An email friend of mine from Pa., sent this picture of one of their elk. He has taken quite a number of pictures of them and sent me. I thought maybe some of you would like to look at a Pennsylvania elk. They do have a season on them there. This picture was made at Sinnamahonning in Cameron county Pennsylvania. You'll notice it standing right next to the river at a bridge close to Pa. road 120. Now we know where to hunt if we went.
I heard on the radio this morning that the largest meteor shower for the last 100 years is suppose to be Sunday morning at 4:00am. If you sitting in a tree - it'll give you something to do until daybreak.

Harold,
The first deer I ever harvested was at Oakmulgee with a bow. A friend of
mine's family owned a small cabin and @ 40 acres around the Payne Lake area.
We would go down 3 or 4 days before the gun hunts and bow hunt/scout for the
gun hunting. I always loved that area!
If you go to this link within my homepage, it has a picture of that old
cabin and the deer. Those were the good-ole days!

I have been hearing about the upcoming doe season and knew it was a long one. I had even read in the paper that the state wanted at least 600,000 does killed this year to get the deer herd back in proportions. I looked at the seasons last night and noticed that the county I hunt in(St. Clair) has a 32 day doe season. It starts on the 1st day of gun season and runs to Dec 7th and then starts again Dec 22nd and finishes up Jan 1st.
This should be a hunting year to talk about for many years to come.
Next Saturday is opening of the gun season. I have a couple of places picked out to hunt. Maybe with some luck I can get a deer. How's everybody else prepared for opening day?

I noticed that Beaver Mountain hunting club is looking for two members. I don't know exactly where it's at, but it might be close to the one I'm in. The one I'm in is off highway 26 between Ashville and Ragland. I cross Beaver mountain to get there.
They have 480 acres, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys & trophy deer, dues $375 a year. If interested, call Victor Frink at 205-594-3232 or 205-594-5757.
If any of you other folks know of any hunting clubs in Alabama that is looking for members, post them on here.
This 30-06 Ruger is a really good shooter. I couldn't believe how
good it did after I had the accuracy work done to it. I had thought
about also having it glass bedded when I had the trigger set and the
barrel floated, but the gunsmith wanted me to try it before doing
any more work to it and see. He said it would do good enough with
what was done and it did. I have two 30-06's and my shoulder is in
poor shape, so I thought that I would trade one for a lighter
caliber to hunt with. My other 30-06 has a longer barrel and is a
little heavier, so it doesn't kick quite as bad. The 7mm/08 or 257
Roberts would be better on my shoulder and still shoot fair enough
for me.
I would imagine that your 7mm Ruger must have been light due to the
composite stock. Wasn't that stock lighter than a wooden one? That
could have been why it kicked.

I owned a Ruger M-77 in 7mm Rem Mag - It was the Stainless/Composite model - kicked like a mule!!! It was hard pressed to shoot a 2in group at 100 yards off the sand bags but was a deer machine - I harvested probably 30-40 deer with it and only missed one deer in that time - a gimme shot at that - i shot several at 200+ yards - on the bench it was below par ... in the field it was always on the mark.

I have a accurized bolt action M-77 Ruger 30-06 that has only been shot less than 20 times. The trigger has been set by a gunsmith to 3 1/2 pounds of pull and the barrel has been floated by the same gunsmith. This rifle will shoot a 100 yard group at 3/4 inch or under depending on the shooter. I would like to trade it for a 7mm/08 bolt action rifle as I need a caliber that doesn't have as much kick as the 30-06 due to my shoulder condition. I would also consider a .257 Roberts caliber. If you have either of those calibers and want a really accurate rifle, let me know.

As I have a hunting website listed on the Internet, I get a lot of
email from different sources. This one was sent to me yesterday, so
I,m posting it here. If I had 1000 bucks, I would probably use it on
this trip.
===========================================================
If you hunt with black powder or a bow you should read this.
Bordering the New River for over two miles and divided almost evenly
between Mercer county West Virginia and Giles county Virginia are
over 2000 acres of private mountain wilderness known as "Bear
Mountain Wilderness Resort"
Bear Mountain was developed to cater to people who vacation with
their horses to trail ride and enjoy the wilderness. From March to
the end of September this is its business.
From this October to January Bear Mountain is going to offer a
select few hunters the opportunity of a life time. Hunt guided or
semi guided, your choice, from Sunday to Sunday staying in our 17000
sq ft log lodge in two room suites with private bath, all meals
provided. This is only for bow or black powder which is all we
allow, you can hunt both states if you like and you can fill your
limit in both states. The cost is 1000 dollars per hunter and there
will only be 30 hunts available.
There are only going to be five hunters a week allowed to hunt, that
's right , a tract of land 2 miles by three miles and only five
people hunting it while you are there, and only five staying at the
lodge. You can fit five people in the fire place of the lodge. To be
one of the 30 you are going to have to be quick in making your
reservation. Once we have five reservations for a week that's it,
you missed your opportunity for that week.
The thousand dollars covers your stay in one of the lodges suites,
three meals a day, the use of our walk in coolers, hunting stands
and your guide.
There is an additional charge if you wish to have your deer dressed
and processed for you. Mounting will also be available. Out of state
hunting licenses can be had by going to our site and following the
links.
Short of tying a deer to a stake and giving you six days to shoot at
him no, one can guarantee a successful hunt and if you got it that
way it wouldn't be worth having.
I am a hunter and before we decided to allow private hunts and to
restrict it to bow and black powder, I restricted my self to hunting
deer with a side arm.
Along this property are rich fertile river bottoms planted in corn
and clover, I personally have seen as many as fifty deer at night in
one of our fields along the river. If you can hunt you can fill
your limits.
If you are interest go to www.deer-turkey-hunting.com Then call
Mary Conely she will be more than happy to answer any question and
make your reservations. Remember there are only 30 hunts available,
to get in on this you may have to act on it right now.
At your own risk and under some guidelines you may bring your own
personal four wheeler if you wish, but its for hunting purposes
only.
For the ones that have joined this list "Alabamahunting", I wanted to take time to tell you how to send email. Just add a contact in your email directory and label it Alabamahunting@yahoogroups.com and then as the default email address to send to Alabamahunting@yahoogroups.com Then when you want to send an email to Alabamahunting, just select that in the To: field and it will be posted on the list for everyone that is subscribed to read.
I plan on forwarding a few messages that might be of interest to the members that I have got from other sources later.
Subject: [Backwoodsman] Parched Corn For The Trail
Parched corn has been a staple of Longhunters, mountaineers, and southwestern peoples for a long, long time. Call it pinole, chequeway, or parched corn, it is essentially the same. Toast/roast fine ground corn meal in a skillet or on a griddle till it changes color to a very light golden brown. You want to stir it while you are roasting every once in a while. Sack it up so the moths and weevils don't get to it before you do. You can take a spoonful and a sip of water, or mix it in cold water for a drink. Mix it in hot water a bit thicker for soup, or thicker yet for mush. I've mixed it with powdered chocolate, powdered milk, cinnammon and brown sugar or maple sugar. Any one or combination of these is good. You can sear some meat from a rabbit, grouse or squirrel, shred it up and add it to the "soup". Parched corn will keep a long time and is very filling, while being light and easy to pack. And if you pack it in a "poke" like I do, there's nothing to break. Ten lbs. of parched corn and an occasssional bit of small game or fish has taken a man a LONG ways. Any of the recipes for trail food are not going to have obesity as a byproduct. You will be ravenous for grease. This is one reason my biscuits loaded with cheese and Jimmy Dean sausage taste so good out in the woods. If you are on the trail for a long time, lack of fat can be a real problem. You get tired and shaky. Perhaps dried powdered butter and/or olive oil would be a satisfactory supplement for a long trek.
What I made was a simple bag, about 8.5(w)X 9.5(l) inches. It is slightly based on the commercial hunters bag from one of those links. I made it from modern canvas, and plan on using some dye on it tonight to attempt a medium brown color. My bag isn't for muzzleloading but instead was meant to be carried while modern hunting. I like to have a notebook, and pencils, noshes, etc. while I'm out. I guess some would call me a lazy hunter, most of the time I don't give a d@mn if I come back with meat or not, I'm more interested in getting out, sitting beneath a tree and watching what comes by. Although I like to do so safely and sensibly armed :) This bag is intended to replace my military style fanny back that I normally carry on a sling.
My bag is simply designed. Imagine a box 8.5 wide by about the same width. From bottom corner to bottom corner draw a half circle. Cut that circle off square with the box at 9.5inches. Get the idea? That is the basic pattern. (I cut it out of a piece of sheet paper). Lay that on your material. mark it out. Flip it over so you can two copies of this pattern joined at the top. Cut it out, and then fold it so that it overlaps. That is the back of your bag and the flap, all in one piece.
Then I used a 2 inch wide strip of canvas for a welt. Cut a piece longer than you think you need, and cut off the excess, or flip it over, sew it down so that it can be used for an attachment for it's sling.
Cut two more pieces a bit shorter (about an inch) that the original pattern. That makes the front piece of your pouch (one of them, and a pocket that you can place beneath the top flap. If I had it to do over again, I'd use some red or dark green cloth for the edges of the fabric, hide the fraying. Instead I sewed the bag while inside out and folded over all cloth edges, like most do to hide the seams, and used an overhand stitch. That should help to keep the fraying down. I also stitched the edges of both pockets and all exterior edges to keep that down as well
One of the things that I did pick up from that article is carrying only what you need. Something many of us need to practice. This bag is lighter than a comparable one of leather, is cheaper (bought a full yard of canvas, 72 inches wide for ~$5) and once I get it dyed and water proofed with candle waxed rubbed into the top flap and front, waterproof to a degree. I used artifical sinew to do the stitching, next time I think I'll use plain matching thread.
Ask me again December what I think of this bag, and what I'd change.
Alabama just put into effect on 8-1-2001 a reciprocal concealed carry permit system that recognizes the concealed carry permits from the states of, Florida, Mississippi, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota and Wyoming. If you have a concealed carry permit from any of those states, it will be recognized in Alabama and vice versa.
Hi,
I just started this Alabama hunting list for anyone that likes to
talk hunting. Feel free to post messages giving your tips on hunting
or helping someone to find a place to hunt. We'd like to hear of your
hunting experiences, where a good management area is and what part of
it is better than other parts. You might want to help someone decide
on which hunting equipment to use or buy or just help sight in a
scope or find a place to shoot.
Thanks!
James Roberts
