Di- or De-? A Spelling Challenge

Is it Demented or Dimented?
Modern English so often pronounces unaccented syllables in such a way that virtually all vowels can sound alike. They all can take on the unaccented "schwa" or "uh" sound.
This can create a spelling problem with certain words and groups of words. Accept/Except is a notorious example. This problem arises with words beginning with the prefixes de- and di-. There is a difference. If you know what the prefixes mean, you can keep track of the difference.
So What Does Defenestrate Mean?
DE-. The prefix de- usually means "out of" or "away from." So the roots of the word deplete literally mean "out of full" or "away from full." That is a little awkward but we understand that it means something close to "empty." Defenestrate means literally "to go or cause to go out of a window." In Latin and many Romance languages today, the word de still has this meaning.
Di-, Dis-, and Dia-
DI-. The prefix di- usually means "two." This is fairly common in chemistry. For example, the compound carbon dioxide means "carbon with two oxygen atoms."
Occasionally di- can be short for the prefix dis-. This normally only happens before the letter v. The prefix dis- means "apart" or "asunder." It actually comes from a Latin form meaning "two," so it is related to the other meaning of di-. We see this in such words as divide (literally, "to see apart") or diverge (literally "to branch apart"). This really is not much different from the current meaning of these words as we can think of these as "to see in two parts" or "to branch in two."
There is also the prefix dia- which has a different meaning, but still, curiously enough, often applies to two things. Dia- means "across" or "through." It also actually has its ultimate root in a word meaning "two." So diameter literally means "a measurement through (or across)," and dialogue means "words across," i.e., spoken with someone else.
What Does This Mean to Me?
So how does this help with spelling? In most cases if you know what these roots mean, you can tell how to spell the word. So is it dimented or demented? Well, the root -ment- means "mind" as in the word "mental." Demented still means "out of one's mind."
For what it is worth, English has several words for "two minds," depending on the sense intended. If a person take different opposing positions, they are doubleminded. If they say one thing but mean something else, they are hypocritical. If it is mental disorder with multiple personalities, there are several different terms, probably the most common being schizophrenic or split personality.

Shall

I  had learned that shall is just used with I and We, but when I watched the movie Gladiator (by Ridley Scott) I heard shall used with all pronouns including he, she, and they. Is this common in spoken English?
Shall can be used with any pronoun. It is most commonly used with I and we because it does suggest a strong intent, and we know our own intentions the best. There is nothing wrong with using it with other pronouns, however.
In America, shall is commonly used in legal documents to emphasize a future action that someone must take: "In the event that the product fails within two years, the manufacturer shall replace the product." This is a future action which the person must perform. It is a kind of future imperative, though most would not use that term.
The Exception
Having said all that, some authorities--especially in England--do teach the following "rule" about the difference between shall and will.
Simple future is I shall and we shall while the rest of the pronouns or corresponding nouns take will--you will, he will, and they will.
Imperative future uses the opposite word, so for an action someone must take, use I will and we will while the rest of the pronouns use the opposite--you shall, she shall, and they shall.
This is not common in everyday use at all, especially in America, but be aware that some English speakers are taught this and may understand the words this way. If you are writing or speaking to such an audience, you may want to keep this in mind.

Hi guys,

I'm just wondering about the pronunciation of words like 'entertainment' 'center' 'international' I mostly hear these words pronounced by dropping the middle 't' so it would sound like enertainment, cener, and inernational. But there are also others who would pronounced these words without dropping the middle 't' could anyone know where the pronunciation originated and how come others won't drop the middle 't' although I'm not saying it's wrong, just wanna know so that if someone would ask the difference atleast I would know the answer. Thanks in advance guys.

Hi Sandel,

It's just sloppy pronunciation on the part of some Americans!  When I teach,  I make sure that students become familiar not only with the correct pronunciation also with common mispronunciations that they will undoubtedly hear.

For example, many (most?) Americans do not pronounce restaurant as 'res-taur-ant.'  We make it into two syllables and say, simply, rest'rant (pronounced 'rest-ront').  I recently had a Brazilian student here in the States who was working security at one of the local Casinos.  When I explained this pronunciation to him, his face lit up and he exclaimed, 'NOW I understand!'  It seems that when people would ask him directions to the 'rest'rant', he would send them to the rest rooms!!  We both had a good laugh over this.

Alexandra

Hi everyone,

The word "restaurant" reminded me about the incident happened way back

in 1981 when I was on the way(from Asia) to Canada to pursue my tertiary

education.

When I was in San Francisco aiport to catch my connecting flight, I asked someone

where the "Res-tall-rant"(pronounced as three syllables).  He/She would look "blank".

This happened many times until finally, I have to use the sign-language by showing that

I am looking for something to eat.... Till today, when I shared this story with my friends,

they would still have a good laugh about it.....

Rgs,

Daniel

Sandel,

To my knowledge, the middle t is dropped by people in most parts of the US. however, I have heard people from the 1)  mid-west, 2)  those who form the educated lot from the Ivy league institutions and 3)  some people  from the States that border the Pacific, who tend to pronounce the middle "t." The best answer for the more curious delegate is it depends on the individuals exposure to foreign accents. The greater the exposure, the more likely, they are to pronounce the middle t.

Just my penny's worth

A statue in a park with a soldier on a horse with it’s 2 feet in the air means
the soldier died in combat.
If the horse has only 1 foot in the air,
the soldier died of injuries from combat.
If the horse has all 4 feet on the ground, the soldier died of natural causes.

When the English settlers landed in Australia, they noticed a strange animal that jumped extremely high and far.  They asked the aboriginal people using body language and signs trying to ask them about this animal.  They responded with  ’’Kan Ghu Ru’’  the English then adopted the word kangaroo.  What the aboriginal people were really trying to say was
‘’we don’t understand you’’,   ‘’ Kan Ghu Ru’’.

در حقيقت منظور بوميان اين بوده که "ما منظور شما را نمي فهميم".
