PR07/11/2009 Digging up Balluta square not in the public interest
Referring to the proposal by Saint Julian’s Local Council to dig up Balluta
Square in order to build a car park AD spokesperson on Sustainable Development
and Local Government Carmel Cacopardo said: "AD asks for all plans to be
published and adequate public consultation before a decision as to whether the
project is to be given the go ahead and not when the decision in favour of the
project is a fait accompli. AD agrees with residents that Balluta Square is
unique and must be preserved. Residents, their guests and visitors should be
able to continue enjoying one of the few open spaces in the area. A car park
will attract even more traffic to an already traffic clogged area which is
already served by a private car park."
"The actual square should remain substantially as it is at present and enhanced
further by planting more oak trees to replace those which died or went
missing.”
