I’m a librettist and playwright in search of a composer to complete work on a full-length musical entitled “Starfest.” My plays have won awards and been produced throughout the country. A movie, based on one of my plays, is due to be released in the spring. I have written one other musical based on the life Joan of Arc.The musical “Starfest” has been in development for several years, and I’m looking for a composer to finish up the musical work.“Starfest” is a parody of campy sci-fi such as the Flash Gordon serials. The major roles are all portrayed by Afro-Americans and the music is a blend of R&B, rock, gospel and traditional musical theatre. You Know I Can't Eat Buffalo Meat When There's A Terrorist on the Loose
by Mario Farwell
BLUB:
Lowell Lovelace is a middle-aged black male with his own business. Lowell also has a brilliant idea to cash in on his one-eighth American Indian heritage (and get a cut of Creek Indian casino money) by transforming himself and his home into what he thinks is traditional American Indian style. Unfortunately, he does this the day his family meets their daughter's fiancé's parents, the upper-crust Barondorffs. Things are rocky but manageable for Lowell's long-suffering wife Maggie as she deals with the snooty Barondorffs, their rapper son LAX, neighbor Darrel, who insists on displaying his Scottish heritage with the shrill of bag pipes, and his pre-altzheimic mother-in-law Noona, a former girl street-gang leader. Things get dicey when Lowell mistakes Rajeem Nasir, a Pakistani terrorist, for the Creek tribe representative. They are all taken hostage by Rajeem, who reveals his intention of blowing up one of the revered American and St. Louis landmarks. Will they escape? Will the young couple get married? Will St. Louis still have its landmark? Will the Buffalo meat burn? Find out in this hilarious farce.

UMSL play leaps to big screen Issue date: 3/16/09 Section: Arts and Entertainment
A winner of last year's first annual University of Missouri-St. Louis play competition has been turned into a movie, thanks to university faculty and staff.
"Pennies for the Boatman," the film version of "The Seamstress of Saint Francis Street," was screened for an enthusiastic audience at the Missouri History Museum's Lee Theater last Tuesday. The special preview of the film, still a work in progress, was warmly received by the full-house audience.
"The Seamstress of Saint Francis Street" by Mario Farwell was the first-prize winner in the full-length play category of the first annual E. Desmond Lee Playwriting Competition sponsored by the E. Desmond Lee Professorship in African & African American Theatre & Media Studies at UM-St. Louis' Center for International Studies.
The competition was for plays that described the African American experience in St. Louis. The winning plays, including this one, were staged last year at the same venue.
UM-St. Louis' E. Desmond Lee Professorship in African and African American Studies, the Center for International Studies and the Department of Theatre, Dance and Media Studies in the College of Fine Arts and Communication sponsored the free screening of this new film version.
The play was so well-received that Niyi Coker, Jr., E. Desmond Lee Professor in African and African American Studies at UM-St. Louis, decide to create a film version as well.
The screenplay was written by Niyi Coker, who also directed it. Photography and editing was by James Abernathy, UM-St. Louis' Video Technology Production Coordinator. Executive producers are John Hylton, Marcel Bertoldt and E. Desmond Lee and producers are Niyi Coker, Jr., James Abernathy and Michael Murray.
Some of the cast of the original stage production appear in the film as well. Jackie Thompson, who played Camilla in the stage version, now plays the other sister Helen in the film.
The play features a couple of UM-St. Louis students as actors as well, such as Matthew Amend, who played Sebastian.
The story is set in the summer of 1958 in the city of St. Louis. The story focuses on two very different African American sisters, Helen and Camilla.
Quiet, sweet Helen (Jackie Thompson) has stayed in their home town of St. Louis, running her own business as a seamstress and building a life with her husband George (Duane Martin Foster) and son Jesse (Daniel B. McRath). When wild, rambling younger sister Camilla (Andrea Purnell) blows in unexpectedly from New York, Helen is delighted to see her but knows that she likely to stir things up, as the fun-loving but unpredictable Camilla usually does.
Beautiful, fashion-conscience Camilla is bold, outspoken and very flirtatious, She moves right in on Helen's life. However, Camilla is outraged to find that her sister has taken in their now-elderly Uncle Raymond (Dennis Lebby), whom she despises.
Mathew Amend as former boyfriend Sebastian, Michelle Dodson as difficult, snobby customer Ms. Summer and Marl S. Moloney as department store buyer Mr. Engelmeyer round out the principle cast.

Move over 'Spinal Tap.' Three young moms get their humble start at the
PTA talent show, then go on to "clean up" as the most
celebrated, yet unlikely girl group in history with their 'domestic'
brand of rock 'n roll. It's the world premiere of
"It's the Housewives!" a comic rock musical with side
splitting songs at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks.
The 19 hilarious songs at the heart of the show - with titles like
"In Sink And At Your Disposal," "Ironing Bored,"
"I've Been Defrosting All Day" and the "Reynolds Rap"
- are the brainchild of two-time Grammy award-winning guitaristLaurence Juber (former lead guitarist for Paul McCartney's
Wings) and his Emmy-nominated wife, television writer Hope
Juber. Soon after they were married, Hope wanted to combine her
comedy writing with Laurence's rock and roll music. She became
inspired while caring for the first of their two babies, and the songs
they created about vacuum cleaners ("It Sucks"), dirty diapers
("Be My Babysitter") and daily household duties ("Pledge
or Behold") went on to cook up a storm on Entertainment Tonight,
Hard Copy, John and Leeza, The Home Show and
Oprah.
"If you can keep from laughing too hard at the lyrics and actually
take a listen to the songs themselves, these are some well constructed
tunes," wrote Music Connection Magazine. All Music
Guide crowed: "Comical lyrics sure to tickle the funny bones of
both male and female fans alike hilarious!"
Performances of "It's the Housewives!" are scheduled
Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm, September 6
through October 12.
The Whitefire Theatre is located at 13500 Ventura Blvd.in Sherman Oaks (three blocks east of Woodman, at

St. Louis Writers' Group Workshop present a reading of a new musical "Make Me a Cowboy" by Don Bailey and Shannon Bryant
BLURB: "Make Me A Cowboy" is set at a dude ranch known as "The Jumpin' J." It is the late 1880's, after the railroads have been completed and are in full function. The railroads play havoc on the ranch's economy as the cattle are now being transported by locomotives, rather than by cowboys on cattle drives. Cowboys are out of work and the ranch is in danger of closing its doors. The ranch owner and his wealthy, very city-oriented brother (both hailing from St Louis) devise a plan to make money, in attempt to keep the ranch afloat. Their idea is to bring city-slickers from the East to their ranch and have them experience the life of a cowboy.
TIME: Monday, August 18 at 6:30pm
PLACE: Big Daddy's, 1000 Sidney, St. Louis, MO. Big Daddy's is located at the corner of 10th Street and Sidney in Soulard. You can find a map of the location on our website.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WALT DISNEY PICTURES AND PIXAR ANIMATION STUDIOS PRESENT THE COSMIC COMEDY WALLE
FEATURING ORIGINAL SCORE BY ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATED COMPOSER THOMAS NEWMAN
WITH AN ORIGINAL SONG WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY PETER GABRIEL
**ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK TO BE RELEASED ON JUNE 24TH ON WALT DISNEY RECORDS**
(June 2008 -- Burbank, CA)- Walt Disney Records will release the original soundtrack for Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation Studios WALLE on June 24, 2008. The recording features score written by 8 time Academy Award-nominated composer Thomas Newman (Finding Nemo, American Beauty) and the original song Down to Earth written and performed by Peter Gabriel (with music by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman). The soundtrack also includes two songs from Hello Dolly performed by Michael Crawford (It Only Takes A Moment and Put On Your Sunday Clothes) and Louis Armstrongs La Vie En Rose.
Academy Award-winning writer-director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, A Bugs Life) didnt wait long to ask Finding Nemo collaborator Thomas Newman to compose the music for WALLE. Stanton described, The night of the Oscars in 2004 for Nemo, we went out for a celebratory toast at the bar in the middle of the ceremony, and right there I remember saying, Okay, Ive got this idea, and it involves Hello Dolly and science fiction. Wondering if he would still talk to me after that
The Hello Dolly reference didnt scare off Newman his uncle Lionel was the conductor for the 1969 film. Thomas Newman is member of the film-scoring Newman dynasty (his father and uncle are the legendary composer and conductor Alfred and Lionel Newman respectively, his brother is composer David Newman and cousin is composer/singer/songwriter/recording artist Randy Newman).
After studying at Yale University, Thomas Newman joined the family business and began scoring for film in 1984. It was ten years later that he would became a double Academy Award-nominee with Little Women and The Shawshank Redemption. He has since received 8 nominations for the films American Beauty, Road To Perdition, Finding Nemo, Lemony Snickets A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Good German. He also composed the theme music for the television shows Boston Public and Six Feet Under and the miniseries Angels in America.
Though he has written music for a wide range of films Thomas Newman has never composed for a science fiction film. He brought his own unique style to WALLE. Stanton describes, Hes got a very unique style that often involves a lot of overdubs and mixing after hes recorded the orchestra. And it just allows this fresh palette of sounds to come in.
Hes really nailed an identity for not only the movie but for the characters and for the moments, Stanton continues, and I cant imagine it any other way.
Legendary artist Peter Gabriel had first contacted Andrew Stanton through a mutual friend, Gabriels bass player Tony Levin. Gabriel emailed Stanton seeking advice on a different animated feature. The email exchanged ended with Gabriel adding a post script offering If you ever need a song in one of your movies, just let me know. Stanton called in the marker, and Gabriel to collaborate with Newman on the song Down To You, which Peter performs. In addition, Gabriel co-composed two additional score cues with Newman.
What if mankind had to leave Earth, and somebody forgot to turn the last robot off?
After hundreds of lonely years of doing what he was built for, WALLE (short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) discovers a new purpose in life (besides collecting knick-knacks) when he meets a sleek search robot named EVE. EVE comes to realize that WALLE has inadvertently stumbled upon the key to the planets future, and races back to space to report her findings to the humans (who have been eagerly awaiting word that it is safe to return home). Meanwhile, WALLE chases EVE across the galaxy and sets into motion one of the most exciting and imaginative comedy adventures ever brought to the big screen.
Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios present WALLE in theaters on June 27, 2008. The WALLE Original Soundtrack will be in stores on June 24, 2008.

I'm looking for a composer to write music for my play with music entitled "Apollo's Way." The play is the story of two parallel worlds driven by greed, deceit and a quest for power. The play takes place in the ruins of The Apollo Theatre and makes use of song, juggling and multi-media elements. I'm looking for a composer to write the music for four songs and some incidental music in the play. The musical style range from rap, R&B, rock and musical theatre. The play has never been fully performed, but it has had several successful readings. One of the local universities has voice interest in seeing the project once it's completed. I also have another full-length musical entitled "Starfest" that I need a composer to work on. This musical comedy is a sci-fi romp along the lines of the old Flash Gordon shorts with an all black cast. You can read about the two projects on my website www.mariofarwell.com. Contact me at FARWEMAR@... if you're interested in working on either of these projects.
