WELCOME to any and all knitters
and lace addicts who've discovered
Donna Druchunas' Arctic Lace,
Knitting Projects and Stories
Inspired by Alaska's Native Knitters.
I received this book (AND 2 ounces of
qiviut as well!!!, one in a lace weight,
the other as a batt just waiting to be
spun as I've recently been dabbling in
this gentle art also) as a GIFT...
THANKS SO MUCH, BARBARA!!!...
and it's been calling to me to give it
a try. I'd call myself a novice lace
knitter, and though I've knitted dish
cloths in lace patterns using DK and
worsted weight cotton and US 7 needles,
and Xmas balls and bookmarks using Size 10 crochet thread and US 1 needles, this is my first attempt at using what feels like cobwebs to knit lace. I thought I'd try out one of the patterns in a different yarn before diving into the qiviut.
I'm using Kid Merino from Crystal Palace Yarns (28% kid mohair, 28% merino, 44% micro nylon) in the Painted Iris colorway to make the Mobius Scarf on US 5 bamboo needles.
Perhaps this wasn't the best choice for a first "real lace" project, but...I've just made it to the end of the first repeat. I started out with WAY wrong needles (plastic circular with pretty blunt ends...I won't even call 'em points), and after ripping out 5 rows due to the needles jumping out of the stitches...not an easy or recommended task with mohair...I jumped right back on the horse with straight bamboos, and I'm doing a bit better.
Come join in and share your trials, successes, hints, tips and lace chatter with me!
