Hello,
my name is Helena and I am kind of new in Alaska. I like outdoors and I would
like to
join to your group. I checked your calendar and there is a hike to Near point on
Friday
is the meeting place Fred Meyer on Abott road at 6 p.m.?
I would be also intresting in any other kind of activities, I am free this and
the next
week and I would be happy to find somebody to go kayaking with me. I got my own
kayak and vehicle just dont have anybody to go with.
Helena

Due to the car breakins at this trailhead...either drive a car with
next to nothing in it to trailhead, or maybe we should carpool from
say Abbott Road - Fred Meyers lot circa 6PM ish ??? Draw straws on
which car to take ! To my knowledge these little thieves have not
yet been apprehended....anyone heard differently ?

Dear Alaska_Outdoors memebers,
I'll be out of town on Fridays 8/20 and 8/27.
This will be your great opportunity to host the outings and own our
group.
Please let me know who can be there and take in charge.
The outing schedule is posted as
8/20: Prospect Heights Trail head: destination Near Point
8/27: Glen Alps Trail head: destination Flattop
And the schedule will be on the papers.
However, the group will decide where they want to go.
Thanks
Sure enjoyed the hike last Friday night. This Monday I have a
birthday party at 6:30pm so won't be able to come and then the 13th a
wedding to go to in Chikaloon, bummer. See you the 16th for sure.
Enjoy...Lyn
The bike-n-hike is a go for tomorrow (8/7). So far, four people are
going with a possible 5th.
If there's anybody else interested in this trip, we will be meeting
tomorrow morning (9:00am) at the Northway Mall Carr's parking lot.
happy weekend!

I'm looking for anyone interested in doing a hike up a nice peak/area
this Sat., and welcome anyone interested in joining me. Tikisla,
Crow, Craigie (Hatcher pass), Ptarmagin, S .Suicide...I'm open for
ideas. Elevation gain rewarded with extraordinary views in Alpine
settings...is my goal for the day. If the weather looks this good
tommorrow...Pioneer or Matanuska peaks, are possible.
Sunday > 2 PM is another window of opportunity for adventure.

Learning Curves are so much fun!! Looks like we're all having a
good time figuring out this usergroup business…..
So here's an update on this coming Saturday's (8/07)
bike-n-hike. At this point, this is still a suggested trip. I am
waiting to see how many are interested before firming up the
logistics. I would like to see between 4 and 10 people commit
before establishing a time and carpool spot. Since the parking
situation for this trip is even more limited than the Rabbit Lake
Hike last week, carpooling is pretty much mandatory. I am thinking
that an earlier start would be appropriate…. maybe leave
Anchorage
about 9 or so.
Below is a brief description of the Peter's Creek area which is
located about 21 miles north of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway. If
you have a map of the Chugach State park, you can find the trail
there but, you will find very little written about it in the local
trail guidebooks.
Description as follows
"Access: Glenn Highway to mile 21 and Peters Creek Exit. Travel
means: Foot. Bicycles allowed first 5 miles, snowmobile when
conditions allow. Distance: 5 miles one way to end of abandoned
roadbed. Unmarked, unmaintained trail continues up valley 11 miles
to treeling and open tundra. Difficulty: Moderate. Old roadbed
has steep, muddy sections and unbridged stream crossings. Unmarked
trail beyond can be lost easily. Special Attractions: Quiet area
with nice views of wooded valley. Winter: Excellent skiing,"
I've got an electronic picture of the trail map, but alas no way to
attach it with this note(that, or I just haven't learned how to do
such a thing....more learning curve stuff)
If you are interested in doing this trip please let me know and also
whether you can transport bikes and how many.
cheers

Currently, default e-mail system is set to reply only to the sender,
not entire groups. So, if you want to post your reply to the
message to entire group, you need to use "reply to all"/"reply to
everyone" in your e-mail system, instead of simple "reply."
Advantage to this is
You do not clog your e-mail system. You may not be interested in
knowing who are responding to other members' message.
Disadvantage is
If you are interested in who else is interested in going to a
particular hiking. Then, you may want to read all the replies to
the message.
I can change the degault to "reply to all member" if that's are more
preferred. Then, only way to reply to the sender is to create a new
message and copy & paste the sender's e-mail address...
Please let me know your thoughts about this.
Thanks.
I can'quite figure this system out. I replied to this message and it
was not posted. I am trying this way now. Dan and I are interested
in the Peter's creek outing this Saturday. Christine
Fellow Funhogs…
For your consideration:
A combination bike/hike trip this coming Saturday on the Peter's
Creek Trail.
Bike the first five miles which are on a gravel road. Lock up the
bikes just before fourmile creek and continue on foot. The official
trail (after crossing the fourmile…,that means getting wet as
there is no bridge) continues for another 6 miles (it may continue
further as an undeveloped trail but don't know for sure).
The other option would be to explore some undeveloped trails heading
towards the headwaters of the four mile. Group input and trail
conditions will determine which way we'll go.
It's been a few years since I've done this trail but as I
recall it's pretty mellow. The goal of this trip is to "seize
the day" and explore rather than make miles or any particular
destination point.
Any takers??

If your view of this website is the same as mine, the calendar can be
accessed by clicking on the link directly to the left of your name,
along the LHS of the window.
Have a good time on Saturday, folks -- I've got visitors so won't
make the hike.

Something to do while we catch up on much-needed rain.
Hi Toshi,
I used to pack in the Denali backcountry quite often when I lived in
Fairbanks years ago.
My favorite area is back behind Cathedral Mountain. I liked
traveling up towards the head waters of the Teklanika River. Always
saw bears, wolves and sheep in the area.
Cathedral mountain is in the Igloo Mountain area, about 40 miles into
the park.
Have fun!

This winter, I volunteered with them, and they are wonderful
people. Besides, Arctic Valley is a wonderful place to hike. I am
thinking of taking people to Arctic Valley for Friday outing event.
Work Party this Weekend!
We will be having a work party this Sunday (7/25) starting at ~10
am. There
are quite a few small projecst we hope to do, and will tackle them
based on how
many people show up and what skills/interests they have. These
include a bit
of concrete work in one of the lodge entryways, some trim work in
the lodge and
maybe some painting, changing out some light bulbs in the tall
ceilings,
cleaning some windows, and cleaning out the back rooms. We also
need to do a
big project to clean out all the oils and other lubricants in the T-
Bar that we
don't actually use on our lifts anymore. If the weather outside
isn't so
frightful, we can do a bit of outside work as well, including
painting some
lodge trim, staining the sun deck a bit, and maybe hauling off some
garbage/junk to the dump.
If anyone is interested in a hike, there is still some snow fence at
the top of
the T-Bar that needs to come down, and the upper T-Bar shack needs a
second
coat of red trim paint.
We are also looking for someone willing to go through our "massive"
ski boot
collection and match up separated pairs. We hope to try and sell
them at one
of the swap meets this fall, so that we can clear out space in our
old rental
shack for storage.
If none of these projects interest you, come on up anyway. We will
find
something to entertain you!
We were going to try and run the chairlift so we could stain the
ramp at the
top, but although the weather forecast looks like it will be dry on
Sunday, it
doesn't look very hopeful for the wood to have dried out by then
(ie: expect
rain on Saturday). But if you are interested in a "free" ride up
the
chairlift, please let me know and I will let you know when we decide
to run up
and do it. That way I'll know how many brushes and rollers to
bring! It will
either be a weekend day, or maybe even after work one of these days.
So come on up for a bit of fun community involvement this Sunday,
and I hope to
see you up there! Bring the family and do some hiking! If you want
to BBQ
something, the grill will be available. I know we have lighter
fluid, but you
will probably have to bring your own charcoal - and matches would
help too.
Lodge rental season will start to slow down soon, and we can start
having a few
more work parties on weekends again. So if you can't make it this
Sunday,
there are still some opportunities to come!

please let me know. I am planning to go in August and looking for a

I really don't know anyone in this group and it appears that many of you know
each other personally. I joined primarily because I visited Alaska last year
for the last week of August and simply put I fell in love with the Kenai
Peninsula. I drove all around the peninsula and gave my camera quite a workout.
Ever since leaving AK last September 2, I just can't get the majesty of this
wonderful place out of my minds eye. I find that I sit in my office here in
Maryland sometimes DAYDREAMING about the place I visited and perusing the
pictures that I took online. I created a mini online photo-gallery of some of
the pictures that I snapped if you care to see them.
http://garcianet.net/alaska/
When I visited I was with a group of men whom I worked with. aWe were fishing on
the Kenai and Russian rivers. Ever since my visit I have told my wife we HAVE to
go back and do this together. I loved Seward, and Nikilski.. Homer was really
cool too. I was interested in the ART community when I was there...
Anyhow this is my intro... Take care
Gary
thanks for creating this board. I hiked the skokum (sp) hike at
Nebesna with friends this weekend. It is an awesome hike with really
unusual geology. It says it is only 5 miles but none of us believe
it. It took us over five hours to complete it! It was moderately
strenuous and not for weak ankle or knees. Even though is it a long
drive, I recommend this hike! Make it a camp out.
Hi there,
I set up the site, so that everyone can easily communicate and invite
each others. All members can invite and post on calendar, so please
post your outing schedule if you don't mind others joining in.
Please spread the word and invite people to this group.
Correction: In the news paper, I miss print the date as 7/24 instead
of 7/23: Friday.
Thanks to both of you for setting up this group and spreading the
word. I just saw the blurb in the ADN, and got Nancy's email when I
logged on to sign up for the group. See you tomorrow night unless
it's raining hard.
Cassie
Thanks so much for setting this up! Today I hiked Little O'Malley
with a couple old Grapeviners & we were lamented how a message board
was needed to carry on...! I appreciate you doing this & will spread
the word.
