms here: http://sopr.senate.gov/cgi-win/m_opr_viewer.exe?DoFn=0

I can't get them to save to pdf, perhaps you can. Enter search terms in both "registrant" and "client" fields and put in terms "Rhoads" "Livingston" and "Votehere" (one at a time.). Then look at the gravy train while it was in the process of derailing American democracy.

I first became acquainted with VoteHere when I met a source, Dan Spillane, who is the wonderful guy that identified the Diebold source code modules for me after I found the Diebold files. He is the person who introduced me, and subsequently everyone else, to the odd role of The Election Center and R. Doug Lewis in the elections industry.

Spillane also filled me in on The Livingston Group, VoteHere lobbyists, run by Bob Livingston -- the fellow that Hustler publisher Larry Flynt outed during the Bill Clinton blow job days. Larry Flynt offered a million dollars to anyone who could locate a Republican congressman committing adultery, and out popped peccadilloes by Livingston.

Livingston couldn't live that one down, so he resigned his post as House Speaker-Elect and became a lobbyist -- but that's not all! He also launched a group called "Center for Democracy" which was going to "monitor elections." This group also featured several good old boys from the tobacco industry and some mining companies.

Former VoteHere test engineer Dan Spillane was looking into all this because he had been fired after he questioned the certification process on a touch-screen system in which he had identified 250 flaws. It was way back in November 2002 that Spillane told me, "The voting machine industry is a house of cards. And the certification and testing process is the bottom card in the house of cards."

BUT DON'T RUN OUT OF THE ROOM TO TAKE A SHOWER YET. There's more.

VoteHere was a company shilling cryptographic solutions and filled with NSA types (another director was Admiral Bill Owens, another crony of Rummy, Perle and Wolfowitz). For some reason this company claims it was unable to prevent itself from being hacked. In this alleged hack, VoteHere claims that someone stole their source code. Said source code was offered to me in October 2003, an obvious attempt at entrapment which I refused.

Nevertheless, VoteHere claimed to the media that its master security experts had supposedly "tracked" the hacker and had identified the hacker as an activist in the election reform community.

For some reason, it was decided that I should be investigated in connection with this "hack" of VoteHere -- nevermind that I can't remember how to change the password on my own laptop. Therefore I was interviewed by the Secret Service several times about this. Curiously, they never seemed to ask any questions about VoteHere, only my role in finding the Diebold files and publishing the Diebold memos.

This nonsense eventually culminated in a gag order and a letter from the U.S. Attorney to appear in front of a federal grand jury with information on all the visitors to the Black Box Voting Web site. (As if they couldn't get that in less dramatic ways in post-Patriot Act America). Attorney Lowell Finley (now with http://www.VoterAction.org ) went to bat for me on this. A reporter named George Howland from the Seattle Weekly also got wind of it. When it hit the press, and with Lowell Finley's help, their harassment of me stopped.

VoteHere never sold any voting machines that I can find, but apparently did set up some deals to embed its cryptography into some voting systems. We found memos in the Diebold trash about VoteHere's crypto-crap, and Maryland Director of Elections Linda Lamone shows up in VoteHere-related letters. Sequoia Voting Systems signed an agreement with VoteHere, but its not clear to me whether they ever did anything about it.

Robert Gates stepped away from VoteHere shortly before he showed up in Chapter 8 of my book, Black Box Voting, in a short bit about the VoteHere company history. You can read that here: http://www.blackboxvoting.org/bbv_chapter-8.pdf

I don't know about you, but I'd rather use a paper, pencil, and count by hand at the polling place than have former CIA director Robert Gates fooling around with my vote.

But that's just me.

-- Bev Harris
Founder, Black Box Voting

P.S. Since the HBO special, I have plenty of moral support, but even after the Secret Service interviews and all the rest of the nonsense my husband and I have had to put up with, there are others who have had it rougher.

I'd like you to take a moment to visit this Web site -- not affiliated with Black Box Voting -- to meet one of the heroic citizens in this movement who has faced the most brutal retaliation of all:
Stephen Heller. If you saw the HBO film "Hacking Democracy" you may remember a scene where I am chastising Diebold for lying about correcting problems with its product. I refer to "Release Notes." Those notes came from a source. Stephen Heller is being threatened with up to five years in prison for allegedly leaking me those documents. Kevin Shelley then decertified Diebold, and recommended criminal prosecution of Diebold. Diebold was never prosecuted, but Stephen Heller is being prosecuted RIGHT NOW. I hope you will donate to his defense. If not for citizens like him, where would your vote be now?

From today's Gazette:

City's reckoning left out valid petition signers
NORTHAMPTON - At least two properties that should have been included in the city's calculation of property owners who petitioned against a special zoning district for Smith College were missing from the review, the Gazette has found.
--See the updated map of the overlay district.

Please note:

One major clarification to this article: We don't feel the mayor or any of her staff should have been involved in the petition certification process of a petition brought forth in opposition to mayoral action as the mayor is a signer in the agreement with Smith College.  All of the city staff involved that are employed in the Planning Dept., Assessors Office, Registrar of Voters Office, and City Solicitor work for and at the discretion of the mayor. Most people are aware of what a superior/subordinate relationship entails. We feel the City Clerk, a fine woman elected independently, erred in her decision to utilize city staff and should have hired an independent entity to help her with the process.  Further, the city has yet to provide us documentation as to why each property that was rejected was rejected.  Some were submitted prior to the arbitrary deadlines established.  Though Frances Crowe was one of our first signatures submitted, she was not mailed a letter by the city requesting an affidavit until a week before the final deadline allowing her only 2.5 business days to respond.  This is not reasonable.

Further, the Solicitor invoked the Attorney General during the Council meeting of September 7, 2006. Tom Reilly and his office did not provide an opinion on this process as asserted by the Solicitor to the City Council.

that was the point.
This is a racist, homophobic website. If you read it, you'd see

I was impressed that Walmart was taking its stand and contributing

Nothing!! I imagine that's why Emily shared it. AFA is an extremist, fundamentalist organization that is boycotting various companies because they don't adhere to their values. They are also boycotting Ford for its open policies concerning sexual orientation.

Wal-Mart Contributes 5% Of Online Sales To Homosexual Group

<christmasmag.jpg>
Sign the pledge not to shop at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club on the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving. Time is short. Act today!

Dear Emily,

Help recruit 1,000,000 families who will agree not to shop at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club (owned by Wal-Mart) on the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving. Here's why:

In a show of support to help homosexuals legalize same-sex marriage, Wal-Mart has agreed to automatically donate 5% of online sales directly to the Washington DC Community Center for Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender People. The cash donation will come from online purchases made at Wal-Mart through the homosexual group's Web site. This move follows Wal-Mart's joining the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and agreeing to give generous financial help to that organization also.

Every purchase made online for books, music, videos, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, and electronics at the site will automatically send 5% of the sales to the CCBLBT People. The agreement is an indication that Wal-Mart is totally committed to supporting the homosexual movement.

Wal-Mart also gave a generous cash donation to the Northwest Arkansas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Community Center, helping to provide a place where homosexuals can come together to "socialize."

Many observers feel it would have been a wise business decision for Wal-Mart to remain neutral in the cultural battle over homosexual marriage. But this was an ideological decision by Wal-Mart - not a business decision.

Take Action

1. Sign the petition to Wal-Mart letting them know you will be one of the 1,000,000 families who will not shop at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club on the Friday or Saturday following Thanksgiving.

“[A]fter all, and this is a very important thing to understand, the
power of governments and the power of all large entities like

government and the military, as powerful as they are, cannot carry
out a war.” - Howard Zinn, speaking on the necessity of activism with

2006).

This fascinating 22 minute conversation by one of the great thinkers
and activists of our time

Dr. Zinn encouraged activism in peace and justice movements, both for
the sake of society and for the sake of ourselves.

“Historically we can point to the successes of these movements [such
as civil rights and against the Vietnam War]….I think the other thing
that is important to tell people who perhaps are on the verge of
becoming active but are not sure what it will mean to their lives,
and what sacrifices they will have to make. I think what is important
for them to know is that there is nothing more satisfying than to
participate with other people in a struggle or a good cause. That
whatever sacrifices may be required of you, whatever troubles you may
go through, whatever threats may be made to you, once you have been
part of such a movement, you will never forget it. It will be a high
point of your life. There is nothing so satisfying as getting
together with other people who believe in peace and justice."

Traprock has started a new video blog for the 50 plus videos in our catalog.

It will be a gargantuan task compiling and posting the existing videos to the blog,
while adding new ones, but it will put them all in an easy to find place. The blog enables
us to use streaming technology, so you may watch the video while it downloads.

We started with something fun - see and hear Holly Near singing "I am Willing"

She sang on May 18, 2006 at a rally outside the White House. Cindy Sheehan and others
from groups including Gold Star Families for Peace, AfterDowingStreet, Democracy Rising,
Code Pink, and Traprock Peace Center, among many others, brought a petition to the gates
of the White House. The petition called on the Bush administration to not attack Iran;
it was signed by over 40,000 people.

Hear audio of the rally with Fr. John Dear, Rev. Lennox Yearwood,
Cindy Sheehan, Medea Benjamin and David Swanson, among others at

(These videos do not not "stream" yet - they will be transfered to the blog soon.)

Pat Humphries and Sandy Opatow sang backup.

The Don’t Attack Iran on-line petition now has over 78,000 signatures, and
was presented to the White House, again, on November 8, 2006. Cindy Sheehan
was arrested outside the White House.

You may sign the petition at http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/iran

Wal-Mart Contributes 5% Of Online Sales To Homosexual Group

<christmasmag.jpg>

 2. VERY IMPORTANT! Millions of Americans are not aware of Wal-Mart's support for homosexual marriage. PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

As you know the constitutional convention held today, November 9, took up two items concerning gay marriage.  #19 was an amendment that would ban gay marriage and civil unions and nullify existing gay marriages.  #20 is a citizen initiative petition that would amend the Massachusetts constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman except for those marriages between two gay persons that took place between the legalization of those marriages and passage of the constitutional amendment.
#19, the legislative amendment, was defeated by a vote of 196-0.  A motion was then made to recess the convention until January 2, 2007, the last day of the current session.  The motion passed by a vote of 109 - 87.  I voted with the majority.

Comments on Nancy Pelosi:

.

For those of us who might be inclined to cheer the fact that SF's own Nancy Pelosi is the first woman speaker of the house, a look at her actual record might sober us a bit.  It’s true, the right wing hates her (well, she IS a woman) and she hasn’t gone along with a lot of the anti-immigrant stuff, and she’s generally good on abortion and environmental issues (I haven't looked into this very deeply) so that's all good.  But she recently publicly promised Bush that she would never vote for impeachment and she's been terrible on Iraq and Palestine.

Those old identity politics just don’t do it anymore.  '2 x chromosomes' is no guarantee of anything.

See http://www.tomjoad.org/Pelosi.htm for summary and commentary, http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=H0222103 for actual voting record-in fact, this site is an absolute wealth of information.

Wal-Mart Contributes 5% Of Online Sales To Homosexual Group

<christmasmag.jpg>

 2. VERY IMPORTANT! Millions of Americans are not aware of Wal-Mart's support for homosexual marriage. PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

 3. Print out and distribute the Wal-Mart Pass Along Sheet by clicking here.

PALESTINE: International aid agencies condemn Gaza carnage [news]
[9 November 2006] - International aid agencies have reacted with dismay to the violence in Gaza in which at least 18 Palestinian civilians are known to have died. The
Red Cross and Unicef said they were appalled by the deaths of women and children from Israeli tank fire in the town of Beit Hanoun.
Israeli PM Ehud Olmert has expressed regret over the attack and offered help for the many wounded. Israel has ordered a halt to all artillery attacks in Gaza.
The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, said a massacre had been committed, and demanded intervention by the United Nations. A senior figure in the Islamic militant group Hamas, Khalid Meshaal, called for retaliation.
The shelling has been condemned across Europe and the Middle East. And a White House statement said US President George W Bush was "deeply saddened" by the injuries and loss of life. It called for "appropriate steps" to be taken to avoid a repetition of the incident.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) urged Israel to respect its obligations under international humanitarian law which prohibits attacks on civilians. "Civilians must not pay the price of conflict," said Dominik Stillhart, the agency's head of delegation in Israel and the Palestinian territories. "Any civilian loss of life further fuels the conflict and generates more loss, suffering and grief."
The UN children's agency Unicef said it was distressed by what it called the extraordinary violence in Gaza. It said children there were living through a terrifying siege that would have an enduring impact.
John Dugard, the UN special investigator on human rights in the Palestinian territories,
called on the Security Council to take action. Mr Dugard, who is well known for his outspoken position on Gaza, said the quartet of the US, Russia, the EU and the UN, who are in charge of the roadmap peace plan in the Middle East, had done little to stop Israel's attacks, which he described as a brutal collective punishment of a people.
Palestinian officials said the incident was caused by a barrage of tank shells which hit civilian homes. Thirteen of the dead were said to belong to the same family, and two of them were women and six were children.
Later on Wednesday, at least one Palestinian was killed in an Israeli air strike on Gaza City, Palestinian security and medical sources said. Several others were reported to have been wounded in the missile strike. The Israelis withdrew from the town on Tuesday following a major offensive centred in Beit Hanoun.
More than 60 Palestinians and an Israeli soldier were killed in a week-long operation that Israel says was aimed at stopping militant rocket fire into Israel from Gaza.
Three days of national mourning have been announced throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Subject: Ask Hershey's to help Blue Diamond workers

Dear Friend,

Blue Diamond runs the world's largest almond processing plant
and produces almonds for our snacks, cereal, and candy. They're
also running a self described "aggressive union-avoidance
campaign" against their workers who are simply trying to form a
union to improve their wages and working conditions!

It's time to ask one of Blue Diamond's biggest customers to
demand the company play sweet. Ask Hershey's to demand its
supplier, Blue Diamond, quit its tricks and pledge to not
interfere with its employees union organizing efforts! I just
wrote a letter to Hershey's - will you join me? Just click here
to write your note:

http://action.americanrightsatwork.org/campaign/hersheys_bd

More information is included below!

----- Message from Liz Cattaneo, American Rights at Work ----

We're asking one of Blue Diamond's biggest customers to play
sweet. Hershey's, the world's leading chocolate manufacturer,
uses
almonds processed by Blue Diamond workers for some of its
top-selling candy bars. Unlike Blue Diamond, thousands of
Hershey's employees have the benefit of union representation.

Tell Hershey's to hold its suppliers to the same standards it
has for its U.S. workers: allow employees to freely and fairly
form a union.

Write to Hershey's now!

http://action.americanrightsatwork.org/campaign/hersheys_bd

For years, production and maintenance workers at the Blue
Diamond plant in Sacramento say their employer has denied them
respect, raises, and benefits. When workers first tried to join
the International Longshore and Warehouse Union two years ago,
Blue Diamond came down hard on them. A National Labor Relations
Board judge eventually found Blue Diamond guilty of numerous
labor law violations to discourage workers from forming a union,
including:

- Firing pro-union workers
- Threatening workers would lose their pensions
- Coercively interrogating workers
- Threatening the plant would close down or move

The company did bring back two of the fired workers, but workers
say the company is back to its old tricks. Blue Diamond is under
investigation for breaking labor law again. What will make the
difference? Blue Diamond should pledge to remain neutral and to
not interfere with its workers' rights to make a free and fair
choice about union representation.

Ask Hershey's to help Blue Diamond workers!

http://action.americanrightsatwork.org/campaign/hersheys_bd

Thanks for all you do!

Sincerely,

Liz Cattaneo

OF U.S. JOURNALIST BRAD WILL*******

Since the Zapatista uprising began on January 1, 1994, (the first day that
NAFTA went into effect) the Mexican military and paramilitaries have waged
a counter insurgency war against Zapatista and sympathizer communities.
Eleven years after the uprising, human rights abuses are rampant.
But Mexico’s indigenous communities are developing new forms of
resistance. Women are playing leading roles on all fronts in the struggle
to build alternatives. Fair Trade Cooperatives allow women to play a
central role in the control and development of local economies.

Gabriela Martínez López is a sociologist and researcher who worked with
the Center of Political Analysis and Social and Economic Research (CAPISE)
in Chiapas, Mexico. Gabriela’s studies have focused on collective rights
of indigenous communities, liberation theology, and fair trade and women’=

Alan,

Thanks for adding PDA to the mix of options that people have for working for change. I consider Tim Carpenter to be a friend, and I admire what he and others have done to make PDA a force to be reckoned with nationally.

PDA and PDM indeed have complimentary, yet in some ways very different, agendas. The biggest difference can be seen between the "A" and the "M" -- not to be too cute, but PDM is, by design, an organization that works "with and within" the Massachusetts Democratic Party, whereas PDA's scope is nationwide. Obviously, there is a need for work at both levels, and people can choose to do both, or focus on the one where they have more enthusiasm. Or neither -- some are content to work solely within the MassDems structure. And that's fine.

PDM's mission, going forward, will be to continue to work for progressive candidates and to advocate for progressive ideas within Massachusetts. Individual chapters (Northampton comes to mind) have held joint meetings in the past with local PDA chapters, and I'm sure that will occur again in the future when we share joint interests.

I think one lesson from the campaign just ended is that there is strength in diversity, and huge value in collaboration and networking. Many of us in PDM, for example, worked closely with Neighbor to Neighbor, a wonderful organization that has a different, but, again, complimentary organizing model. We're hoping to strengthen ties with them as well as other like-minded organizations throughout the Commonwealth.

I don't see multiple organizations as dispersing energy, but rather as serving to reinforce and support each other's passions. It's not like we have some finite list of problems that need to be solved.

I'm sure others will want to advocate for their own organizations, and I welcome that and think we'll all benefit from a fuller understanding of opportunities to serve.

Michael

PDM & Progressive Democrats of America

After reading Judith's and Michael's e-mails about PDM, I just have to offer some words about Progressive Democrats of America (PDA).

www.pdamerica.org

PDA is another organization dedicated nationally and in MA to cultivate and build new progressive political leadership and electoral strength across election cycles. It was founded in Boston coming out of the 2004 Democratic National Convention. PDA members worked in various Congressional Districts across the country to impact the Democratic victories this week. National PDA Board members include Members of the US Congress (incoming House Judiciary Chair Rep. John Conyers, Rep. Barbara Lee), Cindy Sheehan, Tom Hayden and others.

In MA, all 5 PDA members listed (and others) worked on electing Deval beginning early in his candidacy. My idealistic side truly wonders why PDA and PDM aren't already working together and sharing resources to impact MA electoral politics and the MA Democratic Party. If PDM is planning meetings in Pittsfield, Springfield and Lowell, why not make them joint PDA/PDM meetings?

For those in this grassroots yahoo group who haven't heard of PDA, I urge you to check out the website listed above or e-mail any of the 5 people receiving copies of this. Thanks for your consideration.

Recently a Letter to the Editor from a Smith College spokesperson was published by the Gazette stating that Smith College has no plans to remove the Green Street Cafe from it's location.  Interestingly, since posting my objection October 30 on the PCF, Masslive Your Stories, and the Gazette online Talkback feature et al, and running through November 8, there were eight newspaper days for the Gazette.  In the course of those eight days the Gazette mentioned Smith College 20 times or 2.5 times an issue.  Of course, the Letter to the Editor was the only correspondence included by Smith in their alumna mailing, as they declined to forward my correspondence of rebuttal to their former students, faculty, and staff.  So 45,000 Smith College graduates around the globe were mislead along with the locals.

Click http://dlafleur.squarespace.com/storage/Smith%20Documents%20008.jpg and download a diagram that illustrates Smith College's plans to eliminate Green Street and Arnold Avenue from existence. The owners of the Green Street Cafe commissioned the painting of the mural, "Last Staff Supper" by Jeff Mack to commemorate this probability. Though Buildings B & C are listed as potential sites on the diagram, this represents the most likely future of this neighborhood after Building A is completed.

Meanwhile, there are numerous Northampton city committee and board meetings held daily, that evidently don't create much news that's fit to print.  When was the last time you read about the Sustainability Steering Committee for instance, or the Citizens Advisory Committee of the Northampton State Hospital?  A woman made an impassioned plea to the mayor and city council during the public comment period at the last city council meeting, and the Gazette ignored the story of alleged rampant drug use at city schools, presuming I suppose, that a high school with over 1,000 students has no drug activity, or at the very least, that the public doesn't deserve to be informed of these allegations.

Newspaper readership is declining across America thanks largely to the internet.  Though newspaper corporations are running successful websites now to deliver their news, we are fortunate to live during a time of affordable and effective information sharing.

Please forward to interested parties.

“MYSTERIOUS” DISAPPEARANCE AND RE-APPEARANCE OF THE
ST. LAWRENCE IROQUOIS – COLONIAL REPORTS ABOUT OUR
DEATH AND DISAPPEARANCE ARE PREMATURE AND SHOULD NOT
BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. ( MNN Museum Report)

MNN. Nov. 9, 2006.

At the last minute on Tuesday, November 7, we Iroquois
found out there was an exhibit opening at the Calliere
Museum in Old Montreal . It was on the “Mysterious
Disappearance of the St. Lawrence Valley Iroquois”.
They wish! Four of us from Kahnawake, Kanehsatake and
Tyendinaga decided to go and look it over.

We were curious as to how they got the idea that we
had “disappeared” or that there was any mystery to be
solved. How would anyone feel if their so-called
demise was advertised and put on exhibit? It’s like
finding yourself invited to your own wake when you’re
not dead. It really bugged us. Can you understand?
It felt like a death threat. It reminded us of the
way we were all told at school that our moms, dad,
brothers, sisters, grandparents, everyone were all
going to die out. We cried. By now we know a
terrorist threat when we see one.

We arrived around noon. The banner outside indicated
that this was sponsored by a whole bunch of Quebec ,
Canadian and international corporations. We were
almost the first visitors there. Instead of welcoming
us as the long lost Iroquois, they treated as though
we were spoiling their party. The man at the front
desk told us we had to pay $12 to go into the wake.
We suggested that since we had disappeared and were
ghosts in their eyes, we should be allowed in for
free. Suddenly he started to speak only French to us.
This is when we started to talk only in Mohawk to
him. He got mad and started punching the cash
register. Eventually, after arguing about the taxes
on the ticket, we could see the only way to get around
this extortionist was to pay him off. Then we went up
to the second floor.

What we saw was a gross rip off not just for us but
for the ignorant public that they hoped to ensnare
with their fake account of history.

Some of the corporate perpetrators of these deceptions
were the National Archives of Canada, the Birmingham
Public Library, the Canadian Museum of Civilization,
some patrimonie organization from Sorel Quebec, the
Quebec Conservation Department, the National Archives
of France, the National Capital Commission of Quebec,
the ghost longhouse at St. Anicet, the Gilcrease
Museum of Tulsa Oklahoma, the Huntington Library of
San Marino California, Jefferson County Historical
Society of Watertown NY, McCord Museum of Montreal,
McGill University Osler Library, Michel Crepeau of
France, Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications,
MODIS Rapid Response Project of NASA, Montreal
Botanical Gardens, Quebec Museum of Civilization,
National Science Foundation of North Arlington
Virginia, New York State Museum of Albany,
Point-de-Buisson Archaeological Park, State Hermitage
Museum of St. Petersburg Russia, Trustees of the
British Museum, Department of Agriculture in
Washington and the University of Montreal. Yep, there
you go! A whole bunch of people want us dead. Here
we are, raining on their parade.

Why was NASA involved? Maybe they think we came from
outer space. Or maybe that’s where they want to send
us. Each of these entities must have had one little
item to show that we had disappeared. Somebody had a
big travel budget to visit all these bastions of
colonial tradition.

The museum had the cash to rack up record numbers of
air miles. Somehow they just couldn’t find the time
to stop in Kahnawake or Kanehesatake on their way to
the airport. Of course, the hour’s drive to Akwesasne
would have been out of their way. When we asked why,
they said they did speak to one young fella in
Kahnawake about this, by phone! It wasn’t long
distance so that was in their budget. They couldn’t
ask us because, in their minds, we had mysteriously
disappeared. Their tour guide told us, “You are
different Iroquois”, and “our scientists have
archaeological evidence that backs up our claims”.

“Yes”, we said, “lots of people used to think the
earth was flat”.

So, there! Apparently, even though we had
disappeared, our horticulture lives on in the
“descendants”! Isn’t this a contradiction?

On Sunday Oct. 3rd 1535 Cartier visited Hochelaga at
the foot of what they call Mount Royal . He drew
longhouses, a central square like in Spain , with
avenues and maybe even street signs. There was a
shaman’s house who lived apart from the “mere
mortals”. Lol!

We apparently left Montreal before Cartier arrived for
his second visit and were gone for good by the time
Champlain came. Don’t they know we have relatives all
over the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Valley, New
York State and every where. We loved to travel too
and go visiting. Myth busted! Another reason we left
temporarily for 75 to 100 years was to leave the
ground to fallow. Our idea was to use the ground and
when it was getting depleted of minerals and
nourishment, we would plant orchards, take down our
villages and then move to our next site for 20 or so
years. We had 4 to 5 regular sites. It would take
from 80 to 100 to complete a rotation. By the time we
returned, the earth would have regained its
nourishment. We don’t put down hundreds of thousands
of pounds of potassium nitrate to mock what the earth
does naturally. This modern practice is destroying
the earth. We certainly didn’t expect a bunch of
foreigner to move in and defile it with asphalt and
all the other pollution that has made this once
beautiful place infertile for agriculture or man.

We were here when Champlain came in 1607. “I won’t
look at them so I can say I didn’t see them’, said
Champlain. They suggested we were the victims of
diseases or a “Little Ice Age” that began around 1450?
Then they said, “It was “intertribal warfare”. Their
evidence for this is that we built “defensive
palisades” around our villages. Well, we did grow our
medicines right next to our longhouses and we erected
these fences to keep out the creatures who might want
to come and disturb them. We also had 3000 years of
peace until the colonists brought their incessant
warfare here.

We notice they sprinkled words throughout their texts
like “appeared”, “might have”, “may be”, “probably”
and “it would appear”. Their lawyers advised them so
we can’t sue the pants off them for lying about us.
They don’t want to acknowledge us because they say
that the land was for the taking because nobody was
here. This is coming from a culture that has no
stewardship for the land. So where did we come from,
under some rocks?

One exhibit entitled “To Pop or Not to Pop” is about
pop corn, corn soup and all the cooking skills we had.
They did not mention that corn, beans and squash, the
Three Sisters”, provided all the nutrition one needed
to live a healthy life. We got these at the beginning
according to our creation story. They found we
Iroquois were in the Bay of Gaspe and elsewhere.
Cartier found us with corn like he had seen in Brazil
. He said that this had convinced us to give up our
nomadic ways and tie our fate to the soil.

Most of the articles on display were little pieces
from pipes, pots and who knows what. They were tiny
and under glass with texts on a red or white
background in French first and then English. Nothing
in Mohawk! Maybe they think that our language is not
relevant. After all, its their theory that we have
disappeared.

Really misleading was info that the clan mothers led
the families and selected the chiefs. The people tell
the clan mothers and chiefs what to do and say. The
power is with the people. Their sham democracy
doesn’t want to say that.

They refer to the “Creator”, implying we believed in
their god. Our philosophy is based on our knowledge
of the natural world. Gariwiio is the perfect reality
which is nature. The kasatstenera kowa sa oiera is
the great natural power which we can see and know
exists. We have many symbols for the stories that we
passed down to remind us of our history.

They minimize our world down to making offerings of
tobacco and sacrificing dogs and eating them. In the
glass were the bones of a dog. We did not use shamans
to contact any forces. We made our relationships with
and respect for the natural world and developed our
awareness ourselves.

The shaman did not suck out the evil or sickness from
a person. There was no evil when everything was part
of the natural equilibrium. Holy hell! This is
completely manufactured probably by a bunch of priests
who are trying to hit up people for money. “The
shaman would gaze into the fire and go into a trance
by dancing, chanting, fasting or sitting in a sweat
lodge”. We did not have shamans or sweat lodges.
Where did this come from? It’s one of those phony
Indian Affairs healing programs being used to pacify
us? We were almost tempted to ask where the brown
Baby Jesus in the cradle was.

Cartier said we loved games and gambling. Is that why
they built the Montreal casino nearby? They found a
lot of different colored potsherds in their digs,
which they think might be ripped up off-track betting
slips. We did have the peach pit game in a wooden
bowl played by clans to decide who was going to win
the gifts and do all the work until the next festival.

They definitely found no evidence that we played
lacrosse. They want to steal this as a Canadian
invented game just like hockey. Hockey comes from the
_expression “a-kee”, which means “ouch” when they hit
each other with their sticks. It was played between
villages as it is today.

As for fashion, they said that we ran around naked
except for small skins to cover our privates! In the
cold! Are they kidding? If we went naked, we bared
it all. Afterwards, we did cover ourselves to protect
us from European perverts.

We made necklaces from recycled pipe stems [that we
got from the second hand stores in Old Montreal ?]
They said that wampum beads were the most precious
item we possessed in the whole wide world. All
Iroquois men smoked. Did they examine our lungs? We
did for ceremonial purposes apparently until Cartier
arrived. They say we started to smoke like chimneys
like those French Canadians who drive over to our
communities today. They’re all pale and desperate to
buy cheap native cigarettes. It states that tobacco
appeared in the new world in 800 AD and in Montreal in
1300. They know this because they found a whole lot
of pipes dating from that time. Was this on one of
the pipe stems they found? How do they know it was
tobacco being smoked? Who was Cartier trying to
impress. He just wanted to raise money to make
another trip over here in his search gold, the fool!

This is a pitiful exhibit. Cartier said that Iroquois
women were industrious and the men were lazy. He
called us “nomadic”. How would he know? He hung
around the skirtless women and didn’t go with the men
into the forests or on trading, hunting and diplomatic
expeditions. Who’s the lazy bugger here?

We wondered what all this was leading up to? Yep!
The colonists found a new archaeological site at Cap
Rouge River – “the remains of the very first French
settlement in America ”. Hoo-ray! Lots of money for
diggers! It was apparently the fort built by Cartier
in 1541 where he spent that winter. This is where the
king had ordered a white colony be built. They found
sherds of Italian faience. Wow! The public can see
all this in 2008. This is how long it will take to
manufacture the ancient artifacts they will put on
display and celebrate 400 years of colonization.

We complained to the guide that we had not
disappeared, that he was not staring at ghosts, that
this whole exhibit was misleading and that we are
definitely still here. In other words, we were
unconvinced by the story of our death. Excited and
anxious, security was summoned. We were followed
around for a bit. Then a short little women sergeant
appeared and told us that the museum would refund our
money. We’d prefer they shut down this travesty. Or
if the public sees it, they should be told it’s a
fictional representation meant to mislead the public
and justify colonization. Cartier was just a hack
explorer like the heroes of the Harlequin romances.
There were lots of Euros over here before him. But
they didn’t try to scam the nobility at home into
financing their misadventures.

Could you tell us your name, organization, etc.?

My name is Zaki Baruti, I'm President-General of the Universal African People's Organization, whose base headquarters is St. Louis, Missouri.

Zaki Baruti, UAPO

Zaki Baruti, President-General of the Universal African People's Organization

Why do you think the question of Venezuela is important for working people and African-American workers in particular here in the United States?

Well, the question of Venezuela is very important to working people and people of African descent on several levels. Number one, the workers across the United States and throughout the world are constantly exploited by the owners of various factories and the appendages of capitalism, so what's taking place in Venezuela with the workers being empowered sets an example for the western hemisphere as well as throughout the world.

It's very important that we stand in complete solidarity with the workers of the world. In particular to the African community its very important that in Venezuela itself there is a sizeable population of people of African descent to the degree of 30%. As we know, across the world people of African descent are normally the most oppressed, and with the revolution that's being led by our brother Hugo Chavez, the vestiges of oppression are being broken, so he will serve as a model for our people as far as one who is seeking and actualizing liberation. As well as the kinds of programs that empower people to have free health care is an example that must be played out across the world, especially in this country where we see over 45 million people who do not have access to proper health care.

So, we at the Universal African People's Organization, as I sit with my brothers next to me Sau'deh, Lionel, Hakim and other brothers and sisters we say - Long live the Venezuelan Revolution! Long live Hugo Chavez! Long live the workers in Brazil who have taken over the factories because factories are closed here because of economic policies, that need to be re-opened. We need to begin to emulate the model being set there.

Do you have any specific message then for the workers of Freteco in Venezuela, and to the Pan-American Gathering of Occupied Factories, of the Landless Peasants Movement in Venezuela and Brazil, and workers in sttruggle around the rest of Latin America?

Let me salute the brothers and sisters who are coming from across the world to convene around the question of factory takeovers. Keep up the good work!  Bring it back to organize in the poor areas of the United States and across the world, because we must for the salvation of this generation and future generations have a new world order that is based on peace, justice and equality for everyone, and an equitable distribution of wealth for everybody.

Union Members Make the Difference Nov. 7

by Mike Hall, Nov 8, 2006

Union voters played a big role in yesterday’s historic election that brought at least 28 new Democratic members to the U.S. House of Representatives and four to the U.S. Senate, with two other Senate races still too close to call.

An election-night survey by Peter D. Hart Research Associates finds that in House races, union voters supported Democratic candidates 74 percent to 26 percent for Republican candidates. That’s a big jump from 2004 when the margin was 70 percent to 30 percent and from the 2002 off-year election when union voters favored Democrats 68 percent to 32 percent.

In the battleground states where Senate seats were in play, the union vote went to Democrats 73 percent to 27 percent versus the 55 percent to 45 percent split among all voters.

Says AFSCME President Gerald McEntee:

The union movement provided the largest vote margin of any party, institution or organization in America.

The strong support for change didn’t come from blind party loyalty but, as the Hart survey points out, from a deep desire for change and dissatisfaction with Bush’s and congressional Republicans’ leadership. The survey finds that:

  • 69 percent of union voters disapprove of Bush’s job performance.
  • 64 percent are dissatisfied with the economic situation in the country today.
  • 57 percent believe the decision to go to war in Iraq has made America less safe.

When asked their top issues, union voters cite the war in Iraq (41 percent), economy and jobs (32 percent), health care and prescription drugs (26 percent) and Social Security (26 percent).

They also say their top two concerns about the Republican-controlled Congress are that Republican lawmakers:

  • Cared more about political power than doing right (37 percent).
  • Acted as rubber stamps for George W. Bush (36 percent).
  • Supported politics that hurt working people (32 percent).
  • Tolerated corruption and dishonesty (24 percent).

AFL-CIO President John Sweeney says the challenge the union movement faced and conquered was to transform members’ frustration and anger into political power. The Hart poll finds that Labor 2006’s member mobilization hit the mark with 93 percent of union voters in battleground states saying they had heard from their unions about the issues and candidates, including phone calls, workplace contacts and the Internet and e-mail.

Sweeney says:

We were by far the most powerful turnout engine on the progressive side. We knew the turnout of union household members and our new Working America members could change the power structure in our country, and that’s exactly what happened. We showed once again that strong unions are essential to winning progressive change.

Hart also surveyed Working America members on election night and found the AFL-CIO’s community affiliate brought new voters to the polls compared with 2002, the last off-year election, before Working America was created. In fact, 80 percent of Working America members who did not vote in 2002 went to the polls yesterday and backed Democratic House candidates 77 percent and Senate candidates by 80 percent.

Working America members’ desire for a change in direction was overwhelming, with 65 percent saying it was time to clean up corruption in Washington as the most or a very important factor in their vote. Also 70 percent cited the need to improve health care coverage and access and 65 percent said protecting Social Security.

Union voters say the new Congress needs to set progressive working family priorities including:

  • Protecting workers when companies declare bankruptcy (96 percent);
  • Requiring Medicare to negotiate prescription drug prices with the pharmaceutical industry (94 percent);
  • Reforming trade agreements (94 percent);
  • Reducing health care costs for average families (93 percent);
  • Strengthening protection for workers to join unions (93 percent);
  • Raising the minimum wage (91 percent); and
  • Passing Bush’s plan to privatize Social Security (16 percent).

Working family voters aren’t going to “naively” depend on Democrats to lead the way toward the changes they voted for yesterday, says Sweeney:

…we’re going to keep up our campaign and keep working people working together to demand that Congress take decisive action. We are going to insist that our new congressional leaders begin work immediately…on urgent priorities….Working people elected these men and women and we’re not just going to hold them accountable—we’re going to unite our country behind them to renew economic opportunities for all.

 YOU DID IT: RUMSFELD OUT!
Now seize the mandate for peace in Iraq
Dear Shel,
Seize the moment, and kick off the Mandate for Peace project, to make sure the new Congress remembers why we elected them.

The news just came in that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, one of the key architects of the debacle in Iraq, is finally stepping down. Experts said this would *never* happen, because Rumsfeld was so close to President Bush. Your overwhelming rejection of Rumsfeld-Bush war in Iraq yesterday changed all those rules though.
HERE's WHAT's NEXT:
Even President Bush has realized that things have to change in Iraq. Starting now, we'll push the newly-elected Congress to Bring our Troops Home. Dozens of peace and community groups are launching a new post-election campaign this week called "Mandate for Peace." SIGN ON NOW to get this rejuvenated campaign off to a big start.

TrueMajority members have been calling for this resignation for *years*, and have sent tens of thousands of calls and letters, despite the odds against success. This is an historic moment; let's make the most of it.
We're working on this with Iraq Veterans Against War, Peace Action, Gold Star Families for Peace, Code Pink, Global Exchange and many others. Make this the moment the beginning of the end of the Iraq nightmare.

Thanks for all you do,
Matt Holland
