Hello,

I am originally from Russia. I major in English and
American Studies and I'm getting a BA at my
university. On my websites I wrote about how it would
be best to acquire American English for a Russian
learner. The general impression I have so far
experienced is that in Russia American English is
mostly viewed with somewhat hostile attitude. This
probably refers to Soviet times when most Russians
developed their hatred toward America. Unfortunately
nowadays it doesn't seem to decrease much and very
often it bothers a lot those whose life is more or
less connected with the States.

This may have been the reason for the fact that
British English is taught in all Russian public
schools. All the teachers in schools or universities
seem to completely ignore American English; whenever
it is mentioned, they treat it like a minor dialect,
"Those Americans are all illiterate, they don't know
how to speak." This is what I hear at my classes of
English phonetics. Decent people who by no means
resemble savages, have savage views and corrupt the
students' minds. Moreover, they rarely have good
British pronunciation. Our dean who is a phonetician
says deeference for difference, bahs for bus, slope
for slop, orga-NIZE and assimi-LATE for OR-ganize and
as-SIM-ilate. Another point is that spoken English is
considered nearly Nonstandard, so when the students
compose dialogs they use a lot of cliches and old-use
Shakespearian constructions. Teachers are afraid to
accept even "modern changes" (mid 20th century) not to
break the Russian academic system. Some complain with
annoyance that "nowadays all rules are neglected due
to American influence." Some teachers even believe
that "were" and "where" are homophones, and the verb
"think" is never used in the Present/Past/Future
Continuous Tense, but this happens rarely and usually
in high schools where some teachers have never heard
anybody speak English.

Standard is what the majority says -- this is what Ann
Cook said. In Russia standard is what is written in
dictionaries and books, regardless of what people say.
In the Russian language it appears in the highest
degree -- often people use the only variant which is
marked Nonstandard in the dictionary, like the word
"yogurt" which is marked as stressed on the second
syllable in all dictionaries while all Russians say it
with the first syllable stressed, like in English. In
this case academicians have a chance to let anybody
down if they wish so, and the opposite party has no
proof.

That is what I would like to know -- how can I prove
the right point of view? If I say "I had hardly come
when..." I get a lower grade but if I say, as
required, "Hardly had I arrived when..." I sound funny
to myself. If the teacher is making fun of American
pronunciation to prove how funny it sounds and prevent
the students from taking it up (it happens almost
every day in my university), or gives rude remarks
referring to my American pronunciation, how should I
react? Sometimes when I am aware that any argument is
senseless, I just answer, "You know, I'm illiterate,
like all Americans, that's why I don't know how to
speak right but do it like all other people do."

Is there any way to make things better?

Regards

Nick

I just talked to a therapist, and she told me to slow down my
speech. I believe that her teaching is directly contrary to Ann's
teaching, and would appreciate any insight on this issue.

More specifically, my therapist said that I am not pronouncing
certain sounds, such as "th" and "r" fully, so that I create the
impression of speaking very rapidlly. Is this a plausible
diagnosis?

Why we study the American Accent ?

The meaning of studying the AA is :

* When you face American people , and you want to explain your talking

in a language that they always use .

* The A.A is a language that you can discuss and explain everything that you

need to talk about .

* A lot of people found the A.A a lovely thing to do , and they're usually

like to speak in it .

* If you're new student to the United States , and you have another language .

* If you're a business man and you've a lot of companies in the United States

and you often go there to continue your job , and you've another language .

* The Internet : in the internet you'll face a lot of things that you have to

accept , understand , know and do by the A.A .

Hey babies...

Now that we're training English language, don't you think it's better to use correct form of it in any case? I mean try to use correct form, not to use internet abbriviations like these:

Use: mean ... not min

Use: for ... not 4

Use: you ... not u

Use: we ... not v

Use: thanks ... not thankx or tnx

etc...

Don't you think so?

I'm a native speaker, and I don't use such abbreviations, even in my most casual of emails and instant messages. People who use such abbreviations, I think, are generally viewed as lazy and/or uneducated.

I agree, but....

if colour can become color, we can become v and you can become u. If OK is an English word, why not BTW, cya l8r??? you never know (or shall i say, u never no :)).

This is a new english, we/v call it netinglish. A new language in making or English evolving???....I don't know.

On a serious note, spoken english is quite different from written english..and these might be just some legitimate (!!!!) attempts to bridge the gap. Any ideas!!!

By the way(BTW)...I am a foreign learner of English and am quite lazy too :)

Hey babay...

As you know, we are ghatered to learn real English language with it's real accent. I think if somebody like to learn some abbriviation like "l8r, u, 4, BTW, c..." he/she can do it in so many chat rooms all over the Internet. We'll use OK, A.D., AM, PM, and somethings like those, because all native people use them.

That's all

All said and done, these abbreviations which we come across on the net are quite useful while we chat or communicate with friends on the net, but when we speak about communicating with customers or clients in writing all these foresaid abbreviations MUST be chucjked out of the window. Professional english is very important during such communication because it also send a message to the person that we care enough to sole their problem and address them with respect. I am a trainer at a call center and I train the agents in appropriate use of email and chat alongwith american accent, both listening and speaking.

HI Guys

I joined this group only to learn the American Accent.
I am one of those bunch of guys who can write / speak
good english but unable to understand what an American
speaks ( In person as well as over phone ). Some times
I had to ask Americans to repeat what they had said
and in the process I am feeling afraid that people
might think that I am not paying attention.

Please help me to improve my understanding capability
of american accent.

Probably if I am succesfull in understanding American
accent then I would automatically become fluent in
American accent.

Thanks
Gopinath

P.S: I am working as a software professional with a
masters in engineering.

I and my friends had this same problem some time back when we first arrived in
the US. But now my ears have become tuned with this american accent. Fortunately
people (at least where i live) are aware of the (in)ability of non-native
english speakers to understand them.

Understandably time may not always be available for everyone to get in tune with
the new accent. Even if you understand this accent, that is no gurantee for you
to be able to mimic it.

You can check it at www.m-w.com (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
It's "keipble" but there is another pronunciation for rapid speech

It seems that everybody has that problem, and watching American movies doesn't seem to work for me. Can you give some advice to understand them? Particularly in rapid speech

People in chat rooms and in using e-mail sometimes use such short form
writing. For example, RUOK? means "are you okay." It is also done in
classified ads. For example, 4RmsRvVu means "Four Rooms with a River
View." Neither of these is an accepted abbreviation. It appears that
you are communicating with people who have their own e-mail shorthand
methods.

You may want to look at the Nationality Guides in the American Accent
Training book. There is one for Indian. My experience teaching people
from India is that you do not use intonation in you native language and
you have often learned British English which uses frequently uses
different sylable intonation from American English. That is a double
whammy for learning the American Accent. I suggest you really focus on
the intonation first. It will make a major difference.

National Public Radio has a web page at www.npr.org It is good because
they often will stream the audio of a speech or interview and provide
the text too. First listen to the audio several times. Then try
printing out the text and following it as you listen again to the
audio. Use a highlighter ot mark the intonation you hear on the
printout.

Good Luck,

Frank Herrmann.

Dear Jesus,

First of all, whenever you have a problem and can not solve it always refer to
God and ask his
help.

Secondly, listen to a tape or a video as we learn thru listening. Keep
rewinding the word that
have rl sound and then practice it. A child learn to speak only by listening.
If you listen a
word over and over again your brain would be trained to prounce it correctly.

I hope so.

Allah(God) Hafiz.

May I suggest breaking it down into its descrete parts.

First, make sure you are doing the initial vowel sound properly. For
the word "girl" that is a "G". Practice g, g, g,

The next sound is the semi-vowel "R" preceeded by a slight schwa.
Practice that sound too.

The last sound is the "L" which has a sligt schwa after it. Try ir
alone.

Now slowly sound out each sound. When they are correct, slowly increase
your speed. You will master it fairly quickly.

Frank.

Hello,

I have some points to inquire about. It seems that
there is some interference
between what I am taught in college and what is really
observed. I need advice
from teachers who are native speakers.

Below are the items which I originally wrote in my
works and how they were
corrected by my teacher.

1. Nurses are wanted to look after the injured.
Corrected: Nurses are NEEDED..

2. black warm leather gloves. Corrected: warm black
leather gloves.

3. He was anxious to be introduiced to the world of
theater. Corrected: the
world of THE theater. In the same text: He felt like
theater was in his blood. Corrected: THE theater.
Because they say theater is countable.

I need to know whether the corrections have any
grounds so that I could learn if
I was rigyht or wrong.

Regards

Nick
