In May 1944, as southern Albania gained its freedom, the National Liberation Movement gathered an assembly in Permet. At this meeting, the movement took on a new name as the National Liberation Front, and Enver Hoxha received a new title as the Supreme Commander of the Albanian National Liberation Army (A hardline Stalinist, Hoxha subsequently ruled Albania until his death in 1985). The assembly (or Congress) officially dethroned King Zog as well, and all agreements entered by the Albanian government before the war were annulled. In retrospect, the "Albanian National Liberation Army" probably modeled itself after the "Committee for the Liberation of Albania" formed back in 1905, which had then conducted active guerrilla campaigns, using various other names and methods, against the foreign armies of occupation such as the Ottomans, the Serbs (in the north), and the Greeks (in the south) who held ethnically compact lands that belonged to Albania. The Committee, in turn, no doubt itself was inspired by or a byproduct of the "League of Prizren" of 1878, an Albanian Alliance of diverse faiths and groups, which had convened in Prishtina, Kosova (a.k.a. Kosovo), at that memorable site of that ancient Illyrian nation of Dardania, to administer the wellbeing of Albanians in the larger Balkans. It is most interesting, isn't it? How history continuously affords legitimate new means of survival for a nation that is intent upon reclaiming and recovering its ownmost historic destiny, even against all odds! This story, with its annals of human cruelty against Albanians, begs to be told for the benefit of all humanity.
