The best redrives (I think, only personal point of view) for VW are this:

Reduction drives are a must for VW engines IF you...
 
Fly a draggy slow airplane...
want more torque... 
Take off over 5,000 ft ASL.  (a turbo also helps:-)

Have had some luck welding aluminum.  Sometimes I can run a beautiful bead, then other times it looks like Fido's Butt.
